Dr. Keith Jagger is a university chaplain, Dean of Christian Formation and Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at John Brown University — a private Christian university in Arkansas. Dr. Jagger provides leadership for the ongoing spiritual growth of the university community. He holds a masters degree in New Testament from Asbury Theological Seminary (which I mention so I can give Asbury a shout-out) a certificate in Formative Spirituality from Epiphany Academy (led by Dr. Susan Muto) and a PhD in Early Christianity from the University of St Andrews, where N.T. Wright was his advisor. We're talking with Dr. Jagger about Thomas Merton, the 20th century Trappist monk who lived as a resident of the Abbey of Gethsemane in Kentucky for 27 years and as a willing hermit for the final three years of his life.Thomas Merton was devoted to contemplative prayer and mysticism, always seeking a more direct, wordless communion with God. He wrestled with the Jesus prayer, which we'll explore in another episode, and with uncertainty and humility and trust. This is what led him to write what we now call Merton's Prayer of Unknowing, published in his book, Thoughts in Solitude.

In this episode of New Books Network, Željko Stanojević speaks with Dr. Hanna David about Erika Landau's Contribution to the History of Gifted Education: Family Characteristics of Gifted Children (Springer, 2025), a study of gifted education, family background, gender differences, educational opportunity, and the legacy of one of Israel's most influential pioneers in gifted education. Drawing on quantitative research on gifted children aged 5–15 who attended the Erika Landau Institute for Gifted and Creative Children and Youths in Tel Aviv between 1968 and 2003, David examines how giftedness is identified, how family characteristics shape educational trajectories, and how institutional practices affect boys and girls differently. The book focuses on parents' education, family size, birth order, siblings, admission examinations, and long-term patterns across several decades. A central part of the conversation concerns gender inequality in gifted education. David discusses the persistent imbalance between boys and girls identified as gifted and asks whether conventional testing procedures fully capture the abilities needed to thrive in gifted programs. The book addresses affirmative-action standards in admissions, noting that girls who may score lower on entrance examinations can demonstrate strengths in social skills, persistence, fine motor development, and successful integration within highly able peer groups. The conversation explores what is new in Levin's translation and commentary, how the Book of Chronicles reshapes the stories of David and Solomon, and why Jerusalem, the Temple, the priesthood, the Levites, geography, political memory, and the idea of “all Israel” are central to the Chronicler's message. The book offers a new English translation and detailed commentary on 1 Chronicles 10 through 2 Chronicles 9. It is part of a planned multi-volume commentary. It begins with the death of Saul and follows the Chronicler's account of David's rise to power, the establishment of Jerusalem, the transfer of the Ark, the divine promise concerning David's dynasty, preparations for the Temple, Solomon's accession, and the construction and dedication of the Jerusalem Temple. Levin shows that Chronicles does far more than repeat Samuel and Kings. The Chronicler selects, reorganises, expands, and omits earlier material to create a distinctive interpretation of Israel's past. David is presented above all as the king who prepares Jerusalem, worship, personnel, materials, and institutions for the future Temple, while Solomon completes that project by building and dedicating the Temple. The volume also examines priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers, officials, military groups, tribes, cities, territories, genealogies, and neighbouring peoples.
