Frankly, Sinatra still matters (with Seth MacFarlane)

What if the Chairman of the Board's biggest contribution to music wasn't his voice, but the blueprint he created for modern pop stardom? Frank Sinatra didn't just sing songs: he invented the concept album, injected his full personality into every performance, and created a template for artistic control that today's biggest stars still follow. His influence runs deeper than you think: Amy Winehouse titled her debut Frank as tribute, Jay-Z calls himself "the new Sinatra," and Frank Ocean borrowed his name from both Sinatra and Ocean's Eleven. That influence extends to unexpected places too: Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, has been championing Sinatra's orchestral style for years, and through his friendship with the Sinatra family gained access to over 1,200 boxes of never-recorded arrangements. His new album Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements features songs that arranged for Sinatra but never performed, uncovering musical treasures that reveal new insights into how the Chairman of the Board's innovations still shape the sound of pop music today. This Song Is Yours

Our guest today is Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter Brandon. The multi-instrumentalist makes music that floats between alternative, R&B, and modern folk—crafting some of the smoothest, most delicate sounds you'll hear this year. With the release of his entirely self-produced debut album Before You Go, Brandon has firmly carved out a space of his own, drawing comparisons to artists like Dijon, Mk.Gee, and Frank Ocean. It's a beautifully restrained collection of alt-R&B, rich with emotional depth and intricate production that rewards repeat listens. While in LA, we sat down with Brandon to talk about the making of Before You Go, from recording in his college dorm to working in his own studio. He reflects on the influence of music education, the mentors who nurtured his creativity, and the wide range of artists—from Prince to Pearl Jam—that continue to shape his sound.Brandon: Instagram / Spotify Purchase Before You Go hereVisit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of English post-punk band Gang of Four in under thirty minutes.Gang of Four played a stripped-down mix of punk rock, funk and dub, with a lyrics addressing societal/political issues. Their acclaimed debut album, Entertainment!, was released in 1979. Their early 80s albums (Songs of the Free and Hard) found them softening some of their abrasive qualities, progressing towards dance-punk and disco. They are widely considered one of the leading bands of the late 1970s/early 1980s post-punk movement, inspiring everyone from Kurt Cobain to Frank Ocean. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Any consistent listener of the cast would know at this point that I must really dig this Close To You joint and yes. Yes I do. Stevie Wonder on the talkbox being by far my favorite version. Frank Ocean mix second, Sinatra third. The original is almost unrecognisable after hearing those three. At least to my knowledge the original was Burt Bacharach if I'm not mistaken. I'm not doing research this is just regular knowledge that a C-list internet disc jockey has bouncing around in my musically inclined melon. The Bacharach version, God bless him, I highly doubt that the lady he was singing about was ever satisfied. He has tons of heart but, sweet mercy.. That delivery, I can tell he hikes his pants and would never think to bless a lovely young woman with a plate of cheese fries at Outback Steakhouse and possibly see what happens after like an honorable gentleman. I'm absolutely out of my mind and have a goose loose. It's all good though baby. Tons of fresh ammunition for the next installment. Found some awesome old 45's.. Sinatra, Tony Bennett, an Ozzy Osbourne and a super sick find that I will keep a surprise til next episode. Til then, I remain your most honorable host. The Capt. After songs like “Mirage” and “Dirty Dancer” saw huge streaming numbers, Orion Sun landed herself on countless “artists to watch” lists, and her debut was one of the most highly anticipated releases of 2024. The 14-song collection exceeded expectations and garnered the LA-based R&B artist fans across the globe. With her sensual delivery of vulnerable topics like heartbreak and self-discovery, Orion's modern take on the genre draws likeness from contemporaries like Frank Ocean and SZA.Watch Orion Sun perform “Already Gone” and “These Days” live at WNXP's Sonic Cathedral here.

Celebs flocked to NYC to celebrate 50 years of Lorne and 36 years of Haim 1 — plus, Patty Schwartz went full-ish frontal on the season premiere of The White Lotus! Elizabeth Holmes got the cover of People mag, Hailee Steinfeld released a drink(?), the Chiltern Firehouse caught, uh, on fire??? and Craig T. Director Nabil Elderkin shoots music videos and films governed by vision, collaboration and diversity. While thematic similarities connect the dots between his projects, each video is different and a product of the stellar combination of the right artist, the right lighting, and maybe most importantly - the right feel. Growing up in a multi-cultural sphere, dictated by several international moves, led to an open-mindedness and an adaptability which did not hurt his transition into film. Surfing was the context which facilitated his portal in, and although he spent more time on the beach than in the water, the education he received, through direct exposure shooting his friends, was invaluable. His photography interest and experience developed further when he settled in Chicago, and came into Kanye West's orbit. Soon after, he started shooting music videos for a dossier for artists which continues to expand, and includes The Black Eyed Peas, Common, Seal, Bruno Mars, Foals, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Dua Lipa and Kendrick Lamar. For his work on Swim Good and Mercy, which feature Frank Ocean and Kanye West, respectively, Nabil received 3 VMA nominations, including Best Direction in a Video and Best Hip Hop Video for the latter. Among his feature films are the Ugandan breakdancing documentary, Bouncing Cats, and the gut-wrenching exploration of trauma - Gully - which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 and stars Charlie Plummer, Amber Heard, Jacob Latimore, Terrence Howard and John Corbett. In our conversation, we discussed the kernels of his film beginnings; working with actors like Willem Dafoe and Don Cheadle; collaborating with friends like John Legend; upcoming music video and narrative concepts he is developing; and a memorable encounter with Snoop Dogg.Opening Credits: HoliznaPATREON - Green Again ( LoFi) I CC BY-NC-ND 4.0; Anitek - Gnats I CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 US.
