“I said, ‘I really wish a book existed with more women composers in it'... This book is so important in 2024 with equality and inclusivity being at the forefront of our profession. I think that this is timely, and I think it's a great representation of where we're going in our profession right now especially given the fact that I see a lot more programming to be equal with male composers and women composers.”Alan Troy Davis is a conductor, music educator, tenor, and voice teacher with extensive experience in both academic and community music settings. He has completed the coursework for a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degree in choral conducting at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and is currently finalizing his doctoral document. He also holds a Master of Music (M.M.) in Choral Conducting from California State University–Los Angeles, a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Secondary Education from Portland State University, and a Bachelor of Musical Arts (B.M.A.) in Music from Pacific Lutheran University.Davis has taught in public high schools across Oregon, Colorado, and California and has directed a variety of church and community ensembles. His research interests focus on choral intonation, conducting pedagogy and score study, vocal pedagogy within choral rehearsals, Renaissance and Baroque performance practices and repertoire, and the exploration of choral repertoire by women composers. As a compiler and contributing author, Davis is playing a key role in the forthcoming book Choral Repertoire by Women Composers, scheduled for publication by GIA Publications, Inc. in January 2025. In addition, he will co-present an interest session titled In Her Voice: Highlighting Female Composers at the 2025 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Conference in Dallas, Texas. To get in touch with Alan, you can find him on Instagram (@thechoralgeek) or Facebook (@alantdavis) or email him at alantroydavis@gmail.com.Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson

Send us a Text Message. In this episode, Rylie Heck speaks with Andrea Mancuso about parental well-being and how that can connect to their children's mental health. Andrea was a School Psychologist for the New York City Public Schools for over 14 years. She served the NYC school system and supported thousands of children and their families during that time. Much of Andrea's work emphasizes awareness and acceptance, proactive self-care and effective communication between parent and child. Throughout her years working with parents, she has found it to be exceptionally important for parents to open up to the possibility of locking arms with trusted professionals to best support their children. Andrea also works hard to empower parents to take care of themselves to the best of their ability. It takes a village; And the village must be healthy to be impactful with the care of vulnerable children. Andrea is a highly skilled consultant and dynamic facilitator. Parents Navigating the Teen Years
81: Why Prioritizing Support Over Discipline Helps Teens Thrive

Parents Navigating the Teen Years

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2024 19:51

When our teens engage in challenging behavior, it often triggers negative feelings inside of parents and ignites fears for the future. That fear can lead us to increase our discipline which can lead to heightened conflict. When we learn to see our teen's behavior through a new lens - as an opportunity to identify skills that need to be developed, it can help parents focus on support rather than discipline. That change in perspective and change in our approach helps our teens feel understood and helps them want to collaborate rather than push back. After 19 years, Andrea left her thriving career as a lawyer to homeschool her autistic son when she was unable to find a school in which he could flourish. After nearly eight years of homeschooling, her son was ready to return to school. Instead of returning to her law career, Andrea wanted to share her knowledge and experience with other parents. She also returned to school and earned a Master's degree in Education (M.S.Ed.) to maximize her impact in supporting parents. She started Autism Parent Solutions, to educate, support and empower parents with parent coaching to reclaim the joy of parenting as they help their autistic children make rapid progress, grow communication and collaboration, and create a peaceful home. Key Takeaways Support over discipline: when our children misbehave, we have a tenancy to lean in discipline when often the case is that they do not yet have the skills to cope with what's happening. Skill deficiency leads to misbehavior. Help your teen grow the skills that will give them the support they need to correct behaviors. Parents can take a moment before responding to misbehavior to collect their thoughts and try to understand what is going on for their teen instead of feeling like they have to react right away. An example of opening to a broader understanding might be to consider, “He/she is not giving me a hard time…he/she is having a hard time.” “He/she is doing the best he/she can. Sometimes parents need help implementing what they read and hear about on healthy parenting skills. Parents have their own experiences, beliefs and thoughts about how they were raised when they were a teen and this can influence how they parent their own kids. As parents, we often try to control what's going on for our teens, when that can be the least effective approach. When parents have an understanding of their teen's behavior, it can help their teen feel confident, seen and heard. Heavy-handed discipline can lower your teen's self-esteem. Confident parenting doesn't mean it's perfect. It means you've done a great job and you can be gentle with yourself when things go sideways. It's important as a parent to stop and celebrate what's working. In the 1940s and 50s George Adamski , using a six inch telescope and a box camera, took pictures of what he believed were extraterrestrial space ships. Many can forward to debunk the photos but Adamski held firm that they were real. in addition, as a contactee, Adamski had messages from the aliens for people on Earth to be careful with natural resources and nuclear weapons.Tonight, Gerard Aartsen will talk about Adamski and the photos and his experiences while in contact with extraterrestrials.Gerard Aartsen (1957) is an author, speaker, researcher and educator from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He has been a lifelong student of the Ageless Wisdom teaching, which holds that at the beginning or end of each cosmic Cycle (or Age) a Teacher returns with a new revelation about the source and evolution of consciousness that needs to be given expression by living according to the Golden Rule to establish right human relations. His many years of study and research resulted in the online reference ‘Our Elder Brothers Return – A History in Books‘ (2008).Gerard is also the author of eight books about the extraterrestrial presence, which he sees as further evidence of the evolution of consciousness and the universal manifestation of Life. In his books he takes the accounts of the original 1950s ‘contactees' as a starting point, dating as they do from before the time when the narrative about ET visitors was contaminated by deliberate disinformation to contain the growing public interest in their calls for international cooperation during the Cold War. He was the first to explicate a method for qualitative research into claims of contact, for which he uses the transdisciplinary synthesis approach. His research into George Adamski signalled a thorough reassessment of this major case of contact, and led to his re-discovering of Adamski's forgotten first publication, The Invisible Ocean, in 2018.Several of Gerard's books have been translated and published in multiple languages and his articles have appeared in magazines around the world. Gerard is a frequent guest on international radio shows about UFOs and related subjects, and has lectured about his work in America, Europe and Asia.Gerard has a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), the Netherlands.
