What if smartphones are causing the youth mental health crisis? In this episode of the Habits and Hustle podcast, I talk with social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, as he reveals how the "great rewiring of childhood" between 2010-2015 led to alarming increases in anxiety and depression among children and teens. We discuss how we've created a contradictory world of overprotection in real life but underprotection online, leaving children vulnerable to predators and mental health challenges. We also dive into why play is essential (he calls it "Vitamin P"), how technology fragments attention spans, and why collective action is our best hope for change. Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist, Professor at NYU, and co-founder of Let Grow, an organization dedicated to promoting childhood independence. The Banter: After getting back from Japan, we have a proposal being given for adult uniforms. For everyday life – like work, and normal routines – uniforms are in (no thoughts necessary). But for going out on dates with husbands, you can wear all kinds of clothes. The Meat: It's time for Pearl's proverbs. Yes, truth bombs from the big sister. Teeth don't brush themselves... Our microbiome doesn't flourish by itself. Your garden doesn't weed itself. So, when we go into menopause there are things we can do to make life healthier, do enrich ourselves, to make ourselves strong. There are things we can and SHOULD do. Otherwise they will atrophy by divine design. Here in our earthsuit, we must take care of it. If carbs are so BAD, why is Japan so GOOD?! Obesity is so rare in Japan, and it is dietary (not genetic. They love carbs. And have healthy portions. They also walk a lot... And you can truly see the beauty of humanity as you spend time in Japan. Let's not blame carbohydrates for the evils of our unhealthy culture. Because Japan is the land of carbs. There is a time for cheat meals. If your cheat meal is a double burger with fries and a frosty once a week, you're going to defeat all your efforts. But within reason, there is room for “Vitamin P.” Be a well-nourished woman. I don't want to be a stick. I don't want to be “skinny.” There are cultural pulls that tell us we have to be tiny people. But there is healthy fat, and healthy muscles that makes you a better, healthy more nourished woman. And we don't need to try for that unhealthy stereotype… nor should we. Let's embrace true health. Let's embrace being highly nourished. Join Pearl and Serene on the Trim Healthy Podcast (a.k.a. “The Poddy”).  did a most downloaded episode I believe for year 2, an everyone seemed to really enjoy it including me. So we're doing it again as a year 3 episode!  As with the last compilation I made, these are not necessarily my favorite episodes of the year: They are the most downloaded of the year. I think the top 3 even broke download records, so it's clear that people enjoyed them.  This is a great way to peruse topics you may have otherwise overlooked or ignored, or great starting points if you're new to the show.  I'm also super proud to say that this has been a massive year of growth with numbers doubling and tripling in most cases, along with an astounding 160 country reach and numerous top rankings in multiple countries and on several platforms.    Starting us off at number 10 is: Bad Bosses with Jennifer Nash. We originally arranged this interview to talk about good bosses, but you all in the audience quickly decided you wanted it to be about the worst of the worst, and what's wrong with them. I'll also throw in a little (static) so you know there's a clean little cut in the audio segments.   I can see why people found that episode a bit cathartic, but it was followed up with an interview that had most people concerned at the beginning. It was a reply to a tech specialist, done and voiced entirely by AI. At #9: The AI Reply with ChatGPT and ElevenLabs    The speaking ability of computer entities quickly found its way deeper into the minds of the audience; as we dove into the human speaking ability in #8 Polyglot Means Multilingual with Joel Dubin    But with these new languages, how were we going to find the money to travel to all these wonderful places? That's where we get #7: Becoming Wealthy with Bryan Kuderna    Needless to say: All these new skills left us all a bit stressed out. Luckily, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder came in to save the day at #6: OCD with Chris Mason    That puts OCD into perspective, but what about the ever increasing need to know about Autism? For this we turn to #5: Life with Autism with Sam Mitchell    Autism can be an isolating experience, and #4 highlighted that all of life can be lonely if done wrong. This is: Loneliness with Shila Patel   Okay… So we don't want to be lonely, right? Then why not find someone or something we cannot live without? Turns out that leads us to #3: Codependency with Dr. Sarah Michaud    Alright! So we can't be lonely, AND we can't be codependent… Is there anything else to look out for, Colton? Yes, there is, my lovely audience member; it's #2: Narcissistic Personality Disorder with Danu Morrigan    Wow… with such a heavy list, surely the number one must have been an all encompassing downer, right?  No! In fact, #1 was almost exclusively uplifting: Providing valuable insights to how you can find passion and purpose in your life right now! It's Vitamin P with Corey Poirier    Listener questions?: “Do you plan to focus on any topics more in the future?” -Mikah   Rocky asks, "You had a recent announcement about a medical situation. Can you tell us more?"   “How's listenership?” - Deborah    “Did something happen to make you happier?” - Odila Favorite Reviews or Emails:  “Dear JDE podcast,  Thank you for releasing such unique and fascinating content. Not being largely into podcasts, I find myself oddly intrigued with what the next episode will dive into.  Just a few weeks ago I listened to one where you had a sports related guest, they mentioned how physical activity such as running helps the mind from overthinking. Because you're so physically exhausted, you can't think deep enough to get overwhelmed in the moment. Being the fool I am. I translated this to intensely jogging on a break later that night to the point of being uncomfortable. Later, a co-worker was kind enough to invite me on their evening strolls and that was a much more enjoyable distraction.  Sincerely, another dumb fan.”    “Hello! Huge fan of the show, just wanted to send some. Compliments your way. Live, laugh, love babes! Cheers!” - Leo Velour    I love hearing from listeners, even if it's just for them to say hey or share a moment.    Now for just a little ego boost, let's look at some public reviews of the show:  “I love this podcast. I always learn something. I've been listening for some time now and was fortunate to be a guest last year. Keep up the good work, Colton.” - Dr. Robin Hall    “Colton Petry's Just dumb enough. Podcast is, of course, quite smart. All of his shows and guests are wide-ranging and equally fascinating. I find most shows with an international following such as this one. Are the ones to stalk. This one's a keeper.” -Best Things Ever    “Colton ain't no dummy, He's a masterful interviewer who creates the best conversations that you just don't want to end.” - Jodi  Top 10 Countries:  United States, led by New York, Oregon, California, Texas, and Illinois.  England and Scotland of the United Kingdom.  Australia's own New South Wales and Victoria.  Canada, with Ontario and British Columbia out front.  Ghana, making a huge statement as a regular top 5 this year!  New Zealand  Ireland  Germany  South Africa  India    All 10 has routine time in the top of their charts, there was only about a 2% difference between #6 and #10, and #11 was even closer.    Thank you all again for hanging out with me and my wonderfully dumb show for another year. I hope to have even more fun topics and wild knowledge for you in Year 4!  That's it for this week! In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Jeffrey Bland, the father of functional medicine, to explore the profound impact of bioflavonoids on health. We delve into the historical significance, antioxidant properties, and gene-regulating capabilities of flavonoids. Dr. Bland highlights the role of these nutrients in promoting longevity and immune resilience. Our discussion also covers revolutionary insights into GLP-1 agonists and the benefits of Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat. This episode offers valuable information on how flavonoid-rich foods can fundamentally enhance well-being and immune function. Key Takeaways: Historical Significance: Bioflavonoids, originally termed Vitamin P, play a vital role in preventing diseases like scurvy and have been part of human diets for centuries. Antioxidant Properties: These compounds serve as powerful antioxidants, quenching damaging free radicals and reducing biological aging. Epigenetic Influence: Bioflavonoids regulate gene expression, impacting immune responses and metabolic processes, which is critical for longevity and disease prevention. GLP-1 Agonist: Foods rich in flavonoids stimulate GLP-1 production, influencing appetite regulation and metabolic health, paralleling the effects of popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic. Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat: HTB is highlighted for its extraordinary immune-enhancing properties, high flavonoid content, and its role in regenerative agriculture.   More of Dr. Jeffrey Bland: Dr. Jeffrey Bland is a personable and highly respected thought leader who has spent more than five decades focused on the improvement of human health. He is known worldwide as the founder of the Functional Medicine movement, which represents his vision for a care model that is grounded in systems biology and informed by research that he has a unique ability to synthesize. His pioneering work has created the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute, as well as the Institute for Functional Medicine, the global leader in Functional Medicine education. Since 1991, hundreds of thousands of healthcare practitioners have participated in PLMI and IFM programs, and this collective knowledge has positively impacted the lives of patients all over the world. Dr. Bland began his career as a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Puget Sound. He is a natural educator and became involved with numerous academic institutions during the years he spent teaching. This includes the significant contributions he made to the founding of Bastyr University, the first federally accredited university offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in natural medicine in the US. In the early 1980s, Dr. Bland was hand-selected by two-time Nobel Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling to serve as Director of Nutritional Research at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine. Dr. Bland is the author of best-selling books and over 120 peer-reviewed research publications. He speaks extensively, and his engaging style makes him popular with both professional and consumer audiences. Dr. Bland's latest project is Big Bold Health, where he's on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature's greatest innovations—the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Dr. Bland is advocating for the power of immuno-rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level. It's an ambitious and purpose-driven effort that encompasses his active stance on regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and planetary health. We keep the Mother’s Day celebration going with two of the up-and-coming broc-stars, The Plant-Based Juniors, Whitney English and Alexandra Caspero. Together, these two have created a robust community and a haven of support for raising healthy plant-strong babies and toddlers.  In fact, their new book, The Plant-Based Baby and Toddler is coming out on May 18th, 2021 and it is the topic of much of the discussion in today’s episode. The PBJs are packed with knowledge, research, and enthusiasm for providing such accurate and evidence-based information because, as we know, there is just so much misinformation out there. They cut through the noise with a refreshing and welcoming vibe that we love here at PlantStrong. Both Alex and Whitney are Registered Dietitians, Certified Personal Trainers, and Moms to toddlers, so they are, of course, personally invested in the health of not just your children, but theirs as well.  Even if you’re not a parent, we encourage you to share this episode with those who are. They are a wonderful source for encouragement and affirmation that shines a light on the fact that raising plant-based babies and toddlers is not only safe, but it’s also health-promoting.  We cover so many issues that new parents face, especially the many fears and misconceptions of raising plant-strong babies. We also talk about how to have productive conversations with your children and with the naysayers who express their concerns about your parenting choices. We dive into soy, gluten, the whole grain paradox...and making sure your child gets plenty of Vitamin P. What in the world is Vitamin P? You’ll find out and, believe us, you don’t want to live without it. This week on The Health Made Simple Show, Dr. Bart Precourt discusses masks, the current global pandemic, and more.   Learn about the immune system alliance and the superhuman strategies to help gear up our bodies so theyre ready for whatever comes towards us.   Read below to discover 5 ways to protect your immune system and keep an eye out for our 20% off special on our immune system packages.   1. Let's Talk About Face Masks Do they work? How do they help? Think of it like this…if I throw a bucket of water at your face and you have a mask on, you're going to be a little drier than if you didn't have a mask on. Is there protection from these masks, yes absolutely! Does it protect you from everything–no. Let me challenge you in this, at my office when a client comes in with a mask on I put mine on as well. For me it is about respecting that person. I encourage you to take both opposing sides of the argument and simply land in the middle with respecting others choices. 2. Fear of the Unknown The reason that we have been put in this uncomfortable place is fear of the unknown. It all started with a super high proposed mortality rate. We're not afraid of getting a cough or a fever, we're afraid of dying. So when those proposed mortality rates were released, the fear began to set in. The reason we started social distancing and the reason masks and gloves were implemented was not to stop the virus entirely, but rather to flatten the curve and extended the period of time that people were going to get this virus and in turn, decrease fatalities from the virus. 3. SuperHuman Strategies If we prepare ourselves to be super human with superhuman strategies, we start to think in ways of building our bodies up so they're ready for whatever comes towards us. Thats the strategy moving forward.   4. Immune System Alliance The microbiome in your gut is a big part of your immune system. Let's call it the “immune Alliance.” Did you know theres actually not a “immune system?” Theres an endocrine system that is made up of glands like your adrenal glands, thyroid etc. Theres other systems that are definable, but the immune system is made up of an alliance. The better that your bodies systems work together, the more protected you are from viruses Did you know your bones are part of your immune system? Your long bones is what houses your bone marrow where we make red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout your body. This is critical. We are dealing with a virus that has an oxygen issue on a cellular level. So if we do not have strong red blood cells we wont be able to defend ourselves from a virus that deprives the host from oxygen. The alliance also includes your thymus gland, which is what creates T-Cells and produces white blood cells. Also your lungs which holds oxygen in your body and even your spleen.  Did you know that your spleen is where antibodies are made in your body? Your hands are a big part of this system as well. Ever since we were kids we touch things and we get sick. The microbiome instantly neutralizes these viruses or bacterias and then started the process with the white blood cells to create antibodies, helping to keep us healthy. Using hand sanitizer can actually start to kill off our natural bacteria in our hands. This makes us often MORE susceptible to viruses.   5. 5 Ways to Protect Your Immune System 1. Sleep We heal when we sleep. Your T-Cells and natural killer cells go hunting at night to kill harmful viruses in your body. This is why sleep is so important. 2. Diet How your diet affects your immune alliance. Sugar causes the most oxidative stressors, while alcohol can put your immune system. 3. Movement Even a 30 minute walk can boost your immune system. Movement helps produce red blood cells, and helps you fight off viruses. Movement is not exercise. That is something humans made up because we don't move enough. This should be a natural thing just get up and go and get your body moving. 4. Supplements We've always heard vitamin c is good for the immune alliance. Asorcbic acid is what you'll find at the local grocery store but it is not giving you the full spectrum of the Vitamin C complex. You need a full spectrum of Vitamin P and Vitamin J that all work together to help fight viruses and bacteria. There are always good quality and bad quality supplements, look for reputable brands that include full complex's like I spoke of above. Vitamin D is another great supplement as well as Zinc. By taking supplements we are trying to give our body the tools to do what it's made to do. Heres a link to some immune packages I put together for you: https://drbart.clickfunnels.com/sales-pageomv2u0tp 5. Mindest Who do you need to be to move forward? You don't need to be the one trying to rip someone on facebook. We need to be getting back to our roots and smiling and loving people and helping each other through this pandemic.   -- Register for the Health Made Simple Show If you are interested in registering for the Health Made Simple Show please visit http://www.healthmadesimple.com

Nurse practitioner Cindy and nurse practitioner Lisa Vasile discuss why they both moved to a functional approach to care for their patients. Using a comprehensive approach, offering education, and providing nutritional support can improve many symptoms that have not been resolved with a conventional approach. It is all too often that both these practitioners see patients after they have gone to several providers previously without getting answers to their health issues. "Vitamin P" is one of the key "nutrients" for brain health, mental health, and being pain free. We so often overlook the important role that it plays in our overall health and while some attention is paid to it, it is most often relegated to an afterthought in our healthcare system. For health's sake, make sure you aren't deficient.

Episode #26 A Brief Primer On Vitamins, And Where To Find Them in Food   ·        Vitamins were discovered in the early 1900s’ and began the era of modern interest in diet and nutrition. ·        Early chemists found that certain “unknown substances” in foods were essential to life. ·        Vitamins such as vitamin D and B were necessary to prevent diseases such as rickets, beriberi, and pellagra and that vitamin C, a factor present in many fresh foods, prevented scurvy.   Why we need vitamins: ·         Consumption of sugar, refined flour and hydrogenated fats, and of alcohol, tobacco, and many drugs, depletes the body of nutrients, resulting in higher vitamin and mineral requirements for users.   ·        Stress of any sort (food, chemical, emotional, physical, etc) causes the body to use up available nutrients at a faster than normal rate.   ·        Food science is much more complicated and nuanced than we first imagined- it is an ongoing and emerging field (even after 100 years!)   ·        US RDA has set minimum daily requirements for a frew vitamins and minerals, but for the vast majority of people, the minimum requirements might support average health while individual needs keep folks taking the minimum RDA from optimal health.   ·        Athletes need more - sometimes vastly more.   ·        ·        Vitamin A – Vitamin A is needed so that certain nutrients, including protein, minerals, and water-soluble vitamins, can be utilized by the body and also helps protect the body against unwanted pollutants by acting as an antioxidant. The proper consumption of Vitamin A can lead help improve bone structure, wide handsome faces with plenty of room for the teeth, and ample protection against stress of all types.   ·        Vitamin B – Vitamin helps promote healthy nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, muscle tone, and cardiovascular function. This vitamin can also help fight against mental disorders, depression and anxiety. Vitamin B can be found in a variety of foods including whole grains, fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, seafood, and organ meats. Vitamin B is also important because it helps in the process of cell metabolism and cholesterol production.   ·        Vitamin C – While Vitamin C is mostly popularly known as a vitamin used to treat a common cold, it also aids in tissue growth and repair, strength of capillary walls, lactation, and adrenal gland function. It helps wounds heal more quickly and, similarly to Vitamin A, is an important antioxidant.   ·        Vitamin D – Vitamin D helps build strong bones, healthy teeth, and allows for normal growth as it helps encourage calcium and phosphorus absorption, which are both essential for building strength. Vitamin D has also helped fight against cancer and multiple sclerosis. While spending time in the sun can help your body absorb Vitamin D, you can also find this vitamin in butterfat, eggs, liver, organ meats, marine oils, and seafood, specifically shrimp and crab.   ·        Vitamin E – Vitamin E has been shown to help slow down the aging process, aid in circulation, tissue repair, and healing, and also strengthen the treatment of fibrocystic conditions, sterility, PMS, and muscular dystrophy. Vitamin E can be found in unrefined vegetables oils, butter, organ meats, grain, nuts, seeds, legumes, and dark leafy vegetables.   ·        Vitamin K – Vitamin K is found in liver, egg yolks, butter, grains, dark leafy vegetables, vegetables of the cabbage family, and fermented soy foods like miso. It is needed for blood clotting, is vital for the process of bone formation, and helps postmenopausal women to prevent bone loss.   ·        Vitamin P – Vitamin P supports Vitamin C and allows for it to be absorbed more quickly which in turn helps promote healing and protect the structure of blood capillaries. It also helps stimulate bile production, lower cholesterol levels, regulate menstrual flow, help prevent cataracts, and have antibacterial effects. Vitamin P can be found in foods including peppers, grapes, buckwheat, and the white peel of citrus fruits.   ·        CoQ10 – CoQ10 is vital for the process of producing energy and can also be used as an antioxidant.  It has been known to help treat cardiovascular disease and periodontal problems and it can be found in all animal products, specifically heart meat.   ·        Activator X – Activator X can be found in organ meats, fish, shellfish, fish eggs, and butter from grass fed cows.     Source: Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon
