In a small corner of Lyceum 20, a type of school comprising primary and secondary ones, in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, students, teachers and community members recently gathered as the aroma of food wafted through the air. It was not just a usual school event. It was a celebration of varenyky, the beloved Ukrainian dumplings. Varenyky is much more than a delicious Ukrainian dish. The food represents the heart and soul of a nation. It is a sign of hospitality, unity, and tradition, making it perfect for a school festival to bring people together. Every year, schools across Ukraine come alive with the spirit of unity when different festivals are organized. This year, the festival in the Lyceum served several purposes. In addition to bringing the community together, it was organized to provide much-needed assistance to children in need and the brave men and women in the army. Due to the war a lot of people, especially children, were forced to flee from the eastern parts of the country. They lost their parents and friends, houses and other belongings. So, they need both psychological and financial help. In a perogy festival, students, parents, and teachers worked to prepare several kinds of foods, including dumplings. The school became a center of culinary creativity, with everyone working together to create the tastiest varenyky. The place of education became a colorful market decorated with pumpkins and snowball trees. Food and dumplings included many fillings, from classic potato and cheese to sweet fruit-filled varieties, salmon, ricotta, herring, and beans. Beyond food, the perogy festival was also a beacon of hope for those who need it most. Children, who are often the most vulnerable members of society, received support from this festival. Andriy Nazarenko (grade 5-D) moved to Vinnytsia from Bakhmut. This town is completely destroyed nowadays. He was excited to take part in the event. “I did not expect to get such support from my new teachers and classmates. I am really touched,” said the boy. Money raised from the festival also went to soldiers who defend the nation and provide equipment and supplies for the Ukrainian military. Through their involvement in the festival, students learned that they can make a difference in the world, no matter their age.

In this special edition of *Silo Busting,* Elaina Shekhter, EPAM's Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer, interviews Stepan Mitish, VP and Head of Ukraine, about how his role shifted from being a leader navigating war-time crises to a leader embracing the challenges of the business world. Mitish says that the year 2022 was so filled with extreme challenges that he and his team can count it as “three or five years of experience.” He says the experience truly seasoned his team: “We understood what a great team means, not just in theory.” In hindsight, Mitish says, the experience puts COVID in perspective: “At that time, it was something catastrophical… but now you recall it with a smile on your face,” says Mitish. Mitish talks about how he and his team started preparation for a potential war quite before it actually happened, creating a very solid business continuity plan (BCP). But if you ask whether he believed it would happen: “I didn't, and even now, for me it's hard to accept how could anybody in the 21st century do what actually was done.” He tells the harrowing story of how it began very, very early morning. Lots of messages pouring in from areas under attack. “It was very loud night and morning,” he says it was all about the quiet evacuation of our people to so-called shelters in the western part of Ukraine. Vinnytsia. Lviv. Ivano-Frankivsk. Uzhhorod. At the beginning of the war, he was orchestrating 15,000 employees but they were working as one. He says that after a week, “I was afraid to start hearing a lot of complaints from our clients about failed delivery, non-delivery in services.” Instead, he received emails from clients “who were praising our teams for working days and nights and even delivering planned releases.” By the second or third week, everyone understood that Russia could not do a “so-called blitzkrieg in three days” and that it wasn't “possible to break Ukrainians and to break EPAM in Ukraine.” He says: “Despite all the challenges, all the craziness that was going on,” he and his team continued to deliver. Relentlessly. “People were doing incredible, heroic things on the ground, but also doing delivery from bomb shelters and various faraway locations where people ended up moving to in order to avoid actually being in the midst of ongoing attacks,” says Shekhter. “From your point of view, why do you think they did it?” Mitish says it was a combination of two things: (a) “Probably it's part of Ukrainian values or DNA to be very much focused on results;” and (b) “We don't have any other home and we understand that we fight for our lives, for our workplaces, for our families. And if not me, then who's going to do that?” So where are we now in Ukraine? “I believe that the worst, worst days are already behind us,” says Mitish who wants to encourage our clients and future clients to support Ukraine to bring more business there. “I strongly believe that once this war is over and Ukraine wins, there will be a huge queue of those companies' investors… and if you're going to be on the end of the queue, probably it will be much harder to find the best talent for you and your business.” You'll want to listen to our resilient colleague tell his amazing story. Ukraine struck a deal to secure its grain exports, but Russian perfidy meant Moscow broke the agreement almost immediately. Following the end of the battle for Lysychansk, fighting on the front lines has slowed considerably, though that is very relative. Russia has not made any advances since then, and its artillery attacks are far less frequent. This is thanks in large part to the devastating effectiveness of the HIMARS system in destroying their logistics. This may be the key to a (hopefully) upcoming liberation of Kherson. But a slow down of violence on the front lines has also been an increase in missile attacks behind them. Stories from Russia, Ukraine, Lebanon and South Africa Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine is now entering its six-month and there's still no signs of any possible resolution or ceasefire. Russian citizens continue to be fed a daily diet of propaganda on State TV, with fewer and fewer sources of independent news. But the conflict is nevertheless taking its toll on Russian citizens as soldiers go out to the frontline, never to return, which has left families questioning the government line that the Ukraine invasion is necessary. To keep abreast of the Russian point of view, Steve Rosenburg has a daily ritual: buying his newspapers each day from his local newspaper kiosk, run by a woman called Valentina. He tells her story. In Ukraine, a recent missile attack in the city of Vinnytsia, in central-west Ukraine has served as a stark reminder of the indiscriminate nature of Russia's military onslaught. Everyday routines have become fraught with hazard, from a trip to the shops to a walk to school, even in those cities considered to be safe. Sarah Rainsford has been in Vinnytsia and Mykolaiv. The Lebanese economy is in a state of collapse, but the government hopes that the summer tourist season, when many Lebanese living abroad return for a holiday, will provide a much-needed boost. But any visitor must navigate a tangled web of erratic exchange rates, as Angelica Jopson has found. And finally, to South Africa's West Coast, the site of a large saltwater lagoon situated in a National Park, around 55 miles north of Cape Town. The area, which is also a marine reserve, attracts numerous water birds and sea life, as the Atlantic waves pound its edge. Antonia Quirke went to explore the lagoon.

Hello to you still listening in Vinnytsia, Ukraine!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday with your host, Diane Wyzga.Just when you think it can't get any worse, it does. I don't need to remind anyone who's listening because we all feel it. Now what?I don't know how electricity works. I can't see it until it shows up in a lightbulb; but I believe it's there.I don't know how faith works; but I believe in "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” [Hebrews 11 King James version] because faith has helped me hang on through many a wretched spot. What I do know is this: there are opportunities yet to manifest; what they are, where they will come from, or even how they will arrive is yet to be seen.Practical Tip. When you're feeling like there's no hope for it - no matter the reason - hang on. “When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.” [Harriet Beecher Stowe] How do I know? I don't. But it does. Any remaining hope for a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis went down the drain on 24 February as the country woke up to an invasion by Russia from both land and sea. Addressing his nation in a televised speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that this is a “special military operation” to demilitarise Ukraine but not occupy it, but the situation on the ground speaks differently with explosions occurring across a wide swathe of the country. The explosions, according to the several foreign media reports, could be heard in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, Kharkiv in the country's north-east, and as far as Vinnytsia in the west. Ukrainian officials have stated that explosions were also heard at the country's largest airport, in Kyiv. At the time of recording this episode, at least 40 Ukrainian soldiers and 10 civilians were killed by Russian shelling, as per an AFP report. The report adds that Russian forces have also captured two towns in eastern Ukraine's Luhansk region, which Putin recognised as independent just two days ago. Visuals from the ground in Kyiv capture air raid sirens blasting across the city as citizens try to leave the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared martial law for the next 30 days. In a late-night statement on 23 February, Zelenskyy said that if Russia invades, Ukraine will defend itself, adding "as you attack, it will be our faces you see, not our backs.” This is an unprecedented move by Russia, with the story still developing as we record this episode. Today, I will unpack what we know so far and where this crisis may be headed. Joining me today to discuss the crisis is Nandan Unnikrishnan, a Distinguished Fellow at Observer Research Foundation, a global policy think tank. Consoles built on 2013-era technology might not be great at mining, but they don't need to be when you have 3,800 of them.Although the market for GPUs is starting to improve, and dedicated ASICs might be on the way to relieve demand, it seems that one group of enterprising cryptocurrency miners have turned to last-gen console hardware to get things done.https://ambcrypto.com/bitcoin-doesnt-require-an-etf-but-this-is-why-its-a-plus/Bitcoin DOESN'T require an ETF, but this is why it's a plusThe prolonged saga between the SEC and Bitcoiners about the former approving a Bitcoin ETF has been frustrating for many.
