Une question qui pourrait paraître totalement impensable, surréaliste, mais qui est bien au cœur des commentaires de la presse française ce matin. Hier, les événements se sont précipités dans l'enquête sur la mort de Quentin Deranque, ce militant nationaliste de 23 ans battu à mort jeudi dernier à Lyon. « Depuis plusieurs heures, elles étaient identifiées et surveillées par toute la police lyonnaise, relate Le Parisien. Neuf personnes ont été interpellées en fin de journée et six d'entre elles sont soupçonnées d'être en lien direct avec les faits ». Et parmi les interpellés, relève Le Monde, « figurent deux collaborateurs du député La France insoumise Raphaël Arnault. Et plusieurs des suspects font l'objet d'une fiche S pour radicalisation politique, en raison de leur appartenance au groupe antifasciste la Jeune Garde ». Résultat : le parti LFI, la France insoumise, « dans la tourmente », s'exclame le journal. LFI : « un rapport douteux avec la démocratie » Et Le Figaro de tirer à boulets rouges sur le leader du parti, Jean-Luc Mélenchon : « La violence qui a tué Quentin Deranque n'est pas résiduelle. Elle est permanente, souhaitée, soutenue par son clan pour conduire le pays au chaos, s'exclame le quotidien de droite. La stratégie de la tension théorisée par Jean-Luc Mélenchon est politique quand elle hystérise les débats jusque dans l'hémicycle de l'Assemblée nationale. Elle est physique quand elle se traduit par des opérations coup-de-poing, comme à Lyon. Elle est antisémite quand elle favorise les appels à l'intifada dans Paris ou quand elle laisse Rima Hassan cracher sa haine du sionisme dans les universités. (…) La France insoumise entretient un rapport douteux avec la démocratie, fulmine encore Le Figaro. Et l'indécence est totale lorsqu'on entend son "Lider Maximo" inverser la charge de l'accusation pour se placer en victime et faire de sa formation un mouvement persécuté ». « Le pire est à craindre »  Libération s'alarme : « La politique française au bord du précipice », constate le quotidien de gauche. « Le pire est à craindre pour l'avenir de la démocratie », poursuit-il. « La minute consensuelle de silence hier dans l'hémicycle n'est qu'un indécent trompe-l'œil alors que cette violence, telle une gangrène, menace notre vie politique ». « LFI est dans la tourmente », affirme également Libération. « En attendant de savoir s'ils seront judiciairement dévastateurs, les liens assumés entre LFI et les mouvements d'ultragauche sont politiquement signifiants. Ils disaient, avant le drame de Lyon, quelque chose de la nature politique du mouvement de Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Ils deviendront probablement impossibles à assumer pour une formation qui se dit progressiste, humaniste et assure refuser toute violence ». « Impasses mortifères » On revient au Monde qui s'inquiète également : « À un mois des élections municipales, à quatorze mois d'un scrutin présidentiel sur lequel plane la menace d'un succès de l'extrême droite, alors que l'exécutif est paralysé par la perte de sa majorité et que le Parlement offre trop souvent un spectacle de désordre, le drame de Lyon assombrit un peu plus le paysage politique et renforce la nécessité d'un sursaut démocratique. La rhétorique du "eux ou nous", la stratégie du chaos, encouragée par la brutalité des réseaux sociaux et l'immédiateté de l'information auprès d'une opinion publique émiettée, sont des impasses mortifères. Recourir à la violence, conclut Le Monde, c'est faire le jeu de ceux qui veulent abattre la démocratie, un idéal précisément conçu pour sortir les sociétés de la violence ». « Dangereuse mécanique » Enfin, ce commentaire à lire dans La Croix de la philosophe et psychanalyste Hélène L'Heuillet, autrice de Tu haïras ton prochain comme toi-même : « Quels que soient ses engagements politiques, à 23 ans, on ne doit surtout pas mourir, affirme la philosophe. J'ai pensé immédiatement à la mort de Clément Méric, ce militant d'extrême gauche décédé en 2013. Et mon autre réaction est l'inquiétude face à ce jeu de miroirs qui peut sembler sans fin et à ce qu'il porte en lui de risques de guerre civile. Inquiétude aussi pour notre débat politique, qui se trouve ainsi focalisé sur les extrêmes à la veille d'une échéance politique majeure. (…) Il est clair, conclut Hélène L'Heuillet, que la complaisance de La France insoumise envers l'antisémitisme, ou les discours de l'extrême droite contre les étrangers, peut enclencher cette dangereuse mécanique. Ce risque exige responsabilité et sang-froid de la part des gouvernants qui doivent jouer le rôle de tiers et avant tout calmer le jeu ».

« La violence politique jusqu'au meurtre. (…) La violence politique à son paroxysme », s'exclame Libération. L'indignation est générale dans le monde politique et médiatique après la mort de ce jeune de 23 ans, Quentin, militant d'extrême droite, battu à mort jeudi dernier à Lyon. « Les circonstances exactes de ce meurtre ne sont pas encore totalement établies, pointe Libération, mais tout indique qu'il est le résultat d'une rixe entre deux bandes rivales, l'une d'extrême droite, l'autre d'extrême gauche, en marge d'une conférence de l'eurodéputée LFI Rima Hassan à l'Institut d'études politiques de Lyon. (…) Ce qui est sûr, relève le quotidien de gauche, c'est que le climat insupportable d'outrance et d'intolérance dans lequel baigne depuis un certain temps la politique française ne peut qu'engendrer ce genre de drame en échauffant des esprits trop simples, de quelque bord qu'ils soient. (…) À un mois des élections municipales et près d'un an de la présidentielle, il faut garder à l'esprit, à chaque seconde, que la violence politique peut conduire à tuer. » « Un martyr de la liberté d'expression » Le Figaro dénonce pour sa part ce qu'il appelle « les fascistes de l'antifascisme » : « un “totalitarisme antifasciste“ était là à Lyon jeudi soir dans sa forme la plus sauvage, mais il plane dans l'atmosphère depuis trop longtemps comme un conformisme vénéneux, affirme le quotidien de droite. Une génération entière formée à déshumaniser tout ce qui s'approcherait de près ou de loin de “l'extrême droite“, un personnel politique qui par couardise donne le change, un clergé médiatique qui forge les anathèmes et à la fin, un gamin venu paisiblement protéger une banderole contre “l'islamo-gauchisme dans nos facs“ qui meurt sous un déchaînement de coups. (…) Quentin dans cette histoire n'est pas “un militant“ pris dans une “rixe“, dénonce encore Le Figaro, mais un martyr de la liberté d'expression que l'extrême gauche, aidée par trop de complices, veut remplacer par son hideuse loi de la meute. » Polarisation et radicalisation « Mourir pour un engagement politique, quel qu'il soit, l'idée est insupportable », soupire La Croix. « On est encore loin des affrontements minutieusement préparés dans les années 70 et 80 entre skins et antifas. Mais déjà, en 2013, la mort du militant d'extrême gauche Clément Méric sous les coups de militants de l'ultra-droite avait réveillé la crainte des violences partisanes. Hier comme aujourd'hui, le prix à payer pour ces jeunes et leurs proches est trop élevé, pointe encore le quotidien catholique. À quelques semaines des élections municipales et à l'aune d'une élection présidentielle qui s'annonce sous haute tension, la polarisation des positionnements idéologiques et la radicalisation des discours ne doivent pas faire le lit d'une violence politique dévastatrice. Il appartient à chacun, politiques et citoyens, de garder un cap de responsabilité. » Gisèle Pélicot : Et la joie de vivre À la Une également Et la joie de vivre : c'est le titre du livre choc de Gisèle Pélicot qui sort demain. Sortie mondiale dans pas moins de 22 langues. C'est sans doute le livre le plus attendu de l'année. Depuis le procès historique d'Avignon, Gisèle Pélicot est devenue une icône mondiale de la lutte contre les violences sexuelles. Et la presse du monde entier publie des extraits de son ouvrage : du Times à Londres, au Frankfurter Allgemeine, au Devoir à Montréal, en passant le New York Times. Le New York Times qui publie également une interview exclusive de Gisèle Pelicot, la première pour le continent américain. Commentaire du journal : « Alors que le monde entier est encore sous le choc des révélations liées à l'affaire Epstein, Gisèle Pelicot est devenue une source d'inspiration pour les victimes d'agressions sexuelles et une figure emblématique du féminisme. »  Enfin ces mots de Lulu Garcia-Navarro, la journaliste du New York Times, qui s'est entretenue trois heures durant avec Gisèle Pelicot : « Elle possède une grande force intérieure. Elle était prête à parler. Elle est ouverte, éloquente et émouvante. Elle a écrit ce livre pour être utile aux autres, “pour leur montrer qu'il est possible de surmonter des épreuves terribles“. En un mot, Gisèle Pelicot est extraordinaire. »

Cette conférence abondamment commentée ce matin par la presse européenne. « À Munich, Emmanuel Macron répond à J.D. Vance en appelant à la fierté européenne », titre La Croix. Le quotidien français parle « d'un discours en forme de réponse point par point au vice-président américain, qui avait agoni le Vieux Continent de reproches un an plus tôt dans le même cénacle ».  « Un an après l'attaque de J.D. Vance, Macron appelle à prendre l'Europe en "exemple", plutôt que la "critiquer" », annonce de son côté Libération, citant le président français : « Je pense que l'Europe est intrinsèquement forte et qu'elle peut être encore renforcée pour être un meilleur ami pour nos alliés, notamment les États-Unis », a déclaré Emmanuel Macron.   À Londres, le Guardian, lui, a retenu cette déclaration du chancelier allemand Friedrich Merz : « Les États-Unis ne sont pas assez puissants pour agir seuls. Ils ont atteint les limites de leur pouvoir et ont peut-être déjà perdu leur rôle de leader mondial ». Enfin le quotidien allemand Die Welt reprend les propos du gouverneur démocrate de Californie. Gavin Newsom, lui aussi présent à Munich, qui « a prôné la patience. » « Donald Trump n'est qu'un homme de passage », a-t-il dit, « dans trois ans, il ne sera plus là ». Noms, adresses électroniques et numéros de téléphone Aux États-Unis, l'ICE, la police de l'immigration, est une nouvelle fois au cœur des débats. « Le Département de la sécurité intérieure, explique le New York Times, a envoyé à plusieurs sociétés, notamment Google et Meta, des assignations à comparaître pour obtenir des informations sur les comptes qui suivent ou commentent les activités de l'ICE ». Autrement dit, précise le quotidien américain : « le département de la Sécurité intérieure intensifie ses efforts pour identifier les Américains qui s'opposent à l'ICE, en adressant aux entreprises technologiques des demandes exigeant les noms, adresses électroniques, numéros de téléphone et autres données d'identification associés aux comptes de médias sociaux, qui suivent ou critiquent l'ICE ». Selon le New York Times, « Google, Reddit, Discord et Meta (propriétaire de Facebook et Instagram), ont ainsi reçu des centaines de citations à comparaître » et « ont accédé à certaines demandes », c'est en tout cas ce qu'affirment les autorités américaines. Commentaire de Steve Loney, avocat principal de l'Union américaine pour les libertés civiles de Pennsylvanie : « le gouvernement s'arroge davantage de libertés qu'auparavant ». « La fréquence et l'impunité (de ses demandes) est sans précédent ».  « La page est tournée » L'Orient-Le Jour s'est rendu au Salon du livre de Damas. « Avec 500 éditeurs de 236 pays », annonce le quotidien libanais, « la première édition post-Assad est un succès pour le gouvernement de transition, tout autant qu'une vitrine de son projet national ». « Pendant des décennies, rappelle L'Orient-Le Jour, sous le régime Assad, le Salon International du Livre de Damas était la vitrine d'une propagande politique omniprésente ». Qu'en est-il aujourd'hui ? « La page est bel et bien tournée », explique L'Orient-le Jour, qui cite un libraire selon lequel « on peut vendre ce qu'on veut, il n'y a aucun contrôle des livres ». Mais ce n'est peut-être pas aussi simple, selon le quotidien libanais, qui a certes pu consulter « une petite sélection d'Harry Potter, Georges Orwell ou encore des mangas », mais qui a aussi constaté « certaines limites », « les titres considérés comme portant atteinte à la paix civile et aux valeurs syriennes, ou louant l'ancien dictateur sont prohibés ».   Mais surtout « l'offre islamique domine clairement », allant jusqu'aux « penseurs ayant inspiré al-Qaïda ou encore les Frères musulmans ». Toutefois, L'Orient-Le Jour ne boude pas son plaisir, et parle d'un « succès indéniable », « pour cette foire qui n'a rien à envier aux grands salons internationaux ». Une foire dans laquelle, nous dit-on, « se croisent familles avec poussettes, bandes de copines hilares et barbus rigoristes ».

The United Nations on Tuesday warned of a sharp escalation in violence in South Sudan, driven by political deadlock among the signatories to the country's fragile peace deal, as clashes, displacement and humanitarian access restrictions worsen. Briefing the UN Security Council, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said rising tensions linked to stalled implementation of the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement had led to armed confrontations across several regions, particularly in Jonglei state. He said fighting between government and opposition forces had intensified in recent weeks, with reports of aerial bombardments, inflammatory rhetoric and mass displacement. More than 280,000 people have been displaced by violence in Jonglei alone, according to government figures, he added. Lacroix expressed concern over reports that government forces had ordered the temporary relocation of civilians, as well as UN and humanitarian personnel, from parts of Jonglei in late January ahead of a planned military operation, although authorities later denied issuing such instructions. He also warned that unilateral initiatives to amend the 2018 peace agreement, including proposals to delay constitution-making until after elections, risk undermining the accord's primacy. The main opposition group, the SPLM/A-IO, has rejected the initiatives, citing ongoing legal proceedings involving First Vice President Riek Machar and demanding his release before engaging in political dialogue. South Sudan remains one of the most dangerous countries for aid workers, Lacroix said, noting that 350 attacks on humanitarian staff and facilities were recorded in 2025, up from 255 the previous year. Access constraints persist, particularly in opposition-held areas, as the country battles its worst cholera outbreak, with more than 98,000 cases reported since September 2024. He said violence in parts of Jonglei had forced the closure of nutrition sites and health facilities, cutting off care for thousands of children and pregnant women, while recent attacks and looting of humanitarian barges in Upper Nile state had further shrunk humanitarian space. Lacroix also warned that cost-cutting measures at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were limiting its ability to protect civilians, with patrols reduced by up to 70 percent in some areas and dozens of human rights monitoring missions cancelled. Despite these constraints, he said UNMISS continued to play a critical deterrent role, citing the mission's presence in Akobo, Jonglei, as helping prevent possible aerial bombardments amid escalating fighting.
