In this powerful episode of The Backyard Bouquet, host Jennifer Gulizia sits down with Nicole Sardo of Midnight Magic Garden—a former stop-motion artist who left her dream job at Laika Studios after a life-altering autoimmune diagnosis.Nicole shares her remarkable journey of healing through gardening, how she's building a flourishing micro flower farm in her front yard, and how she's now uplifting other growers through her initiatives: Small Farms Big Orders and a fascinating Heirloom Dahlia Study. If you've ever faced a turning point, wondered how to pivot with purpose, or needed a reminder that beauty can take root even in your hardest seasons—this one's for you.
ParaNorman's unique approach to horror allows it to explore serious societal issues through animation, and creatively blends animated horror with heartfelt themes of acceptance and understanding. Laika Studios have never been one to follow the leader, and while other studios were focusing on CG animation, Laika removed it's CG department purely for stop-motion. Developing groundbreaking techniques first used on Coraline, enhanced further for ParaNorman, including colour 3D printing, to create over 31,000 props. ParaNorman, which also features the first openly gay character in an American animated film, emphasizes the importance of communication and empathy in overcoming fear and prejudice. This is a movie that doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of the past, with historical references shaping ParaNorman's story, particularly the Salem witch trialsLike Norman's Grandma says when Norman tells her the zombie eats brains… “he's going to ruin his dinner. I'm sure if they just bothered to sit down and talk it through, it would be a different story”.I would love to hear your thoughts on ParaNorman !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! Continuing the podcast's 3 for Halloween series this month, Adrian and Emma take a virtual visit to Blithe Hollow and talk about ParaNorman—but not before divulging in a modern AU of the Laika Studios lead characters with Kubo running a coffeeshop (thanks to news of Kubo's voice actor Art Parkinson's assumption of ownership and operation of The Coffee Tree in Derry, Northern Ireland, UK). Once that discussion concludes, Adrian makes light of what's been going on at the sofa of ITV's This Morning programme, following the respective departures of its co-hosts, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, and what might come next for the embattled UK daytime show. “I have a question. If I'm Beetle and you're Monkey, why isn't he called Boy?" We are checking out 2016's "Kubo and the Two Strings", the directorial debut from Travis Knight, CEO of Laika. Joined by our very own Honey Boy, Jon from the "Life's But A Song" podcast, we talk about the extremely white voice cast, why this was Laika's lowest performing movie, and what movie we'd pair this with for an Adam Driver Drive-In Double Feature! Hosted by Picturehouse's very own Sam Clements, The Love Of Cinema podcast is proudly supported by Kia. Sam is joined by writer-director Chris Butler from Laika Studios to discuss the 10th anniversary re-release of ParaNorman. As a co-writer of Coraline and the co-director of Flushed Away respectively, Chris Butler and Sam Fell had just the credentials to create arguably the most innovative 3D animation to date. Employing a unique hybrid of CGI and stop-motion technology, ParaNorman tells of a town besieged by rudely awakened and rather irate zombies. The town's only hope of salvation is Norman, a boy blessed with the ability to understand the zombies' language (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee, in a role that could hardly be more different from his character in The Road). As he battles with ghosts, witches and moronic adults as well as the living dead, Norman's supernatural powers are entertainingly stretched to their limits, and the film's breathtaking pace is further enhanced by stellar voicing from the likes of John Goodman, Elaine Stritch and Casey Affleck. In Footnote #4, Chris and Alex unpack the uncanny spectacle and affecting effects of stop-motion animation, from understanding the hands-on labour that crafts its illusions of life to the oneiric ‘stopped-motion' worlds of Ladislas Starevich, Willis O'Brien, Ray Harryhausen, Jan Švankmajer and the Quay Brothers. Listen as they spend 10 minutes working through the European found object tradition; the use of stop-motion as part of the armoury of Hollywood effects technology; the power of awarding objects and puppets sudden sentience; Aardman's contemporary ‘claymation' and the work of the Laika Studios; and the broader accessibility of stop-motion as a popular technique of animation. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Continuing on with this unintentional animation Binge, we have - Missing Link from Laika Studios. I've heard some pretty sad things about this film, especially considering it lost about $80 Million Dollars at the Box office. In which the Mister and the Monsters join me in reviewing PARANORMAN (2012), from Laika Studios and directed by Chris Butler and Sam Fell. This film tells the story of a young man named Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who has the ability to see and speak with ghosts. Strange things start to happen and his family's black sheep uncle (John Goodman) comes to Norman with a call to action over impending ominous events that may devastate the town. The story mixes elements of adventure and comedy to weave a story where once again Laika's stellar storytelling prowess is on full display making a simple tale more nuanced and endearing. Nesta semana, além de comentar as notícias, com participação especial do maravilhoso Maicon Santini, e dar dicas pro fim de semana, decidimos falar sobre 3 animações que amamos do estúdio Laika. Adam Hlavac and Emily Rose Jacobson introduce each other to movies the other person hasn't seen, discuss the cultural and personal impacts of their films, and whether or not they still hold up. This week, Emily and Adam are discussing the stop-motion animated film, "Paranorman," from Laika Studios. Join the conversation as we discuss the under-valued art of stop-motion animation, how it's a unique horror film and how, at its core, it's a story with heart.
Okay so the movie's suitable for kids, but the episode is not. Bob, RC, and Andy watched Laika Studios' *ParaNorman*, but still somehow end up talking about dicks.
Welcome back to Double Feature, the IDS film podcast where the powers that be let us in a podcast booth to give you hot takes, and maybe some lukewarm ones too. Spooky season is upon us as we draw closer and closer to Halloween, but not everyone has the stomach for the gory flicks that define most of the horror genre. There are plenty of options for the weak-stomached that hold back on the blood and guts but still deliver on achieving the perfect vibe for the season. For the fourth episode of Double Feature, hosts Chris Forrester and Annie Aguiar gush over not one, but two masterpieces from Laika Studios— "Coraline" and "Paranorman." Our special guest this week is IDS photographer Alex Deryn. This episode contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro's "The Devil's Backbone."
In this week's episode of Off Panel, cartoonist Vera Brosgol joins the show for the first time to talk her latest graphic novel Be Prepared and her work overall. Brosgol discusses her recent book tour, the experience of visiting schools, solely focusing on being a graphic novelist, the difficulty of writing, how she works, revisiting her past in her work, going the memoir route, the impact working in animation for Laika Studios had on her comic work, working with first second, her approach to layouts, the value of turning your brain off, the growing kids market and more, before diving into five questions about Vera Brosgol, the person.

Happy Halloween from the Cinema Beef Podcast. Now give us your candy!!!! Jamie and Gary are joined by Brian M. Sammons to celebrate the time when the hills ran red with children’s blood to discuss two family films. Kind of ironic, huh. We cover the first two films in the incredible Laika Studios catalog. First up, when a lonely girl is bored and ignored by her family, she discovers a secret world where all of her dreams seem to come true but at what cost. All this and old lady pasties in Coraline from 2009. Then, Norman is a kid who has a particular issue. He can see ghosts and this becomes a major issue when he’s tasked to hold back a town curse and accidentally releases a horde of zombies and hilarity in the great Paranorman from 2012. Treat yo self and watch both of these movies. I myself love stop motion and I honestly wish there were more studios able to do this. Laika does amazing work and I'm very excited for what they have coming down the pipe. There's likely to be reviews of their other films on the podcast, probably this coming winter. Here's a link to Laika's website. There will be no episode this week. I need to do some needed winter prep work as well as focus on a couple of projects that are sadly unrelated to Relevant to Our Interests. This week we review the newest animated film from Laika Studios.
For this year on Planet Tyro's 2016 edition of CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION DAY MONTH we will be taking a look at all the solo focused movie releases by the american stop motion animation studio - LAIKA ENTERTAINMENT(i say solo release work as sometimes they have contributed their talents to movies such as Corse Bride which will not be included in our list)We will actually be starting the discussion with their most recent release Kubo and the two strings and then working our way backwards all the way to their first release 2009's CoralineSo yeah, this isn't a super detailed breakdown or a super critical analysis - its just Donald's thoughts on each movie in reverse order from a 2016 point of viewIf you've seen this movie or any of the others i will be mentioning please feel free to leave a comment in the chat section below and lets discuss!
In 2012 coming off the critical success of Coraline, Laika Studios released their follow-up feature about a young boy who communicates with the dead tasked with dealing with an angry spirit and the horde of zombies at its call. ParaNorman once again captured the hearts of critics but could at best create a cult following. But does the film deserve better or should it be put back to rest for an eternal slumber?
