As much as videogames tend to be about wreaking havoc and wrecking stuff, there are relatively few that actually let you tear through and collapse the buildings that dot their landscapes. We're not sure why it took us 601 episodes to reach the topic of games where you can wreck buildings, but here we are, and after that we'll get into Tetris Forever, Rise of the Golden Idol, Slitterhead, Super Nintendo World news, and the game characters you wouldn't want to have over for Thanksgiving. Question of the Week:  Is there a song you associate strongly with a specific videogame - whether because of its themes or a specific memory of playing them together - even thought it isn't actually connected to that game? Break song is Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon. Vidjagame Apocalypse theme by Matthew Joseph Payne.

Happy new moon, everybody!   I have a very special Oscar Encore episode for you today -- in celebration of our guests little-film-that-could EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE scoring 11 (11!) Oscar nominations. Yes, the Oscars goes down in a few weeks on March 12th and it just seems worth pausing on how this remarkable non-sequel, non-superhero, paltry-budged, genre-smashing flick is suddenly poised for recognition in categories like (no biggie!) Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress.... and on and on. Some history! Way back in November 2021 I was in theatres in downtown Toronto and saw a preview for EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE. The trailer blew me away and when I got home I remembered at the beginning it said "A Film By Daniels". Daniels? Who's Daniels!? I started googling and discovered it was two guys named Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert who have been making films together since college. They'd made one feature film before called SWISS ARMY MAN (also known as the 'Daniel Radcliffe Farting Corpse Movie') and a slate of incredible music videos like TONGUES by Joywave, SIMPLE SONG by The Shins, and TURN DOWN FOR WHAT by DJ Snake and Lil Jon ... which has over 1.1 billion views! I fell into a rabbit hole soaking up their incredibly creative, challenging, boundary-pushing art and reached out to Daniel Kwan (@dunkwun) to invite the guys on 3 Books. We started trading long thoughtful emails about formative books while the background buzz on their movie kept building. It started limited runs in New York and LA and the Rotten Tomatoes score was 99%! And then, just a few days before the movie got a national distribution, we sat down for this moment-in-time conversation on 3 Books.   And now: To mark the incredible run the film's had since then we've done a very special edit of the conversation. It's hot! It's tight! It's fresh! It's sizzling! And if after listening to this you want the "Directors Cut" just scroll back to Chapter 101 for the full-length "extra hour" version.   I feel strongly that this is the type of art we need in the world today -- brave, risky, challenging, beautiful, profound. So much of what gets made, especially in the big-budget worlds of film, music, and podcasting, is, you know, repetitive. It's easier! That's what makes what Daniels is doing so important. It's been a massive honor getting to know Daniels "before they were cool" all the way up to this big moment at the Oscars on March 12th.   I hope you enjoy this special Bookmark Episode of 3 Books. Enjoy!

Cinematographer Larkin Seiple on shooting Everything Everywhere All At Once, Swiss Army Man, and the Emmy nominated Gaslit

The Cinematography Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2022 92:08

When cinematographer Larkin Seiple first saw the script for Everything Everywhere All At Once he thought: This is very long and how in the world are we going to shoot this? But having worked with directing team Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (known collectively as Daniels) for ten years, he knew the film would be unique, creative and fun. Larkin loves telling stories through the medium of film, and Everything Everywhere explores the multiverse concept as the most ridiculous, messy, scary, poignant, and mind-blowing place. Everything Everywhere All At Once contains many different scenes referencing dozens of films with a multitude of looks. Larkin loved creating so many mini movies, and he had specific ideas for the lighting and continuity for most of the universes- changing up the lighting, lenses and even the aspect ratios for each universe and what it was referencing. In order to keep to any kind of schedule or budget, the team needed to shoot as much as possible in one location. They shot primarily in two places- a giant empty office building with the atrium, stairway, elevator and cubicles in Simi Valley, and DC Stages in downtown LA, which gave them about 40 different sets to choose from. Principal photography was 36 days, mostly in the Simi Valley office building. The Daniels always scout things in advance and try to find the best locations for the budget, which was about $15 million- not a lot for such an ambitious movie. Larkin had to creatively and carefully compose shots so that the office location didn't seem like a big empty space, and focused on small details and transitions, shooting scenes as efficiently as possible. Fortunately, a lot of sets in the office building were already there, leftover from other film shoots, such as the elevator set and the kinky office sex room, which allowed them to add it into the movie. Directors Daniels often writes a script with just the bare bones of what they're looking for, with only a line for action, such as “fanny pack fight,” leaving it up to Larkin and the fight coordinators to decide how to shoot it. They operate as a sort of hive mind, and each Daniel really knows how the movie cuts together in their head. Once he completed film school, Larkin realized that, unlike a director, as a cinematographer he could work on many different projects per year. He enjoys the collaborative element of filmmaking and started his career as a gaffer and electrician. He realized that if he wanted to become a cinematographer, he needed to quit doing side projects as a gaffer or electrician to concentrate on only working and shooting as a DP. Larkin began shooting music videos and beauty commercials, until he was able to make a living off of shooting commercials, while picking and choosing what music videos he wanted to do. Working on music videos led him to meeting the Daniels. One of their most memorable music videos is Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon, which stars Dan Kwan- ½ of Daniels- as one of the main performers in the video. Another noteable video Larkin shot was This Is America by Childish Gambino (Donald Glover), directed by Hiro Murai. After working on several music videos together, Larkin shot the Daniels first feature, Swiss Army Man. Swiss Army Man is a strange and surreal movie about a man (Paul Dano) stranded on a deserted island who befriends a dead body (Daniel Radcliffe) that washes ashore. Hank is able to use the dead body to get off the island and he begins to find his way home, believing that the dead man is talking to him and helping him stay alive. They shot in Los Angeles, the woods near San Francisco, and up in Humboldt County under the giant redwoods, with a tiny crew. Actor Daniel Radcliffe was very enthusiastic about playing the dead man, and even though they had a corpse dummy for the film, he refused to let them use it. He was in every scene as the dead guy with Paul Dano, even when just playing dead. Most recently,

The best movie I have seen in years is called Everything, Everywhere All At Once and it was written and directed by Daniels. Daniels? Yes, Daniels. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, to be specific. Two brilliant artists who met in college and began stitching together short films before working on music videos like Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil John (over a billion views), Simple Song by The Shins, and Tongues by Joywave. Watch those to see their energy and magic.   Daniels made their feature-length debut at Sundance in 2016 with Swiss Army Man also known as the “Daniel Radcliffe farting corpse movie” and then followed it up with this twisting multiverse action flick Everything Everywhere All At Once starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and Jamie Lee Curtis.   And how's this arthouse flick (with a paltry $25 million dollar budget!) doing? Well, it is the highest rated film of the decade on Rotten Tomatoes. It's being credited with bringing back multiplex crowds post-pandemic. And the people who see it and love it (like I did) end up going back to see it again and again. (You'll pick up so much more on the second time through and now I'm just itching for a third!)   Daniels create art for art's sake — that David Foster Wallace Nature of the Fun ethos we've talked about before — and the result is this incredibly provocative and non-conformist stuff that just squeezes your mind until the smiles and tears start rushing out.   Let's flip the page into Chapter 101 now…   What You'll Learn: What is the greatest compliment for a film-maker? Why should you journal about a project before sharing it with an audience? What is the alpha-verse? Why is kindness a power? How can we evaluate our own projects? Welcome DANIELS (aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) to talk about Everything Everywhere All at Once, purpose, parental expectations, unethical attention extraction, and eau de filmmaking. More about Everything Everywhere All at Once Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, the film is a hilarious and big-hearted sci-fi action adventure about an exhausted Chinese American woman (Michelle Yeoh) who can't seem to finish her taxes. Starring: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, James Hong, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr, and Jamie Lee Curtis. More about DANIELS Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as DANIELS, have been writing and directing together for over a decade, initially with a slew of viral music videos, commercials, and short films, then with feature films and TV directing. They have directed music videos for Manchester Orchestra, Foster the People, and won a VMA for their video for “Turn Down For What,” which Scheinert bullied Kwan into being the lead actor in. NSW Premier shocked by Hillsong footage Hillsong Avoid Fine The New South Wales premier, Dominic Perrottet, says he was “incredibly disappointed” to see footage of young Hillsong parishioners dancing and singing to music and the church could be fined if found to have breached the state's Covid public health order. Photos and videos posted on Hillsong's social media accounts over the past two days showed crowds of people singing without masks during services and dancing to pop music that was non-devotional. The camp, which is aimed at 15- to 17-year-olds, is due to finish on Saturday. Hillsong spokesperson denied the event was essentially a music festival. “These events are our annual high school-aged youth camps, and are not similar to a music festival in any way,” the spokesperson said. “Outdoor Christian services are held during the camp but these are only a small part of the program … and any singing is only a small part of each service (a video circulating on social media today reflects a few minutes of this part of the program).” When pressed on how large groups of young people dancing to songs such as Turn Down For What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon constituted a religious service, the Hillsong spokesperson did not respond. After several years of atrocious headlines Hillsong needs to pay more attention to detail and more attention to perception. And in my opinion, trying to pass a youth camp off as a Sunday Service type of event just does not cut it. That is my opinion.
