Episode 189: FACING NUCLEAR WAR AFTER OCT 7

Israel is making the most important decision of its existence: how should they retaliate against Iran? It may seem as though they have been brought to this point by the Oct 7 massacre by Hamas, but the scene was actually set much earlier, when America, led by then President Obama, became BFF's with Iran, signed a dangerous Nuclear Treaty and began sending them billions of American taxpayer dollars. Today's podcast, hosted by Terrorist Therapist® Carole Lieberman, M.D., starts by describing the music video shecreated for Oct 7, that was played on a mobile billboard truck she traveled in on the 1-year anniversary in Los Angeles. (You can watch the video itself on her website: www.terroristtherapist.com). This sets the stage for the warnings about how close weare to nuclear war and how much is riding on this election. Iran has been shouting “Death to America! Death to Israel!”for years, but many Americans are still in denial. The number one deciding issue for voters should be which candidate's track record shows they are tough on terror. The problem is that while the Obama-Biden-Kamala White House has pretended to walk a fine line between being allies of Israeland allies of Iran, they have hidden the depth of their pro-terrorist leanings. Meanwhile, an Afghan in America plotted a terror attack on behalf of ISIS, to be carried out on Election Day. It was barely foiled by the FBI, but there are many more to come.

Today on Sojourner Truth: On Friday, January 22, a UN treaty outlawing nuclear weapons went into effect, having been ratified by over 50 countries. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was adopted in 2017, prohibits countries from producing, testing, acquiring, possessing or stockpiling nuclear weapons. The Treaty also outlaws transferring weapons and forbids countries from permitting any nuclear explosive device to be stationed, installed or deployed within their borders. It sets the goal of achieving a nuclear-weapon-free world, saying it would serve both national and collective security interests. Any use of nuclear weapons, it adds, would be contrary to the rules of international law for armed conflict. The Treaty is certainly groundbreaking. However, the United States and other major nuclear powers have not signed it. Some are protesting in the U.S. to press the Biden administration to sign the treaty. Our guest is Alice Slater, who serves on the Board of World Beyond War, is the UN NGO Representative of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a member of the Global Council of Abolition 2000. She serves on the Board of Nuclear Ban U.S. and works with the NYC Working Group for the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) in the Nobel Prize winning campaign to promote the newly passed treaty to ban the bomb. Indigenous nations in the United States hard-hit by COVID-19 are alarmed by the impact on their nations in terms of loss of life and also the threat to their culture, including maintaining their traditional languages. Our guest is Ethel Branch, the former Attorney General for Navajo Nation and founder of the Navajo and Hopi Families COVID-19 relief fund. Also, on Tuesday, January 26, the people of India celebrate Republic Day. The holiday honors the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, formally turning India into an independent republic. This was a major development for the people of India, who had suffered from hundreds of years of colonization under the British. Today, 71 years later, the people of India are still fighting for true freedom. Today, on the 71st anniversary of Republic Day, tens of thousands of protesting farmers plan to drive into India's capital city of Delhi on tractors. Many of them are women, who account for 70 percent of agricultural work, but are paid half as much as men. The farmers are protesting against agriculture reform laws passed by Parliament last September 2020. They are also demanding pay equity for women farmers and all agricultural workers. Our guest is London-based Didi Rossi, a member of Global Women's Strike, an international network campaigning for a living wage for mothers and other carers.

Support Pushback at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/aaronmate In his first major foreign policy move, President Biden has committed to renewing the New START treaty, which imposes the last remaining limits on the US-Russian nuclear weapons arsenals. The treaty was just days away from expiring -- and possibly setting off a new arms race -- after the Trump administration refused to renew it, and stalled negotiations. While saying that it will renew New START, the Biden White House also announced that it will conduct an intelligence assessment of various allegations against Russia -- including the SolarWinds hack, the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, and the debunked "Russian Bounties" in Afghanistan -- and respond with punitive measures if necessary. That pledge signals that despite Biden's nuclear diplomacy with Russia, more conflict could be ahead. Guest: William Arkin. Will New START nuclear treaty survive ‘hostile’ US-Russia relations?

The United States and Russia have about 91% of the world's nuclear warheads. And the arms control pact — the New START Treaty — between the two nations expires next year. The US wants to broaden its main nuclear arms control agreement with Russia to include all their atomic weapons, a US envoy said on Tuesday after talks with Moscow on a new accord.US Special Presidential Envoy for Arms Control Marshall Billingslea also said Washington would keep pressing China to join the talks on replacing the 2010 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) which expires in February.Washington wants Beijing involved because it says China is secretly racing to increase the size and reach of its nuclear arsenal, but Moscow favors a multilateral accord, possibly including France and Britain, Billingslea said."We, the United States, intend and believe ... that the next arms control agreement must cover all nuclear weapons, not just so-called strategic nuclear weapons," he told a news conference in Vienna that followed the talks there on Monday.Matthew Bunn is a professor of the practice of energy, national security and foreign policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School. He spoke with The World's Marco Werman about the implications of the New START Treaty.Marco Werman: What are the main points of the current agreement — the New START Treaty, or Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty — and would you say it’s been effective?Matthew Bunn: The New START Treaty has been highly effective. Both sides agree that the other is complying with its key provisions. It limits the number of deployed strategic nuclear weapons on each side. We don't face as many Russian nuclear weapons as we otherwise would. And it provides for an extensive set of monitoring and verification. So, we have more predictability and more understanding of what's going on.Related: China rebukes US envoy for photo stunt at nuclear talks with RussiaWhat's at stake with this week's negotiations? Where have the US and Russia settled at this point?Well, it appears they made some progress. They agreed to set up some working groups on particular topics and to meet again, possibly in July. So that's the good news. They have not yet agreed to any extension of New START. That's the bad news. The further bad news is that the United States is still insisting on China taking part. And China has no interest in doing so. China has less than a tenth as many nuclear weapons as either Russia or the United States. Related: US pulls out of Open Skies Treaty, Trump's latest treaty withdrawal So we've got a presidential election in November. What signs are you going to be looking for that New START is on track and there will be limits on nuclear arms?Well, I think we'll have to watch these negotiations very carefully. I doubt the United States will actually withdraw. But I think that letting the agreement expire — about two weeks into the next president's term, by the way — is a real danger. My guess is that the Trump administration will not agree to extend New START until the last minute. And so it may be a scramble if Biden is elected, for him to get it extended in the two weeks after he takes office. And I think that scrambling, in general, is not the right way to manage nuclear weapons policy. But I think it's not just a matter of arms control. It's a matter of the broader set of measures designed to reduce the danger of nuclear war. Right now, we have the most hostile and dangerous US-Russian relations in decades. We have technologies that are evolving that blur — the line between peace and war — and make it more difficult to prevent escalation from conventional to nuclear war. So there's a big agenda of steps that have to be taken to reduce nuclear dangers. Ultimately, it's the governments that have to take action. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. On today's episode of Loud & Clear, Brian Becker and John Kiriakou are joined by Mark Sleboda, an international relations and security analyst, and Jude Woodward, author of the new book “The US vs China: Asia's new Cold War?”President Trump announced over the weekend that he would withdraw the United States from the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or INF, a decades-old agreement signed in 1987 between President Ronald Reagan and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Trump said that Russia had not honored the agreement, but NATO allies expressed shock at the announcement and said that they were not consulted. Web developer and technologist Chris Garaffa joins the show. Thousands of Central American migrants have entered southern Mexico on their way to the United States, despite President Trump’s exhortations that they are “criminals.” The president also threatened to cut off aid to any country associated with the caravan that’s not working hard enough to stop it. It appears that Donald Trump and the Republicans are, in fact, happy about this event and are trying to manipulate the optics for their own political benefit. Today we begin a daily segment on politics that we’ll run until election day on November 6. We’ll tell you about the closest and most important races around the country and the issues that affect those races. The story behind the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi continues to become more and more bizarre every day. Meanwhile, Turkish President Erdogan says that he will release in the next 48 hours all of the information his government has collected in the case. That is sure to be a major embarrassment to the Saudi government. Mohammad Marandi, an expert on American studies and postcolonial literature who teaches at the University of Tehran, joins Brian and John. A Russian woman has been charged in federal court in the Eastern District of Virginia for allegedly trying to influence the upcoming midterm elections by creating fake Facebook accounts and posting articles to “create and amplify divisive social media and political content.” Her alleged crime is that she posted articles related to gay rights, gun control, a recent women’s march, and the NFL’s national anthem controversy.
