Fugees. Flack. Lieberman? The wonderfully talented yet woefully unheralded singer-songwriter Lori Lieberman explains how she conceived, co-wrote and was the first to record the '70s (and '90s) classic "Killing Me Softly With His Song" — without ever getting a songwriting credit, and while under the thumb of a domineering management team that tried to suppress her story and her career. In this interview, Lori and I talk about her early years as a recording and touring artist in the '70s, her return to what is now a thriving music career after a long time away, and her extraordinary voice, which, after many years in the shadows, is finally being heard. [JON's PICK] When you think of mid-90s hip hop, a few things probably come to mind... "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio, Wu Tang's "36 Chambers" (along with their numerous projects), various Beastie Boys hits, "Waterfalls" by TLC, A Tribe Called Quest... "Jock Jams"... and Fugee's sophomore album, "The Score." From "Ready or Not" to "Fu-Gee-La" to their Grammy winning cover of "Killing Me Softly With His Song," this album is full of hits and had a big impact on the hip hop and pop scene. Coming from a growing tradition of strong female MCs, Lauryn Hill wasn't pulling any punches with her lyrical approach. She is still considered one of the best female rappers of all time and on top of that, she could sing like an angel. With both of those talents at their disposal, along with legendary Haitian-American producing cousins, Wyclef Jean & Pras Michel, Fugees (named after a derogatory term for Haitian-American refugees) were perfectly poised to rule the airwaves for the rest of the 90s; but there were problems brewing in Fu-Gee-La. During the production of the album, Lauryn and Wyclef were in the midst of a heated affair, which, while contributing to the raw emotion and creativity of the album, ultimately led to their downfall. Much like Fleetwood Mac, they fell apart. However, unlike the members of Fleetwood Mac, they have all had a hard time since their success with "The Score," with Lauryn jailed briefly for tax evasion, Wyclef being accused of mismanaging a charity, and Pras being investigated for suspicious political campaign contributions. Ironically, the feds coming after them for white collar crimes that are often swept under the rug (for certain... lighter skinned peoples), kind of proves some of the paranoia they expressed in the song "The Mask:" "Put the mask upon the face just to make the next day. Feds be hawking me, jokers be stalking me...Hit the streets for relief, I bumped into the Feds, I got kidnapped they took me to D.C... everybody wear the mask but how long will it last?" Roberta Flack y su extraordinario “Killing Me Softly With His Song”. En 1983 grabaron juntos, consiguiendo el éxito «Tonight, I Celebrate My Love». Otra que no podemos dejar pasar es “On The Radio” Inevitablemente tenemos que oir, aunque sea un poco “She Works hard for the money”. The Jackson 5: "Never Can Say Goodbye" ("Nunca puedo decir adiós"). You Know I'm No Good

DJ Kool Herc (Hercules), founding father of hip hop.   46.    It's summer time of 1973 in the Bronx NY.   47.    In the recreation room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, a HISTORIC party jumps off. - And hip hop is born!   48.    Bio: Kool Herc was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, moved to NYC as a teen and started spinning records at parties with his dad's PA system.   49.    He was deep into Reggae and he styled himself like a Jamaican “selector” (DJ) and did a lot of “toasting” (talking/chanting) over the instrumentals.   50.    But his real genius was paying attention to the crowds. He said a lot of DJ's back then would put on a record and go smoke a cigarette.   51.    He watched what got the crowd going and noticed hat it was the instrumental bridge, or drum breaks, that was hot with the dancers.   52.    His SIGNATURE move and GROUNDBREAKING contribution was to use the two turntables of a regular DJ setup, NOT to switch between songs, BUT switch back and forth between the break beats and keep the crowds moving!   53.    His homie, Coke La Rock, would get on the mic and do shout outs ("so and so is in the house!"), do call-and-response phrases (yes, yes, y'all - you don't stop, ...just throw your hands in the air), and do catchy "poems" (Hotel, motel, you don't tell, we won't   54.    tell)   55.    Herc had been working on it this new style for almost a year, but that summertime party in 73 was his breakout moment.   56.    After that, the crowds got too big for the rec room and he started throwing jams in the park. Those crowds where bigger than some at the clubs and that's where all four elements of hip hop would really come together. (Dj'ing, MC'ing, dancing, and graffiti)    57.    He got stabbed at a party just a few years later, and while he was sidelined, his 2 homies and "understudies" took over hip hop, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash!    58.    Hip Hop basically started by presenting a party on wax.   59.    Question: How has partying changed? (i.e., dancing, music, sex, drugs, socializing, violence, etc...)   60.    Final thoughts: Kool Herc continues be an undervalued personality. He deserves WAY more credit.   61.    Music Scene:   62.    Pop Singles   63.    #1 - Tony Orlando and Dawn, Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree   64.    #3 - Roberta Flack, Killing Me Softly With His Song   65.    #4 - Marvin Gaye, Let’s Get It On   66.    #8 - Billy Preston, Will It Go Round In Circles   67.    #10 - Diana Ross, Touch Me In The Morning   68.    #15 - Billy Paul, Me And Mrs. Jones   69.    #17 - Dobie Gray, Drift Away   70.    #19 - Stevie Wonder, You Are The Sunshine Of My Life   71.    #21 - Isley Bros., That Lady   72.    #22 - Sylvia, Pillow Talk   73.    #26 - Stevie Wonder, Superstition   74.    #32 - O’Jays, Love Train   75.    #33 - Barry White, I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More   76.    Vote:   77.    Jan - 360 Degrees of Billy Paul, Billy Paul   78.    Feb -Talking Book, Stevie Wonder   79.    Feb - The World Is a Ghetto, War   80.    Apr - Wattstax: The Living Word, Soundtrack / Various artists   81.    Apr - Neither One of Us, Gladys Knight & the Pips   82.    May - Masterpiece, The Temptations   83.    May - Spinners, The Spinners   84.    Jun - Birth Day, New Birth   85.    Jun - Call Me, Al Green   86.    Jun - Live at the Sahara Tahoe, Isaac Hayes   87.    Jul - I've Got So Much to Give, Barry White   88.    Jul - Back to the World, Curtis Mayfield   89.    Aug - Fresh, Sly and the Family Stone   90.    Aug - Touch Me in the Morning, Diana Ross   91.    Sep - Innervisions, Stevie Wonder   92.    Sep - Deliver the Word, War   93.    Sep - Let's Get It On, Marvin Gaye   94.    Dec - Imagination, Gladys Knight & the Pips   95.    Key Artist: Gladys Maria Knight, aka The Empress of Soul (@29): Singer, song writer, actress.   96.    Born and raised in ATL   97.    Started touring with the Pips at 16yrs old, signed with Motown at 22, and started dropping hits:   98.    "Every Beat of My Heart/I Heard It Through the Grapevine/If I Were Your Woman   99.    In 1973 she left Motown (Former Motown artists where EVERYWHERE) and blew up!   100.    They landed 4 straight #1 Soul Lps between 1973 and 1974   101.    Neither One of Us/Imagination/Claudine/I Feel a Song   102.    Gladys will tell you that Diana Ross, kicked her off a tour once because the crowds were feeling her more and that The Boss felt overshadowed.   103.    Some people called her the true successor to Aretha.   104.    Question: What was Glady's biggest hurdle: Too nice, Diana, song material, or a CRAZY personal life? "There's more to life than that.   113.    Innervisions (16th studio LP) was where he stopped being merely a "boy" genius.   114.    "It is the album that best celebrates his musical maturity and completes the transition from Little Stevie Wonder to the grown-up artist with an active imagination and burning social conscience. Coming just nine months after Talking Book, Innervisions is Wonder at  115.    the absolute peak of his powers, a 23-year-old man with the world at his fingertips." - BBC Review   116.    Question: Bigger impact, Stevie or James? 1954: Five Congressmen Shot by Puerto Rican Nationalists

On this date in 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire in the House of Representatives chamber in the United States Capitol building. Here are some things you may not have known about it. The Puerto Rican Nationalist Party was founded in the 1920s in an attempt to secure the island’s independence from the United States. The U.S. had gained possession of Puerto Rico as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898, which ended the Spanish-American War. The U.S. also acquired Guam, the Philippines and Cuba as part of the treaty. An amendment to the U.S. declaration of war prevented the U.S. from keeping Cuba. The Puerto Rican nationalists argued that their island wasn’t the property of Spain in the first place, so the Spanish couldn’t give the island to the United States.  In 1950, Puerto Rico was made a “Free Associated State,” meaning the people of Puerto Rico could elect their own governor and legislators in a manner similar to full-fledged American states. The U.S. government retained responsibility for defense and foreign relations. In October, the U.S. helped the Puerto Rican National Guard put down a nationalist uprising, which resulted in 28 fatalities. Two days later, two nationalists attempted to assassinate President Harry Truman in Washington, D.C. The attack was unsuccessful, but a White House police officer and one of the attackers were killed. In 1952, 82 percent of Puerto Rican voters decided to accept the new status as a commonwealth. The only other option provided on the ballot was for maintaining direct American rule. Independence was not an option. On March 1, 1954, Lolita Lebrón, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Irvin Flores and Andres Figueroa Cordero smuggled semi-automatic pistols into the visitors’ gallery above the House of Representatives chamber in the U.S. Capitol.  The group recited the Lord’s Prayer, Lebrón stood up and shouted “¡Viva Puerto Rico Libre!” or “Long live a free Puerto Rico” and unfurled a Puerto Rican flag. The group then opened fire. Five congressmen were shot: Alvin Bentley of Michigan, Clifford Davis of Tennessee, Ben F. Jensen of Iowa, George Hyde Fallon of Maryland and Kenneth A. Roberts of Alabama. Bentley was the most severely injured, having been shot in the chest. Lebrón said she fired her gun into the ceiling. It’s reported that Figueroa Cordero’s gun jammed. Cancel Miranda claimed to have fired most of the shots and injured all of the congressmen.  The nationalists were immediately arrested. After her arrest, Lebrón said, “I did not come to kill anyone, I came to die for Puerto Rico.” All of the wounded congressmen survived their injuries. The four nationalists were convicted of attempted murder and conspiracy. Each of them except Cancel Miranda were given 76-year sentences. Cancel Miranda, who was considered to be the primary shooter, was sentenced to 85 years in prison and sent to Alcatraz. Figueroa Cordero was released from prison in 1978, the others were pardoned in 1979. Cancel Miranda is the only surviving participant of  the plot. He’s 86 years old and lives in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.  Since 1967, there have been four referendums on the status of Puerto Rico. Maintaining the commonwealth and pursuing statehood have been the top vote getters. Another referendum is scheduled for June 11, 2017. The only options on the ballot will be statehood or independence/free association. Our question: What are the names of the other three major islands in the Greater Antilles? Today is Ash Wednesday, World Civil Defense Day, Independence Day in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Heroes’ Day in Paraguay. It’s unofficially National Pig Day, National Fruit Compote Day, and World Math Day. It’s the birthday of bandleader Glenn Miller, who was born in 1904; musician Harry Belafonte, who is 90; and actor and director Ron Howard, who is 63. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1973, the top song in the U.S. was “Killing Me Softly With His Song” by Roberta Flack. The No. 1 movie was “Walking Tall,” while the novel “Jonathan Livingston Seagul” by Richard Bach topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.  With as often as they’re mentioned, Richard Bach and James Michener should be paying for advertising on this show. Charles Ira Fox (born October 30, 1940) is an American composer for film and television. His most heard compositions are probably the "love themes" (the sunshine pop musical backgrounds which accompanied every episode of the 1970s ABC-TV show Love, American Style), and the dramatic theme music to ABC's Wide World of Sports and the original Monday Night Football, as well as his (and Norman Gimbel's) Grammy winning hit song "Killing Me Softly With His Song". He has composed music for Love Boat, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Scarface, 9 to 5, and Barbarella. Introduced by Allyn Ferguson.
