La sismicità indotta è uno dei principali spauracchi legati ad alcune attività nel sottosuolo, come certe attività minerarie ed estrattive, tra cui l’iniezione di acqua per estrarne idrocarburi (il cosiddetto fracking), ma anche come alcune attività che potrebbero avere un ruolo importante nella transizione energetica, come lo stoccaggio della CO2. Nella maggioranza dei casi, i sismi generati da queste attività sono del tutto impercettibili, ma le eccezioni non mancano. Terremoti superiori al 5° grado della scala Richter sono stati registrati in più occasioni ed è quindi necessario capire meglio il fenomeno che oggi è al centro di molte ricerche di sismologia. Ne parliamo con Francesco Grìgoli - ricercatore del Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra dell’Università di Pisa - all’indomani della pubblicazione su Nature Reviews di un articolo di sintesi, che fa il punto sulle più recenti ricerche in materia.

In this Causes or Cures episode, Dr. Eeks chats with Dr. Shuji Ogino about his recent paper published in Nature Reviews, Clinical Oncology, titled "Is early-onset cancer an emerging global epidemic? Current evidence and future implications." In the podcast, Dr. Ogino discusses what "early onset" means, what types of cancer are showing up earlier in younger people, and the evidence and data that supports this trend. He discusses how exposures early in life and in utero may be contributing to early-onset cancer in young people ( in their thirties and forties), and the specific risk factors that have been linked to early-onset cancer.  He talks about why molecular pathological epidemiology is important for future analysis of this trend and what we need to do to slow the epidemic from an individual perspective, a public health perspective, and a research one. Dr. Ogino, originally from Japan, is chief of the program in Molecular Pathological Epidemiology, Department of Pathology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Professor of Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. He is also a professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.  You can learn more about him here. This conversation centers largely on the issues of prevalence and cost data and the challenges of explaining the impact of NAFLD to non-stakeholders before Jeff ends with a remarkable anecdote.This conversation kicks off with Stephen discussing the need for robust prevalence data. Jeff agrees but notes that past data in HIV and Hepatitis C have led to challenges and overconfidence after initial estimates were proven high. This is an exciting and quick episode that mainly covers the findings of a recent Daniel D. Carvalho paper in Nature Reviews called “Epigenetic therapy in immune oncology” where the authors elaborate on new mechanisms of cancer treatments. Essentially, the epigenetic Cancer therapies that cause genes to reprogram the “on/off” state also awaken ancient relic viruses that lie dormant in our DNA, which subsequently leads to a massive immune response against the tumor. These mechanisms may play a role in treating aggressive forms of the disease that usually evade the immune system.
