Today we speak to a man who has been in and around football for over 40 years. Mark Bowen played over 400 games at the top of English football for the likes of Tottenham, Norwich and West Ham, before transitioning into management as both a head coach and assistant. For much of his management career he has partnered with Mark Hughes, acting as his assistant manager at Man City, Stoke, Southampton, Fulham and QPR.  Most recently Mark has spent a number of years with Reading, and is currently going through a delicate process around his exit from the club; a conversation for another time.  However this is something that we have wanted to do for a long time. Quite a lot of our shows fall into the more serious ‘business of sport' category. Having got to know Mark, this is someone that has seen the inner workings of clubs transacting at the highest level, and has some incredible stories to tell off the back of it. From being at Man City when they were bought by Sheik Mansour and the Abu Dhabi Group to being in the opposing dugout for QPR when Aguero scored THAT goal, this played to the kid in both of us while emphasising the fact that the business of football isn't always a smooth process. Kick back and enjoy some proper tales of signings, sackings, and outrageous transfer bidding. On today's show we discuss: The birth of the new Man City: Which players did Sheik Mansour want to sign as a statement transfer when he bought the club? How do you integrate a load of new players to form a cohesive team when the money is flowing and budgets are virtually endless. The incredible transfer story of signing both Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta after the sale of one key player, and the conversation he had to have with Kompany when he arrived. Lionel Messi for £35m? How the club accidentally bid for one of the greatest players ever. Why was Mark Hughes fired by the club with the club flying in both the league and cups, and what happens to managers when they get that call? Tales from Stoke, Southampton, and QPR: Turning Stoke into a top performing Premier League club who were able to attract top European talent like Bojan and Shaqiri. Overseeing a QPR team struggling for survival in the League with Joey Barton as captain and Tony Fernandes as owner. The Man City title win story…from the QPR dugout: what does Mark attribute that memorable Aguero moment to? Moving to Southampton and the challenge of managing top teams when there is an agreement to sell players you want to keep. Football vs Money: Harry Redknapp's reaction to Mark leaving West Ham to sign for a Japanese club…and the number that persuaded him the offer was too good to turn down. How to manage your personal life in football when the team takes you away from your family and home. Is it worth it? Is it always about the money, or do players need to be incentivised by other things in and around clubs? Where was Mark at his happiest both as a player and a manager? STORY: Jonathan won $100,000 as the winner of The Apprentice. He took a large chunk of the money and left it sitting in the bank. He regrets never investing the money because it never made much from the bank. LEARNING: Your money won't grow if you put it in the bank. Ask questions to understand how an investment works.   “Never hesitate to ask questions about your finances and investments.”Jonathan Yabut  Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanyabut/ (Jonathan Yabut) is the proud Filipino winner of the hit Asian reality TV show, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Apprentice_Asia (The Apprentice Asia). For winning the show, he served for one year as Chief of Staff of AirAsia, reporting directly to Malaysian business mogul Tony Fernandes based in Kuala Lumpur. Today, he is Asia's leading motivational speaker on topics involving leadership, talent development of Gen Y workers, and office productivity. Worst investment everAs the winner of The Apprentice Asia, Jonathan got $100,000. That was quite a huge prize money for a 27-year-old. So apart from spending on things every millennial wants, such as shoes, travel, gadgets, he left a big chunk of it sitting in the bank. Jonathan's biggest regret now is that he never invested in investments such as stocks, bonds, money market, etc., way earlier. Had he invested that money as soon as he got it, it could have probably led to something more significant. Lessons learnedExpand your network and be around people who can nudge and advise you on where to invest your money and yield better returns. Never be ashamed of asking as many questions as you can, especially if you are entering or enrolling in a long-term investment. Andrew's takeawaysTake advantage of the many investment options available now. If you put your money in the bank, you expose yourself to the https://myworstinvestmentever.com/ep269-steve-anderson-make-successful-failures-like-amazon-and-protect-the-downside/ (shortfall risk) because it doesn't grow as it should. Actionable adviceNever be embarrassed if you don't know much about your finances and how it's going to be utilized. “. Anything that maximises human potential, evolving consciousness and helps people to do amazing things and lead inspiring lives is what interests Dr John Martini, world-renowned specialist in human behaviour, researcher, author and global educator. In this fascinating episode, he talks with Alex about how we are all needed in society and why the world needs everyone to make it work along with the unique heuristic values each individual lives by and how being honourable enough to have the courage to be yourself according to your highest value is what makes the difference. When you understand that setbacks are the seeds for comeback and that whatever we know there is an unknown beyond it you are truly on the journey to being where you want to be.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Every human being lives by a set of priorities and values. Whatever is highest in an individual's set of values they are spontaneously inspired to fulfil Our purpose at any moment is an expression of our highest priority value There is no right or wrong value system everyone has a unique set of values Everybody is needed in society; the world needs everyone to make it work. Being honourable enough to have the courage to be yourself according to your highest value is very profound. If you change your perceptions you change your neurochemistry You can change the ratios of all of the neurotransmitters firing by asking questions to alter what you are thinking Motivation is a symptom not a solution for humanity You have to find out what is intrinsically valuable to the individual and give them feedback to structure their lives with high-value activities Every event can be viewed as an opportunity if you ask how is this helping me? Successful people see feedback as comeback and a way of moving forward It's about how committed you are in the long term not short term gratification Values and morality are always set by those with the most power. Your heuristic values determine how you spend your money and your financial destiny You need to structure your finances and then they will compound over time When you are pursuing what's important to you, it doesn't have to be at the exclusion of everything else. Whatever we know there is an unknown beyond it   BEST MOMENTS ‘Setbacks are seeds for comeback' ‘It's not about what something is, it's about your perception of it' ‘If you change your perceptions your change your neurochemistry'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Business, Wealth and Mindset podcast series    Dr John Martini     ABOUT THE GUEST Dr John Demartini is a world-renowned specialist in human behaviour, a researcher, author and global educator. In this very special show, John Lee is joined by Tony Fernandes, the CEO of AirAsia, and part owner of Queen's Park Rangers, for a masterclass discussion about entrepreneurship, success, and how to traverse the business world.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Business is business, no matter what the sector. The founding principle is to maximise the top line, minimise the costs, and generate a good balance sheet with cash. By implementing the right culture, we lessen the work we have to do in attracting the top talent, as they begin to seek us out. All companies are built upon a great product. Too many times, people forget about marketing and branding, and yet the single most valuable thing you can do is to effectively invest in your brand. Technology has allowed an entry point into business for anyone. It has completely levelled the playing field. Ideas can be brought swiftly to fruition. There are no more barriers to entry. BEST MOMENTS 'I always had that feeling - that business is business' 'Becoming a leader is about surrounding yourself with people who are better at what they do than you are' 'You've really disrupted the disruptive' 'Surround yourself with great people'  VALUABLE RESOURCES Tony Fernandes Twitter - https://twitter.com/tonyfernandes_?lang=en ABOUT THE HOST JOHN LEE John was born to Chinese parents who ran a takeaway in the north of England, where he helped out washing dishes from the age of eleven. One of the more recent cases of well meaning owners getting it wrong at the top of the English game.  When F1 tycoons Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore handed the keys to Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes, Ranger's fans thought the sky was the limit but that wasn't the case. Fernandes all starry eyed had his sights set on Champions League football with his ambitious Four Year Plan. We are talking huge transfers of Rio Ferdinand and Loic Remy, record breaking losses and undoubted ambition as we pull back the curtain at what has gone wrong at Loftus Road.

Tucked into this beautiful landscape is a small company that sells to consumers in over 100 countries around the world, all based out of just a single warehouse and office. This small store is freeze-drying fruit from local farms that would otherwise go bad, hence its name: The Rotten Fruit Box. Behind this nearly-solo startup, is Tony Fernandes. Healthy freeze-dried fruit snacks delivered to your door (or office). They use 100% fruit, nothing else added, sourced from small farmers. They focus on reducing food waste by using "ugly" fruit that would not otherwise find its way to supermarkets. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/heart-of-waraba/support

Welcome to East West Hurricane! 🌪We update you on the most essential news from Asia in tech, media, and business—the things you need to know that you probably haven’t heard in Western media.Follow us on Twitter and Instagram! ⚡️Liquor Brand Kweichow Moutai Hurt by Corruption 🍶A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Chinese liquor brand Kweichow Moutai has become the most valuable alcohol company in the world with a market cap of $260 Billion. The company experienced significant growth in the first half of 2020 and served as a good illustration of the size of the Chinese market!Since that article, Kweichow Moutai has not been doing so well. Last week, the company lost $25 Billion in market cap after Chinese state publication People’s Daily wrote an article accusing Moutai of benefitting from corruption. The article referenced comments from Moutai’s former chairman Yuan Renguo, who acknowledged that liquor sales related to corruption are part of business. Yuan was since removed as chairman in May 2018 and arrested on corruption charges. In the past few weeks, several senior executives have also faced investigations relating to corruption. Moutai is still one of the top ten biggest companies in China, making this a major issue for the business community. AirAsia Rehires Workers For Agriculture E-Commerce 🌽AirAsia is one of the most successful low-cost carriers in Asia, owned by famous Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes. The Kuala Lumpur-headquartered company laid off 300 employees in June due to coronavirus-related financial difficulties. While this has been a rough situation for the company, AirAsia has been both creative and compassionate with their recently laid off employees.AirAsia has also launched an agriculture e-commerce platform called Ourfarm delivering fresh produce to Food & Beverage businesses. Many of the new employees at Ourfarm were former AirAsia employees who have now been rehired. This is an interesting pivot for an airline to get into agriculture e-commerce, which is definitely an industry growing more than airlines right now. AirAsia also benefits from being part of the Tune Group, the broader holding company founded by Tony Fernandes. Whether this new agri-business works for AirAsia or not, it required true determination and creativity.New Regulation for Young Online Fans 🚸The Cyberspace Administration of China is launching a new campaign to monitor the online activity of minors in China. This includes prohibitions against pornography, violence, and “inappropriate cartoons.” The campaign also targets young fans of virtual idols and influencers from engaging in certain behaviours. Internet culture in China can have some pretty intense, passionate young fans. Huge groups of fans under the age of 18 often purchase mass quantities of merchandise without having their own stable income or with aggressive influence from fan groups. Social media platform Weibo has started implementing new rules around fan management, after controversial examples of exploitation such as the fanbase of actor/singer Xiao Zhan using high-pressure sales tactics to mass purchase products and encourage users to file complaints. If you understand internet culture, you might see some parallels with the West. Internet watchdogs, especially in Europe, are looking at ways to regulate the behaviour of young people on the internet, who are often vulnerable to things like buying loot boxes for video games. No matter the regulation, people will always be able to influence, young impressionable internet users. This is a public episode. The index, however, closed at 41,932.56 level, up 59.83 points or 0.14 per cent. The packaged foods company, which is scheduled to announce its Q4CY19 results on February 13, 2020, surpassed its previous high of Rs 15,147, recorded on October 31, 2019.  The stock closed 3.23 per cent higher at Rs 15,347.  A sharp surge in stock price has seen the company's market capitalisation balloon to near Rs 1.5-trillion mark. Currently, Nestle India stands at 20th position in the overall ranking of listed companies with a market cap of Rs 1.47 trillion, BSE data shows. On the NSE, the broader Nifty50 index hit a fresh high of 12,389.05-mark. The index, eventually, settled at 12,355.50-mark, up 12.20 points or 0.099 per cent. All the key sectoral indices closed the day with gains, except Nifty Metal index that slipped 1.32 per cent on profit booking. On the upside, the Nifty FMCG index hit a 2 month high of 31,508 points in the intra-day today as fast-moving consumer goods companies were trading actively on the index on expectations of recovery in demand. The index, which hit its highest level since November 15, 2019, settled 0.24 per cent higher on the NSE. That apart, Thursday turned out to be another day for outperformance for the broader markets. The S&P BSE small-cap index surged nearly 1 per cent in the intra-day trade today before settling 0.78 per cent higher at 14,647.54. The S&P BSE mid-cap index, on the other hand, ended at 15,625.23 level, up 0.77 per cent. It had gained 0.9 per cent in the intra-day trade. In company-specific news, senior executives of AirAsia including CEO Tony Fernandes have been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case. The ED probe is related to allegations that the airline tried to manipulate government policies through corrupt means to get the international licence for its Indian venture AirAsia India Limited. Here's how the global markets performed today:  World stocks inched ahead to a record high on Thursday after the United States and China signed an initial deal to defuse their 18-month trade war.  MSCI’s broadest index of world stocks firmed 0.03 per cent in Asia, while its index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.13 per cent. Japan’s Nikkei rose 0.14 per cent while mainland China’s Shanghai Composite index was almost flat. The pan-European STOXX 600 index was up 0.1 per cent.

Tatas to control AirAsia India: Story behind

From now onwards, all the core operations, including commercial, finance, training and operations of AirAsia India will be directed independently by Tata Sons, not its Malaysian parent, AirAsia Berhad, holding 51 and 49 per cent shares respectively.  This happened after both companies agreed to amend a controversial brand licensing agreement, which was signed in 2013, and handed power and rights to use the AirAsia brand. However, it was mired in controversy as key decisions needed approval from the parent. Besides, this also raised concerns that the daily management was being handled by foreign nationals. India’s civil aviation regulations mandate the effective control of airlines jointly owned by Indian and foreign entities lie with the Indian firm. People in the know said both entities were finalising the revised agreement. A draft agreement submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and reviewed by Business Standard says that sales and distribution, revenue management, network planning, catering and in-flight services, finance and corporate finance, customer experience, engineering, and leasing contracts will now be under the sole discretion of AirAsia India. These require approval from the parent under the present agreement. A spokesperson of AirAsia Berhad directed the queries to the Indian unit, but the AirAsia India spokesperson refused to comment. In case you don’t know, AirAsia Berhad has similar agreements with the other three affiliates — Thai AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, and Indonesia AirAsia. These, along with AirAsia India, pay annual fees for using the AirAsia brand. In view of this recent move, a Tata group executive said and I quote “Earlier, a lot of core functions such as revenue management, sales, and leasing needed expertise of the joint venture partner, but now the airline is fully capable of handling the functions.” The Tatas have already appointed key executives from its group firms in Air Asia India. In 2018, it appointed Tata lifer Sunil Bhaskaran as chief executive. Last month, it appointed Titan’s Vikas Agarwal as chief financial officer. And has appointed Tata Steel executive Ranganathan R advisor to the CEO, recently.  The commercial unit now has a full-fledged office at Gurugram and has established a crew training unit at Bengaluru. Recently, it appointed former IndiGo executive Ankur Garg as chief commercial officer. However, people in the know said the Tatas sought the amendment after being nudged by the aviation ministry, which is yet to give its nod for the airline’s foreign operations. The Delhi High Court had also ordered an investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in 2017, following which the DGCA had given it a clean chit. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had, on May 29, raided the offices of AirAsia India. This was after it had filed a complaint against Tony Fernandes and others on May 28 for allegedly lobbying with the government for overseas flight permits and violating rules preventing foreign airlines from controlling Indian operators.  Despite having more than 20 aircraft, the carrier is waiting for permission to fly abroad as government officials remain cautious... 242: How Tony Fernandes Bought an Airline for Under $1 and Made it a Leading Carrier

Foundr Magazine Podcast with Nathan Chan

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2019 43:52

Tony Fernandes has worn many hats over the course of his decades-long career. And if the Group CEO of AirAsia (and former host of The Apprentice Asia) ever finds himself dissatisfied with a signature look, he’ll just invent a new one. “You have to keep renewing yourself,” Fernandes says. “You’re only as good as tomorrow.” That philosophy undergirds Fernandes’s entire career trajectory. Before starting what is now one of the world’s most successful budget airlines, Fernandes was an accountant, working briefly for the likes of Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Communications. He then reinvented himself within the music business, where he served as a Warner Music executive in Malaysia. Fernandes’s latest reinvention is his biggest, and most complex. He’s the co-founder and Chairman of Tune Group, a conglomerate of hotel, automotive, financial services, education, media, and telecommunications industries subsidiaries. And he sits at the helm of AirAsia, a budget, no-frills airline that has revolutionized travel in Southeast Asia. After purchasing the then-bankrupt airline for a shocking 24 U.S. cents, Fernandes has grown the brand to a net worth of more than $1.5 billion. AirAsia is now the fourth-largest airline in Asia, behind only the big Chinese carriers (in 2017, AirAsia flew over 90 million passengers), and it recently embarked on an ambitious program that will see the airline transform itself into a travel technology company. To hear Fernandes tell it, two primary factors differentiate AirAsia from other companies. For starters, the company has always embraced digitization. And secondly, the organization is built on inclusivity and creating a fantastic work culture. Here’s how Fernandes has leveraged those strengths to build a company that no one thought possible. Pursuing a Childhood Dream In 2001, during Fernandes’s more than decade-long stint in the music business, digital advancements began to threaten deeply entrenched industry norms. Fernandes spotted an opportunity, but his colleagues weren’t so keen on the digital revolution. “Napster had come along and Spotify was just starting, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is super exciting for the music industry,’” Fernandes says. “But I was a lone voice.” No one at Warner Music or Time Warner Inc. (where Fernandes was working at the time) thought it was a good idea. “They thought the internet would destroy music,” Fernandes says. “My premise was that we can’t hold technology back and that this was a fantastic distribution model to create more revenue.” But his vision didn’t gain traction, and when Time Warner merged with AOL, he decided to bid adieu to his music industry career. He was sitting in a bar in London, trying to figure out what to do next with his life, when he saw mention of the budget airline easyJet on the pub’s TV. Fernandes instantly recalled his childhood love of planes. “Always from a very young age, I’d told my dad, ‘I’m gonna own an airline one day,’” he says. “That’s one of those things you say, but you’re not entirely sure you’re gonna do. But I always said it. And so I thought, ‘Well, this could be the time.’” It might seem like a bold move for a music industry exec to presume he could run an airline, but Fernandes was motivated by one simple premise: YOLO. “I thought… ‘You only live once,’” he says. “If I fail, I fail. It’s okay. I’ll go get a job doing something else. But I don’t want to sit there at 55 and say, ‘I wish I did it.’” Fernandes’s idea gained further traction after he started studying the models of low-cost airlines such as RyanAir. (RyanAir’s then-Director of Group Operations would later become a shareholder of Fernandes’s airline.) Inspired by what he refers to as an “amazing concept,” Fernandes gathered up some partners and returned to Malaysia for a meeting with the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister agreed to let Fernandes and his partners into the airline industry, but only if they purchased an existing airline. As a result of some devastating circumstances, there were a lot of opportunities. Fernandes was looking to purchase an airline around the time of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, which had sent the industry reeling. He ended up purchasing AirAsia, a Malaysian government-owned airline that was $11 million in debt, for a grand total of 24 U.S. cents. Driving Growth After purchasing AirAsia, Fernandes knew he had to move fast. “It was very clear to me once we started moving that…I was going to put the foot to the accelerator because there were some big around me,” Fernandes says. “When you have something, scaling up is important.” Luckily, Fernandes spotted multiple avenues for growth. For starters, he knew that at the time he acquired AirAsia, only 6 percent of Malaysians flew. If he could capture even a portion of the other 94 percent, he’d be in business. What’s more, he was willing to fly to places that most airlines didn’t go. “A lot of our growth has come from destinations that no one did before,” he says. But perhaps AirAsia’s biggest differentiator was its use of the internet at a time when, globally, many still weren’t online. “Back in 2001, most people didn’t even have internet yet,” Fernandes says. “But I said, ‘Trust me, when I put a fare at 2  dollars, people are going to find their way to the internet.’” Since then, AirAsia has been religious about tracking and keeping data. So when huge brands started to embrace digitization many years later, they were already ahead of the game. Still, Fernandes knew he was at a disadvantage, due to his lack of industry knowledge, so he accelerated his learning to ensure he could continue AirAsia’s rapid growth. He sat down with engineers, pilots, simulators, and cabin crews; learned how to change a wheel; and generally threw himself into understanding the intricate workings of planes and airlines. “I was a sponge,” Fernandes says. “I took everything in.” A strong focus on innovation, learning, and growth helped Fernandes and his team make up for what they lacked in capital. “Let’s be real, three guys from the music business coming in to start an airline is not the most convincing business ,” Fernandes says. “No bank gave me a cup of coffee. Did we want capital? Of course. But we didn’t have it. But again…we built a massive airline with very little capital.” In fact, AirAsia only raised one round—$30 million around year three—before launching its initial public offering (IPO). “I’m old-fashioned in that aspect,” Fernandes says. “I believe in cash. I believe in making some profit. If you have a model where you can make money, make money. And of course reinvest some of that money, which we did.” Much of that money went into flying to new places. “The product was going places that no one else wanted to go,” Fernandes says. “We couldn’t stand still… kept adding routes and new destinations.” While the airline continues to add new destinations, today it’s equally focused on developing a multi-pronged digital strategy. The organization is digitizing all of its processes to enhance efficiency and the customer experience. It’s also attempting to create a comprehensive travel ecosystem that will enable users to book train tickets, purchase concert or other event tickets, use financial services, and so on, all from one central hub. “We’re using and building platforms that will provide more value to my customers…and it’s an exciting vision,” Fernandes says. “There’s a huge potential if we can execute well.” That execution hinges on a top-notch team working cohesively and effectively. Luckily, Fernandes has been building that since day one. Building a Dynamite Culture “Culture is, I think, the most important thing in the success of AirAsia,” Fernandes says. Fundamental to that culture is a bedrock of transparency and trust—even among 24,000 staff. “It is by complete choice that we’re open plan,” Fernandes says. “When you have an office, you have all these invisible walls. … So one day I just came in and smashed all the offices. I brought a contractor in and just tore them all down. And we’ve been open-plan ever since.” In keeping with the open office concept, AirAsia also employs a fairly flat organizational structure. “I like to think we utilize everyone’s brain,” Fernandes says. “We put everyone…in the same building. Everyone eats in the same place, everyone goes to the same gym. I want people who believe they can do a lot more and grow in this company.” This spirit of inclusivity extends to diversity. “We embrace diversity,” Fernandes says. “We don’t care what race, creed, color, sexual orientation you are. And I think that’s a strength. Because that gives us a huge diversity in our workplace, and a huge ability to attract great talent and great ideas. … I wanna have a fantastic, multi-ethnic, diverse company, and I think we’re not far from that.” Of course, when you’re dealing with a team of 24,000 people, it’s easy for bureaucracy to rear its ugly head. “We got big, and politics and bureaucracy creep in,” Fernandes says. “But it’s not something I’m gonna run away from. I confront it because bureaucracy and politics is the cancer of any organization” One strategy the team uses to confront bureaucracy is simply having fun. “I think too many business leaders take life too seriously,” Fernandes says. “Too many entrepreneurs get too stressed. Have a balance. You don’t have to work 18 hours a day. Make sure you give time to your family and your kids and your friends.” In Fernandes’s view, this juggling act is worth it in pursuit of building a great team. “You’ve gotta surround yourself with good people, and you’ve gotta be prepared to listen,” he says. “Too many founder CEOs think they know it all. … You can have all the ideas you want in the world, but the execution is what it’s about, and you need a good team.” Luckily, developing a great team has always been fundamental to Fernandes’s vision for AirAsia. “My vision was to create a great place to work—a fair place to work, where it didn’t matter whether you…had money or a great education, but if you had a great brain and you had the will and belief, you could achieve anything in this airline,” he says. “To turn a raw diamond into a diamond—and we have so many of those. … If you really push me, it’s allowing a lot of my staff to live their dreams—that would be something I’d be most proud about.” That spirit of affirmation and inclusivity extends from AirAsia’s team members to its customers. In spite of the many ways that Fernandes and his airline have reinvented themselves over the years, the company’s slogan has remained the same since Fernandes first developed his vision all those years ago: Now everyone can fly. 5 Mini-Lessons in Entrepreneurship from Tony Fernandes Spend Money on Branding and PR “Great ideas are great ideas…only people know about them,” Fernandes says. “Too many businesses don’t spend enough on branding and marketing. Keep a budget for that.” Always Be Reinventing “The world is littered with products that didn’t reinvent themselves,” Fernandes says. For example, he references Nokia. “Who believe a world without Nokia phones? They were it.” Today, of course, the phone landscape is very different. Balance Focus With Innovation. “You have to live within your means and live within your resources,” Fernandes concedes. “But you also can’t stand still. It’s a balance. But life is a balance. Everything you do is a balance.” Don’t Worry so Much About Failure “Failure doesn’t worry me, because I’d rather fail than not try at all,” Fernandes says. “Many people are too worried about failing, so they don’t do anything. I’ve had many failures… I don’t have any regrets, because if I didn’t try I didn’t know.” Go With Your Gut “You can do all the marketing research you want,” Fernandes says. “You just gotta go with your heart sometimes and do it.” Key Takeaways Tony’s background in the music industry and how he wound up interested in airlines The wild story behind how he purchased AirAsia for 30 Australian cents The fundamental growth strategies he used on AirAsia His thoughts on funding AirAsia’s digital strategy On expanding your product line and trusting your gut AirAsia’s culture and why he thinks it’s the single most important factor in their success His advice on building a founding team How he came to host The Apprentice Asia His thoughts on personal branding as a CEO or founder How he views failure

Shashank Nigam, author of Soar and CEO of Simpliflying, joins the Invincible Brand Podcast to share some powerful strategies on how today’s leading airlines have managed to build sustainable trust – and how that serves them when undesirable incidents risk occurring. About this episode The airline industry is tough. The risks are exponential; profit margins are difficult to maintain; the general public is critical, emotional, and has the ability to instil a world of impact on brand equity and reputation; regulatory compliance is strict and severe… and the list goes on. And yet, there are some airlines out there that just simply get it. These airlines continue to do phenomenal work in creating brands that deliver an experience and put people first, fostering a culture that aspires to achieve brand invincibility and works proactively towards this objective every day. Fortunately for the rest of us, there are so many crisis ready lessons and strategies that can be taken from these airlines and adapted into your own organization, no matter its industry. In this week’s episode of the Invincible Brand Podcast, Shashank sat down with me to discuss the strategies, mindsets, and crisis management failures and successes that he has seen in his work with over 90 of these airlines over the past several years. This episode explores: What the strongest, most profitable, and beloved airlines have in common-and what you can learn from their success and strive for invincibility. Why achieving brand invincibility should be aspirational. How the CEO of AirAsia, Tony Fernandes, single-handedly raised the bar for airline crisis management, and the important lessons you can learn from his decisions and actions. A fascinating example of how a stagnant crisis management plan hindered Thai Airways’s chance to effectively manage an issue.
