An interview with director Peter Jones and producer Taylor Vracin-Harrell about their moving new documentary Fortunate Sons on PBS. The film is an intimate, unguarded portrait about friendship, love, loss, redemption, and the lasting bonds between the men of Los Angeles' Harvard School for Boys, class of '74? While The Beatles rocked a generation, and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy shocked the nation – seventy-two 12 year-old boys entered the 7th grade at Harvard School for Boys, an elite, private military academy. Born into privilege and groomed to lead, they spent the next 50 years individually navigating their place in the world and the continuous cultural revolutions taking place around them, only to find themselves reconnecting by Zoom five decades later during the isolating months of the Covid pandemic. What began as casual video calls between former classmates, quickly evolved into rare and vulnerable conversations about their dreams and fears, family dysfunction, addiction, ambition, failure, and achievement. Beneath these conversations they collectively explored larger narratives about friendship, masculinity, privilege and mental health. John Fogerty is the vocalist, lead guitarist and principal songwriter behind the legendary rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. With chart-topping hits like "Proud Mary" and "Fortunate Son,” he's helped shape the sound of American music. But for decades, John didn't own the rights to his own songs. That changed recently when he decided to re-record new versions of his biggest hits. In this career-spanning conversation with guest host Garvia Bailey, John talks about reclaiming his artistic legacy, and how falling in love with his wife changed everything for him.

Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

It's episode 69 and so our brave Casual Explorers are showing their emotional age by watching the infamous ‘everyone gets drunk, horny and crazy' episodes of Star Trek, TOS' The Naked Time where George Takei shows off his impressive sword and TNG's less impressive ‘The Naked Now' where Charlie asks the most important question ‘if Data has no emotions, why did his creator build him to be fully functional, sexually?' and Miles asks the second most important question ‘Why have this as an second episode?' Meanwhile, Guest-Star Cele from ‘Celeste is Best' gets to talk about Lower Decks' own ‘everyone goes drunk and crazy' with ‘Empathalogical Fallacies' and has no real important questions to ask except ‘why is this so delightful?' WARNING: Believing yourself to be descended from Irish Kings does not in fact make you an Irish King.EPISODES DISCUSSED: ‘The Naked Time' (19:44) ‘The Naked Now' (52:44) ‘Empathalogical Fallacies' (1:25:09)TALKING POINTS INCLUDE: Donut County, the Elric books, the Superman movie, Man of Steel, Fortunate Son was not the only song about Vietnam, Spock looks weird in a black t-shirt, Sulu looks great with no shirt, Spock is a huggy drunk, how NOT to follow up your first episode of a brand new TV Series, Picard's weird grunting, Miles and Charlie share stories of drunken productiveness, the failure of the writers to make Wesley likeable, the canonical reason why Data is ‘fully functional' and why Lore is EEEEEVIL, Denise Crosby's incredible mincing and costumes, everyone should watch Lifeforce, the very referential nature of Lower Decks feels like a bug, Worf would not host a poetry slam, Cele gushes about the fantastic work of Jamie Loftus.PEDANTS CORNER: Miles pronounces D'Artagnan as Dogtanian, but the Muskehounds are always ready.

Watch This Episode On YouTubeWith the baritones of Bono and U2 as the soundtrack, the globe-trotting world of Mary Robinson requires an epic film to depict her life, and thankfully, they found the director that can deliver just that in Irish filmmaker Aoife Kelleher.Aoife gave us the brilliant film MRS ROBINSON (2024), still on its festival run. MRS ROBINSON tells the inspirational life story of change-maker Mary Robinson: Ireland's first female President, a pioneering UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the successor of Nelson Mandela as Chair of The Elders. And if all that wasn't enough, check out her film, TESTIMONY (2025), also on the festival circuit. Not sure when Aoife has time to sleep but she found time to talk with me for the podcast, and I'm delighted to share that conversation with you.In this episode, Aoife and I discuss:her biographical statement that she seeks in her work to "tell hidden truths about Ireland and Irishness" -- what does that mean? what is an Irish film?;how did she get involved in filmmaking? "my parents were primary school principals and my dad was a politician so it was like, there were a lot of debates around these kind of themes at the dinner table";her switch from law to filmmaking -- "I'd had this work experience in a legal firm that had put me off the idea of pursuing law";what did she learn from her first documentary ONE MILLION DUBLINERS (2014) that she takes away for her current film?how did she get the opportunity to make MRS ROBINSON (2024), even with pitching against many other companies -- "you really can't stress [enough] how large Mary Robinson looms in Irish society";how she made it clear they weren't creating a puff piece documentary -- "from the earliest points in the pitching process, we made it clear that we would not be doing that, and that was what she wanted, too";how she was able to license U2 and other prominent musicians as part of this film (they were going to play "Fortunate Son" by CCR in a Vietnam scene...I think it worked out better with Bono!);the climate activism portion of the film and how it resonates now versus 30 years ago;how has documentary changed in the last ten years?;what's next for her? In a letter to the editor, written in a blog, by contacting your lawmakers, taking it to the streets and there are many other ways. Pete Seeger was known for his songs protesting mistreatment of workers and war itself, and over time there has been a great abundance of songs and actions of protest. Marvin Gaye, CCR, Nina Simone, Dylan, Lennon and many others wrote and performed their protest songs from What's Goin' on?, Blowin' in the Wind to Fortunate Son, Give Peace a chance and Strange Fruit. In the future you'll hear an episode of Tales Vinyl Tells dedicated to protest songs. Please send your ideas to me at TalesVinylTells@gmail.com and yours may well be included. And when you email me, please be sure to let me know who and where you are. I mention protest songs because we kick off with a real kicker from Quicksilver Messenger Service and include Petty, Joni, Cheech, Chong, Nick and more. Thanks for listening. In his latest book, Maxim Furek, a former psychologist and rock journalist, delves into the intriguing world of Bigfoot synchronicity, embracing interdimensional theories, mass hallucinations, and Jung's collective unconscious.Furek's dedication to the subject is evident in the hundreds of accounts from researchers who strive to answer the question, "If it's not flesh and blood, then what is it?"This question forms the heart of the author's evocative thesis as he tirelessly scours American and Canadian records for evidence of this elusive cryptid. For centuries, early newspapers printed accounts of bipedal creatures, variously listed as "Wild Men," "Hairy Giants," or "Sasquatch," a narrative that has expanded into a larger scientific, religious, and paranormal reality. This reality, as Furek presents it, is a complex web of scientific theories, religious interpretations, and paranormal phenomena that intersect in the study of Bigfoot.Furek's investigation into the tribes of true believers congregating at conferences, campsites, and online websites is a testament to their shared philosophy and "Bigfoot's sociocultural energy."He takes issue with hoaxers, whom he charges "have sold their souls," but his respect for the believers is unwavering. The author challenges traditional beliefs about Bigfoot and encourages readers to embrace the seemingly impossible. After reading this book, your perspective on Sasquatch will be forever changed as you look at traditional science, anthropology, and religion through a different lens and with a different expectation."Paranormal author and rock journalist Maxim Furek has emerged as the 21st-century incarnation of John Keel. In "The Lost Tribes of Bigfoot," Furek explores the uncharted waters surrounding the cryptid's forbidden realm in a rousing and controversial exposé."- Doug Hajicek, MonsterQuestMaxim W. Furek's eclectic background includes aspects of psychology, addictions, and rock journalism. He has a master's degree in Communications from Bloomsburg University and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Aquinas College. He is an avid researcher of contemporary drug trends and psychosocial aspects of the drug culture. He has written numerous articles for both addictions and rock publications. His books include The Jordan Brothers: Rock's Fortunate Sons; The Death Proclamation of Generation X: A Self-Fulfilling Prophesy of Goth, Grunge and Heroin, which traces the origins of the current opiate epidemic, and Sheppton: The Myth, Miracle, and Music. This week we're talking with four hybrid/self-published authors. Christine Amoroso spent the first decade of her professional career as an accountant. In 1997 she chased a childhood dream and began a career in elementary education, first as a teacher and then a principal. In 2014 she started a blog, Bare Naked in Public, writing personal narratives about life's lessons. In 2017, Christine sold her possessions and moved to Italy to write her memoir. A year later she returned home with the first draft of her memoir Bare Naked in Public, published in July of this year. When Christine's not writing, she power-walks along the coast, plays soccer, and indulges her grandchildren. She travels abroad every chance she gets.  Andrew Bridgeman has nearly as many twists in his own story as there are in his novel. A former rugby player, jazz singer, salesman, and entrepreneur, he finds inspiration in the characters he's crashed into along the way. Mr. Bridgeman studied creative writing at Dickinson College and earned his MBA from Washington University in Saint Louis. After decades in the St. Louis Area, he now lives in New Hampshire with his wife, Kathy. He enjoys hiking in the mountains near his home, playing guitar, and exploring the US in an Airstream RV. Fortunate Son is his debut novel. Nancy Klann-Moren is an author, artist and third generation Southern California native. She began her writing journey after a career in advertising and marketing. Short stories were her primary genre until an instructor encouraged her to turn one into a novel. Her two novels, The Clock of Life and Love and Protest, explore  how ordinary people getting involved in social activism can make a difference for the greater good.  Her collection of short stories, Like the Flies On The Patio, is a insightful glimpse into the lives of working class people. Anne Moose has mostly made her living as a technical writer. She has a background as an editor and small book publisher in Berkeley California, so self-publishing came naturally to her. In recent years she has written and published three novels: Arkansas Summer, House of Fragile Dreams, and her latest, When You Read This I'll Be Gone. They span different genres while each is a suspenseful story highlighting social issues she cares about deeply. The authors join Barbara DeMarco-Barrett to talk about their path to writing and hybrid or indie publishing, the pros and cons, tips, and more. SIDE A: THE ASSASSINATION OF CCR BY THE COWARD BURTON KANTER How CCR's Woodstock headlining set got sabotaged by the Grateful Dead, the silk topper inspiration for “Fortunate Son”, not getting respect from the “cool” rock media, providing material support to the American Indian occupation of Alcatraz, renegotiating their contract with Fantasy Records bigwig Saul Zaentz, Saul convincing CCR to put all their earnings offshore in Castle Bank and a grapevine of shell entities, Tom Fogerty's painful departure in '71, John's revenge on Negative Stu and No-Shuffle Doug with “Mardi Gras” in '72, the end of CCR, Tom's underrated solo career/chooglin' with suslord Jerry Garcia, Tom subtweeting John on “Sign of the Devil”, John's stint with David Geffen and the scrapped lo-fi “Hoodoo” album, realizing that ALL of Creedence's money has vanished into a “Bahamian abyss”, years of seclusion and lawsuits, getting even with Burt Kanter, Zaentz's new role as serrrious Hollywood producer of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest” and “Amadeus”, John realizing he's Zaentz's Pinocchio puppet, his 1985 return with “Zanz Kant Danz” and “Mr. Greed”, Tom's new “best friend” Saul Zaentz, more lawsuits and fighting, Tom's tragic death from AIDS in 1990, his dying wish that the other three Creedence guys choogle together one last time, and John's NOT-on-haqq refusal to play with Stu, Doug, and Tom's son Jeff at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction in 1993. SIDE B: EFFIGY Donald Trump's purchase of Resorts International in 1987, cocaine trafficking in 1980s Bahamas, Medellin Cocaine Nazi Carlos “Joe” Lehder making Norman's Cay his castle and garden, US Ambassador to the Bahamas/Slava Ukraini Banderite/WACL suslord Lev Dobriansky telling the CIA station chief to “find another job”, Kanter's relationships with international oil man Bruce Rappaport and Bill Casey, Indonesian oil schemes in the 1960s, the Bank of New York, the ill-fated Aqaba oil pipeline project in Iraq, looting the Soviet economy, Antigua as training ground for Contras, IDF machine guns for Colombian drug cartels, BCCI/Rappaport overlaps, “left-leaning wealth advisor” Josh Kanter's Alliance for a Better Utah and Kanter Family Foundation, Linda Pritzker aka Lama Tsomo's Namchak Foundation in Montana, Nick Pritzker bankrolling Gavin Newsom's career, Tom Pritzker running the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Nick and Tom Pritzker's multiple phone numbers in Epstein's black book, Virginia Roberts Giuffre's allegations against Tom Pritzker, the Kanter law firm of Neal, Gerber, & Eisenberg's continuing services to the Pritzker family, and last but not least, some thoughts on how it doesn't whip ass when left-leaning media influencers try to meme Big Boy JB Pritzker into the White House, especially when one's uncle happens to have been a Burt Kanter protegé/Pritzker family attorney for the last 50 years.
