How about a 2011 Jeep Liberty that runs terrible and has trouble on hot days : Ron's next up is a bit of a Frankenstein vehicle; the original engine has been replaced by something different .and well, its bits and pieces being held together in this 03 Tacoma. The OBD II port tests show no codes BUT the check engine light is on. Ron offers a definitive approach to get to a conclusion quickly.  He then covers basic mis-fire diagnostics on an 07 Escalade with multiple misfires. After walking the caller thru the steps he then takes a call on an 01 VW Gulf with a bad voltage regulator  and an owner that can't find the right part. Ron gives him the info he needs to solve his problem.  The last call of the hour is from a listener in Virginia that has an 04 Chevy Trailblazer where the transmission won't engage. Ron's solution and diagnostic step is simple and clear to determine the fault.  Visit us at https://www.cardoctorshow.com  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How My Dumb Mistakes And Failures Can Save You Money, Time And Headaches On Your Next Automotive DIY Project00:00 - OPENIn my experience, the best way to learn what to do (and what not to do) on any DIY project is to get advice from those who have actually done it before, and today you're going to hear about a major DIY project I did on my 2008 Audi that dragged on for more than 5-months because I wasn't properly prepared and backed into it. 01:25 - INTRONot everyone feels comfortable working on their own car, but if you're motivated to try, you could start with something simple, like an oil change or a coolant swap. If that's too simple, you could take on something more in-depth, like replacing your radiator along with the coolant or replacing brake pads and rotors. Those two DIY jobs are more difficult, but anyone with some mechanical aptitude, a suitable set of tools, and the right safety devices can manage those projects. My latest DIY Project was different though - not in terms of difficulty, but in terns of scope. It was a project that was going to require a lot more time and a lot more effort than I had planned on.02:45 - My 2008 Audi S4 Avant DIY ProjectAfter noticing some oil drops under my 2008 Audi S4 wagon, I decided it was time to do an engine reseal, replacing various gaskets and hoses that were leaking. The problem is, with a V8 crammed into the space originally meant for a 4-cylinder engine, there isn't much room to do the required work. The result? It was going to take much longer to replace various gaskets, hoses and other parts on the car than I originally estimated. 09:27 - Problems With My ApproachBecause I didn't realize the full scope of my project, I didn't do all the necessary research up front. I wasn't honest with myself about how long the project would take to complete. didn't have a solid back up plan for transportation and I 'bit off more than I could chew' in the time I estimated it would take to complete.11:15 - Seven Key Tips That Will Help Minimize Issues On Your Next DIY Project Know the scope of your project - Don't back into a major projectResearch how others have done the same project before starting Buy ALL necessary parts BEFORE starting the projectBuy/borrow all necessary tools BEFORE starting the projectKnow how much time it will take to complete your project Have a Back-up Transportation PlanDon't bite off more than you can chew31:35 - How Do You Insure DIY Project Success While Working? - Stay Organized! Keep removed parts and pieces organizedTag/photograph/ID part locations as you remove themKeep your work space clean while you work and at the end of each work dayKeep your tools organized while you work and at the end of each work day35:15 - Don't Forget About SafetyBuy/borrow a quality low-profile hydraulic jack to lift your vehicleUsed heavy-duty jack stands to support your vehicle If possible, invest in or borrow something like a QuickJack to safely lift your vehicleHave someone check on you periodically Keep your phone within reach in case of emergencyKeep one or more fire extinguishers nearby (use an ABC type extinguisher)40:15 - It's Not Over 'Till It's OverLearn to embrace the fear of starting the engine the first time after assemblyDouble check your work for loose parts/tools BEFORE starting the engineKeep an OBD II scanner handy to quickly diagnose any issuesDrive it further each day over several days to confirm all...

James Candelaria -- Corvette racer and owner of the company that created the Sentinel Camera system needed a new heart. He and his wife documented the whole journey on their Facebook page and racers from both series chimed in with love and support. Why You Need A Cheap OBD2 Scan Tool For Your Car

Better Than New

00:00 - Better Than New BONUS SEGMENT: Why You Need a Cheap OBD2 Scan ToolAnd the subject of today's Bonus segment is… an OBDII scan tool. Or more specifically, my pitch to you that you should have at least an inexpensive one so you can quickly check trouble codes and stay on top of your car or truck's operating condition. 00:45 - What is OBD2?OBD2 or On Board Diagnostic Two is a diagnostic system built into every passenger vehicle sold in the US since model year 1996 that allows a mechanic (or you) to interface with sensors in your vehicle that monitor the working condition of the components in the Powertrain, Chassis and Body of the vehicle 01:10 - What Is An OBD2 Scanner? It is a palm or tablet-size electronic device used to read OBD2 engine and drive train trouble codes. It works by plugging into the DLC or “Diagnostic Link Connector”, which is a universal 16-pin connector found typically under the dash on the driver's side of your vehicle. 01:30 - What Can An OBD II Scanner Do For You? When a Check Engine Light or other warning light illuminates on your dash, you can use an OBD2 scanner to check for trouble codes to get an idea of what's wrong with your vehicle. Codes for will start with a P, C, B or U, followed by a series of numbers. Codes that start with a “P” are for the powertrain (engine, transmission, ignition, emissions and fuel system)Codes that start with a “B” are for body components (airbags, seat belts)Codes with a “C” are for chassis components (brakes – ABS, brake fluid, etc.Codes that start with “U” (which means undefined) covers anything that doesn't fit in the other 3 code categories. After the Letters P,C,B or U will be a series of numbers that indicate the specific issue. Sometimes a check engine light indicates a major issue and at other times a code indicates a problem that needs to be fixed, but doesn't require immediate attention. Once you know the exact code(or codes), you can search online to find out what that code corresponds to so you can determine if you can fix it yourself or not. If you can make the repair yourself, then use the scan tool after you complete the repair to erase the trouble code(s) before driving your vehicle. If the code comes back again, that's an indication there may be something else wrong. 03:00 - Two Examples of How An OBDII Scanner Can Save You Time And Money Toyota Highlander - O2 Sensor CodeMy 2009 Toyota Highlander had a O2 sensor code (P0151)Using an OBD2 scanner, I was able to determine which sensor was defective Based on that info, I bought a new O2 sensor and replaced the faulty one myselfDoing the repair myself cost less than $100 dollars. A repair shop would have charged between $350 and $400 Audi Wagon - Engine Misfire Code Recent while running an errand, my Audi wagon developed an engine vibration. I assumed it was a coil, a spark plug or a fuel issueWhen I returned home, I used my inexpensive scanner to check for engine codesThere was one code (P0303) which is a cylinder 3 misfire. Typically that code indicates a bad spark plug or coil, so I bought both locally I replaced the spark plug and coil myself in less than an hourThe car started and ran fine and I deleted the code using the scannerThe local German repair shop wanted to charge at least an hour for labor ($180 + 10% tax), plus parts, which were going to be about $65, with a total of about $265. Total cost for parts to do this repair myself was about $30, plus my...

NEWS ALERT: Subaru issues urgent 'Stop Delivery' order on new Outback

Subaru Australia has just placed a ‘stop delivery’ order on all new model Subaru Outbacks. The ‘stop delivery’ mandate was issued late yesterday. Save thousands on any new car (Australia-only): https://autoexpert.com.au/contact AutoExpert discount roadside assistance package: https://247roadservices.com.au/autoexpert/ Did you like this report? You can help support the channel, securely via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=DSL9A3MWEMNBW&source=url Dealers are still selling the new Subaru Outback - meaning signing people up - and this indicates to me the problem is not that major, on the balance of probabilities. Details are not forthcoming at this stage. Subaru’s head office confirmed that the ‘stop delivery’ order is in place and they told me they are awaiting official confirmation from Japan over what the underlying issue really is. I would speculate that there’s a serious but not catastrophic potential software glitch. It could also be a physical component that’s replaceable, but it’s more likely to be a bug in the code. I really don’t know more than that. Software is the best and most likely reason for this ‘stop delivery’ edict. Cars are complex, they run on code, and all potential failure modes cannot be predicted in R&D. So it’s likely the fix is going to be a re-flash of some black box or other via the vehicle’s OBDII (diagnostics) port. If you are an early adopter and you have a new Outback in your driveway now, there’s probably no need for you to panic - but in due course it’s likely this issue - whatever it is - will also impact you. And you’ll probably have to visit the dealer for remedial action (or they might come to you in some circumstances). This may also become an official recall - but bear in mind recalls in ‘Straya occur only for serious potential safety defects, and this issue might not be safety related. It might just be some other operational concern. Anyway, Subaru was typically open and honest with me about it when I bounced them. That’s kinda how they roll - and one of the core reasons I respect them. They’re awaiting advice from Japan on exactly what the issue is and how the fix is going to be implemented. You’ll have to stand by for that - I’ll keep you updated. They’ve promised to call me when they know what’s going on, and I’ll drop everything and update you at that point. Before I let you go, maybe you’ve heard me say: ‘give it a few months before you go out and buy any new model after its debut’? Like wait 2-3 months before jumping in to the market with a brand-new model? Yeah, well, this would be why. Teething problems and how to avoid them, simply by being patient. (You’ll also get a better discount.) No need to panic. It’s not a catastrophe - just an inconvenience if you own one or you were planning on picking your new Outback over the next few days or weeks. I’ll keep you posted.

Andrew Rains joins us for this episode to talk through his racing history and then we went deeply into the Apex Pro telemetry system.  We have used our two Apex Pro’s many times this season and everyone has liked the simple interface while on track and the data analysis capability off track is simple and fast, yet powerful.  We have only scratched the surface to this point, but we wanted to make sure everyone we know was aware of the Apex Pro system and we all learned a great deal more about the system with Andrew.  After this episode, we can understand why he is a sought after coach at the track. Meanwhile, on our Dominating with Dawson segment, we thought it was time to discuss the concept of scrubbing speed, what it means and how to avoid it, as well as how it can be used to assist you on track to lower your lap times. As always, if you have any questions that you would like us to cover with Ben, please let us know in a (5 star?) podcast review or via email at GarageHeroesInTraining@gmail.com or in a comment on our social media. We hope you enjoy this episode! PS  Andrew and the Apex Pro team was kind enough to provide our listeners a discount code for a free Phone Mount when you buy an Apex Pro unit  on their website.  Please add both the unit and the phone mount and then enter the discount code. provided in the episode   Best regards, Vicki, Jennifer, Alan, and Bill Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers   Information about the Apex Pro can be found at:  https://apextrackcoach.com/ Andrew and the team can be contacted at:  apex@apextrackcoach.com or at Andrew@apextrackcoach.com Also, Andrew is competing well at the recent Grid Life GLTC NOLA event even though his #719 BMW is on treaded tires vs everyone else on racing slicks here:  Race 3:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7olV427w28 Race 4:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PufQoz_a7hA   Highlights from this episode include: 1)  We learn about Andrew’s extensive racing experience, as well as his current E36 M3 WRL and Grid Life GLTC BMW car, past, present, and future. 2)  Vicki thinks she is on mute.  Then she knows she is on mute.  Then it sinks in.  The life of a mom.  Lol. 3)  Andrew really has a great racing philosophy and a way of thinking about being at the track. 4)  We discuss several potential issues that people cite that prevents them from starting and a variety of ways to overcome them, including contacting Andrew or us at any point.  Every driver we know would love to have more people to share the track with.  It is much more fun for everyone. 5)  The discussion on the Apex Pro at 19:50 with one of Bill’s longest intros ever that Vicki jumped in and made even longer, lol. 6)  Andrew provided a great overview of the Apex Pro device and its operation at 23:20 7)  We begin to explain the detail of the actual operation and interpretation of the lights when on track and how the patented Apex Pro algorithms work in the background.  The best news for most of us is that it works even if you can't even spell algorithm. 8)  Vicki and Jennifer relate how the Apex Pro has helped them on track at their current level of driving.  Those simple little LED lights can provide so much feedback on track and so quickly, it really is amazing.  Especially when a driver may be early on in their learning and can often be overwhelmed with the number and speed of sensory inputs when driving at speed. 9)  We then go into the setup (that is super easy and quick) and beginning use of the data within the app that is collected automatically. 10)  Andrew even answers some of our “how do we” questions with useful tips and tricks, several that we had thought of to this point. 11)  Questions answered include:  Options for multiple drivers and endurance races, approximately how long will the battery last, how to save battery during the day if not powered within the car, how to add tracks, especially for autocross use, can I use the Apex Pro without a phone, how the auto-start and auto-stop features work and interact with the phone screen being on, what does the apex score mean and how to interpret it, some of the potential values and options to utilize the power of the notes section. 12)  How the Apex Pro light display works, what the light colors mean, and how to interpret the lights and probably most importantly, how you can use them to make driving changes on track during the stint. 13)  Andrew also goes into the other data you can get in your car if your phone is visible.  Then we go into the full data capabilities that are available post session using the Apex Pro app. 14)  Our resident engineer has his usual requests for future features.  He just can't help it.  Please bear with him, we try, every single day.  But it appears that Bill may finally have had a good question. 15)  Andrew then moved into the beginning level of looking at data, almost a 101 review.  Once you have used the unit, or any telemetry unit that offers data, this discussion would form a very good foundation for looking at your data the first time and how to correlate the data to your track feel/impression.  Intro at ~51:20 16)  Simple 101 process outline:  1)  Think about where you did not feel comfortable or where you think you may have left the most opportunity to improve,  2)  Look at those areas on the track map overview screen,   3)  Speed vs distance plot and check if the top of the speed trace is rounded (coast or slow transition) or is it sharp and you moved from full throttle to brake quickly,  4)  Look at your minimum speed in corners and if a fast corner you would like a u-shape and in slow corners, you would like a V-shape (fast is above ~60 mph or 100 kph) 17)  Options for exporting the data to larger visual areas, like an iPad or a computer as well as additional options, like Track Attack, to compare with other drivers who may use other data collection systems. 18)  Bill resumes his friction circle soap box discussion.  Andrew graciously tolerates it.  Is there any foundation to Bill’s theory?  Still tbd. 19)  We even had a chance to go into the Apex Pro Crew View feature and how it can be used.  Bill is getting more and more excited.  And then we started to discuss the ability to add in OBDII data. 20)  Options for integrating into other data systems and video options including Race Render. ~1:13:45 21)  Our team has been working on a comprehensive survey of all the data systems, but we have only completed the systems we have personally tested to this point.  If interested in the results or helping us try some of the missing systems, please let us know. 22)  How best to analyze multiple drivers and/or multiple laps within the Apex Pro system as well as external software systems. 23)  We end our discussion of Apex Pro discussion is at ~1:29 and begin our F&F Storytime questions

On this week’s episode of Grease the Wheels, we are talking a little bit of science fiction by specing out our ideal robot toolbox. There is a good shot that this is where we as an are going, so we thought we would throw it out into the universe and see if anyone wanted to build the thing. Give it a shape like R2D2, magnetic bolt trays with voice integration, a jump box, and the voice of H. Jon Benjamin and you have pretty much the perfect assistant. Build it like a tank, give it sensors to read OBDII, and bluetooth integration for your Curien N2 and it could pay for itself. We just hope the eventual Harbor Freight version of it understands english well enough because we don't know a lot of techs who are fluent in Mandarin. Either way, a lot of the technologies proposed in this episode already exist, we just have to put them all together with a powerful A.I.- what could go wrong! Also Uncle Jimmy goes over his Jimmy John’s order and names his robot toolbox! This episode is distributed by thewrenchingnetwork.com. Old Tech, New Tech is where we discuss automotive technology and compare advances against "the way it used to be." Has the technology made our driving experience better? More enjoyable? Safer? Easier? Or has the technology detracted from the pure driving moments that we all love so much? What is your favorite? "Old School Kool" vs. "New School Tech"This includes anti-lock brakes, traction control, fuel injection, GPS, digital dashboards, electronically adjusted suspension, OBDII, manual transmissions, dual clutches, adaptive headlights, laser/radar cruise controls, etc.

Hello and welcome to Overdrive a program that looks at cars and transport from a variety of angles . I’m David Brown And in this week’s news stories Nissan chooses Japan over UK to build new X-Trail car Nissan has confirmed that the new X-Trail originally planned for its Sunderland plant near Newcastle in the UK will instead be made in Japan. It said continued Brexit uncertainty is not helping firms to "plan for the future". Nissan has made cars at Sunderland since 1986 and employs almost 7,000 people. The government said Nissan's decision was "a blow to the sector" but that no jobs would go as a result, which suggests they will continue to build cars there but not expand with the new model. Tesla lost $976M in 2018 despite 4Q profit First the good news for Tesla They made a profit in the last quarter of 2018 of $139 million which was the on revenue of $7.2 billion, and this was the second consecutive quarter of profitability. But now the bad news – for the whole year they lost nearly $1 billion That’s better though than 2017 where they lost $1.9-billion Dongle lets you see how your car is performing Cars are now collecting a huge amount of information about how they are operating which can be of great help or just interest to the owner. But much of the information is hidden and would be distracting to view while you are driving and cumbersome to look at if you have to stay seated in the car. Almost every car made after 1996 has a connection port under the dashboard to connect diagnostic systems. This port is called the OBD-II port (on-board diagnostics). Scantool now makes a product the ODBLink MX+ ($140 Australian Dollars) which uses a wireless dongle to connect your car to your smartphone, tablet or Windows PC via Bluetooth. Super bowl car ads The super Bowl has been and gone for another year and some car companies showed they were prepared to produce specific ads and then pay $5.2 million for a 30 second slot during the game. In America it is a great offense for some, if you do not stand for the national anthem but it is quite acceptable to involve the national song in two critical activities, gambling and making profits. There were huge bets on how long Gladys Knight would take to sing the anthem and then Jeep used it as the background music to their ad that used iconic features as the famous 1945 picture of six marines raising the flag on atop Mount Suribachi, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, in World War II. Canadian union airs Super Bowl ad despite GM lawsuit threats Not all Super Bowl ads were aimed at patriotism, humour or sentimentality. Canada’s union for car workers aired its General Motors boycott campaign ad during the super bowl ignoring lawsuit threats if it went to air. The ad called for a boycott of Mexican-built General Motors Co. vehicles in an effort to save the Oshawa Assembly Plant, set to close at the end of this year. GM's Oshawa plant, which builds the Chevrolet and Impala and Cadillac XTS, is one of five North American plants GM is planning to indefinitely idle this year as the slow-selling products built at those plants are discontinued. Maserati Track Day We went to a Maserati track day and fanged around in cars with a total value of at least $2mill worth. Maserati COO tells us why that is a good thing. I like the guy. Suzuki Jimny We have a chat with Paul Murrell about the new Suzuki Jimny Quirky News And Brian Smith, Errol Smith and I discuss a range of topics including • AV displays the direction it is going to take (BS) • Oscar Mayer will pay you to drive the Wienermobile for a year (ES) • 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition looks back, seats just five (BS) You can find more information at Driven Media or previous programs are available as podcasts on iTunes or Spotify. This week on Custom Made I'm joined by serial entrepreneur, Dialexa Chairman, and Vinli CEO Mark Haidar who is sharing the chapters to date that tell the story of connected car platform, Vinli - from conception, to product launch at TechCrunch Disrupt's Startup Battlefield, and beyond. Mark discovered technology at a young age thanks to a couple of computers donated to his school by the United Nations. Born and raised in Lebanon, Mark founded his first tech company by the age of 17, and built award-winning technology systems before his 21st birthday. After moving to the U.S. to study at the University of Detroit Mercy, Mark led the development of a connected car project for the US Army. With aspirations to create a better world through technology, Mark co-founded Dialexa with our CEO, Scott Harper. As Dialexa grew they developed an internal incubator, Dialexa Labs, that has spun out three companies including Vinli, the world’s leading connected car platform, and Robin, the world's first robotic mowing service. Today, Mark is the Chief Executive Officer of Vinli, and sits on the board of Vinli, Dialexa, Nara, Robin Technologies, UNICEF USA (Great Plains Region), and is an active member of YPO. When he’s not in Dallas, Mark is sharing his story on the global stage, and advocating for children and refugee rights. The Dialexa Labs team designed and developed Vinli with the original mission of making the most disconnected mobile device in the world - automobiles - connected! The team conceived and created the most powerful and comprehensive connected car platform in the world, reimagining the in car experience for both drivers and passengers. The solution is comprised of the most powerful connected car platform and OBD-II device out there, the most comprehensive app store for any car or model, and the most diverse suite of applications and services for vehicles. Bob Rodriguez enjoyed working for a number of well-known Tier 1 and aftermarket companies (including Bosch, Lincoln Technical Institute, ASE, Mopar CAP and others). He started his career with Robert Bosch in Broadview IL in 1969. He networked with both Vo-Tech students and entry-level & in-service training providers around the country and chaired training committees for an alphabet soup of aftermarket associations. Rodriguez certified as an ASE Master Automobile Technician (CMAT), an Advanced Level Specialist (L1), a Light Diesel Vehicle specialist, an Alternate Fuels Technician (F1), and a Parts Specialist (P2). He even certified as a CNG Cylinder Inspector through CSA and earned certificates in alternative fuels, advanced automotive electronics, and OBD-II systems service. He now serves as an independent training and performance assessment consultant. His firm, Bob Rodriguez and Associates. Bob often asks, “Why?”  If he sees a problem and knows of a solution, he is not dissuaded by naysayers. He was once virtually “thrown off the stage” when advocating for a change of training practices. Bob has long believed in and sought the use of human performance appraisal, responsible and creative training design, and for new methods for delivering training content. Talking points: His mom was responsible for him getting into the business. He started with Bosch right out of college. He could speak German. Bob discusses his tenure with Bosch and how he looked at training differently within the Bosch organization. He wanted to do things differently than their current strategy. He knew that they could teach entry-level technicians (Pre-Tech) with a self-paced training approach (1984). He worked with the TTC and ATMC (ASIA) industry training groups Alternative’s to the clinic. Don’t cram everyone into a classroom. Too many training departments were driven by sales. He fought hard to implement training that was not driven by a sales pitch. At Bosch they were training on basics before they ever came to a factory school. Four levels of technical training or competence. The training must be targeted to the need of the individual. Installer Apprentice Journeyman Systems Technician A day without learning is a wasted day. Technical training should never include product selling. You should ask yourself what will be the outcome from the training you will get. How to “Remove Uninvited Google Apps from Launchpad” on Macs. Chris used Homebrew & the Cask to install all his applications on his Mac during his clean install. Lifehacker has a decent guide. Little Snitch is a great firewall to tell you which applications are trying to connect to the web. For example, Apple location services on want to connect to the internet every 10 seconds. That seems wasteful on a desktop. Chris reviews his experience with MailPile. Then he shares that he moved to Airmail. Checking system stats on your Mac? iStat Menus is great or there’s GeekTool. Less expensive Monity is another option, but it doesn’t do temperature. If you are just concerned with temperature, there’s TG Pro. Paul has Automatic connected to his OBD-II port in his vehicle. He can track his car’s health with his Apple Watch or his phone. You need Shia LaBeouf freestyle rapping. Just do it. External hard drives?
