. .  Invitado: Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez Web y Tienda: La Borinqueña Instagram: @LaBorinquenaComics Presentación en Seattle: @GatesFoundation . In 1950, President Harry Truman ordered US troops to the Korean peninsula to help the South Koreans repel the invading North Korean People's Army, which was supported by the communist regimes of the Soviet Union and China. One of the regiments shipped overseas to fight was the 65th Infantry Regiment, the Borinqueneers, made up of soldiers from Puerto Rico. In Korea, the Borinqueneers served heroically, despite harsh conditions and racist treatment. Joining me in this episode to help us learn more about the 65th Infantry Regiment is writer Talia Aikens-Nuñez, author of the young adult book Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War.  Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Today on Boston Public Radio: We opened the show by taking our listener's calls to ask if they miss a traditional New England winter as we experience another season with lower-than-average snow totals. Dr. Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist and researcher at Harvard University, came on to discuss the findings from the longest-ever study on happiness. The study found that investment in relationships with friends, partners and coworkers paid dividends for long-term health and happiness. GBH News' Callie Crossley talked about a GBH News story featuring a man who says that the Worcester police has pulled him over in his car more than 70 times. She also weighed in on the mixed reactions to "The Embrace" statue one week after its unveiling. She also criticized the decision by Florida's state education department to ban the teaching of an Advanced Placement course on African-American history. Crossley is the host of "Under the Radar with Callie Crossley", which you can catch Sunday nights on 89-7 at 6:00p.m. She's also the host of “Basic Black,” which airs Fridays on TV at 7:30, you can also hear her “Callie Commentaries” on Mondays for GBH's Morning Edition. Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez is the comic book artist behind the best-selling series "La Borinqueña", about a Puerto Rican superhero who battles climate doom. He explained the reason for launching her story, and how he broke through some resistance in mainstream publishing to centering stories around characters of color. He also talked about his close friendship with Rosario Dawson. Miranda-Rodriguez's work is now on display at Boston University. NBC Boston's Sue O'Connell discussed the reports that Republican Congressman used to be a drag queen in Brazil, and how his denial adds to the mountain of his existing lies. She also talked about the prosecutorial strategy behind charging Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly shooting and killing a crew member on set of "Rust"with a prop gun he says he didn't know was loaded with live rounds. Then she commented on the media treatment of New Zealand Prime Minist Jacinda Ardern following her announcment that she won't be seeking reelection. Patricia-Maria Weinmann and Greg Smucker, the co-artistic directors behind the Boston Opera Collaborative, joined to discuss their new "Opera Bites" series. The prgoram offers seven brand-new 10-minute opera perofrmances to provide an entry-point for people unfamiliar with the medium. Then some members of their company performed a few songs. Then we ended the show by having a call-in segment where we asked our listeners how they feel about drivers who travel too slowly in the fast lane. The discussion comes as South Carolina considers a law that could raise the financial penalties for people who don't move out of the fast lane.

HOY (2022) es una canción MUY HERMOSA y MUY PATRIÓTICA. AYER (1937) fue una canción MUY VALIENTE y MUY ATREVIDA … ¿Preciosa? Jacenta L. Irlanda, Diamanto Sala, and host R. Alan Brooks all have something in common: A love of comics from a very young age. All three found escape and joy in reading and creating comics as children and that love persists today, though with a more nuanced approach, especially due to their respective jobs and identities. In Jacenta's case, she incorporates comics into her art therapy practice in order to help clients access their emotional trauma in a safe manner. For Diamanto, their job as a sex worker has enhanced their desire to see themes of justice in the comics they consume. For both of them, meaningful representation—not tokenization—both on the page and behind the pen, are of paramount importance. In this special two-for-one episode, the group discusses these themes, plus the pressure to conform their artistic style to others', advice for receiving harsh feedback, and more. This episode contains mature language and content.Links mentioned in this episode:La Borinqueña — Puerto Rican superhero Jacenta mentions“Steven Universe,” “She-Ra,” “The Owl House” — Cartoons with queer representation Diamanto and Alan mentionThe Burning Metronome by R. Listen to learn more about how Edgardo infused his values into his work and gave many different types of Puerto Ricans much needed representation in his comics. If you're wondering just how much of yourself you should put into your intellectual property, you need to listen to Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez' amazing story. You might be afraid to truly put yourself, your identity, or your story out there in your intellectual property because you worry it could hurt your chances of success, but the opposite is true, especially when you are focused on what the application will be. Today's episode features Edgardo's story of how he infused his identity as a Nuyorican into the hit comic series La Borinqueña. It all started as a costume idea for the Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC, and now is not only a comic book series, but a symbol of social justice for Puerto Ricans. He self published the series, and due to its success, has raised nearly $250,000 for grassroots organizations in Puerto Rico. This inspirational story shows that authenticity, when combined with strong values can work! It also shows how much representation matters. This is just part 1 of my interview with Edgardo. Artist-Creator-Producer-Director-Entrepreneur-Activist-Storyteller is as close as I can get to an adequate “title” for Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez, winner of the Comic-Con International 2019 Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award. In this episode of I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, I talk to the mastermind behind La Borinqueña, aka Marisol, a college student from New York City who becomes a superhero on a mission to save her beloved island of Puerto Rico and fight for environmental justice. As the Founder and Creative Director of Brooklyn-based studio Somos Arte (We Are Art), Edgardo has been producing original content and curating art exhibitions for decades. His mastery of storytelling and his advocacy on issues affecting Puerto Rico, from colonialism to protecting its natural resources, ignited the creation of La Borinqueña in 2016. In 2021, he introduces a new character, a Dominican Chinese college student who becomes the Latino Asian LGBTQ superhero named Lúz. And the commitment is real: 100% of the proceeds of La Borinqueña comic book series go towards furthering hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

This episode of the podcast is all about the positivity to come out of Comic-Con's 50th Anniversary. Starting with a company called Magic Wheelchair. A company started by a father of 5 who's first born was diagnosed with (SMA) Spinal Muscular Atrophy at 9 months old. In 2008 he was inspired to create a costumed designed around his son's wheel chair after asking his son what he wanted to be for Halloween. His son said a pirate and that's where the company took off, designing wheelchairs for families free of charge and bringing attention as well as making a kid feel a little bit more normal about their disease. Our main story is about Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, the owner and creator of the "La Borinqueña" comic. With a young comic starting in 2016 already an iconic figure for Puerto Rico, Edgardo was given the humanitarian award for using his platform to combat injustices done to the Puerto Rican people as well as bring attention to the conditions the island is in, especially after the tragedy of hurricane Maria. Edgardo teamed up with DC comics only after 2 years to help bring more awareness to rebuilding Puerto Rico with his comic "Ricanstruction", where La Borinqueña is joined with iconic DC heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman who help rebuild the Island that Puerto Ricans love so much. Before you do anything else today, go to this website and get yourself these amazing comic books: https://www.la-borinquena.com/ As a female person of color, I rarely saw myself represented in the content I consumed growing up, and I definitely do not remember ever seeing a Superhero that ever looked like ME. This is why La Borinqueña is so important to the younger generations of latinas.Graphic novelist Edgardo Miranda and a number of incredibly talented graphic artists from Puerto Rico and the US, worked on a comic book that raised funds for Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria called RICANstruction - collaborating with DC Comics to raise awareness about the needs of the island.La Borinqueña is a Superhero that has inspired and raised close to a quarter of a million dollars for grassroots organizations on the islands. Yet her impact reaches far beyond this fact. Because children in our community can see themselves in a way they haven’t ever seen themselves before. What I learned when I sat down with Edgardo will leave you inspired. And the conversation will also push you to ask yourself: What does it mean to have real representation, and original stories, in the content you consume on a daily basis? And beyond that, to ask who are the gatekeepers that determine whether you see yourself in the content that you pay for?One of the amazing things about this comic series is that Edgardo was able to bring in DC Comics … from Wonder Woman to Superman, Batman and Green Lantern. We discussed that all it takes to raise awareness for the island is the belief that you can contribute, through your voice, your skills, your networks… through action. There are so many ways each of us can positively impact an island that experienced the worst hurricane in their history. The discussion with Edgardo covers many things but we started with the most looming crisis – the Puerto Rican debt crisis. He shares that his first comic with La Borinqueña was focused on being able to digest how the debt crisis is impacting the people and allow those most affected to have a voice, to counter the fact that the island’s residents are US citizens and yet do not have voting representation in Congress.Edgardo also discusses that the public needs to better understand Puerto Rico’s struggle under colonialism. And knowing Puerto Rico’s history is key. History is an important aspect of the comics that Edgardo felt was needed to fully capture what it means to be Puerto Rican and American. We spoke of the ability of La Borinqueña to tap into popular culture to tell Puerto Rican stories, and be a catalyst for more conversations. Edgardo noted that most comics are written by white men and the narratives therefore pursue white male fulfillment in villians that are bullies to be defeated. But Edgardo asks: “To tell our stories of people of color, what are we going to do differently? Are we going to perpetuate the same traps?”Edgardo notes that his upbringing was full of strong women who mentored him closely, and which had a huge influence on his creation of La Borinqueña Comics. He states his activism is centered on the issues that affect marginalized groups who have been discriminated against. We also spoke about the economic condition and climate change effects on Puerto Rico. The fact that the people of the islands have been working on borrowed money from the start.(Check out the episode on the Debt to learn about the historical economic justice issues affecting Puerto Rico here).Edgardo also shares what happened when Hurricane Maria hit and the circumstances around that tragic day that changed our lives. Edgardo spoke about being at a comic convention right after the Hurricane and worrying that it was inappropriate to be at this event given what was happening on the island. But ultimately many there described it as a therapeutic moment for all of them.We spoke also of the Puerto Ricans living in the US reali..
