“Through the Lens of Time” Nurse Chapel's new beau, Doctor Roger Korby, pays a visit to the Enterprise to get help with a dig on Vadia IX, a planet that's home to the descendants of an ancient, highly advanced civilization believed to have been capable of traveling across multiple galaxies and to have discovered immortality. The mission quickly takes a dangerous turn when the landing party becomes trapped inside a temple—or is it a prison? The structure and technology are clearly ancient and advanced, but uncovering their mysteries won't be easy. The team finds itself split up, trapped in different rooms—or maybe planes of existence. But they can still talk to each other and must put their noggins together and romantic tension aside to escape. Meanwhile, back on the ship, a lizard fight has broken out in sickbay. In this episode of Planetary Radio, we share a special panel recorded live at STLV: Trek to Vegas 2025, featuring Robert Picardo, actor and Planetary Society board member who played the Emergency Medical Hologram on ”Star Trek: Voyager,” and Tim Russ, actor, telescope enthusiast, and Voyager’s Lt. Tuvok. They’re joined by Andrew Pauly, director of marketing at The Planetary Society, and Ambre Trujillo, the Society’s digital community manager, for a conversation about how science fiction inspires real-world space exploration — and how fans can take action to protect it. Later in the episode, Jack Kiraly, director of government relations at The Planetary Society, discusses the recent wave of NASA employee departures and what it could mean for the future of space science. Show notes provided by Joe PelusoAs enthusiastic fans of pop culture we may sometimes forget that there are real flesh and blood people who make Captain Kirk's heroics come to life on the printed page, between the glossy covers of our favorite comics, the small screens in our homes, and the large screens in the local cineplex. There are so many wonderful creative men and women whose greatest desire is to share their stories with an eager and faithful public. Recently one of these amazing creatives passed fromour midst, but he left a legacy of mythic narratives that thrilled and enriched the lives of pop culture fans for decades. Join your hosts James, Keith, Joe, and returning guest, Michael Jan Friedman for a warm and wonderful tribute to Peter David.   Novels, comics, screenplays, video games and  more, Peter was a consummate creator who took us to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, the deep, dark depths of the oceans, the psyche of a tortured man/monster's mind, and the mutant world of the misunderstood. Many of our Mint faithful are familiar with Mr. David's work on Star Trek, Aquaman, The Incredible Hulk, and X-Factor, but if you stay till the end of this episode you will learn so much more of the life and works of this "incredible" man as recounted by his close friend Michael Jan Friedman. Engaging stories of a "fan boy" who lived his dream.    And there are still a myriad of stories to tell in the pop cultureuniverse, but it's undeniable that Peter David's stories will forever shine like the brightest stars in this vast universe of wonder and awe.

Strange New Worlds "Through the Lens of Time" takes us to the halfway point already...can you believe it? When Chapel, Dr. Korby, Spock, La'an, Uhura, Ensign Gambel and Beto Ortegas beam down to start work on an archeological dig, things go awry quickly. Locked inside what appears to be a temple or palace, the crew finds themselves separated with no way out. Strange New Worlds brings us back to horror meets science fiction within incredibly intense and creepy episode as the away team attempts to find their way out without ending up like the skeletons the find when they first enter the structure. We got some serious vibes from a familiar yet terrifying science fiction/horror movie from the 90s starring Sam Neil!

Jace welcomes Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing back to the show to chat about Star Trek. The guys start off by looking back on the second act of their Star Trek run specially for the two big events that took place during it, Day of Blood and Lore War. Their is plenty of talk about legacy, emotion and character with Lore and Kahless specifically. Then the discussion pivots to the new era of Star Trek that will be the setting for The Last Starship. A Star Trek story set farther into the future than any Star Trek story has ever explored. It is a darker universe following the catastrophic event known as The Burn, wherein all dilithium has become enert and 96% of Starfleet personal, along with trillions of citizens galaxy-wide, have lost their lives due to this unforeseen occurence. Into the chaos of these events, perhaps the most legendary Starship captain of all time, James T. Kirk, will return. It's a wonderful place for someone who has never read Star Trek to jump on, just as it will excite long-time readers with a tone that Star Trek hasn't explored much in the past. There is incredibly textured art by Adrian Bonilla and to hear Jackson and Collin tell it, he is as passionate about Star Trek as they are, so expect great things artistically. Final Order Cut-Off for The Last Starship is August 18th, so let your comic shop know that you want a copy and be ready when it arrives in shops on September 24th.

In this episode, we explore how artificial intelligence has been portrayed in popular culture, from the replicants of Blade Runner to the feminized AI of Ex Machina. We examine the fundamental philosophical questions these stories raise: What constitutes life? What separates consciousness from programming? At what point would we need to recognize an artificial entity as deserving rights and autonomy? The conversation takes us through foundational texts like Isaac Asimov's "The Feeling of Power" and Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," films like Zardoz and Logan's Run, and modern explorations of AI ethics. We discuss how these fictional portrayals often reveal more about human nature than about technology itself—particularly in how gender dynamics and toxic masculinity in the tech world manifest in our imagined AI futures.

When Ensign Gamble joins his first dustbuster club, he picks up a grenade and gets an emergency trip back to sicksbay. But after the rest of the team solves the escape room puzzle, Captain Batel goes Gorn on Gamble's ghost and Pelia opts for maximum drama. What's the only thing more embarrassing than being a documentary filmmaker? Who got a macaron for going poopoo in the potty? Why didn't Chapel do bits on blood magic? It's the episode that adds to the list of going concerns.Support the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social
