Sam and Melissa founded the Growing Up in Polygamy podcast to help survivors of the fundamentalist Mormon cult, Warren Jeffs FLDS, and other extremist high-control groups. As we discuss our experiences, we discover that, polygamy aside, the FLDS and the PBCC are remarkably similar in their history, leadership and mechanisms of physical, mental and spiritual control and abuse. We also compare the PBCC with the mainstream Mormon LDS, with their doomsday ideology, racism and their recent attempts to position themselves as a "Mainstream Christian Church" (sound familiar?) Sam describes his heart wrenching exit from the FLDS and the impact it had on his family. If you hadn't known he was from the FLDS, it would sound as if we were interviewing a recent leaver from the PBCC. Part 1 hopefully helps those inside question- "How can there be so many other groups claiming to be the only way and to have the one and only Man of God bringing the word to them?" Stay tuned for part 2 as we continue to dive into the FLDS leader and how he continues to lead from jail. After watching the recommended LDS video about temples and then touring the temple, they reviewed the video and discussed their tour experience. In those episodes, the issue is the disparity of what they see in Mormon belief and theology compared to the teaching of the Bible. After receiving questions, they determined to discuss the five significant differences between Mormonism and biblical Christianity. In this episode, they share why they believe the faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints does not align with historical, biblical Christianity. Copyright 2024. It looks like it's time to talk about the elephant in the room: The Mormonism in this story.  First of all, I've got to say that Mormon people are some of the best people I've known. My parents, friends, colleagues, neighbors - I have a Mormon background. Most of the people I know locally are Mormon. And they're wonderful – I love them dearly! Mormons, or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are great. They're my folks. The fact that I'm producing this book now isn't any reflection on them.  The thing that's so nefarious about this book is its villain. It's not a person – it's systemic religious extortion used to build wealthy empires, while neglecting the poor and needy. That's what it's all about – when the institutions we trust to take care of us that actually take way more than they give. Now, is this a uniquely Mormon/LDS problem? No! But it happened then, and it's happening now. Don't believe me? Check out 60 Minutes on CBS last week. This religious empire building they talk of in the book is still happening today.  And so, like other topics that we've discussed over the years - racism, classism, poverty, - things that these classic authors wrote about over 100 years ago that were a problem then and are still a problem now, I'm afraid religious-oriented extortion is among them. I wish it wasn't but here we are.  Let's see if we can do better. Sandra Tanner,   What can I possibly write in the description of this podcast to put words to the profound experience this was to interview you in your legendary Lighthouse Ministry?    There are no words.   There is only a feeling of "home". A feeling of sitting across from, what I can only say, felt like my Grandmother or Mother explaining to me with love and "silent empowerment" what my heart needed to hear. You were the first in-person interview I ever recorded on my own. It was in a time where I was hurting from being "excommunicated" from a couple post-mormon spaces that was causing more pain then being "excommunicated" from the Mormon church.    You accepted the invitation for an interview at your ministry with open arms and gave me advice on faith, love, Patriarchy (Mormon and Post-Mormon), using my voice and being a mother while in this unique space.    You gave me hope.    You showed me love.   You made me curious of building a new relationship with Jesus again.   I will be forever grateful for what you did for all of us before Google! Before 2 clicks got you to unknown and hidden truths! You had to study and dig into archives, in person, for months and years for what we now have at our fingertips.  We owe you so much, yet at 81 years-old you are still the one giving back with you and Jerald's legacy.    The Lighthouse Legacy.    Thank you, Sandra Tanner! Thank you for your friendship, that I know I am not unique to have, but am made to feel it is.   With love and admiration, Jenn Kamp   *Don't miss this podcast! In this episode, we have a conversation with ex-Mormon (or “exmo”) YouTubers Jordan and McKay! They share their journey of growing up in the Mormon/LDS church and the things that caused them to doubt until their “shelves” of faith broke and they decided to leave (the disturbing history of Joseph Smith marrying women as young as 14, the practices and lack of informed consent in the Temple, among other things). All of us discuss what we were taught about the other's faith tradition–Anna and April were taught that Mormonism was a cult and that Mormons were going to hell, and *gasp* they believed in a Heavenly Mother as well as Father; and Jordan and McKay were taught that, although Mormons tried to do work in partnership with other denominations, those denominations were a distorted mirror compared to Joseph Smith's restored church. April talks about how her church's support of Mitt Romney was the first crack in her evangelical faith (because if he's going to hell as they taught her all Mormons are, then why are they voting for him?). We also talk about the tension in Mormon culture of being very patriotic but also having a distrust of “big government.” You can find Jordan and Mckay on their YouTube channel here, and you can find them on Instagram and TikTok @jordanandmckay. On the 38th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, former atheist and cold case expert Jay Warner Wallace shares his experience as a homicide detective investigating the evidence for Jesus of Nazareth outside of the Bible and inside the text of the Bible. Jim, a popular Christian who uses forensic apologetics believes there are many different versions of the victim (Jesus). He explains how he was able to use his expertise to unveil the true Jesus reported in the Bible and historians. Using a term he coined as "cold case christianity" Jim discusses how to get results long after witnesses are gone. Having a large Mormon family, Jim began investigating Mormonism as part of his journey from being an atheist to a believing Christian who would later have a christian worldview. Using his experience he discovered Mormon founder Joseph Smith was not a prophet and The Book of Mormon does not meet the forensic test of truth. All Heart host Paul, a former Mormon, also with a Christian worldview shares his personal insight into learning the differences in the doctrine of grace. Jay reveals why the doctrine of grace is important in knowing the victim that was crucified and said to come back to life. Jesus spent 40 days with disciples teaching them the doctrine they needed to know to establish the Lord's church.  GUEST: J. Warner Wallace, Homicide Detective, Christian Apologist HOST: Paul Cardall, Dove Award Winning Musician / Producer  J. WARNER WALLACE J. Warner Wallace is a Dateline featured cold-case homicide detective, popular national speaker and best-selling author. He continues to consult on cold-case investigations while serving as a Senior Fellow at the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. He is also an adjunct professor of apologetics at Talbot School of Theology (Biola University) and Southern Evangelical Seminary, and a faculty member at Summit Ministries. J. Warner became a Christ-follower at the age of thirty-five after investigating the claims of the New Testament gospels using his skill set as a detective. He eventually earned a Master's Degree in Theological Studies from Gateway Seminary. J. Warner's professional investigative work has received national recognition; his cases have been featured more than any other detective on NBC's Dateline, and his work has also appeared on CourtTV and Fox News. J. Warner's book, Cold-Case Christianity, provides readers with ten principles of cold case investigations and utilizes these principles to examine the reliability of the gospel eyewitness accounts. Amy: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. Of all the texts on our reading list, the one that I'm guessing the most people have already read is Glennon Doyle's book Untamed. Since it came out in March, 2020, countless women have told me that I “have to read it,” and I'm so glad I finally did. And I added it to the reading list because I often get listeners saying “Ok, now that we know how patriarchy developed, now that we understand the depth of the problem, what do we actually do about it in our everyday lives? And that's what this book does, in a readable, relatable way, probably better than any other book on the reading list. And to discuss the book with me, I'm so happy to have the brilliant Lane Anderson. Hi, Lane! Lane:  Amy: Lane and I met in Jerusalem, when we were both studying abroad during college, and then we had English classes together after Jerusalem. But we had since lost touch and I'm so happy to have reconnected. (Invite to share bio) Lane: Bio I was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the oldest of four daughters. I moved to the Bay Area after college at BYU where I got my first job as a magazine editor there, then I moved to New York City for graduate school and I have been here in New York ever since. I have moved between working as a full-time journalist and working in academia for my whole career, and I'm now a Clinical Associate Professor at New York University, where I'm full time faculty teaching writing. I'm also a freelance journalist and my work has appeared on NPR, Psychology Today, Outside Magazine, as well as SL Trib and Deseret News there in Utah. I spent years writing hundreds of articles about poverty and social justice issues, and in the process I noticed that a lot of things that impact women and girls and small children and families gets under-reported, or not reported very well, and I started focusing on writing about those issues in particular. And then, about three years ago, I had my daughter, and those issues struck home even more--how systemic issues like healthcare, housing, lack of family supports that other mid-to-high income countries have like paid leave, subsidized child care, preschool, are making life in the U.S. really hard for women and parents. Around that time I met Allison Lichter, who was formerly at WSJ and WNYC, who is now the Director of the Journalism + Design program at The New School here in New York, at a journalism conference, and we discovered that we were both passionate--and mad--about a lot of these issues. So we started a Substack newsletter earlier this year called “Matriarchy Report” where we write about these issues and unpack how we got to this place in the U.S. where life is harder for women and families than it is in other countries, and solutions to make it better. Matriarchy Report has grown quite a bit since we started it and we just got a grant from the Solutions Journalism Network to grow it some more, so that's exciting. And that's what I work on and what I'm passionate about.  Last year during COVID my family moved back to SLC and rented a house there around the corner from my sister and close to my dad, which was the silver lining of being displaced during COVID. So I actually did move back to Utah for a year which I didn't see coming! But we returned to our apt. In New York in June, and now I live in Manhattan again with my partner and my three-year old daughter, and I guess I'm a bonafide New Yorker now because I've been here for over 15 years now and it feels like home. Amy: Thoughts on Breaking Down Patriarchy? Lane: Thoughts I love this project because it's about reading essential texts--which as a writer and a professor who teaches writing it's right up my alley. And it's also up my alley as a feminist. I was raised in the Mormon/LDS church, like you Amy, and I don't affiliate with the church any more, but I was in it for 30+ years and a lot of my loved ones--friends

Jon starts his journey by sharing the one single truth that has recognized and held onto throughout his entire life, “I am a child of God”. Through it all, good times and bad times, this single truth is what Jon has held onto and relied on to guide him in his decisions and efforts during his life on earth, and in dark times of depression and suicidal thinking. “I am a child of God”, is the message of Hope that has helped Jon not only overcome the odds to achieve the goals he set as a young boy to become an Endodontist professionally, but it is that very Hope that pulled Jon from the darkness of shame and worthlessness on the verge of Suicide, back into the Light.   Jon shares his inspiring story beginning as a young boy growing up in California, Mormon (LDS), in a family of 8. His family did not have much money and at times his Dad and Mom struggled to fill the pantry; however, what they did have... money could not buy, and that was the understanding that all people are Gods children and all people regardless of class, religious background, race, or politics are of infinite worth. Jon shares the way his parents lived and the example that they set of loving all without judgement and working hard doing good things shaped Jon into the man he is today.   At the age of 10, Jon's father sat his children down and talked to them about his life working late night shifts for a job that he didn't necessarily want, and that he wanted more for his children, believing a college education should be a goal for each of them. He let them know that he didn't have the means to pay for their education and inspired them to work towards a scholarship to help pay. Jon took this to heart and graduated high school with over a 4.0 GPA, and an opportunity on the track and field team at a community college in California.   As a high jumper in High school reaching a height of 6'7 he broke records at his school, but he knew that he needed to reach 7'0 to qualify for a scholarship and earn a full ride scholarship to BYU where he dreamed of going. So Jon went to work training hard which led to an opportunity to jump for a small community college, and after qualifying for the state finals he went on to reach a jumping height over 7'2 all while defeating his Nemesis, who he nicknamed “Sloppy Joe”. Jon shares and incredible experience he had with Prayer during His last two jumps which won him the championship and earned him a spot on the BYU Track and Field team with a full ride scholarship. After the match and his incredible experience during his last two jumps and prayer, Jon found a quite place near the stadium and in complete humility gave thanks to God.   During college he met his incredible wife Dorsey and they began a family of their own, things just seemed to be going right for Jon, but during his residency Jon was upended by sudden and unjustified feelings of “Doom”, PTSD from 9/11, and feelings of no personal value, causing Shame and Depression which lead to Suicidal Thinking. Jon talks about how at his “Rock Bottom” not even caring how ending his life would affect his family, that's when he knew that he needed help. Throughout Jon's story you will see clearly how God put people in place and like lighthouses leading a ship to shore these people showed up for Jon to say or do something that helped Jon feel love enough to hold onto HOPE. That vey HOPE carried Jon through the Dark and into the Light, and He shares some of the valuable Gifts he received from the experiences during this painful time.   A few years later Jon achieved his Professional goal of becoming an Endodontist, and is now doing all he can to be somebody else's “Lighthouse” by paying it forward and living in gratitude each day. Jon is the Partner of 3 Endodontist offices in Northern Colorado and Wyoming.   Jon, thank you for sharing your story. You are a hero of mine and have been a lighthouse to me and my family. Thank you for sharing your Light!

There's a joke circulating around that "The only thing we can be sure Joseph Smith believed in was astrology, as he died wearing a Jupiter amulet." Although the rumor is likely false, it shines light on the deep mystery of the nature and psychology of Joseph Smith. The more we dig, the more mysterious Joseph becomes. https://www.fairmormon.org/answers/Joseph_Smith/Occultism_and_magic/Jupiter_talisman This paradox has been famously termed the "Prophet Puzzle" by non-Mormon LDS studies scholar, Jan Shipps, and continues to puzzle the field of Mormon Studies over 45 years later. https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/four-views-of-joseph-smith-historians-debate-the-prophet-puzzle/ In this episode, we discuss the competing, speculative theories on Joseph Smith's psyche in light of the problematic Book of Abraham translation and claim of historicity. While most "Prophet Puzzle" discussions lean on the Book of Mormon as its primary context, the Book of Abraham presents a more difficult problem in which we have more definitive historical knowledge about the translation process and artifacts. We try to tackle the unanswered questions that remain after one reads the LDS gospel topics essay on the Book of Abraham, in which the catalyst theory is proposed but no explanation given in reconciling Joseph Smith's claim that it was written by Abraham, "by his own hand upon papyrus". Do you think Don Bradley's prophetic explanation, Ann Tave's "inspired visionary" argument, Dan Vogel's "pious fraud" hypothesis, or Christopher Smith's conman claims hold any water? Let us know what you think of the Prophet Puzzle question in the comments.  *** Google Drive link to Alejandro's "catalyst theory" argument: https://bit.ly/3a4GJFU Why the CES Letter? Church College of New Zealand, which was opened in 1958, had a short life by education standards.  For 52 years it served the mostly Māori Mormon LDS community.  But, in a swirl of confusion, it was finally closed in 2009 and demolished. The school's motto was 'Build Now For Eternity' which motivated many Māori Mormons to contribute money, material resources and years of labour for the building of the school.  Today, despite promises to develop the land and reinvigorate the community of Temple View, few of the promised improvements which were offered to replace a much-beloved school have been realised. Peter Witehira,  former Chair of the Temple View Heritage Committee, and Rā Puriri join me to discuss the beginning and end of Church College of New Zealand. In this episode I discuss the most recent, senseless, tragic death of Andrew Carr, of Fort Worth, Texas, who died this past Saturday in Mexico, from carbon monoxide poisoning. These horrible deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning have been going on at least back to 1975 & probably far beyond that. How many of these deaths happen & we don't even hear about it? How many missionaries get sick, are hospitalized but don't die, that we don't hear about? Here we are in 2019 & it's STILL happening? WHY? Because the Mormon Prophet Russell M. Nelson & the other 14 thugs don't give a damn & don't want to spend the money(less than a million dollars) to buy a cheap carbon monoxide/smoke detectors at Wal-Mart for $17. They could get an ever better price than that, buying 30,000 + of them!I discuss multiple instances of missionaries dying from carbon monoxide in Argentina, Taiwan, Romania & now Mexico, just to mention a few. Meanwhile, Nelson & other 14 thugs & frauds are flying around the world on private jets, staying in 5 star hotels, Presidential suites, eating catered food & driving around in chauffeured driven luxury cars, with bodyguards to protect them & with the best medical care tithing money can buy them! Can anyone else see a problem with this?!! Why don't missionaries have bodyguards & safe food & water to eat & drink, like their "humble" leaders do? Because to the Mormon hierarchy, they are nothings, nobodies & the big 15 don't give a rat's you know what about them. This is criminal & I consider it to be murder & their hands are covered in blood! At least Criminally Negligent Homicide, right? There has to be a chargeable offense here folks! The big 15 should all be arrested, charged, convicted & imprisoned for their neglect, abuse, sickness & deaths of their missionaries. Let's hope we all live to see that day as justice needs to be served to these arrogant cult leaders who don't care about the lives of young men & women, who are naively in their trusted care, with their whole lives ahead of them. Their parents trust that they are safe & in good hands, as did my parents & in reality; they are all subject to death at any moment because of the Mormon Hierarchy neglect, that are too damn cheap to give them the very basics of life, like clean food, water, decent apartments & something as simple & basic as a carbon monoxide/smoke detector! My parents NEVER would've allowed me to go on my mission if they had known this or brought me home immediately if they'd know it during my mission. Please share the links to this episode as far & wide as you can across the globe, so that these nasty, filthy, vile Mormon/LDS conmen, committing criminal activities daily, will finally be exposed & brought to justice! Thanks again everyone for your support!

I talked about the Mormon/LDS church cruelly & unexpectedly canceling the Days of '47 Youth Parade after 80 years of tradition, starting next year, for no good reasons, that couldn't have been easily fixed. The current Prophet Russell M. Nelson & his legal, cold & emotionless sidekick Dallen Hoaks just don't care anymore about tradition & are scrapping anything that isn't profitable or that takes too much effort or time. Then I discussed a missionary from Utah that recently, tragically died falling off a cliff in Australia while whale watching & taking a selfie. Comments have stated, as usual, "that he was needed more on the other side", which of course makes no sense. I also talked about and updated the story of the Mission President in Austrailia that recently had a serious and tragic bike accident & broke his neck & is now paralyzed from the neck down.(which no one else is talking about=not faith promoting) Then Demon of Kolob called in to chat for a while about various topics, including Pioneer day, Mormon sex abuse, Mormon "Heartsell"(using all emotion), etc & the tragic shooting death in a Mormon church located in Fallon, Nevada, during Sacrament meeting, Sunday, July 22. It is a diverse panel representing varied voices within the millennial religious experience who will discuss topics relating to their personal spiritual journeys For our first episode, we introduce our three co-hosts (Chris, Michelle, and Blake) and we chat about how each of them got to where they are now in relation to spiritual/religious identity, practice, and beliefs. Chris, Michelle, and Blake all grew up Mormon (LDS). But various experiences and issues throughout the years have made them feel more distanced from Mormonism in a variety of ways. While briefly summarizing the stories surrounding these experiences and issues, we end up discussing transcendence, zealous Mormon evangelism, missionary service, ritualistic Temple worship, historical/doctrinal study, and institutional disillusionment. In the future, we hope to explore some of these faith transition-related topics, both inside and outside of Mormonism, in much more depth. But to build the foundation for those conversations, we wanted to start with a robust introduction of our “origin stories,” so to speak. Enjoy!
