In today's digital age, prospective students are bombarded with information about colleges and universities. They can easily find out about a school's academic offerings, campus life, and cost of attendance. However, it can be difficult for students to sift through all of this information and find the information that is most relevant to them. This is why creating student experiences that are catered is so valuable. Because the institutions that can connect with students on that level, will survive the enrollment cliff. We discuss this and other tools for success in Higher Ed with Dustin Ramsdell. Connect with Dustin Ramsdell on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dustinramsdell/

As a campus tour guide back in 2005, Mallory Willsea noticed students would ask very different questions when they were alone vs. when they were with their parents or in a group. When she graduated, Mallory started working in the admissions office just when digital was starting to happen. She remembered how differently students would behave when alone, so she came up with a tactic to let them ask anonymous questions using a form. The results? A ton more questions. Grateful students. Real opportunities for connection. And for Mallory? A career of customer-centric innovation that's consistently been two steps ahead of everyone else.About the ShowEach episode of Talking Tactics is devoted to a single tactic that moved the needle on a specific enrollment metric: inquiries, booth visitors, apps started, video views, you name it.The catch? The tactic had to be done with limited resources: either by a single person, a small but mighty team, limited time, or without a lot of money. The full session description is below:“Higher ed institutions continue to face headwinds due to enrollment declines, so limited resources must be deployed intentionally. The solution is to “right size” the different components of the institution to adapt to a constantly changing landscape. This takes the shape of things such as converting computer labs into esports arenas, integrating chatbots, and the metaverse. The Niche Movement Founder Kevin O’Connell returns to podcasting with Dustin Ramsdell to discuss working for yourself, building personal brands, and establishing careers in higher education.Dustin started his digital reputation with Higher Ed Geek Blog before getting involved with higher education as a career path. After graduate school and working for a few years, Dustin was hired at 2U where he worked until August of 2018. Described as a “software as a service” company that helps colleges integrate their online graduate degree programs, 2U brought Dustin down to the Mid-Atlantic region from his upbringings in Maine: “Once I started talking to someone, it was quick, it was efficient, it was casual, it worked.”Also explored in this episode is a conversation about marketing transferable skills for employers and creating a unique resume. Kevin and Dustin discuss major life transitions, being flexible, crafting digital brands, podcasting before it was cool, networking via podcasting, Baltimore craft beer, and creating the life you want to live.Dustin’s current podcast is the Higher Ed Geek.

20:Student AffairsGrad School Prep, part 1 WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCASTA few weeks ago, I reached out to the Millennials in Student Affairs Facebook Group and shared an old blog post that I wrote three years ago with some tips on navigating and researching graduate programs in Student Affairs in Higher Education. From the response this post always receives, I wanted to also ask if any of my recent graduates/new professionals were willing to chat with me about their experiences in grad school. The five folks I speak with on this episode are all FRESH in the field, with no one having more than 3 years of post-grad professional experience. Granted, not all experiences will be represented here, but there truly are some dynamic perspectives and critical critiques of the field as a whole. So I hope you enjoy this first part of the chat. And stay tuned for part two next week!THIS WEEK'S GUESTS ARE: Lisa GilbertInstitution: Coastal Carolina University (Conway, South Carolina)Position: Community CoordinatorGrad school: Florida State UniversityFollow on Twitter: @LisaM_Gilbert  Joe YbarraInstitution: Sam Houston University (Huntsville, Texas)Position: Residence Hall CoordinatorGrad school: Indiana State UniversityFollow on Twitter: @Texicaraguan Veratta Pegram-FloydInstitution: University of OregonPosition: Student Services Assistant Director - College of Film StudiesGrad school: Seattle UniversityFollow on Twitter: @Sassy_BlackMEd Derrick PicardInstitution: Mitchell College (New London, Connecticut)Position: Campus Life CoordinatorGrad School: University of LouisvilleFollow on Twitter: @Trill_Picard  Alyssa Frey OrlandoInstitution: Merrimack College (North Andover, Massachusetts)Position: Admissions CounselorGrad school: Boston CollegeFollow on Twitter: @ACFOrlando MUSIC NOTE:- You get to hear some tunes from the band, Neaux, which just released its debut LP, "Chain Up the Sun," through The Native Sound. Join guests Kayley Robsham, Chris Trudell, and Dustin Ramsdell for their advice on exploring careers in educational technology, the challenges they faced shifting from student affairs to edtech,  and how to evaluate vendors.
