Her way with words led her to success as a freelance writer and, eventually, as a corporate executive. Wherever she went, her work was driven by her love for meaningful connection. In 2000, after a memorable encounter with an 80-year-old woman, Jenney was inspired to help elevate the advice, stories, and hearts of the wise women around her. Over the course of eighteen years, she interviewed, came to love, and wrote about six women—collecting precious voices that became the chorus of her first book, Before I Leave. While visiting Selma, Alabama, the hometown of one of her subjects, Jenney met former mayor George Evans . . . who had a story to tell of his own. Their fast friendship charted a path toward Jenney's second book, Selma's Mayor. A mix of memoir and nonfiction writing, Jenney seamlessly weaves Evans' historic leadership with its modern-day impacts. Although Evans passed before the project was completed, his story is told with the heart and attention to detail that only comes through true friendship and admiration. When she's not writing, Jenney enjoys traveling far and wide with her partner, caring for her beloved greyhound and adorable chihuahua, and fishing—either alone at a city lake or with anyone who can show her a new spot! She also is sure to set aside time for her most favorite pastimes: spending time with her chidren, grandchildren, and friends, and reading.     About Your Host, Jim Hunt: Welcome to the “Building Amazing Cities and Towns Podcast” … The podcast for Mayors, Council Members, Managers, Staff and anyone who is interested in building an Amazing City.   Your host is Jim Hunt, the author of “Bottom Line Green, How American Cities are Saving the Planet and Money Too” and his latest book, “The Amazing City - 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City”   Jim is also the former President of the National League of Cities, 27 year Mayor, Council Member and 2006 Municipal Leader of the Year by American City and County Magazine.   Today, Jim speaks to 1000's of local government officials each year in the US and abroad.   Jim also consults with businesses that are bringing technology and innovation to local government.   Amazing City Resources:   Buy Jim's Popular Books: ·       The Entrepreneurial City: Building Smarter Governments through Entrepreneurial Thinking:   https://www.amazingcities.org/copy-of-the-amazing-city   ·       The Amazing City: 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City:   https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/the-amazing-city-7-steps-to-creating-an-amazing-city   ·       Bottom Line Green: How America's Cities and Saving the Planet (And Money Too)  https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/bottom-line-green-how-america-s-cities-are-saving-the-planet-and-money-too   FREE White Paper: ·       “10 Steps to Revitalize Your Downtown”  www.AmazingCities.org/10-Steps   Hire Jim to Speak at Your Next Event: ·       Tell us about your event and see if dates are available at www.AmazingCities.org/Speaking   Hire Jim to Consult with Your City or Town: ·       Discover more details at https://www.amazingcities.org/consulting   Discuss Your Business Opportunity/Product to Help Amazing Cities: ·       Complete the form at https://www.amazingcities.org/business-development   A Special Thanks to Bearing Advisors for the support of this podcast:  www.BearingAdvisors.Net

Samantha Knox put away her childish fantasies of archaeological adventure the day her father didn't return home from the Great War, retreating to the safety of the antique bookshop where she works. But when a mysterious package arrives with a damaged diary inside, Sam's peaceful life is obliterated. Ruthless men intent on reclaiming the diary are after Sam, setting her and her best friend, along with her childhood crush, on a high-stakes adventure that lands them in the green hills outside Dublin, Ireland. Here they discover an ancient order with a dark purpose - to perform an occult ritual that will raise the Specter Queen, the Celtic goddess of vengeance and death, to bring about a war unlike any the world has ever seen. To stop them, Sam must solve a deviously complex cipher - one that will lead her on a treasure hunt to discover the ancient relic at the heart of the ritual: a bowl carved from the tree of life. Will she find the bowl and stop the curse of the Specter Queen, or will the ancient order bring about the end of the world?

Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box

“Don't let the tech stop you like it stopped me for a long time.” - Sarah  I knew I wanted to start a subscription box. I dreamed about it every night. I planned out all the boxes, knowing exactly what I'd give my subscribers. And exactly how much they'd love it. Yet, it took me 18 months before I launched my subscription box. What held me back? The tech.  Tech holds SO MANY of us back. It's the number one stumbling block for members inside Launch Your Box. And I get it. But I want to help you get past that roadblock. The best way to do that? Knowledge!  I brought Nicole onto the podcast today to talk to us about what you need from a tech standpoint to start your subscription box. Nicole is one of our tech gurus inside Launch Your Box. She does SUCH a great job breaking things down and making them simple. Today, Nicole is talking to us about Shopify.  Shopify is an e-commerce platform specifically created for selling products online. Shopify is Nicole's number one choice for new subscription box owners for three reasons.  It allows you to have your own platform - this means it will work for you NOW, when you're new, and LATER when you've grown and are ready to scale.  Shopify is built for e-commerce. You don't have to patch things together or design workarounds. Shopify is already set up to do what you need it to do.  Shopify integrates with subscription boxes with easy-to-use apps.  You will need to add an app to Shopify in order to run recurring payments. Nicole recommends Paywhirl. She raved about their customer service and new features that make it even easier to use.  Shopify is a budget-friendly option at only $29/month and is truly user-friendly. Many members of Launch Your Box have successfully created their subscription box websites using Shopify.  Because she believes in Shopify so strongly and is so dedicated to the members of Launch Your Box, Nicole developed a training course specifically for us called Shopify Simplified. This self-paced course guides you through everything you need to get the tech side of your subscription box up and running in only eight weeks. Note: you can - and people do - work through it faster!  Nicole and I also talked briefly about two other pieces of tech to have in place. You need a CRM or customer relationship management system. We recommend Klaviyo - it is the BEST for managing email lists and maintaining connections with your audience. Klaviyo also now offers SMS which allows you to take full advantage of all the benefits of text marketing. And for shipping? It's Shipstation all the way. They make it sooo easy. My shipping process is streamlined and efficient. With one push of a button, all my shipping labels print out.   Join me for this episode as Nicole takes the fear and mystery out of tech. This is a part of your business that is too important not to pay attention to. And your subscription box dreams are too important to let tech slow you down or stop you from moving ahead. Nicole is here to help. Angelique Jenney, PhD, RSW, is an Assistant Professor and the Wood's Homes Research Chair in Children's Mental Health in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. Dr. Jenney has over 20 years' experience in intervention and prevention services within the child protection, children's mental health and violence against women sectors. Dr. Jenney's research and program development has been devoted to understanding and responding to the impact of violence in families. Find a recent blog post Angelique wrote on stigma and children's mental health access and experiences. We discuss how stigma is a barrier for children and adolescents accessing early interventions for mental health--despite its potential to change the trajectory of their lives. Mental health stigma contributes to bullying and social isolation of children, and blaming of parents. We discuss stigma, fear, stereotypes and misinformation toward parents and families with children with mental health issues. Angelique shares how we need more dialogue about complicated feelings (and the magic of Inside Out!) and how we can use our range of emotions to know ourselves. Angelique recommends saying yes to opportunities that you may be afraid of, and being ok with being uncomfortable so we don't reject everything that we are afraid of. We also invite dream future podcast guests: Barack Obama, Dan Levy and Bruce Springsteen.Episode hosted by Dr. Carmen Logie. From early on, host Ralph Baxter knew co-founders Ian Nelson and Chris Wedgeworth were onto something when they developed a legal training model with proven educational techniques pioneered by Coursera, Khan Academy, and Duolingo. In this episode, Baxter talks to Nelson about the development of Hotshot and its practical uses by law schools and law firms. Since its early pilots more than eight years ago, Hotshot has developed a library of 200 topics in corporate practice and business acumen. Hotshot hires experienced lawyers to develop the substantive content for training and hires professional actors for the video presentations, which are generally delivered in short, easily digestible segments. Guest Sara Dana shares the perspective of Harvard Law, which gave early feedback about the product and has used Hotshot to provide students added learning resources since 2017. Morrison Foerster partner Rick Jenney shows how his firm has used Hotshot to train new lawyers and boost training resources for junior attorneys. Especially valuable is the ability to use the on-demand library to flip the classroom. Before a firm-led training, lawyers get video homework so everyone is on the same page. Jenney says this approach has improved in-firm training. Similarly, Dana notes that the students using Hotshot are familiar with video tutorials and have embraced the product because, like so much of what makes on-demand culture popular, “It’s really well done; it’s exactly what they need; they can access it when they need it.” Ian Nelson is co-founder of Hotshot. Sara Dana is the communication director for career services at Harvard Law School. Rick Jenney is a partner at Morrison and Foerster. Special thanks to our sponsors, Logikcull and Acumass.

Try to reinforce a routine to help keep young people grounded – have meals together without electronics, or take a walk around the block as a family. * Sleep – Several studies show that lack of sleep leads to anxiety, depression, inability to concentrate. Try to keep the electronics out of the bedroom at night so that kids can get a restful night’s sleep. * Listen – Everyone knows teens don’t communicate much anyway. But try to pay close attention and listen to the little pieces that sneak out. Validate what comes out of their mouth. Try going for a car ride to get more out of them. More money is NOT the answer to your happiness problem. It doesn't matter what your background. You may have come from a very poor upbringing. You may know the pain and restriction of poverty like nobody else. From that vantage point, it really does seem that money would make you happy. But the presenter on this episode of Freedom Fast Lane, Mark Jenney, would tell you that it doesn't. He actually grew up in poverty and thought fulfillment and happiness would come when he got rich - which he did. And he discovered that happiness was NOT in the money. You can hear his story and what he emphasizes more than money, on this episode. It doesn't even take a high school diploma to be successful in business. The traditional education model that is prevalent in the United States emphasizes graduation from High School as a step toward success. Don't misunderstand, a high school education is a good thing - even today's guest, who was a high school dropout believes so. But he is living proof that a high school diploma is not necessary to be successful in business. In fact, he was running a 6 figure business during his senior year of high school and didn't have time to attend class. That is why he dropped out. You can hear Jenney's story on this episode of Freedom Fast Lane. The only person who will determine your success is you. A high school teacher once told Jenney that he would never amount to anything if he didn't pay attention in class and learn the things he was being taught. But he was determined that those words would never come true. He learned that nobody can determine your success except you. Jenny shares his story and how he became a success in spite of the negative words that were spoken into his life, but he goes on to talk about why his success didn't bring happiness or fulfillment. You'll want to hear this episode. It's a great summary of why success alone is not what matters. Why fulfillment and happiness are more important than exotic success. There is nothing wrong with making more money. But today's guest is eager to make you understand that you want more money AND happiness and fulfillment. The two don't necessarily go hand in hand. You'll hear Jenney's story about how he realized that his huge bank account was keeping him from happiness, why he walked away from a company that was incredibly successful but that he couldn't be proud of, and what he's done to change his focus and establish a greater sense of happiness and fulfillment in his own life. It's all from his Freedom Fast Lane LIVE 2015 presentation - and you get to hear the entire thing on this episode. If you are not finding purpose in your business this is the time to pivot.   Focus on contribution and help other people get what they want - and you'll get the happiness you're seeking. That's what Jenney has discovered as he's evaluated his life, his success, and his way forward. He wants to make a difference in the world, not just make more money. It's vital to him that what he does for a living makes a difference to humanity. Listen to this episode to learn the 4 questions you can ask yourself to evaluate the true value of what your business is accomplishing and make the pivot that can change everything. Outline Of This Great Episode [0:04] Ryan's introduction of this episode. [4:29] Ryan's introduction of Mark Jenney from Jenney's keynote presentation FFLL 2015. [7:07] Why time is your most valuable asset. [11:10] Jenney's experience in business. [13:40] Growing up in a storage room in an industrial garage and the motivation it provided. [17:06] Why Jenney didn't graduate High School and why he'd do anything to make money. [21:17] Why the only person who will determine your success is you. [25:42] Why the fun, exotic stuff doesn't really matter in the end. [31:01] The successful business Jenney walked away from. [34:40] 4 specific question that can change the path you are on. [40:31] Why it's hard to find happiness and fulfillment when you're a slave to money. [45:08] What you really want instead of more money and how to get it. [52:31] Your invite to Freedom Fast Lane LIVE 2016. Every entrepreneur or business owner dreams of making millions, of having that break out product or service that brings in loads of cash and takes a market by storm. But most don't realize what Mark Jenney discovered: Once you have that kind of success you still don't have happiness. As counterintuitive as that may sound, Mark speaks powerfully about it on this episode. His responses to Ryan's questions from this Q&A session at the 2015 Freedom Fast Lane LIVE event open the door to a challenge for all of us: Are you working to get or working to give? Your answer could make all the difference in your business and your life. Dropping a product that brings in $80K per day. Yes, per day. As his business efforts were becoming more and more profitable Mark Jenney was experiencing lots of inner turmoil. His product sales were skyrocketing, one product alone bringing in $80K per day, but he wasn't feeling comfortable about the business he had built. He wasn't feeling good about the products he was selling. A conviction was growing inside of him that told him that he was building a business to get and wasn't contributing anything to the world. That's when he made the decision to drop that product and pivot his business. It's an amazing story that led to even greater success, so be sure you listen. All the success in the world still doesn't bring you happiness. It's a reasonable assumption that having greater success will translate into a greater sense of personal fulfillment and happiness. But that's not what Mark Jenney discovered. The money and the great things that came as a result of it were fun to have, but that only lasted a short time. He wound up feeling unfulfilled in short order. The lesson he learned was life changing: When you focus on giving, everything you need comes as a result and you wind up feeling fulfilled and happy as well. Mark says if he could have learned this lesson much earlier he would have avoided many years of empty frustration and also would have had the opportunity to add more value to the world for a longer period of time. Listen to Mark's advice. He's got lots of great thoughts to share, on this episode. Is the best way to contribute to the world by building a business? In this Q&A session from Freedom Fast Lane LIVE 2015, Ryan Daniel Moran asked his good friend, Mark Jenney, if he believes that building a business is the best way to add maximum contribution to the world. Mark's answer was wise and refreshing. He said it is for him, and for some people, but not for everyone. That's world's different from things you hear out in the entrepreneurial world today and a great reason to listen to this episode. Sometimes a fresh perspective like this is all you need to prompt you to your own next great step forward. Those businesses focused on getting typically don't last very long. As Ryan and Mark chat about the difference between building a business to get (money) and building a business to give (value) on this episode, Ryan makes a great observation. Of all the businesses he's seen grow to great success, the ones that were solely focused on extracting money from people are the same ones that only lasted for a handful of years. The businesses that had a bigger “why” behind what their existence are the ones that stood the test of time, the ones that continue to thrive and build upon their successes. And not coincidentally, they are also the businesses that have the biggest impact on the lives of their customers or clients in a positive way. Outline Of This Great Episode [0:05] Ryan's introduction of Mark Jenny and this episode of Freedom Fast Lane. [2:00] How you can get involved in the next Freedom Fast Lane LIVE event. [2:39] The transition from working to get TO giving as much as possible. [6:30] Where the diminishing returns began for Mark. [7:50] If Mark could have made his pivot earlier, how would it have changed his life? [9:30] Is business the best way to contribute to society? [11:07] How becoming a husband has impacted Mark's approach to what he does. [13:28] The shift from being the primary force in his business to empowering others to run it. [16:00] Intentionally dropping a product that sold $80K per day. [18:33] The comparison of business lifespans: those getting VS those getting. [20:01] Ryan's summary and thoughts on Mark's comments. [20:40] Get into the FFL book club. [21:00] How to connect to people who are doing great things. Action Steps From This Episode FOR GREATER SUCCESS: Start out by focusing on what you are giving to the world, your customers, and society at large. When you set your mind to add something important to the world, getting what you need comes by default. FOR PRODUCTIVITY: Work to build teams who can help you extract yourself from the processes of your business. That enables you to fuel the vision for what your business is doing. FOR GETTING STARTED: If you feel like you're supposed to be doing something greater with your life, take the leap. Do something to get started, to start discovering what you're made for, why you're here. The sooner you begin the sooner you can get to the point of that greater purpose.
