Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Just in case you're thinking about joining that incredible business opportunity selling a life changing product…don't give them your credit card info until you've listened to this A Little Bit Culty remix. We've put together a special Anti-MLM 101 Starter Kit episode with some of our favorite crusaders in the war on schemes, scams, and other internet flim-flams especially for you. Our upline on this one is pretty solid. We dug into our archives and Roberta Blevins came out swinging, so a segment from our Season 2 episode with the LuLa Rich fan fave is at the top of the batting list. She chats with us about the dangers of moldy leggings, #bossbabe energy, pricey sea cruises, other MLM tomfoolery. After Roberta, we move on to a clip from our more recent episode with Emily Lynn Paulson, an author and mother who believes that all MLMs—which form a $180 billion industry—are cults. Spoiler alert: We violently agree. And last but not least, we go all the way back to our Season 1 chat with Douglas Brooks, an attorney and MLM-buster with insights on what it takes to seek justice for people who've been screwed over. Take heart: When prosperity gospel grifters write big checks that their sneaky asses can't cash, there can be legal consequences. NOTES: Roberta Blevins was a Trainer with LuLaRoe, had a team of 75 women under her, and made over $65,000 in bonuses alone. But when she came to the conclusion that it was a rigged, losing game she didn't just leave the business: she testified in the Washington State vs. LuLaRoe Pyramid Scheme lawsuit as a witness for the state. Since leaving MLM, the fan favorite from the LuLaRich series has educated herself on the systemic structure of the business model, the psychological manipulation, the seedy underbelly and governmental ties, the cult indoctrination, and the history of Multi Level Marketing. She educates daily on TikTok, and podcasts in her "free time" on her own podcast, Life After MLM, which explores the dangers of Multi Level Marketing through the eyes of the victims and survivors. Her work has been featured on Amazon Prime Video, Vice Media, Bloomberg News, Split, and Business Insider among others. Learn more on her website or find her on Instagram @therealrobertablevins Emily Lynn Paulson is the author of Highlight Real: Finding Honesty and Recovery Beyond the Filtered Life, and Hey, Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing. She has given two powerful TEDx talks, both challenging the status quo of parenting, alcohol use, and feminism as we know it. Paulson has also been featured in major publications such as the Today Show, New York Times, Washington Post, The Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune, Next Question with Katie Couric, and the Tamron Hall Show. About the book: "This is the story of my apprenticeships with Japanese masters to build five unique and endangered traditional boats. It is part ethnography, part instruction, and part my personal reflections on preserving a craft tradition on the brink of extinction. Over the course of 17 trips to Japan, I have travelled over 30,000 miles to seek out and interview Japan's elderly master boat builders; I built boats with five of them, all in their seventies and eighties, between 1996 and 2010. For most of them, I was their sole and last apprentice." Stress is a presence that we cannot deny in our lives. We will find some evidence of it every day. Professor Douglas Brooks says that it's up to us to rise to the challenge of stress and in so doing, head it off before it turns into burnout. Stress, says Professor Brooks, is a natural and important feature of our human constitution. He recommends resources and practices that can help counteract it. Foremost among them is to simply breathe, and to make a commitment to our yoga practice. That engagement with ourselves and with yoga gives us empowerment. Well-known Boston lawyer Douglas Brooks sits down with David Oscar Markus to discuss the Harvard Fencing Coach case, an off-shoot of the Varsity Blues prosecution. The college admissions process gives all applicants – and their parents! – stress. The U.S. Attorney's office in Boston charged over 50 defendants in the biggest college scandal of our time, which they dubbed Varsity Blues. Only a handful had the guts to go to trial, including the fencing coach at Harvard, who turned to Douglas Brooks to help him. In this bonus episode, David Oscar Markus speaks with Doug, his old college and law school buddy, about the incredible trial tactics that led to this amazing acquittal.
We can see anxiety as a problem to be solved, or an enemy to be battled, or at the very least, a feature of ourselves that doesn't express our true self. But Professor Douglas Brooks offers the Sutras of Patanjali, other sacred texts, and lessons we can take from yoga, to explore a pathway to understanding anxiety that is empowering rather than debilitating, nurturing and protective rather than only stressful and terrorizing, and one that will help us enter a deeper relationship with ourselves.Links:RajanakaPrevious Glo Episodes featuring Professor Douglas Brooks include The Roots of Mindfulness, Part 1 and The Roots of Mindfulness, Part2GLO classes:Professor Douglas Brooks Classes on Glo

Multi-level Marketing (MLMs) is a consumer protection challenge! The Direct Selling Association (DSA) is a powerful lobby influencing American politics. Attorney Douglas Brooks has championed victims of pyramid schemes and MLMs. We describe the critical things you need to know about to protect yourself and your loved ones. Are you concerned that Crypto uses the same formula as MLMs - buy into the “dream” of making a fortune? For creators and early adopters, yes, it is possible to make money. A Little Bit Culty –If you’ve ever lost a friendship or a small fortune to a multi-level marketing organization, this episode of “A Little Bit Culty” is here to help un-gaslight you. Douglas Brooks, an attorney who represents victims of deceptive schemes, knows that getting caught up in one can be devastating. For the better part of 3 decades, he’s dedicated a significant portion of his practice to representing the victims of deceptive MLM schemes, including cases such as Webster v. Omnitrition International, Rhodes v. Consumers' Buyline, Inc., and Jacobs v. Herbalife International. Juliet is as real as they get. Her approach to yoga, and life, is honest, dedicated, funny and uniquely her own which is why I love hearing her perspective in this episode of the HYA podcast. What I truly admire about Juliet is she is a rule breaker just as much as she is a highly disciplined. She will never teach or do something just because “that's they way its done” - she is always sure to feel it and believe it in her own body and mind before offering it to others. When exploring the concept of honoring ones aura, Juliet reveals that “energy” is not her area of expertise, which makes it that much more intriguing to hear her genuine observances of her own energy, emotions and needs as she navigates her day to day. We also dive into what happens when we take our spiritual discipline too far, deeming it the “spiritual straight-jacket” - and how we can remain true to ourselves amidst our growth and practices. Remembering the need not only for discipline but for creativity, fun and a little rock n roll. Connect with Juliet! www.julietloranger.com www.schoolofyoganb.com www.goodyoganb.com Social Media: @julietflamethrower @goodyoganb About Juliet: Recently someone asked me the question, "Why do you teach yoga?". The response fell effortlessly from my mouth, "I teach yoga because I practice yoga. Also because it is an interesting and informative process and I believe everyone should somehow keep connected with the process of being informed." My personal practice of yoga is to establish a relationship with myself through process. To show up as myself in whatever that is and to nurture the components that lie in the traditions and philosophies of yoga. The classes I teach always invite participants to a place where they rejoice in what is, to educate about the fortifying qualities of alignment in postures combined with fluency of their breath. I look forward to sharing with others this discipline (yoga) as well as the freedom and inquiry to transform. 200 hour certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor & 500 hour certified with Noah Mazé and is currently involved in an in-depth training with Noah to be a certified YogaMazé instructor. Philosophy teacher is Douglas Brooks. I have been teaching for over 13 years. I have been a yoga studio owner for 10 years, currently, of the School of Yoga New Bedford & Good Yoga NB. I don't tend to refer to myself as an artist and a poet. I feel a far cry from both because my commitment to those expressive ventures is not full swing. Yet being creative and communicating are at my essence. I'm drawn to the edges of culture, the feelings of boredom in chaos, and I'm fascinated with the faces of people. The process of teaching yoga (to me) is a way to poetically weave aspects of living in the world and expanding understandings of ourselves with the human body/breath. Fuck yeah.

191215 Douglas Brooks - If This Book Doesn T Help by Richard Dugan
• Why managers need to remember what Einstein said • “There is absolutely no, zero, nada, zilch, reason why we … subscribe to Albert Einstein's definition of insanity” Fifteen years in management with the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company helped shape how management consultant Douglas Brooks looks at problems – and solutions. He has developed a 52-week plan for managers to develop greater customer-focused teamwork, to motivate and to retain top employees. Mr. Brooks has put his ideas into a new book with the blunt title, “If This Book Doesn't Help, It Might Be You.” “I tried to encapsulate questions and answers and opportunities for young leaders, new leaders, old leaders, C-suite leaders, to be able to stimulate conversations in their work group, whether it's at the board level or the line lever,” he says.
In this episode, Sommer Sobin, owner of Thousand Petals Yoga, is sharing her profound insight about Anusara yoga, Tantra yoga, beauty, and more. We cover a wide array of topics, including John Friend and the Anusara "implosion," the pedagogy of Douglas Brooks, and the hope of a new generation. Most importantly, Sommer reminds us that all of life offers the experience to learn and grow. And we have the opportunity to see our entire lives as a beautiful reflection of the Self. Along the way, we talk about book recommendations, raw desserts, my Catholic school woes, Italian yoga retreats, and beyond. Harvard University's head fencing coach was dismissed because of accusations of violating the university's conflict-of-interest policy. The policy prohibits Harvard employees from participating in situations that would benefit them personally but could also affect how they perform their responsibilities for the university. According to Harvard, Coach Peter Brand breached this policy when he closed a deal with Jie Zhao, a businessman whose son was later admitted to the university and the fencing team. Zhao's other son has graduated from Harvard in 2018 and was also a member of the fencing team. In 2016, Brand sold his house in Massachusetts, United States, to Zhao. Based on investigations, Zhao bought Brand's house for $989,500 when its actual estimated value was less than $550,000. Zhao did not live in the house and sold it for a much lower value 17 months later. Harvard suspects that the deal was made to help Zhao's son enter the university and the fencing team. The two men have known each other since Zhao's older son became part of Brand's fencing team. However, Zhao insisted that their real estate deal was not a bribe to get his other son into the university. He explained that buying the house was a good investment and a way to financially help Brand. He also added that his son had good academic standing and could get admitted to Harvard without any help. Brand, on the other hand, refuses to speak about the issue. However, his lawyer Douglas Brooks criticized the university's decision to dismiss Brand. Brooks believes that the act was a disservice to Brand, who has worked for the university for two decades. He also mentioned that Brand is planning to sue Harvard.
Settling the Prana Shakti in Your Body Meditation is a way to Surrender in the Experience of Now. This is a foundational Tantric Yoga Meditation Practice to get you ready for deeper states of Meditation. It is very important to be able to settle your life force energy in your body to further your practices and exploration of Tantric Yoga Meditation. This Meditation was recently taught by Christopher Wallis at a recent Shaiva Tantra for Daily Life Retreat at Omega Institute for Holistic Studies during July of 2019. He urged his students there to practice this form of meditation as a basic practice at that time. This is my interpretation of his teaching. In the early 1990's, I saw a book in a bookstore called "The Doctrine of Vibration: An Analysis of the Doctrines and Practices associated with Kashmir Shaivism (SUNY series in the Shaiva Traditions of Kashmir)" by Mark Dyczkowski. I had been at one time fascinated by the song "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys and I had seen the Star Wars Movie by George Lucas where the main characters all had some kind of "Force Within" some kind of Vibrational Awareness. At the time, I thought to myself, WOW, there is even an ancient doctrine of Vibration, scriptures or Tantras written over a 1000+ years ago describing the study of Vibrations. This study is a type of Inner Yoga, a Meditation Yoga. Those teachers had names like Upaldeva, Abinavagupta, and Keshmaharaj. That is when my study and fascination with all things Tantra, Shaiva Tantra or Kashmir Shaivism. I read books by Lakshman Too, Paul Mueller-Ortega, and Douglas Brooks. I was even able to take some courses with the latter two professors. The translations for many of the Tantras of interest such as the Vijnana Bhairava, The Recognition Sutras, the Spanda Karikas, Shiva Sutras, and the Tantraloka left a lot to be desired and were very poorly done. Fast forward to about 5 years ago when a teacher I knew named Christopher Hareesh Wallis a Phd Sanskrit authority and practitioner wrote a book called Tantra Illuminated and a couple years later a fantastic translation of the Recognition Sutras where he was able to translate the practices in a way that made them come very alive and vital for todays meditation practitioner. These practices are a gold mine of Inner Revelation and detail specific Meditation Practices and Strategies for NonDual Shaiva Tantra. I had taken some online courses with Christopher in the past couple of years and had been practicing many of the Tantric Yoga Meditation Sequences in the Vijnana Bhairava and Recognition Sutras with a lot of success. Absolutely beautiful practices that are just not very well known yet. Being a Hatha Yoga Teacher, I am thrilled to practice the inner postures as a way to take yoga beyond the Mat. This is why I am doing this podcast, to preserve, detail, and practice some of the Tantric Yoga Meditation practices I have learned and loved. Here is a beautiful basic short Foundational Practice. I hope it bears fruit for you as it has done for me. You can find Melissa Abbott Yoga & Meditation Podcast on YouTube, Podbean, Spotify, and iTunes Podcasts. Namaste, Melissa Abbott
Glo founder Derik Mills joined me for a sweet, edifying conversation on my last trip to film at Glo. We touched upon the last ten years of digital evolution, the future of virtual practice and the heart of what we do together at Glo.com. Derik is the CEO/founder of Glo, formerly YogaGlo, a health and wellness brand that challenges people to live a fulfilling life. Glo believes in a world in which we all live our true potential. In 2008, Derik teamed up with his younger brother to found and self-fund Glo. They started by converting a Santa Monica workspace into a recording studio to film yoga and meditation classes that were free for the public to attend. The online service grew to empower subscribers to experience yoga, meditation, lecture, and online continuing education courses taught by world-class instructors from anywhere in the world. Today, in 2019, the company remains self-funded and has expanded to a team of more than 100 people, including faculty, and produced more than 10,000 classes. The company is currently expanding into additional wellness modalities--all in service of providing a personalized experience that makes it easy for members to integrate self-care into their everyday lives. Featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes, Goop, Oprah, and more, Glo has become a cultural phenomenon driven by Derik’s devotion to contributing to something larger than himself. Ashton Szabo is a yoga teacher, a self-described anatomy geek and host of the Anatomy of Living Podcast. Ashton is based in Encinitas California, so we were very lucky to have the opportunity to record a conversation with him online. I'm a huge fan of Ashton's work as a podcaster and he is one of my inspirations for starting this podcast, so we are super excited to be able to share this episode with you! In this conversation, we talk about Ashton's story growing up, and how he found yoga through an interest in martial arts. We hear how he packed up his life in the US and moved to a small island in Thailand, and what his life was like there. We learn how Ashton's interest in thinkers like Joseph Campbell and Alan Watts, and the influence of teacher Douglas Brooks lead to him becoming the inspirational storyteller he is. We also learn how Ashton uses his extensive knowledge of both eastern philosophy and anatomy in the classes he teaches. As well as that, there is plenty more good stuff in this interview. Now normally we release our podcasts on a fortnightly schedule, but we were getting too far ahead with our interviews, so this week we have an extra special bonus episode! We have entered the Australian Podcast Awards! Now we know it's a longshot, as we are up against some pretty big competition, but if you could vote for us, that would be amazing - you can vote here: https://australianpodcastawards.submittable.com/gallery/2829f195-1021-4d7c-853f-f0ce775f4fa4/9573623/ Links: Ashton - Hanuman: The Devotion and Power of the Monkey God by Vanamali, and Sri Krishna Das http://amzn.to/2DkrYOw The Shiva Sutras translation by Swami Lakshmanjoo - http://amzn.to/2p7NQI6 Rane - One Simple Thing by Mitch Horowitz - http://amzn.to/2GlUXVD Jo - Square Credit Card processing - https://squareup.com/

Now coming up on my 11th year of practicing yoga I see that am deeply into my commitment on and more off the mat along with how I interact with myself and the world - I feel blessed. When I look back on the 5 years in LA and the journey to become a teacher, a wife, a writer a person I see I have grown exponentially through experience and to the many people who offered me a place to feel safe to reveal myself. Yes I have grown in a major ways and what was the most important to me is the soil in which I planted my seeds then the food and nourishment that followed. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't thank my teachers they have said the many things which allow me to see who I am today and get a glimpse of who I am becoming. Yoga as my teacher Dr. Douglas Brooks says so beautifully is Growing Yourself - how sweet and wonderful to know so we can all see that we are becoming different flowers worth picking. Take a moment before sitting on your mat and check in to see how much you have grown and see the soil you have tended to and how it has supported you to be who you are. Also, if you are in the process of shifting and moving into a place of freedom to choose who it is you want to be let this be a practice to support, nourish and take you deeper into your beauty. After sitting nearby one of my sweet teachers Naime Jezzeny (he helped me to see both my potential and the possibilities to be the person I am today) last weekend in his workshop which focused on the Upanishads (means to sit nearby) I was inspired to share with you these teachings inspired from our teacher Dr. Douglas Brooks . When we sit among others and share, listen and realize we all have amazing potential that is in nature. Amidst this diversity you may find a moment of feeling connected to the source (potential) and through this awareness you may discover a new way to express yourself (possibilities). I know now that I always had the potential within myself to be a yoga teacher but until it was time for me to find teachers who would show me that it was possible then I was able to connect to my own heart and could actually believe it for myself - this was huge for my growth as a person and only 5 years ago. My love for yoga took me to go deeper into Philosophy and realize that I can study seeing that I was intelligent and it was possible to enjoy learning - thanks to Douglas for his teachings open me to more possibilities than I could ever imagine within myself. We all can relate when we find gifts that are within that come out on the mat, in conversation, at work or in relationships. This is all about my teacher Douglas Brooks, although I don't really speak about him in the class. I only try as best as I can to explain what this incredible philosophy is about. As I say during the class, and as Douglas has said many, many times before, "this is a practice that is learned from ear to ear, not from mouth to ear," so my explanation of it, is what I've 'heard.' I do my best to honor him through my words. As always I only hope to become clearer and more precise in the teachings. If you want to hear him, in his own voice, explain the philosophy check out this link where you can buy his Philosphy CD's: http://anusara.com/?pagerequested=subcategories&cat=10&page_number=1 and of course Douglas's actual site, so you can go to one of his philosophy workshops, he is not to be missed! http://rajanaka.com Hillary's Yoga Practice! subscribe to her podcast through itunes here The Sequence: Sukhasana with Parvatasana arms (arms interlaced above the head) Sukhasana with side stretch Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) Child's Pose (Balasana) Downward Facing Dog Straight Legged Lunge into straightening the front leg Uttanasana Half Sun Salutation Sun Salutations x 2 Crescent Pose Demo of Pincha Mayurasana (me jabbering for a while, then you guys get to go at it for quite a while, try to do the full pose 3x) Pincha Mayurasana Tree pose with Eagle arms (Vrksanana with Garundasana arms) Tadasana into a lateral side stretches (sometimes referred to as Crescent Moon) Vashistasana Prep (with front leg forward) Lunge Twist Child's pose Twisting Side Angle Pose Prep (Pavrita Parvakonasana Prep) Deep Lunge with elbows on the ground Uttanasana with arms interlaced behind the back Parsvotanasana Malasana Uttanasana Seated Baby Craddle (check out Stage 1 and the Stage 2, choose accordingly) Oh yeah, how bizarre do I look in the stage 1 pic, geez :) Easy seated twist (Sukhasana Twist) Krounchasana Variation into a Krounchasana variation Twist On the back! yeay!!! Being responsible and taking care of our bills, our car, our bodies is part of yoga and action. If we ignore what we have to do then when we want to experience other delights in life there can be difficulty and even a disconnect without the foundation being cared for. Nitya karma is exactly that keeping all the ducks in a row, being accountable which the universe does all the time. Kaamya karma is where we play with what we want to do (desire) within the support of these boundaries. One is stability which offers freedom to express as the other opens us to explore the wonders of life with its duties and desires. Traditionally the definition can be read through these links: Nitya Karmas and Kaamya Karmas. How I am using these words is in relation to our everyday life outside of Hindu life which translates quite nicely. This was how I was taught by my teacher, Dr. Douglas Brooks. Just Breathe... Simple huh? We do it unconsciously more than consciously and even if we forget to breathe it happens as long as we are alive. If you hold your breath you will pass out then She (the goddess) will breathe you. Once I understood how the rhythm of my breath moved within my body my practice deepened & expanded. I became more connected and in touch with how I felt, connected to others and most importantly my body finding ease. Breathing is simple yet complex at times but always there to guide us when we focus our awareness on its flow. note: you may hear more of my breath with a new mic - thank you Gayle In this episode I mention a Tantric way of looking at the breath in the form of the goddess/universe and you are co-participating with her as you inhale and exhale. WOW - is right that was my response until I went deeper and actually found comfort in the thought and reality of it. I must thank my sweet teacher who poetically taught me this beautiful teaching of breath. (Douglas Brooks is my teacher of Rajanka Tantra) Soon he will have a book out titled Rajanaka Heart.
