Happy, happy Sunday! We are really in the thicket of summer now, y'all. We invited our friends Rent For Cheryl to the LG Studio to catch up since our first interview with them back in 2021 on the LoCLE Grown Marathon on 88.3 The Sting.Rent for Cheryl is a passionate band with members who have diverse musical styles, and when they come together on stage, they bless your ears with a fusion of jazz, rock, blues, pop - whatever the vibe calls for - they match and exceed. In this episode, we get a very rare acoustic performance from them at the end, but not before we discuss writing songs vs free styling, the amazing Rialto theatre, and the indisputable fact that DRAGONFLY IS AN OXYMORON??? From Akron, OH, Rent for Cheryl has been migrating more into the Cleveland sector with an upcoming performance next month at The Beachland Ballroom and will be releasing three singles leading up to this show at the end of August. This one hit closer to home than usual for us as we have all seen each other grow our passions (one might even say...LoCLE Grown), and it was an absolute honor to be able to sit at the table again and not only talk music but hear what they have been cooking up lately. For the latest and greatest with this band, follow Rent for Cheryl on Instagram, and be sure to keep an eye out for the next three singles coming your way this summer! Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. Brought to you by The Publicity Works Agency specializing in authors & musicians We shine only when We make you shine! Call us today at 941-567-6193 At a time when most female artists were content with crooning sappy love songs for mainstream audiences, vocalist and pianist Linda Gail Lewis was following her own muse, singing rowdy and rousing versions of early rock classics like “C.C. Rider,” “Jim Dandy” and “Baby (You've Got What It Takes).” The latter track might hint at what drove Lewis to blaze her own musical path as it is a duet with Lewis's brother, well-known raconteur and rabble rouser Jerry Lee Lewis. Lewis would go on to record several times with her brother but also branched out to record several solo albums throughout the years as well as a 2000 album with Van Morrison and, more recently, has appeared on albums by Robert Gordon and Ann-Margret!   But it's Gail's early tracks that truly showcase her historic importance as a pioneer of rockabilly music, and these tracks have now been collected on a brand-new compilation, entitled Early Sides 1963-1973, giving fans of vintage rock and rockabilly a chance to discover her unique talents. The audio has been completely remastered by guitar icon Danny B. Harvey who had this to say about the collection “It's a well-known fact that from 1961 until the late ‘70s, Linda Gail Lewis sang and stood beside her big brother Jerry Lee Lewis, both onstage and in the studio. Not as well-known is during that time she also managed to record her own amazing solo singles in Memphis, Nashville and LA with legendary musicians & producers like Scotty Moore, Jerry Reed, Harold Bradley, Reggie Young & of course her brother backing her.” Please welcome American singer, songwriter, pianist, author and Sister of Rock & Roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis…  LINDA GAIL LEWIS to Interviewing the Legends PURCHASE EARLY SIDES 1963-1973 BY LINDA GAIL LEWIS AT AMAZON.COM Vintage early recordings from a true pioneering female rock artist, and sister of Jerry Lee Lewis, Linda Gail Lewis! These early singles represent a diverse mix of musical styles from rockabilly to country to good old-fashioned Rock 'n' Roll! Includes two tracks with special guest Jerry Lee Lewis! Full color gatefold jacket with detailed personnel credits and vintage photos! ALSO WILD! WILD! WILD! Robbie Fulks & Linda Gail Lewis Also available at amazon.com   PURCHASE The Devil, Me, and Jerry Lee Released – October 28, 1998 by Linda Gail Lewis (Author) available at amazon.com "Jerry Lee is not a candy ass," writes Lewis in this affectionate memoir of her life with her brother, rock legend Jerry Lee Lewis. What she's saying is hardly news? given that Jerry Lee's nickname is "The Killer," he hardly needs such a defense? but the author writes in a vivid, colloquial voice that makes old news seem almost fresh. Though Lewis's book abounds with colorful boasts regarding the sturdy Lewis libido (apparently shared by Jerry Lee, the author and their cousin Jimmy Swaggart), fans will learn little they didn't already know about the man who graced the world with the hit "Great Balls of Fire." Lewis is charming when she describes her fits of wanderlust, as when she left her family to tour the country with her older brother and his band, but one wishes she had applied her talent for brisk, direct prose to telling the story of the balancing act she has had to perform as both a mother and a traveling musician (which she only briefly addresses). Lewis also pads her narrative with worn-out anecdotes, recalling the moment when John Lennon kissed Jerry Lee's feet and the performance in which an uninvited and unwanted Janis Joplin joined Jerry Lee onstage. Lewis's appealing, plainspoken style notwithstanding, this slim family album will be appreciated by diehard fans and quickly forgotten by everyone else.   FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT LINDA GAIL LEWIS VISIT www.lglmusic.com Official website https://lglmusic.bandcamp.com/ LGL Music Bandcamp www.facebook.com/lglmusic Facebook https://twitter.com/lglmusic Twitter www.instagram.com/explore/tags/lindagaillewis/?hl=en Instagram   LINDA GAIL LEWIS TOURING 2022 LGL live 7/29/2022 Dan's Silverleaf Denton, TX 8/12/2022 Lonesome Rose San Antonio, TX 8/13/2022 Continental Houston, TX 8/14/2022 TBA 8/16/2022 Rooster Blues House Oxford, Ms 8/17/2022 tba 8/18/2022 star bar atlanTa, ga 8/19/2022 tipsy burro saloon charlotte, nc 8/20/2022 Friday's Creek Owings, MD 8/21/2022 Buckley's Long Island, NY 8/23/2022 Cafe Nine New Haven, CT 8/25/2022 Dobbs Philadelphia, PA 8/26/2022 The Palace Theater Danbury, CT 8/27/2022 Lenny's at Hawkes Plaza Westbrook, ME 8/28/2022 Terryville Fairgrounds Plymouth, CT 8/30/2022 Beachland Ballroom & Tavern Cleaveland, OH 8/30/2022 souThgate house revival Newport, ky 9/01/2022 rock'n'roll cafe memphis, tn 9/04/2022 Antone's Austin, TX   LINDA GAIL LEWIS Discography Albums Year Album 1969 The Two Sides of Linda Gail Lewis Together (with Jerry Lee Lewis) 1990 International Affair 1991 Do You Know Rockin' With Linda – Recorded Live in London 1992 I'll Take Memphis 1995 Love Makes the Difference 1999 Linda Gail Lewis 2000 You Win Again (with Van Morrison) 2001 Rock 'n' Roll Special (with The Firebirds) 2002 Out of the Shadows Rock 'n' Roll 2004 Boogie Woogie Country Gal Lie and Deny 2005 Me and the Boys in the Band 2006 Rock, Roll & Remember Hungry Hill 2007 Dazed and Confused Jabalaya You Were There The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll Live in France 2010 You & Me & Sweet Rock 'n' Roll – Best from Sweden 2015 Heartbreak Highway Gas Station Flowers Hard Rockin' Woman 2018 Wild! Do you hear that thunder? That's the sound of strength in four 100-watt stacks. (Actually, one is a 200-watt bass tube head.) IDLES' guitarists Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan finally have the firepower to match their fury. (Original members singer/lyricist Joe Talbot, drummer Jon Beavis, and bassist Adam Devonshire fill out the band. Kiernan took over for guitarist Andy Stewart after 2015 EP Meat was released.) For much of the 2010s, the bashers from Bristol played on anything and plugged into everything. Low-budget imports and solid-state combos were what they had and they made that work. They toiled around the U.K. sharpening their sneering tongue, quickening their sting, and focusing their vision. Doing so meant playing small rooms as much as possible. So the need and access for big, potent, top-shelf gear was unnecessary. That volatile energy, sensible setups, and Sten-gun attack anchored both 2017's Brutalism and 2018's Joy as an Act of Resistance. The popularity in those releases opened doors to new tools and the time to explore fresh tones and approaches. When writing Ultra Mono, Bowen and Kiernan looked for sounds rather than riffs. “The noise-making had to be thought of from the start,” Bowen told PG in 2020. “We basically created a sound palette first, and once we created a sound, that sound informed the riffs.” And the most obnoxious sounds on Ultra Mono were intentional. “When we were writing this album, we'd go to random guitar shops and ask them for the weirdest pedals they had,” adds Kiernan. “It may sound useless, but it still might touch you somehow. Every now and then, a pedal that does something really weird will kick you into gear.” Using hip-hop beats as a North Star and often performing on their instruments as drummers, the duo unlocked a combination of heartless sounds for Ultra Mono that elevated Talbot's heartfelt (and challenging) lyrics. For the just-released Crawler, they continued exploring obtuse sounds. Some continued to be unusual to the masses and others were atypical for IDLES. “Car Crash” is a disjointed, cold-war-siren-sounding, brooding banger. Considering its brash, bizarrely brilliant predecessor, it's right in line. However, one track no one saw coming was “The Beachland Ballroom”—a bring-you-to-your knees soul song. The incessant brave exploration advances their brutal power, supports their menacing energy, and paints with broad colors to complement Talbot's biting commentary and tales of personal troubles. Touring ahead of 2021's Crawler (now available), IDLES' Mark Bowen and Lee Kiernan invited PG to Nashville's Cannery Ballroom for an extended gear chat before their sold-out show. Just ahead of soundcheck, Kiernan clarified his seemingly callous treatment of his Fenders, while Bowen establishes that his acrylic Electrical Guitar Company EG 500 is heavy to dance about onstage, but its “angry piano” sound makes it worth it. They explain why they need a collective of five pedalboards and 50+ stomps to cover guitar, bass, baritone, synth, inhuman sounds, and whatever they mean when they say “genk.” (In a 2020 interview with PG, Bowen described the term like this: “'Mr. Motivator' is a good example: Lee makes this ‘genk' noise that sounds like a hammer in a metal factory, and he plays that along with the drums, and that part really only occupies a frequency range around 1.2k to 2.3k—which is a large bandwidth, but it's where the transients of the drums and the cymbals sit. That part really pops in that space.” Also, Bowen and Kiernan created a YouTube show called Genks during the pandemic, which focuses on effects. (Even if you're a minimalist, it's worth a watch for the laughs.) Big thanks to IDLES tech Gavin Maxwell. Amy is a mother of two and a passionate full-time teacher who teaches adapted core curriculum at a charter school for kids with autism. Amy has recently had some pregnancy complications, which led to weeks in the hospital and the premature birth of her second son at 31 weeks. Amy has always gone over and beyond for all of her students. We are attempting to do the same to help her and her family during these trying times. What are Hope Hearts? Hope Hearts are small crocheted hearts ( designed by Amy) in which one stays with the infant at the NICU and the other stays with the parent, so that way both parent and child will always have a piece of each other even when they can't be together. Amy situation: Amy was admitted to the hospital at 29 weeks, on September 3rd, when she began leaking amniotic fluid due to a preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). During her hospital stay, Amy received antibiotics and steroids to help prevent infection and develop baby Liam's lungs. On September 21st, Liam Bruce Evans was born at 31 weeks and 6 days after a placental abruption. He weighed 4 lbs 15oz and was 17 in long. Liam has been lucky to have no serious complications from his premature birth. Due to his lungs being underdeveloped when he was born, he has been on and off cpap to give his lungs time to mature. He still experiences occasional apnea (periods of decreased heart rate and extended pauses in breathing) when breathing on his own. Right now he is working on gaining weight, breathing on his own full time, and drinking from a bottle instead of using a feeding tube so that he can go home. The money from this fundraiser will go to helping the family pay bills during Amy's extended maternity leave as well as child care for Liam until his immune system is ready for him to attend daycare Event Details In-person and Streamed   Monday, Nov 8th: Winchester $10 Cover Astral Radio 730-815 PM Cellophane Jane 830-915 PM Grav 930-1015 PM Band's Info https://www.facebook.com/thegrav https://www.facebook.com/cellophanejane/ https://www.facebook.com/astral.radioCLE Nov 9th Beachland Ballroom $10 Cover Eliy Orcko 8-830PM Jinari Kemet 830-9 PM Micheal McFarland 9-930PM Sparrow and The Lost Boys 930-10 PM Band's Info https://www.facebook.com/ImjustEliy https://www.facebook.com/jinarikemet/ https://www.facebook.com/MichaelMcFarlandMusic https://www.facebook.com/sparrowandthelostboys Nov 10th Coda $5 Cover Open Mic all acts welcome 7 PM Jul Big Green 830-9 PM Rubix Groove 1030-1115 PM Band's Info https://www.facebook.com/RubixGrooveMusic https://www.facebook.com/julbiggreen Nov 11th Beachland Tavern $10 cover Lea Marra and the Dream Catchers 8-830 PM Sha Bang 830-9 PM Meg and The Magnetosphere 9-930PM Myth and Company 930-10 PM Band's Info https://www.facebook.com/Lea-Marra https://www.instagram.com/shabangcle/ https://www.facebook.com/megnetosphere https://www.facebook.com/MythandCompany/ Nov 12th B side Lounge Cover $10 Uncle Gnarly 8-840PM FatBack Mango 840-920PM Aj & The Woods 920-10PM Band's Info https://www.facebook.com/Unclegnarly/ https://www.facebook.com/fatbackmango https://www.facebook.com/AJandtheWoods Nov 13th Winchester Cover $12 Celebration of the completion of Spring Fish a film made by local filmmaker Gabriel Xavier lowercase roses 8-845 Austin Stambaugh 850-935 C-level 944-1020 https://lowercaseroses.bandcamp.com/album/titanic-planet https://www.facebook.com/austinstambaughprofile https://www.facebook.com/clevel44

Baker Mayfield is relatively the same QB as Kirk Cousins in so many ways except he's not an anti-vaxxer and he's generally more likeable (and we say this because it's accurate and not because we hatin') The day regular season baseball was more important on a Sunday than the NFL Part 2 of 3 of the Podcast only content – The Idles band wrote a very cool song called "The Beachland Ballroom", and here's the inside story behind the track (begins around 1:19:00)  Lachlan MacKinnon's ‘Best of Edition' Let Me Tell You A Story: “The Three Hard No's” (begins around 1:31:00) Terrestrial: Hour 2 (begins around 1:37:00) The most popular Halloween candy in 2021 for each state is... Urban Meyer is a train wreck that keeps careening off the rails in new unexpected and exciting ways each and every week  A reminder that Kyrie and Bradley Beal aren't the only guys in the NBA who haven't received the vaccine, and how it's not right for a couple of black men to be receiving all the attention when there's at least 45 other players around the league who are just as irresponsible and selfish Part 3 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Mollie's Weekly Reports...  (begins around 2:38:00) Terrestrial: Hour 3 (begins around 3:02) A gentle farewell to Country Mollie's Weekly Reports, terrestrial edition!  All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: All terrestrial segments were recorded live on March 6th (Day 65 of 2021), and all podcast segments were recorded live on March 9th (Day 68 of 2021) Part 1 of 3 of the Podcast only content – The only thing proven to be worse than billionaires in this world is British Royalty, and yet no matter how many times over this fact is proven, people still care about it way too much. Plus, all praise the glorious display of the female nipple (and really hoping all the lizard brain dickholes out there don't ruin it for everyone) Terrestrial: Hour 1 (begins around 0:25:00) The NBA All-Star Weekend is easily criticized but when the players themselves want nothing to do with it you have to be even more critical over why they're even doing it in the first place. Approaching the trade deadline the Cavs are not only making clear the players they're willing to trade, but also who the core four players are going forward. And we couldn't be more happy that the Cavs core has grown to include four players. Recognizing something interesting that all 3 CLE teams have in common at the moment, which may be the first time ever that it's actually a thing. Part 2 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Texas University digs deep into the historical record of its "Eyes Of Texas" school song and finds out the song may not actually be racist after all, however, everyone who performed it at the school for over 60 years at the University (aka Texans) were definitely HUGE racists (begins around 1:22:00)  Lachlan MacKinnon’s ‘Best of Edition’ Let Me Tell You A Story: “Temple Of Doom” (begins around 1:34:00) Terrestrial: Hour 2 (begins around 1:38:00) The Beachland Ballroom turned 21 over the weekend and the fact that they're still around another year means CLE still being cool is also going to survive this pandemic. The Curious Case Of Baker Mayfield. 'Dick Pick Mick' and the problem with him being unfaithful is not the real story here, and the we really need to be focusing on the sexual harassment in the work place issues where this story broke in the first place. Part 3 of 3 of the Podcast only content – Mollie’s Weekly Reports...  (begins around 2:37:00) Terrestrial: Hour 3 (begins around 2:58)  With 'Coming To America 2' a new bar is set for film sequels no one ever asked for. Terrestrial: Hour 1 (begins around 0:26:00) Pavlov's Dawg and the NFL Draft, which with any luck won't end up as just another stupid and unnecessary super spreader event. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Cartoon childhoods all grown up, and the one last worst thing Dan Gilbert has left to accomplish this year as owner of the woeful Cavaliers (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) Literally killing some one on terrestrial radio is a joy, especially when it was a long overdue mercy killing. Now who can we kill next? It's okay to talk trash, and J.R. Smith is far and away my MVP for the 2018-2019 season. Any fan who is clamoring on about who the Browns will select in the draft is an idiot, and watching the NFL Combine, in so many very real and easy to understand ways, is officially far better than college football. This week the 5th season of one of the coolest things in Cleveland begins! And speaking of coolest things in Cleveland, we also reflect on this past weekend's huge 19th year anniversary celebration of the Beachland Ballroom (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:04:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story (Best Of Edition!): Lachlan MacKinnon’s “Cleveland's Angriest Door Guy” (begins at the 1:21:00 mark) So if Bryce Harper is worth 13 years and $330 million dollars, does that mean Francisco Lindor is worth almost twice that since he's been nearly twice as good as Harper over the last three seasons?  The real reason why we decided to start the show today by killing someone, and why we'll continue to do so going forward. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:59:00 mark) Last week we eviscerated all the bad films celebrated and awarded on the Oscars, but this week we acknowledge what is so unique and undeniably great about the Oscars. Makeup accessories, pinball is a sport, and 8,000 is more than 5,000... #JealousAsAMotherFucker (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:30:00 mark) The main reason why the vast majority of corporate music sucks so bad. Yes, we're looking directly at you Universal, Sony, and Warner, everything sounds the same and it's all bad. Step up your game! Having a local dish named after you because you sort of look like a popular TV actor is kind of fun. All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. Enjoy~ Check out Lachlan MacKinnon’s best selling book, ‘Let Me Tell You A Story: Small Stories Of A Large Family’! DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Finding a sequential calendar in our midst, and it's even got the equivalent of "The Diff", too! Game changer. (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) When Baker Mayfield goes off script he still says interesting and insightful shit, a quality as rare in professional athletes as finding a franchise QB for the Browns has been. The Cavs have done something we were beginning to think was impossible for them this year, looking like a half decent basketball team. Realizing you might have made a wrong turn in Albuquerque (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:08:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story: Lachlan MacKinnon’s “Bologna Summer” (begins at the 1:23:00 mark) The bad shopping mall experience of flying in this country, and what's the deal with "Christ Chicken"? Mollie’s PuhFooFuh Spotlight Part 10: The PuhFooFuh coin ridiculousness runs deep and wide, and social media is a weird thing so it's only right PuhFooFuh social media accounts are even weirder. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:04:00 mark) Seriously, what is the deal with "Christ Chicken"?! Mollie’s PuhFooFuh Spotlight Part 11: “Jimbo, aka Ding-A-Ling” (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:41:00 mark) "The Development": Explaining the base level background of villainy of Dan Gilbert, and also why all basketball related decisions he makes for the Cavs should be considered highly suspect. Hey, somebody not under his influence here has to point out the facts of this situation. "I'm Not Surprised By This" news of the week: OSU soundly beats Michigan and according to the way Gus Johnson called the game apparently it's cool to start hero worshiping Urban Meyer again. MLB is more profitable than it's ever been; explaining how the national ratings are down but paying for the rights to broadcast those games is only getting more and more expensive. Black Friday Death Count - A Defend Cleveland Show Thanksgiving tradition as great as the turkey parade and pumpkin pie. All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Not all sponsorship is created equal, celebrating 52 more episodes with Kidforce Pinball, and then wondering aloud if Nike might now be interested as well. (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) The Browns have been so bad that if you weren't laughing your ass off at them ending a 17 game losing streak with a tie, then you might just be mentally unhealthy and a danger to yourself and those around you. Figuring out too late that some topics might be very difficult to joke about, and when is it necessary for there to be an intervention when it comes to fan hobos? Just when you though their season was over, Mollie discovers one extra juicy item about the complete and utter zaniness of Minor League baseball. (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:28:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story: Lachlan MacKinnon’s “Little League Of Horrors” (begins at the 1:39:00 mark) The bad, the ugly, and then the good about your Cleveland Browns after Week 1. Did you know that Mike spits on Mollie's face and his saliva endows her with the power to peer into the future? True story.  The 4th Annual Cleveland Pinball And Arcade Show was a fantastic and fun time, and pondering what can be done to make competitive pinball just as fun and inviting. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:27:00 mark) Rotund offensive line coaches who loathe stretching and were last seen coaching a losing team in Canada can't be that good at what they do, right? Real questions Browns fans should be asking after seeing how offensively bad the offensive line looks. Two more reasons to truly hate the Pittsburgh Steelers, and their names. Mollie's PuhFooFuh Spotlight Part 1: Introducing us to the wonderful insanity of "Pinto Ron". (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 3:26:00 mark) Nike's campaign is incredibly good and it's nice to see a huge corporation standing up for the right side of history, now if only we can just get more people in this nation to do the same we might actually get to see this better tomorrow. We managed to stay on Show schedule through our move from Ohio to Texas, but the strenuous unpacking process was what finally got the best of us and put us behind by a week. We're catching up with reruns, this one being a great example of the Hours of Slack from the early 2000s that relied on plenty of ESO Swamp Radio (WCSB Cleveland by host Chas Smith, with Ivan Stang and Lonesome Cowboy Dave) and The Puzzling Evidence Show on KPFA Berkeley by host Puzzling Evidence and cohosts Dr. Hal and Dr. Philo Drummond. We had a lot more fresh collages coming in via Usenet in those days too, in this case by Rev. nu-monet and Jupiter Research. This episode features some clips from the Stang sermon with ESO live back-up at Winterstar Symposium, and the ESO song "Wilderness of "Bob"" performed live there. Winterstar was a smaller, indoor version of Starwood held by A.C.E. of Cleveland and it elicited great gut blowout. It ended because the excellent rural Ohio everything-goes resort folded. Today there is an annual Winterstar Ball held at The Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland until another anything-goes winter indoor resort can be found in Northern Ohio. If it happens we'll be there!
