Tala Ashe has captivated audiences on screen as a time-traveling hacker in Legends of Tomorrow and on stage in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play English. Now making her Broadway debut, she brings a deeply personal perspective to her role, exploring themes of language, identity, and cultural assimilation. In this conversation, Tala opens up about her own experiences growing up in Ohio after emigrating from Iran, the complexities of representation in Hollywood, and the emotional weight of performing English on Broadway. She shares the challenges of switching between accents on stage, how her family's journey shaped her artistic path, and why she's fiercely selective about the roles she takes. With humor, insight, and vulnerability, Tala offers a thoughtful perspective on storytelling, advocacy, and what it truly means to find your voice. Tala Ashe is an Iranian-American actress best known for her role as Zari Tomaz/Zari Tarazi in DC's Legends of Tomorrow. She has also appeared in Smash, American Odyssey, Covert Affairs, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and As the World Turns. On stage, she received critical acclaim for her performance in English, Sanaz Toossi's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, and is now making her Broadway debut in its transfer. A graduate of Boston University's School of Theatre, she has built a career focused on complex, fully realized characters that challenge stereotypes and expand representation. Connect with Tala:
Actress Natalie Moon is fully bidialectal, meaning she's equally proficient in using two or more dialects of the same language. In fact, she's so proficient at being bidialectal that she's an in-demand accent coach, and has coached big bold names like Jon Voight and Kristin Chenoweth. She also produced How To Make it in Hollywood (When You're Foreign AF), Alessandro Miro's hilarious web series that skewered stereotypes around accents in the film biz. In addition to her work in the accent realm, Natalie is also a talented actor who has performed in an array of fan favourite productions, including The Flash, Motherland: Fort Salem, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Death Note, and a recent episode of Superman & Lois in which she portrayed Lex Luthor's ex-wife, Erica Alexandra del Portenza Luthor. In this fascinating conversation, Natalie talks about what it takes to be bidialectal, the creative ways she builds backgrounds for her characters, that time Sir Patrick Stewart read Moby Dick to her class at the Oxford School of Drama, and how she prepared to play Erica, Lex Luthor's ex-wife, on Superman & Lois (also: Sabrina shares her unpopular opinion on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine).Episode sponsor: UBCP/ACTRA

An inexperienced crew of administrators aspiring to be field operators are assigned to a distant star system, where they encounter a sentient nebula. Genre: Science Fiction Excerpt: The newly appointed Captain Dorus gazed at his new crew, each one interviewed and hand-picked by him. The not-so-hotshot pilot, Orson, who retired early after she was nearly killed flying into a star during a practice maneuver. The experienced engineer, Rekha, whose tendency to tinker a little too much got her booted off the first four ships she was assigned to. A doctor, Shade, who had no specialty because she kept getting distracted by new discoveries. And the actor, Kellu, whose purpose there no one—including himself—quite understood. What's the Writing Prompt that inspired the story? No prompt. This idea came to me this morning, inspired by a binge-watch session of a show I once enjoyed (“Legends of Tomorrow,” Season 3). I've always loved the idea of a ragtag crew onboard a spaceship having adventures and doing stuff together and…stuff. MY FIRST BOOK IS OUT!Ever wonder how I've gotten all these hundreds of stories written? I have a method. And I talk all about it in my book called Fictioneer's Field Guide: A Game Plan for Writing Short Stories. It's now available as an eBook, paperback, and hardcover. Welcome back to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Sharlene Royer, the Assistant Stunt Coordinator for utterly brilliant ‘Shogun', which recently won a record-breaking 18 Emmys - including a very well-deserved one for Outstanding Stunt Performance!Based on James Clavell's novel, FX's 'Shōgun' is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village...It is an outstanding drama, available on Hulu in the USA, and on Disney+ in the UK and other territories. It's well worth watching and catching up if you haven't seen it yet, as it appears it will be returning for two more seasons following its record-breaking Emmy win.Born and raised in Quebec to a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, Sharlene was a dancer from the ages of 7 to 18, before moving into modelling and acting. However, following a meeting with legendary Stunt Coordinator, Alan Oliney, she was encouraged to try stunt work, and found her calling. She soon became a very sought-after stunt performer being requested to double stars such as Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Williams and many more.On 'Shōgun', Sharlene discusses her work on the epic drama as Assistant Stunt Coordinator, working alongside her boss (and life-partner) Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle, developing the hugely complex Emmy-winning “cannon” scene, melding VFX, physical effects and stunts for the “earthquake”, plus location scouting, stunt coordinating in the pandemic and lots more.If that wasn't enough, Sharlene was also Assistant Stunt Coordinator on season one of the hit CBS drama ‘Tracker', for which she became the first Black, Female Stunt Coordinator to win a Leo Award from The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. She talks about working with lead actor Justin Hartley (and his photographic memory), and also working with Justin alongside guest star Jenson Ackles... who sound like they were as much fun together as you'd expect!Still want more? She also worked on the wonderfully fun DC superhero drama ‘Legends of Tomorrow', performing the stunt work for Hawkgirl, so we touch on that in the interview too! Sharlene's other projects include things such as 'The Man In The High Castle', 'Never Let Go', 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', 'Siren', 'See', 'The 100', 'The Rookie', and lots more!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Could the legends of tomorrow be born from the technology of today? As we push the boundaries of human achievement, are we also unknowingly crafting the myths that future civilizations will revere? We are grateful for our listeners who have become friends. We are grateful for the community built around this podcast. But none of this would be possible with our you our community of listeners! The Waverider has crossed us over to a new reality. One where the Tomorrow People, with telepathy, telekinesis, and teleportation abilities, are on the run from the secret government task force, the ULTRA organization. In this episode we see teenage Roger saving Jed from a bullet. It is an act that set Jed's live in motion. Through flashbacks we see the brothers experimenting and testing Rogers powers. A next step is need. Jed connects them with Hugh Bathory. He is a powerful and driven person with a vision. He coins the term Tomorrow People, because he is one. He has grand plans to help the world with the powers of the Tomorrow People. But Jed demands part of the research go to helping to give humans powers. This sets the two on a adversarial path. Jed convinces Stephen the only path to end the war is killing Bathory, The Founder. They need John to kill him. It takes some hard conversations between Jed and Stephen and Jed and John, but they move forward. In the end it takes Jed & TIM hacking The Founder's security, Cassie distracting her dad, and a battle for John & Stephen to get to him. But in the end The Founder says all of this was Jed's plan to drive a wedge between them. He says he and Roger built the machine to help the Tomorrow People move forward. Cassie pushes Stephen out of the way and John fire the gun. The Founder deflects it and it hits and kills Cassie. Jed is on the run, and we don't know who to trust. Cara is getting flashes of a new Breakout. She is in her head just like Stephen was. Tim helps narrow down the location to Lincoln Center. Cara and Russell find her. The ballerina breakout is Cara's sister Sophie. Sophie is talented and has been working hard to shine as a ballerina. The powers are nothing that she wants. The sisters reconnect and with the help of Astrid, Sophie sees who Cara really is. Cara cannot crush her sister's dreams and imprison her in the Tomorrow People's life. So, she has Stephen wipe Sophie from ULTRA's data base. With the help of a D Chip bracelet, Sophie can live her life. John Connor is a fictional character and the male protagonist of the Terminator franchise. Created by writer/director James Cameron, the character is first referred to in the 1984 film The Terminator and first appears in its 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day (T2). In the character's first appearance, John is portrayed by Edward Furlong as a child, and briefly by Michael Edwards as an adult in a small role. Other actors have portrayed the character in subsequent films, including Nick Stahl, Christian Bale, and Jason Clarke. In addition, Thomas Dekker portrayed John Connor in the two-season television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The character serves as a protagonist in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and Terminator Salvation (2009), the antagonist of the film Terminator Genisys (2015), and has a brief cameo in Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) John Constantine (/ˈkɒnstənˌtaɪn/)[1] is a fictional antihero who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 (June 1985), and was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben. The titular Hellblazer,[2][3] Constantine is a working-class warlock, occult detective, and con man from Liverpool who is stationed in London. He is known for his endless cynicism, deadpan wit, ruthless cunning, and constant chain smoking, but he is also a passionate humanitarian driven by a heartfelt desire to do some good in his life. Originally a supporting character who played a pivotal role in the "American Gothic" Swamp Thing storyline, Constantine received his own comic in 1988. The musician Sting was a visual inspiration for the character.[4] The Hellblazer series was the longest-running and most successful title of DC's Vertigo imprint.[5] Empire ranked Constantine third in their 50 Greatest Comic Characters of All Time,[6] while IGN ranked him number 29 in its Top 100 Comic Book Heroes, and the character ranked number 10 in Wizard's Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time. The character made his live-action debut in the film Constantine (2005), played by Keanu Reeves. On television, Constantine was played in the television series Constantine by Matt Ryan, who later reprised the character in the Arrowverse series Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash, and several animated productions. Jenna Coleman later portrayed a female version of the character (and her ancestor) in the television series The Sandman, adapting both Constantines' roles from the comic series. Some writers who have written his stories have claimed to "see" him.[4][7][8]
This Christmas in July, we are joined by Adam Richard on a sleigh ride that flies right past the Marvel Cinematic Universe and lands on Margot Kidder's rooftop in 1978. Which is, it turns out, not a bad place to be. It's The Return of Doctor Mysterio. Notes and links Steven Moffat's clear inspiration here is Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie (1978), an astonishingly well-made and entertaining superhero movie starring Christopher Reeve as Clark and the wonderful Margot Kidder as Lois. If you haven't seen it, put your phone down at once and go and find a copy. In Episode 271: Eels with Jazz Hands, we mentioned the previous life of director Ed Bazalgette as a member of 1980s one-hit wonder The Vapors. The one hit in question was called Turning Japanese, and it was a massive thing at the time. The CW superhero shows Peter mentions are collectively called the Arrowverse, which started just a few years before this episode aired, and which included shows like Arrow (2012), The Flash (2014), Supergirl (2015) and Legends of Tomorrow (2016), featuring our very own Arthur Darvill. Ang Lee's unloved film Hulk (2003) liberally used comic book panels to transition between scenes (in a way far more sophisticated than what's attempted in this Doctor Who episode). This brief video will give you the idea. It was Adam's job to watch Series 10 of Doctor Who as a regular on the ABC's Doctor Who aftershow Whovians, which covered Series 10 to 12 and screened a day or so after each episode aired. Brendan mentions the Matt Fleischer animated Superman films from the 1940s, particularly the kinds of villains this version of Superman routinely fought. In the second film, The Mechanical Monsters (1941), Superman confronts a group of giant robots who rob banks and museums and inspire artists and filmmakers for generations. Go and watch it at once. Attractive Coal Hill Academy student Ram loses a leg in the first episode of the Doctor Who spin-off Class, which screened over eight weeks leading up to the start of December 2016. And then no one ever mentioned it or even thought about it ever again. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993) was an insanely popular television show in the 1990s, starring Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane and featuring the incredibly beautiful Dean Cain as Clark. (He's a horrid alt-right nutcase these days, which is a grim warning to all of us, I suppose.) Follow us Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, and Adam is @adamrichard. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. Adam Richard's daily Doctor Who podcast is called Adam Richard Has a Theory: it's the place to find Adam's hot-to-lukewarm takes and wild-to-really-quite-sensible theories about everything Doctor Who. You can follow Flight Through Entirety on Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as on X and Facebook. Our website is at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll sneak into your bedroom and torture your favourite stuffed toy. Wait, no we won't. That would be awful. Sorry. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. There's also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. We've covered the first five episodes of Series 1; Episode 6 should be out in the next couple of weeks. The Three Handed Game is a podcast on The Avengers and The New Avengers. In the most recent episode, Brendan, Richard and Steven watched an episode from Diana Rigg's first series, Two's a Crowd. Brendan's gaming podcast is called The Bjay BJ Game Show, and in its most recent episode, Brendan and Bjay visited some tilt-shifted Minecraft-inspired holiday destinations in The Touryst. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Last week, we visited the centre of the galaxy and met up with the Devil (who seemed nice) in an inexpensively produced episode of The Animated Series called The Magicks of Megas-Tu.

Horse girlies, history girlies, and booktok girlies - this one is for you. On this week's The Legendary Ladies Podcast duo episode, Amy and Morgan are over the moon to discuss the [entire] Amazon Prime Video Series "My Lady Jane", which it turns out, was actually written exclusively for the hosts. Not really, but you get the picture. The hosts rave over the fun nature of alter-history (and what they got right vs what they artfully changed), chat about the steamy chemistry between the two leads, and make predictions about season 2. They also find themselves reminiscing about their old stomping grounds, The Legends of Tomorrow, and how My Lady Jane seems to follow the same thematic vein - it's a show that doesn't take itself so seriously, and manages to find the heart and soul in a way that stays with the viewers long after they've gotten over the fact that the main character can turn into a literal horse. Any dancer dreaming of a professional career is most likely working hard in the studio and honing their skills to be the strongest dancer they can be, but in the professional dance world, talent is only 20% of the equation. There are a lot of other skills to master that make up that other 80%. This 80/20 rule where success as a professional dancer is 20% talent, 80% everything else comes from my esteemed guest today, Menina Fortunato. Menina's mission is to help the next generation of dancers create their dream dance careers. She had her own remarkable career for three decades in this dance industry. She has navigated the demands of both on-camera and behind-the-scenes work while also juggling the responsibilities of being a loving wife and devoted mother of three. Menina has worked on prominent television shows and films including America's Got Talent, Star Trek: Enterprise, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and she's graced stadium stages entertaining massive crowds with superstars like Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood, Paula Abdul, and so many more. Menina and I talk about maintaining motivation as a professional dancer, how our current generation could learn more about rejection and handling negative emotions through mental toughness and some mindset advice for aspiring professionals. And, of course, she'll break down her 80/20 rule and share what that other 80% is all about!
