Mexico's sweeping overhaul of the country's court system took effect last month, in the final weeks before President López Obrador handed the keys of the National Palace to his mentee and successor, President Claudia Sheinbaum. Mexico is now one of the few countries in the world that elects its judges, including at the Supreme Court level, by popular vote, rather than by appointment. This widely controversial move has led to protests by the federal judiciary, as well as criticism by the United States, Mexico's top trading partner.   What exactly does the overhaul entail, and what's next? Back on the podcast to discuss are Javier Martín Reyes, a researcher and professor at UNAM, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and David Gantz, the Baker Institute's Will Clayton Fellow in Trade and International Economics.   For more information on the Baker Institute Center for the United States and Mexico visit our website, and follow us on X/Twitter and LinkedIn. In this episode we embark on a journey to explore the enchanting areas of Lisbon Portugal. Nestled along the scenic coastline of the Atlantic Ocean, this is an area that seamlessly weaves together rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Join us as we meander narrow cobblestone streets, listen to the soul stirring sounds of Fado music and taste the wonderful culinary delights of this coastal area in Portugal's capital city. Grab your passport and pack a bag as we explore the areas surrounding Lisbon Portugal. If you are reading this on a podcast platform, click here to see the full shownotes. Some links are affiliate links. See our disclosure. Tips for Booking flights: when traveling to Portugal, or anywhere in Europe, the flight to you final destination may not be the best price or use of points so be sure to check to see if flying into another city in Europe and then buying a ticket on a different airline may be a better option. We highly recommend these tours to see more of the area if you don't have a car, don't want to drive, or want to take a tour to learn more about the area! Arrabida and Sesimbra Day Trip from Lisbon with wine tasting Fatima, Nazare, and Obidos Day trip from Lisbon Sintra Tuk Tuk Tour The main attractions in Sintra you'll want to see are: Park and National Palace of Pena Castelo do Mouros Cabo da Roca which is a lighthouse and viewpoint on the westernmost point on continental Europe Quinta da Regelaria (UNESCO World Heritage Site) Sintra National Palace See all Sintra tours here You'll also want to try the famous Portuguese Custard Tarts - called Pastel de Nata and in Sintra stop by Pastelaria Vila Velha for them. You had to take a number and wait your turn which is quite common when seeking out these tasty treats. Where we stayed in Cascais: Grande Real Villa Itália Hotel & Spa - fitness center/spa/pool/walking distance everywhere and overlooks the ocean and is a great location for exploring the town but also being by the water Other places to stay in Cascais Here's a few things worth exploring as I have spent hours just wandering this beautiful town the park - Parque Marechal Carmona - has lots of little trails and lookouts and if you have kids - playgrounds there's Lots of Museums you could pop into - Santa Marta Lighthouse Museum, Santa Maria House Museum, Musee Condes de Castro Guimaraes Then there is a walking/bike path up the coast starting at the Farol Museum. You can rent a bike in town like I did and ride all the way to Praia do Guincho - which is about 8 Km one way. Some sights on the way is the Boco de Inferno - a famous blowhole - this is right across where where we stayed so we highly recommend the Grande Real Villa Itália Hotel & Spa as it is a great location for exploring but has great views too Check out all the Things to do in Cascais, Portugal Restaruants and shops at the Casa da Guia - so many of them overlook the ocean so we have been to several for both lunch and dinner Monte Mar for fresh seafood was recommended to us by a local so be sure to put it on the list and make reservations in advance to be on the safe side to be able to get in Moules & Gin is my absolute favorite - i still think of this place. The restaurants served fresh mussels either with pasta or fries and then Gin and Tonic to drink. You can get the mussels seasoned dozens of ways or have your choice of dozens of kinds of gin but That's it. so if you don't like mussel or gin then you're out of luck. Simple and delicious. There are Lots of restaurants at the Marina de Cascáis and it is always nice to sit out by the water Baia do Peixe - we also ate here for lunch on the balcony that overlooks the beach in the downtown Cascais area. You can also get the famous Pastel de nana in Cascais at NATA Lisboa at on the main street Passeio de Dom Luis I - there's also an adorable carousel at the end of this street in a park if you have children they would love it Things we did in Lisbon. There are so many things to do here so we by far did not get to explore everything. We spent a lot of time just walking around but be aware of the steep inclines. There are the trams which we might think of as streetcars so we used those a time or two but you can always get a uber as well. But highly recommending exploring by walking around as well. There's so many cool neighborhoods to explore and so much to see. We stayed at Portugal Boutique Hotel in Lisbon which is a boutique hotel near a train station. The tv was in the mirror which was unique. There was also an outdoor market nearby. It was in a good location for sharing and is a good value for the cost. Other hotels in Lisbon to consider Main attractions that we were able to explore: Sant George's Castle( Sao Jorge Castle) - is an 11th century Moorish castle and royal residence with so much history and amazing views of the city from above. You can also see the peacocks and there was a wine truck outside. The Jeronimos Monastery - this is a late gothic monastery which has both archaeology and maritime museums. I highly recommend that you book a timed ticket in advance as this is very popular and the wait times can be long. We caught this is the gorgeous late afternoon golden hour light which is spectacular on the stone Nearby is the famous place in Lisbon for the Pastels de Nata - Pasteis de Belem making them since 1837 - there will be a line but worth the wait to try theirs Definitely Try to find a Fado show somewhere like we did a bar or restaurant or again if you like to plan ahead get tickets to Fado in Chiado Show. Another recommendation that we did not do here would be one of the hop on hop off buses so that you could see all of Lisbon that way. It is very hilly so this is a good option to walking to get an overview of the city and then be able to get off to see the stops. Check out Hop on Hop Off Bus in Lisbon here. Where to eat in Lisbon: Pasteis de Belem for the Pastels de nada Beher Autentico - this was a few blocks from our hotel - fresh sliced jamon sandwiches on fresh bread Also check out the Time Out Market in Lisbon if you like indoor food halls with a variety of food options and vendors. Be sure to also check out the Santa Justa Lift that connects the lower streets with Carmo Square and offers views of the city. What to Pack (see our favorite travel things here): 1st trip we took was in Feb/early March 2nd trip was in late April/early May so it was definitely warmer Walking shoes Sandals Bathing suit for our trip in Feb/march we mostly needed pants, warmer layers such as a light sweater of denim or packable jacket , scarf for the wind, jacket, I like to do leggings or black travel/golf type pants for travel but pants or jeans would be fine too for our trip in late April we needed short sleeves but it does get very windy along the water so having a jacket handy would also be helpful then lighter pants - note that shorts are to as common in europe any time of the year and you will need to have knees and shoulders covered for going into churches so always keep that in mind. if you plan to rent a bike then athletic clothes, leggings, layers and tennis shoes Sunglasses Camera There was no way that we could cover everything so all be sure to check out Rick Steves Lisbon or Portugal would be a great resource to plan your trip as well. An Interview With Debbie Baker, The Property Girl, and Jeff Musto, The PV Kid about Rental Properties in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Also, Puerto Vallarta Celebrates Mexican Independence Day with a 4 Day Celebration. Listen to The Podcast Hello fellow travelers, welcome this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel show. I am your host Barry Kessler and I am just so happy to be introducing you to my favorite vacation destination, and maybe even yours, Puerto Vallarta Mexico. That music you were just listing to is performed by Alberto Perez, the owner of the La Palapa Group of Restaurants. Those are La Palapa, The El Dorado Restaurant, and at night for dinner The El Dorado transforms into the ever so romantic Vista Grill with those dramatic views of the Los Muertos Pier all lit up at night in beautiful colors. Of course, at La Palapa you can enjoy that same view of the Los Muertos Pier all day long for breakfast, lunch or dinner, seated with your toes in the sand right at the water’s edge. It’s so romantic, it’s so Puerto Vallarta my friends! Today we will be talking with two great guests, both are involved in the property rental business here in Puerto Vallarta but first, what’s happening this week September 12, 2017. Puerto Vallarta Celebrates Mexican Independence Day [caption id="attachment_1482" align="aligncenter" width="605"] Independence Celebration Puerto Vallarta[/caption] We will be celebrating Mexican Independence Day in Vallarta, and in true Mexican fashion, it’s not just one day, we will be celebrating for four days! Things start up Thursday, September 14, Day of the Charro, which is celebrated in many parts of Mexico. Charros are regal horsemen and women who dress so stylishly, and ride so smoothly, they are the elegant Cowboys and Girls, on Mexico. https://youtu.be/QbdmyKiMi60 Charrería is a tradition, which runs in families just like Tía Maria's famous mole sauce or Don Raul's special pozole. In other words, it is passed from one generation to another. As soon as a tot can seat a horse by himself, he becomes a little charro, or if a girl, she becomes an Escaramuza. Don’t miss this if you are in town. The charro wears a special suit. There are five styles of charro outfits and each one is chosen for its own occasion to be worn. One can go from a working suit through dressy, formal, elegant and all the way to black tie. The color doesn't seem to be as important as the cut of the suit. The jacket is snug fitting and comes only to the waist. Some are heavily embroidered. The pants have slim, tight fitting legs; the dressier ones have gold or silver buttons running down the outside length of the leg. The suit is worn with a short boot, not the regular cowboy boot. A bow tie, white shirt, and the typical big brimmed, embroidered sombrero tops off this costume. Vallarta’s City Center will host a parade of associations of charros that ride on horseback through the main streets along the malecón as those along the route, applaud their horsemen and women parading through town in their fine outfits. If you want to learn more about the traditions of these horsemen and women, The Charros, I have a link to an article written back in 2007 by [caption id="attachment_370" align="alignright" width="212"] Drama & Diplomacy in Sultry Puerto Vallarta[/caption] Jenny McGill, and if you have listened to my older podcasts, you would know that Jenny McGill and her husband Howard, moved to Puerto Vallarta in 1973, where she served as the U.S. Consular agent for 14 years. And she wrote the book, Drama and Diplomacy in Sultry Puerto Vallarta. A book all Vallarta lovers would really enjoy. Interesting to note here, but Pamela Thompson of Healthcare Resources Puerto Vallarta, a friend of the show who talked with us about medical tourism in Puerto Vallarta in an earlier episode, does lots of the things that Jenny did back in the day. I bet Pamela could write a pretty juicy book herself, but she would probably have to move out of town forever. Never mind Pamela.   Anyway, Jenny is gone now but her writing lives on and I have that link to her article all about the Day of the Charro. No JR, not the day of the churro, That’s every day in Mexico. That reminds me, one day I’ll introduce you to the Churro guy in Emiliano Zapata. But I digress. Where were we? Oh Yeah! http://www.mexconnect.com/articles/1579-september-14-day-of-the-charro We continue with the celebrations. On the 15th, day before Independence Day, the Independence Day festivities will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a Commemoration of Independence at Plaza de Armas. Then in the evening, at 7:30 pm, the plaza will be hosting musical and dance performances until 10:00 p.m. At 11:00 p.m. the military protocol act of the Cry of Independence will take place at Presidential Plaza, followed by fireworks at midnight. What is this Cry of Independence? The Cry of Dolores or in Spanish, Grito de Dolores,  is a historical event that happened in Mexico in the early morning of 16 September 1810. A Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bell of his church and gave the this proclamation,  (call to arms) that triggered the Mexican War of Independence. 'My children: a new dispensation comes to us today. Will you receive it? Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen three hundred years ago [caption id="attachment_1481" align="alignright" width="300"] Father Hidalgo[/caption] from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once... Will you defend your religion and your rights as true patriots? Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe! Death to bad government! Death to the Gachupines! or Native Spaniards. This happened in the state of Guanajuato within the small town of Dolores, now known as Dolores Hidalgo. And although we aren’t sure of the exact words, they were never written down, they were pieced together by those assembled who could recollect the words. Finally after years of struggle, In October of 1825, the 16th of September began to be observed as Mexico's Independence Day. And every year on the eve of Independence Day, the President of Mexico actually re-enacts and recites the Grito from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, while ringing the very same bell that the Catholic Priest Hidalgo rang in 1810. Pretty cool. So you may want to catch that ceremony here in Vallarta. I’m guessing it’s going to be pretty cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz-D0GsLYO8 Next on the 16th, the official Independence Day, a parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. along Calle Morelos in downtown. Then, beginning at 8:00 p.m. at the Arches on The Malecon, you can catch musical performances by Gypsy Rumba a great group whom we’ve talked about with Gary Beck, Remember? And Valentina González. Fun times! [caption id="attachment_1483" align="aligncenter" width="601"] Taco Festival[/caption] And finally, on the 17th, since you haven’t had enough party, you can enjoy the Taco Fair in Lázaro Cárdenas Park, from 5 to 11 in the afternoon, they will be selling traditional tacos such as steak or pastor, or lobster and / or shrimp, and more. Just make sure you wear a broad rimmed hat and sun block cuz it’s going to be hot boys and girls. Got an email, no actually it was an iTunes review the other day from listener Polly MB in Mexico, and she writes, Can you talk about San Pancho Beach next time? That would be nice. Well Polly, I have an episode planned with a day trip to San Pancho, and just because you asked, I’ll put that together for you in three weeks. I have a couple of other episodes that I want to get out first, but that one is coming soon. Speaking of mail and reviews, I got a surprise note that I thought I’d share with you. If you were listening last week, I was telling you a story about my buddy Debbie from Canadia. I referred to her, in a loving way of course as cheap Debbie. Remember? Check out this note from Tessa…. Hi Barry!!!! My mom sent me one of your podcasts to listen to, the one about the Uber in PV. Well...my mom is "Debbie G" aka "cheap Debbie" hahahahaha. I thought you might like to hear about something she did to me a couple years ago... Oh..do tell Tessa! My parents had been in PV for a couple of weeks and I flew in, they met me at the airport, we had some beers at the Oxxo as is our tradition, and then I was [caption id="attachment_1463" align="alignright" width="300"] Bridge at Puerto Vallarta Airport[/caption] expecting to go over the walking bridge and grab a yellow cab to the condo. Well, was I ever surprised when that didn't happen. My mom and dad thought instead of taking a cab to the condo, that taking the bus would be more "fun". Yes..."fun" is what they said. After a 4.5 hour flight and with a massive suitcase, they dragged me onto the bus because they thought it would be "fun". We take the bus a lot in PV and we love it, but after traveling all day, trying to adjust to the heat and humidity, and having a large suitcase in tow, I would not suggest anyone do this for "fun". Lol So Debbie, I’m just so disappointed in you Deb, do you hate it when someone calls you Deb? Cuz my wife hates it when I call her Deb…Debbie, Debbie, Debbie G. I thought for just a moment that you were normal, cheap, well frugal with a strong sense of tradition, but normal. But no. At least I know that your husband is in on it too. Torturing your unsuspecting daughter? Debbie!!!! You’re  a poster girl for my pet peeve. But a Bus…From the airport? Well, gotta say it’s great that we can get the inside scoop on airport transportation of all sorts wouldn’t you say? Thank you Tessa and Debbie. You both made my day!!! [caption id="attachment_179" align="alignleft" width="300"] Hall of Flowers Restaurant[/caption] Now on a more serious note, the Vallarta Botanical Garden needs your help. It seems that Trip Advisor has removed the Garden from their Puerto Vallarta page and moved it to the Cabo Corrientes Page. This is no Bueno for The Gardens. Bob asked me to share this note with you… Hola! For some unknown and very unfair reason, Trip Advisor has recently taken our Vallarta Jardin Botanico off their listing of attractions for Puerto Vallarta. The gardens have been open for 10 years now, and the management and staff have put a tremendous amount of work into making the gardens exceptionally beautiful, and making progress in protecting the natural beauty and heritage of this part of Mexico. One reward of all this endless hard work has been gardens Trip Advisor listing as the third best experience to have while visiting PV. As we all know, the gardens are a wonderful place to spend an afternoon and the restaurant always offers wonderful meals... losing their place on the Puerto Vallarta top ten listing is going to be enormously detrimental to the garden's admissions and bottom line. [caption id="attachment_163" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] The Vallarta Botanical Garden[/caption] Trip Advisor made the decision to change the Vallarta Jardin Botanico's location to Cabo's Corrientes for some sudden, arbitrary reason that they cannot even justify when other local excursions are still listed as being located in Vallarta, even though they are farther away than the gardens. Please add your name to the petition linked below to support the Vallarta Jardin Botánico's efforts to get their listing back as a well loved Puerto Vallarta attraction... [caption id="attachment_1484" align="alignright" width="300"] Click Here toHelp The Vallarta Botanical Gardens.[/caption]   If you remember, back in February I interviewed Bob and we talked a little about Trip Advisor…Listen to the audio..   So I have a link to the petition in the show notes for this episode. If you haven’t already done so, go there and sign it. It just takes less than a minute. Unless you type slow, then two minutes max. If you’re drunk, I can’t guarantee a time, just sober up and sign it already at puertovalartatravelshow.com.     Now, Sam, here’s my picks for taco stands and local food in the Romantic Zone and Downtown Vallarta… You need to go to the very north side of town, into the 5th of December neighborhood to get some great tacos. Pepe’s Tacos, across the street from the Pemex Station is great for tacos al pastor. Very close to that, El Carboncito is the bomb! They make fantastic tacos al pastor, everything [caption id="attachment_1518" align="alignright" width="300"] Taco Night[/caption] but they have a baked potato that you can have stuffed with meat and veggies. So good. Both of these establishments open at 5 and stay open till the wee hours of the morning. Also, in that same neighborhood, check out Lolitas for great home cooking. Also as you make your way south along the Malecon, on Libertad there is Una Familia, and they are also on the Malecon across from the lighthouse. Great view, and great cooking. Don’t forget Burros Bar on the beach! That’s a must Sam. For wonderful comida Corrida, Dianitas, Adobes, and Cenaduria Celia, in the south side of Vallarta, in the Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood. The three taco stands right next to the big Pharmicia Guadalajara are great. Any of them will do fine for you. Also Cisneros Seafood, and oh there are so many. That’s all for now Sam. [caption id="attachment_1496" align="alignleft" width="169"] Jeff Musto, The PV Kid[/caption] I’m gonna get a show with my favorite taco stands and restaurants together pretty soon. Hope that will keep you busy for now because we need to get to our guests, the kid and the girl. The PV Kid, Jeff Musto, and The Property Girl, Debbie Baker. No they don’t work together you guys. I had stumbled upon The PV Kid many times over the years as I searched for vacation digs in Vallarta, but never met him till my last visit, when I [caption id="attachment_1480" align="alignright" width="169"] The PV Kid[/caption] happened to rent an Airbnb from him. I was really glad he agreed to sit down with me for an interview.         [embed]https://youtu.be/LSxZ3Bez2Ww[/embed] Back in May, I did a meet and greet with listeners and my microphones at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse, and the interview I did with Jeff Musto, The PV Kid, was one of three interviews that I could keep, because, it was a drunken bunch. Welcome to PV guys. Anyway, let’s get right to the conversation I had with Jeff Musto, The PV Kid. Love Jeff, and love that dog. [caption id="attachment_1492" align="alignleft" width="300"] The PV Kid[/caption] [caption id="attachment_1494" align="alignright" width="300"] The PV Kid[/caption] Now my next guest is also in the property rental and management business. You can pick out her place of business easily because she has a cute pink VW parked in front of her office, along with a large pink pump, A high Heel Shoe. Debbie Baker is Known as The Property Girl, and you are going to meet her right now. [caption id="attachment_1503" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Debbie Baker, The Property Girl[/caption] Listen To The Podcast [caption id="attachment_1506" align="alignleft" width="300"] Debbie Baker, The Property Girl[/caption]   Well, that should do it for this episode of the Puerto Vallarta Travel Show. Living Proof with Bishop Joseph Castillo

Bishop Pavel Borissov Ignatov, a native of Sofia, Bulgaria has been a minister of the gospel for about 50 years. Born in 1948 he was raised and began his early ministry under the times of the Communist Regime. He began preaching in his house very young and took over the fellowship, which his father Boris had started. He is at All Nations Beijing this week to mentor us in the coming revival to China. Ignatov’s ministry of evangelism took him all over Bulgaria. In 1980 he was elected National Overseer (Bishop) of the Church of God – the largest underground fellowship in the country. The movement was going under tremendous persecution during those years and brother Pavel was arrested hundreds of times and his family was threatened by the godless atheistic regime. In 1986 Pavel was sentenced to exile and internment to the mountain village of Mihalkovo far away from Sofia; the sentence was for three years, but an international campaign was launched very soon for his release; that campaign was led by Human Rights organizations in Finland and Lee College (currently Lee University) in the United States. The Lee College students were wearing “Pray for Pavel” badges and writing letters to the Bulgarian government. After General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party Todor Zhivkov received over 36,000 letters in defense of Pavel, Zhivkov publicly denied that such man existed, but had him secretly released after only 6 months of exile. Pavel immediately resumed his preaching activities, which were marked by the remarkable growth of Pentecostal conversions among the Bulgarian Roma (Gypsy) minority. Pavel was in the middle of the public protests for democratization of the country, which eventually brought about the end of authoritarian one-party rule in Bulgaria at the end of 1989. Pavel’s home church came out in the open in 1990 and celebrated Easter that year in the largest auditorium in country in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. For the following 5 years Bulgaria experienced tremendous and fast changes; the churches had a spiritual harvest and explosive growth. Brother Pavel’s congregation continued to have Sunday worship services in the National Palace of Culture for about 10 years as he pastored the largest in the country where regular attendance was 1500- 2,000 people every Sunday. Then brother Pavel decided to branch out his large congregation and start a number of new churches proliferated all around Sofia. The number of believers doubled in a short period Pavel has hosted well-known international ministers like Bert H. Clendennen, R.W. Shambach, David Hathaway, Ray H. Hughes, Phil Driscoll, Cliff Richards, Perry Stone, Tommy Tenney, Floyd Lawhon, and many others. Magazines like Charisma, Christianity Today, and the Church of God Evangel have published articles on r Pavel’s ministry. From 1992 to 1996 he served on the Church of God Executive Council in Cleveland, TN, USA. In 2005 Bishop Pavel Ignatov withdrew from the administrative leadership of the Bulgarian Church of God, but continues to preach and pastor his local congregation in Sofia, and conducts teaching and preaching activities in Bulgaria and internationally. He has since then written 4 books on Bulgarian Evangelical and Pentecostal history and spoke at Christian TV shows and conferences. Bishop Pavel Ignatov is a powerful preacher of the gospel and a man of prophetic insight and wisdom.Support the show (https://www.theriverchurchtulsa.com/donate)

Why Are Our War Criminals Still Walking Free?

If the Guatemalans can send their war criminals to jail, why are ours still walking around? It just so happened I was reading Greg Grandin's new biography of Henry Kissinger while the news was breaking in Guatemala. After thirty years of civil war, and many years since in which killers have transitioned seamlessly from being murderers to making money – and staying in power. Guatemalans said no more. For months, they held mass protests demanding prosecutions in a corruption scheme that rigged trade deals for kickbacks and robbed one of Latin America's poorest nations of millions. This August hundreds of thousands of people from all sectors of Guatemala's very divided society surrounded the National Palace and refused to leave until Congress voted to strip Molina of immunity from prosecution. Which the Congress did, on fear of being on the wrong side of an angry populace just weeks before a national election. What sent President Perez Molina and a slew of his cronies to jail was a mountain of financial and banking evidence. But what kept people in the streets was Molina's history in the military. As a young commander, he'd led an Army unit in a particularly brutal region, that saw tens of thousands slaughtered – mostly by the military- in the civil war. Impunity corrodes democracy they said. We can't call ourselves a functioning democracy when we oligarchs evade the rule of law. Molina was just settling into his jail cell this September as Chileans marked the 42nd anniversary of the Coup that Henry Kissinger helped to mastermind. Kissinger's gotten away with murder there, as well as in Vietnam and Laos and Cambodia, Southern Africa, Indonesia, Iran. His shadow extends over today's devastated Middle East, writes Grandin. And still he's walking around free and smug at 92. As one columnist put it, “Guatemala finally lost its patience.” What the heck explains ours? You can watch my interview with Greg Grandin, author of Kissinger's Shadow this week on The Laura Flanders Show on KCET/LINKtv and TeleSUR and find all my interviews and reports at lauraflanders.com.
