Vitamin C seems to be entering all sorts of skincare arenas, including body care. But is Vitamin C actually helpful in the category? Let's take a look at a couple products to understand what's really going on here.
Have you wondered if your body needs a skincare routine too? You're definitely not the only one. Despite this arena getting a lot of attention, there isn't a ton of research or data to go off of. Instead, let's go through a few common body products that would have some sort of testing behind them..and no it's definitely not caffeine.
Funlayo Alabi, CEO and Co-Founder of Shea Radiance, wants to see women win. The founder, who was born in Manchester, England, and raised in Nigeria, moved to the United States at 17 to attend college. But she brought with her a strong sense of beauty implanted in her growing up in Nigeria, which included gleaming skin. After realizing that following in her father's footsteps by studying accounting, she settled on international business. And ended up with a career in coding and software by happenstance. Funlayo and her husband knew they wanted to create a business that allowed them to access resources on the African continent but little did they know that their search for a solution to treat their son's eczema and find an effective body moisturizer led them to explore shea. After mixing up products in their kitchen, their local Farmer's Market became their testing ground, and they refined their formulas from there. The duo also traveled to Nigeria to connect with the women who were harvesting shea, eventually traveling to and supporting women in several countries and banding with a few others as founding members of the Global Shea Alliance. Funlayo shares her thoughts on ashiness, why shea has gotten a bad rap, and how she got her brand into Whole Foods and took it from a local to a global offering with the retailer. In addition, she shares how the brand's first foray into a big box retailer didn't work out and what she learned from it.

Dark Rum. Cannabis. Peppermint. No, not the remnants of a hotel room Hunter S. Thompson just checked out of — these are some of the Hall of Fame scents slung by the chic and minimalist lifestyle brand Malin + Goetz. Peek into any shower in a 1BR in Chelsea and chances are you've seen a bottle of Malin + Goetz body products. Chances are you and your S.O. have fought over and then shared said body products, replenishing in equal measure, to keep the bottle count low and the suds plentiful. We talk to the eponymous founders about how and why they created a simple, elegant, and functional solution to bathroom clutter while elevating the entire concept of putting stuff on your body at all with the most invigorating and memorable scents. Before joining Sephora, Sol de Janeiro's premium body products had another retailer stumped. "They said, 'You know, we don't know what to do with you guys,' recalled Heela Yang, one of the company's three founders and its CEO, on the Glossy Beauty Podcast. The company's butt cream, foot cream and body hair lightener put them apart from brands in beauty. "And then she said, 'You know, I think Sephora might be really into you guys.' And she was right." Yang founded the company with Camila Pierotti and Marc Capra in 2015. It partnered with Sephora the following year, going into stores nationwide weeks after its Bum Bum Cream for the derrière and its foot cream performed well on Sephora's site. A few years ago, Yang said, it was unclear whether the market for upscale products for the body was even sustainable. "If we had made a decision based on the size of the premium body care category back then, we probably wouldn't have launched this brand," she said. According to Yang, the company started with the idea of sharing Brazil's inclusive beauty culture before it started a product line. Yang lived in Brazil for a time (as did Capra), and Pierotti is from Rio de Janeiro. "There is something that starts in the beach culture of Rio -- that beauty is not any sort of universal standard to achieve, it is a feeling. Feeling comfortable in your own skin and feeling happy in your own skin. Brazilians love taking care of their bodies," said Pierotti. In the months since the Covid-19 pandemic went global, Sol de Janeiro has pivoted from in-person promotion of its products and events to a DTC-focused model. Its first fragrance, launched in mid-March just as the world came to a halt, had to be quickly shipped back from Sephora stores to fulfill online orders. But, the company's digital business is three times what it was last year, Yang said, and now makes up almost half of its total business.

How and why Beauty by Earth was started. Prudence and her partner wanted to start a product line that is clean and affordable. She has a child that needed these clean products and she wanted all people to be able to afford these amazing products. One product can take 2-3 years to bring to market. Prudence thought she was using safe products but was disappointed to find out not all her products were safe. Labels do not tell you everything you need to know. Marketing can confuse us. All natural doesn’t mean it is safe. Sulfate and paraben free is a great start but there are other ingredients that are not safe. The top three things Prudence says to look out for when choosing a product. It was hard for her to just pick three things but the three she shared were parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances. Be aware of the word fragrance on the bottle. Fragrance is toxic and can contain many harmful products. Beauty by Earth sticks to essential oils and fruit and plant extracts only for their fragrances. Companies that have products with “fragrance” in them sometimes don't even know what is truly in that word “fragrance” because it is proprietary to the formulator who created that smell. Simple essential oils smell great and are safe. Anna Marie shares the product that got her hooked on Beauty by Earth products.... The Self Tanner. It actually works and smells great. The other product is the deodorant. Let’s talk deodorant. This is a great product to change out and go 100% clean with. Aluminum is in many deodorants and can get into our breast tissue and lymph nodes. Be aware and men can use this. Be aware of “antiperspirant.” Your body naturally detoxes out of the skin and armpits. We do not want to disrupt this. Switching to clean products can cause a detox effect with the body (which is natural) and a rash and other things happening should not scare you away. Using a mud mask under your armpits can help speed up the detox impact. Give your body time to get back into homeostasis. Give these products some time - they work. Prudences non-negotiable when it comes to her health. Most of her life she has been aware of natural products. “What goes on and what goes in,” she says are very important. She encourages using a natural health practitioner and getting tests to see what it is your body needs. Also, she added to move your body and eat healthy foods. Her practices are all about her living a quality life. Being healthy is simple. Drink clean water, eat healthy foods, move your body. How does Prudence protect her brain health? And keep herself from going crazy with knowing what she knows. She tries not to buy packaged foods, fried foods, refined sugars. She also makes sure she has clean products all around. Don’t buy what is not healthy. Keep your skin clean and hydrated. You don’t need a million products. Don’t put junk on your face and just because something costs a lot doesn't mean it's healthy nor that it works better. It comes down to marketing. Cleaner is not necessarily more expensive. Keep it simple! Beauty by Earth is serving a higher purpose. In 2020 Beauty by Earth is going to be shooting more videos and sharing information about products to educate their customers. It is important for them to share - why! Today, my first guest is Artist, Lynn Herring, who was born in Chicago but moved to New York in her 20's to pursue a career as an advertising art director and to develop her studio practice. While in NY, she studied at the School of Visual Arts graduating with honors in 2008 with a BFA in Sculpture. Lynn eventually found her way upstate and recently completed her MFA studies in sculpture and printmaking at SUNY New Paltz where she graduated with honors while developing a new body of work designed to bring people together with art. This body of work is a reengineered Tic Tac Toe game designed to “Make America Relate Again.” Created with organic crooked-shaped, brightly-colored wood Xs and Os and using a more complicated wonky-shaped game board, Herring's game, XOX! Share the Love®, is an art object used to help many different kinds of people to connect for a playful and sane moment in this time of cultural and political toxicity. She's participating in this weekend's O+ Festival where you can play XOX! Share the Love Friday from 6-8pm, Saturday from 12-6pm and Sunday from 12-4pm at Gallery Fifty5, 55 Greenkill Avenue in Kingston, NY.Lynn and I get to talk about how one goes about making a board game, how she balanced work and school and why she made the leap to follow her passion, downsize and keep making art. Much of her work is very female centric so she shares the inspiration for her work and how it was important for her to follow her art creation versus procreation. She even put a raw egg in her mouth to make her point for one past performance. She's focused on living life authentically and for that I am grateful for her example!Today's second guest is Jenny Mulak who after much soul searching left her big corporate gig and moved to the Catskills to create Juniper Grove, a retreat space on her sacred land designed for healers, artists, lovers, musicians, writers, yogis, seekers and creatives of all kinds. Speaking of she also has her very own organic and vegan body product line "Jenifer Juniper" that she's bringing to next weekend's Hudson Valley Vegfest. We get to chat about how she finally made the big leap, the ups and down, really mostly ups, of building her dream retreat space, how and why she makes her Jenifer Juniper products and how and why she became a Vegan. Her online store will be coming soon so stay tuned, but meanwhile locals can check her out and also support past guest Rebecca Moore, founder of Vegfest next weekend, October 19th and 20th at BSP in Kingston, NY.Come check me out at O+ this weekend performing with past guest, Aki Goto Saturday evening at 6pm at Litebrite Neon and then Sunday, co-facilitating a Healing Ring of Tantra with past guest Nidhi Adhiya-Huba. All this makes you want to move to the Hudson Valley, huh? Small business owners fascinate me. Why? Because of their courage. Or what I perceive as courage. Who knows, maybe some are faint of heart. But I doubt that. Why? Because when anyone ventures to go against the grain of employee-dom (did I just make up a word?) there’s a risk of failure. Yes, there’s a risk with being an employee, but in my mind, it seems the risk is greater for business owners. If you get fired from your job you can blame your wack boss...your fellow employees who are trying to do you in (whether that’s perceived or real or downright wrong). But who you ‘gon’ blame if your business flops—absent environmental disasters, floods or other things out of your control? Seems that losing a business would be a hit to the spirit...so hard you’d need to duct tape and air pump your poor spirit daily just to get out of bed in the morning. That’s why small biz owners fascinate me. They’re willing to confront that risk every-durn-day. They all fascinate me…. Especially the ones who make products to keep our skin away from the throes of crust-ashiness. Meet Ayanna Alexander of Sixahwe Naturals. https://www.sixahwenaturals.com Learn about the origin of the company name, why they decided to go into business, and an important lesson she learned about maintaining passion for what you love to do. http://planetnoun.com/episode-8-sixahwe-naturals/
What you put on your skin or in your home is just as important as what you put in your body. Your skin absorbs many of the toxins and chemicals in the common body products we use, which can have harmful affects in our body. We welcome Sonia Chhinji, Co-Founder of Woodlot, a company that creates all natural, home and body products, that not only promote wellness in humans but are also environmentally sustainable. We discuss how certain ingredients affect our health, what ingredients and products to stay away from, how to determine if a product is good for you and so much more! Today we’re going to be talking about natural beauty and body products. This topic has become increasingly popular, and since what we use on our bodies impacts our health, I thought it would be great to make this topic an episode. We’re chatting with Megan Roosevelt, who’s a registered dietitian and the founder of Healthy Grocery Girl. I came across Megan on the interwebs, and saw that she had written a few pieces on naturalizing your beauty pantry. I absolutely love her site, articles, and recipes, and so it’s such a treat to have her chat with us about this topic today! Radio show host- Nancy Addison talks with Liz Smith about what you put on your skin goes directly to your bloodstream and every organ in your body in less than a minute. It bypasses your protective systems of the liver and kidneys, making the chemicals that are on your skin more dangerous than what you put in your mouth. The UK bans more than 1400 chemicals from skincare products. The US only bans 8 chemicals. https://us.nyrorganic.com/shop/NancyAddison/area/shop-online/category/what-s-new/This show is broadcast live on W4CY Radio – (www.w4cy.com) part of Talk 4 Radio (http://www.talk4radio.com/) on the Talk 4 Media Network (http://www.talk4media.com/).
