From The Wine Conversation (wine-conversation.com)"Episode Summary: In our latest 10-Minute Masterclass, Jasper Morris MW, author of “Inside Burgundy,” takes a look at the appellation of Volnay, which is situated in the Côte de Beaune, a couple of villages south of Beaune itself. Historically, Jasper explains, Volnay has greater significance than most Côte d'Or villages, as the Dukes of Burgundy built a summer palace there – many of the vineyards have the title “Duc” in their name.Volnay's terroir is a mix of limestone and clay, but Jasper explains that Volnay is known for its more “active limestone, which means it comes through and gets into the vines itself and the wines, making them lighter, fresher and more perfumed.” There are more Premier Cru Volnay vineyard – 115 hectares, than Village Volnay, which has 98 hectares. The appellation runs from Pommard in the north to the south of Meursault, where the reds are known as Volnay Santenots. Some of the most well-known vineyards are around the village: Clos des Ducs, Clos de la Caves des Ducs, Clos du Château des Ducs, and at the southern end above the main road, the D973, you have Clos des Chênes, and Taille Pieds, whilst below is one of the greatest, Cailleret (of which, someone in the 17th century said, “If you don't have vines in Cailleret, then you don't know what Volnay is.”)There are not many producers in the village of Volnay itself, though some have vineyards there, such as Domaine Lafon. The name you will come across most will be the Rossignol family, in one form or another. Blue-chip names found there include Marquis d'Angerville, Domaine Michel Lafarge, Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, and Domaine De Montille. Jasper's tip for up-and-coming producers are Thomas Bouley and his cousin Kieran Bouley, as well as Georges Glantenay, and Bernard and Thierry Glantenay. “The one I like a lot and is excellent value and under the radar, is Domaine Buffet,” Jasper concludes.Volnay produces wines slightly lighter in colour, but “it's the perfume that makes Volnay so special,” Jasper notes. He advises, “one of the things I find particularly interesting is when the wines are young Volnay seems nice, or very nice, in the hands of a great practitioner, but if you happen to have a bottle of 30 to 40 years of age and you drink it in a mix of really top wines from the Côte de Nuits, Grands Crus from famous villages, the Volnay really holds up, it is more exciting and hedonistic with age.”Vintages to look out for: “2017 is absolutely delicious now,” he says. Jasper also suggests 2007,2010 and 2011 for being very attractive now. He also reveals “the years ending in nine are particularly good in Volnay.”"You can also find Jasper's guest appearances on other Podcast/Video channels we work closely with: The Wine Conversation 67 Pall Mall TV Bringing Burgundy closer to you with every episode!Subscribe to my website and get full access to my scores, tasting notes, detailed write-ups on producers and much more:https://www.insideburgundy.com/register/See all our events at: https://www.insideburgundy.com/all-events/Daily updates on our Instagram: @jaspermorris.insideburgundy

Tom Simoneau & Diane Bucher. Diane Bucher of Bucher Wines joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Tom Simoneau and Barry Herbst, wine buyer for Bottle Barn, are also in the studio. Diane and John Bucher were also on California Wine Country on this show back on June 13, 2018. Wine Enthusiast magazine has named Bottle Barn one of the three best places to buy wine in California and one of the best in the country. Harvest Fair is on display in the store and there will be a public tasting on October 15 in the store for the first time after two years. Sunday the awards were announced and Bottle Barn is stocking up with the winning wines. Tom Simoneau, as a small wine producer, appreciates how Bottle Barn supports the small growers and producers. Every year there is a handful of new wineries that Barry has never heard of before. Dan Berger has brought another cellar wine into the studio today. A 2020 MacRostie Pinot Noir from Petaluma Gap. It has great structure and great fruit. There is another MacRostie 2016 Pinot Noir, to taste later. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Diane Bucher and her husband John planeted the first blocks of their vineyard in 1997. In 1999 Williams Selyem bought the first fruit. Tom Simoneau just had a 2012 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir from the Bucher vineyard. They grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and sell all the Chardonnay. Ram's Gate is going to bottle a Bucher vineyard designate Chardonnay of 2021. They have 36 acres of Pinot and 2 of Chardonnay. On some nearby property they also grow Sauvignon Blanc and others. Their vineyards are all in the heart of the Russian River Valley AVA. Grand Cru Custom Crush They make their wine at Grand Cru Custom Crush in Windsor and that is where they hold their tastings too. There are about 20 wineries making wine there, at 1200 American Way in Windsor, one block south of the Russian River Brewing Company. They are in the warmer part of the Russian River Valley. Their Rosé, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir are on sale at the shop there too. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for the latest on the 2022 Summer Concert series. They open the Bucher 2021 Rosé of Pinot Noir. It is a saignée Rosé, with bright acidity, watermelon and granny smith apple. Dan calls it delicate and fragrant. At 13.8% alcohol it is “astounding.” It sells for $35 retail. As they open the next Pinot, the 2019 Bucher Vineyard Pinot Noir, a recent double gold winner from the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, which was announced just last Sunday. Bottle Barn has ‘em. It won double gold in a very competitive category, says Barry Herbst. Dan “Lay It Down” Berger says the flavors are incredible but it portends so much more. The next wine is the 2020 Bucher, focussed on the Pommard clone. This one reminds Dan of Burgundy. Their winemaker is Adam Lee.

Mike Cox Mike Cox, winemaker of La Prenda Wines, joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. They opened a tasting room in central Santa Rosa last year. La Prenda is owned by Ned Hill and his wife Erika. Mike grew up in the farming industry and started making his own wine fifteen years ago. Back then, the big wineries could dictate what they wanted and “the growers could be left holding the bag, in a tough vintage…” He began in 2020 as winemaker and for 25 years before that he was the winemaker at Shoup winery in Sonoma. Mike Cox grew up in Sonoma County, attended UCLA (in Chemical Engineering) and then took some courses at UC Davis. He took Fall quarter of 1988 off to work the harvest, then transferred to Davis. He was an “eager volunteer” and he especially loved working in the vineyard, and became fascinated with wine. The 1980s was “a fun time to be in the wine industry.” Dan Berger says that Mike Cox's 2021 wine “blew me away," and adds, "...spending time in the vineyard is the secret to this stuff.” Today Dan Berger has brought another cellar wine. Dan admits that some of them are junk, but this one today is great. They have all liked the old Sauvignon Blancs. This is a 2011 Simi Sauvignon Blanc. Its citrus notes have come on strong. It has not changed color at all. Simi winery has been around since before Prohibition. They are located north of Healdsburg and they have a nice tasting room. Dan especially loves their Merlots. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the best deals on wine, beer and spirits. Mike Cox says that La Prenda farms about 1200 acres and they pull some grapes for themselves. First they taste a Rosé of Pinot Noir. These grapes are from the heart of the south part of Sonoma County. The wine is bone dry with no residual sugar. Dan says, “…this is a real Rosé… delicious stuff.” The alcohol is modest, only 12 percent. “It's a purpose built Rosé.” It is a copper or salmon color. The next wine they taste is actually called “The Copper.” A friend told him about a white wine made in Friuli in Italy, which is a Pinot Grigio that uses the skins in fermentation. (Grigio means the color “gray” in Italian and the grapes are that color.) It produces wine that is grayish. Dan Berger says it is like a light red wine and it would go well with poached salmon. They taste a 2020 La Prenda Chardonnay, with light oak and good acidity. It is rich but not overpowering. Mike Cox says the acidity is the key component. He used fruit from different vineyards in order to balance the flavors that are typical of the different areas. Carneros brings acidity and Bennett Valley brings richness. Finally they taste a 2020 La Prenda Pinot Noir, from Carneros, in the hills west of Sonoma, called Thornton Ranch. The vines are from a Burgundian clone called Pommard. That is a district in Burgundy and the clone that comes from there has aromatic qualities. “…a really good clone from Burgundy.”

Another beautiful evening in Healdsburg,in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country!Tonight we will visit Valette Healdsburg and the Dry Creek Kitchen with John and Diane Bucher.First let's check out their website and learn about tonight's feature wines. Two great Pinot Noirs. The Bucher Vineyard 2018 Pinot Noir. Fragrant aromatics fill the glass with dark tones of red fruit, violets and subtle earth notes. The palate, bathed with vibrant acidity, reveals bright black raspberry, blackberry, plum, and hints of vanilla woven with traces of fine-grained oak. This blend of five Pinot clones from five of our vineyard blocks delivers layers of complexity, supple tannins, and a long, lingering finish—a classic Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. We first will open The Pommard clone Pinot Noir! The Pommard clone fruit provides tantalizing aromatics of bright raspberry and sweet cherry that layers with subtle spices and creamy mocha. A smooth entry flows into a mid-palate of supple tannins and rich oak notes wrapped around lovely dark lingering flavors—young, fresh-picked cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, and wild berries mingled with a touch of floral. A dash of cedar and anise appears and lingers with hints of minerality in the long finish. A plush wine with an elegance that turns heads and quickly empties glasses. We will start at Valette Healdsburg and then walk over to the Dry creek Kitchen. Valette was born from two brothers' lifelong dream of creating a unique dining experience in our hometown of Healdsburg. Our goal is to provide a canvas for local farmers, winemakers and artisans to showcase their crafts. Chef Dustin Valette began his restaurant career at the age of thirteen washing dishes at Catelli's in his hometown of Geyserville, California. Two years later he took an apprenticeship at Chateau Souverain, a Francis Ford Coppola Estate, where he worked under Executive Chef Martin Courtman, – beginning the twenty-plus year culinary journey toward his dream of opening a restaurant dedicated to showcasing the rich bounty and beautiful ingredients of his Sonoma County roots. Aaron Garzini began his restaurant career at just 14 years of age in the kitchen of Catelli's, a beloved restaurant in his hometown of Geyserville, California. A few years later, Aaron's brother, Dustin Valette, would follow, starting his culinary career in the kitchen of the same restaurant. Those early years began a trajectory leading the two brothers back to their roots with extensive experience and honed talents. While the experience sparked Dustin's passion to become a chef, Aaron set his sights on the front of the house. This restauirant is a must when visiting Healdsburg, and in fact is one of the great restaurants in the world. We will also feature the amazing Dry Creek Kitchen. Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen offers a three-course seasonal prix fixe menu where Chef Wyatt Keith presents a menu driven by the very best of Sonoma County. An inviting dining room is the perfect setting for vibrant Progressive American cooking and a wine list offering 500 selections. Patio Seating is available. Reservations are recommended. Episode Summary:-Jasper Morris MW, one of the world's leading experts on Burgundy, talks to Sarah Kemp about the region and the new edition of his award-winning book, Inside Burgundy, which has just been published. The first edition was published over ten years ago and Jasper discusses the updated book and the aspects of Burgundy which have been affected by climate change. In the new edition, he has gone into more detail on lesser-known areas, such as Monthélie, Fixin, and the Maconnais, and tells Sarah he regrets not being able to cover Beaujolais, but, he notes, “after 800 pages, a book has to be bound by hand.” The new edition is 150 pages longer than the first, and describes more than 1,200 vineyards and 300 wine villages, as well as appraising 700 domaines. He discusses how climate change has affected the vintages and discloses how the producers have responded to new conditions. Jasper explains how the changing patterns of airflow and wind has meant that the polar air currents are much weaker and are sliding down, and how there are now fewer southwestern winds, but more north and south, which are both dry. “People have to manage extreme weather events, plus a generally hot and dryer climate,” he says. Jasper also talks about the different measures the producers are taking to deal with the new climate conditions, including electric cables (which are already used in Chablis, but need large water supplies), mobile wind turbines and smudge pots, though, he adds, some producers are reluctant to use them, as they are petro-chemical based. The rise of Aligoté is something that Jasper tells Sarah he is in favour of, as it is properly Burgundian, and takes longer to ripen, which brings freshness and acidity. He believes that canopy management is crucial, and rootstock needs looking at, as some rootstock is failing. He reports that the picking window has changed and producers need to be ready to go earlier than before. “People are going to have to be a lot more intelligent about their picking dates,” he states. The use of whole bunch and partial bunch fermentation is also discussed. “2014 and 2017 had wider windows for picking because the sugars weren't galloping, and that's why those two are amongst my favourite two white Burgundy vintages,” Jasper reveals. He explains he likes early-ripening sites less than before and has found that Pommard “is hitting a wonderful streak of exciting wines.”Sarah asks him what had surprised him most when writing the second edition. “Aligoté has leapt forward,” he replies. They discuss premature oxidation and Sarah asks if it has gone away. “No, but it nearly has,” he replies. Jasper then talks about how the different vintages are developing for both reds and whites, which vintages to keep and which to drink, plus his favourites. Finally, the question of value is raised by Sarah and Jasper advises to look at some of the best producers in lesser communes. He also suggests there is true value to be found in Monthélie, Saint-Romain, the Hautes Côtes and the Maconnais.“It was this frost in 2021 which has made people realise quite how serious it is.”— JASPER MORRIS MWSubscribe to my website and get full access to my scores, tasting notes, detailed write-ups on producers and much more:https://www.insideburgundy.com/register/Daily updates on our Instagram: @insideburgundy#JMIBLive #JasperMorris

Vala välja! Veinikool #64: sommeljeede lemmik, noobel Pinot Noir

Vala Välja

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 10, 2021 107:23

Võtame veinikoolis lähema uurimise alla ühe šikima viinamarjade hulgast, Pinot Noiri. Sel teekonnal on Martinile ja Keiule abiks Pinot Noiri austaja, Eesti Sommeljeede Assotsiatsiooni sommeljee Igor Sööt. Pinot Noir kipub olema mari, millest tehtud veine hakatakse hindama ja mõistma, kui ollakse juba arenenud veinitundja. “Sex in the glass” on üks väljendeid, mida selle puhul kasutatakse. Aga alustame ikka algusest - kolm fakti Pinot Noiri kohta: Pinot Noir on üks tähtsamaid vahuveinide tooraineid. Kõige kuulsam neist on šampanja. 38% Champagne piirkonnas kasvavatest viinapuudest on just Pinot Noir. Enamasti on need vahuveinid valged. “Cabernet Sauvignon on loodud jumala poolt, Pinot Noir on loodud saatana poolt.” Mujal maailmas on Pinot Noir enamasti uhkusega sildil. Kasvatatakse lisaks Prantsusmaale veel peamiselt Šveitsis, Luksemburgis, Saksamaal, Austrias, Ungaris, Bulgaarias, Itaalias, Hispaanias (enamasti cava valmistamiseks), Moldaavias, Venemaal, Uus-Meremaal (seal on ta enimkasvatatud punane sort), Austraalias, USAs, Tšiilis, Argentiinas, Lõuna-Aafrika Vabariigis. Pinot Noiriga seostub populaarkultuuris nn Sideways Effect. Brennon talks about the processes leading up to the final product, and how certain environmental circumstances are reflected in the flavour and tannin maturity of their vintages. With gusto, he claims, "the '20 may be the best vintage I've ever been a part of." K Vintner recognises that Washington's environmental conditions are similar to that of France's Burgundy region, "within 1 degree Fahrenheit during the growing season, and sharing very close soil and drainage conditions. In fact, the 47ºN parallel runs right through both Pommard and the Golden West vineyard." While people usually think of pinot noir in the U.S., Brennon and his team want to change that, believing they have a lot to offer with the synergy of their Old World sensibilities and strong roots in the state.

For this episode, we time-travel across the ocean to chat with Charly Fatien of Maison Fatien who has been making wine in Burgundy for over 15 years. After starting his domaine with a small parcel of Gevrey-Chambertin “Bel Air” that was handed down to him through his family, he has progressively grown his portfolio. The wines of Maison Fatien are produced from almost 4 hectares of vineyards, worked exclusively by Charly, and the parcels are spread over prestigious appellations of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits: Gevrey-Chambertin, Beaune, Pommard and Volnay. We talk about his philosophy working in the vineyards and the stylistic decisions he makes along the way. He is also a négociant and regularly purchases additional grapes through a very judicious selection process. Charly’s impressive Cistercian cellars are all underground within the old walls of central Beaune - such a beautiful spectacle to see in person! It was an honor to have Charly on the show.

Françoise Vannier is a geologist who has studied and mapped the vineyards of Burgundy for multiple decades. She is based in France.Françoise discusses how she began her study of the vineyards of the Côte d'Or, and the surprising results that emerged from her research. She touches on both broad themes and specific, individual instances in her analysis of the rock types and rock weathering in the Côte. For example, she explains how the Côte de Nuits differs from the Côte de Beaune in broad terms, and then gives examples from specific vineyards and villages that illustrate those divergences. She emphasizes the importance of the both the parallel and vertical faults that exist in the Cote d'Or, and explains how the vertical faults are often where combes have developed, which are breaks in the slope (like valleys). Françoise highlights the importance of these combes to understanding the rock distribution of the Côte d'Or. This then plays into her contention that village names are not as helpful as one might think for understanding the vineyards of the area, as it is the combes that are the actual markers of where the rock distribution changes in the Côte d'Or.Françoise also emphasizes the difficulty and complexity of the topic of Côte d'Or geology, enunciating a number of nuances to the different rock types, and how they weather. She also points out that multiple rock types may be found within a single vineyard, as faults do not fall only at the borders of vineyards. Furthermore, the rock types do not nicely match up with the hierarchy of perceived quality of the vineyards, as the same type of rock may be found under both a villages vineyard and a Grand Cru. These realizations prompted Françoise to examine the historical, cultural, or climatic reasons why certain vineyards are in more esteem than others today, and she shares in this interview her thoughts on those subjects.Françoise speaks about numerous areas of the Côte d'Or in some depth, including areas within the boundaries of Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Pommard, and Meursault. She dispels common myths about the topic of Burgundy geology, and she gives examples of specific crus to illustrate many of her points. She also provides an examination of how human activity, in the form of quarries, house building, and clos (walled vineyard) construction has altered the Côte d'Or. Lastly, Françoise describes how the Côte d'Or differs from other areas of France which also feature calcium carbonate deposits, such as Champagne and St. Émilion.Anyone who wishes to understand Burgundy better will benefit from listening to this episode multiple times. This episode also features commentary from:Brenna Quigley, geologist and vineyard consultantChristophe Roumier, Domaine Georges Roumier

Our 20th episode is dedicated to Blaufränkisch, the widely acknowledged "grape of the future",  and its epicentre of production in the Federal State of Burgenland on the eastern edge of Austria.  Barbaresco or Côte Rôtie? Chinon or Pommard?  What does Blaufränkisch remind you of? We go straight to two of the world's greatest artists of the ancient grape to get the inside story: Roland Velich (Weingut Moric) and Uwe Schiefer. From his base in Mittleburgenland, casino croupier-turned winegrower Roland Velich is the counterculture Blaufränkisch rebel,  whose wines tread the line between radical and refined, drawing inspiration from ancient vines and techniques. His mission is simple: restore the fame and quality of  Burgenland and Blaufränkisch, once the jewels of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  We also pay a visit to Weingut Uwe Schiefer in the Eisenberg DAC. Schiefer,  a sommelier-turned-winemaker,  was compelled to leave an illustrious career Vienna to make wine from the schisty Eisenberg hill, a then unknown but now a coveted niche for Blaufränkisch, using a sommelier's sensitivity and sensibility with stunning results.  With nary a barrique in sight, we reach Schiefer's right hand man, Mark Matisovits for the back story and the current techniques that make for great Blau. Terroir, it turns out, does matter, and a great deal. Limestone, schist, clay, gneiss... all reveal themselves with clarion clarity through Blaufränkisch's DNA. For  wine students, we also cover the basics of the DACs of Eisenberg, Mittleburgenland, Leithaberg and Carnuntum, and reveal what an Uhudler is.

What Pinot Noir Should You Drink If You Love Cabernet? - Pinkies Up Ep. 3

Welcome to the newest episode of our wine series Pinkies Up! In this series, we answer questions 'normal' wine drinkers like Bridget have about wine. With Thanksgiving almost here, and Pinot Noir being our number one wine recommendation for the Holiday, we wanted to find out what Pinot Noir you should drink if you love Cabernet. Nick is a huge fan of Pinot, and Bridget is an avowed Cab lover. Nick tried three different approaches to finding a Pinot Noir that Bridget would enjoy. Here are the approaches (and wines) Nick tried out.Try a Pinot Noir that doesn't taste like a Pinot Noir! Meiomi Pinot Noir is a big, fruity wine that really has much more in common with a Cabernet than "traditional" Pinot Noir. Nick thought that perhaps the bigger body of this wine, combined with the ripe fruit flavors (both unusual for classic Pinot Noir) may be something that Bridget enjoyed.Try a Pinot Noir that has some tannin in it! Cristom Pinot Noir is made using techniques that bring out tannin on the back end even though it has a lighter body. Many Cabernet drinkers like the dry tannins at the end of the wine, and maybe a Pinot Noir with tannin would appeal to Bridget. Finally, we just decided to try a really expensive, really well made Pinot Noir. The Domaine Parent 'Les Epenots' Pinot Noir from Pommard in Burgundy, France is a big, masculine style of Pinot Noir that comes from some of the best lands for Pinot Noir you could imagine. Maybe just having one of the best possible bottles of Pinot Noir would be something Bridget would like.Listen to the entire episode to see what Bridget ended up deciding, and then try some of these approaches at home. Benjamin Leroux is the proprietor of the Benjamin Leroux winery located in the town of Beaune, in the Burgundy region of France. Benjamin explains how although his family was not in the wine business, he found himself working in a winery at a young age. He discusses his internships outside of Burgundy, at wineries in Oregon and Bordeaux, before talking about his start as the head winemaker at Comte Armand in the 1990s. Benjamin describes in detail the winemaking techniques he was using to make wine in Pommard during the nineties, and contrasts that with how he makes wine today and for the last several years at his own winery, also named Benjamin Leroux. He discusses what prompted him to make changes to his winemaking, and explains that every vintage must be approached as its own. Along the way, Benjamin addresses topics like hedging, organic farming, whole cluster, infusion vs. extration, and reduction. He also talks about some key vineyard areas of Burgundy, comparing and contrasting Vosne-Romanée with Gevrey-Chambertin, as well as Morey-Saint-Denis, and Chambolle-Musigny. Benjamin further talks about some appellations that he is particularly drawn to, like Blagny and Saint-Romain, as well as grape varieties like Aligoté. Take the demographic survey. Greg Morthole and Justin Seidenfeld both join Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today on California Wine Country. Greg Morthole is the winemaker from Davis Bynum Winery and Justin Seidenfeld is the winemaker for a new project called Rowen. It's a new single vineyard at high elevation which has been in the works for 15 years. Steve asks Greg Morthole He majored in natural sciences, he went to University of Wyoming but took many wine classes since then. First he went to Sacramento, then came to Sonoma County. It's very high and cold in Wyoming so they can't grow many grapes except in some western regions. There are lots of other cool climate areas in the US that are growing grapes now. Davis Bynum has a long history. He started in 1951 and they ran into Robert Mondavi, bought some grapes, and simply started. 15 years later, he was working as a reporter for the SF Chronicle and he had wine on the table his whole life. He was one of the pioneers of the Russian River Valley and Pinot Noir. Dan remembers some of the other pioneers in the early Napa and Sonoma wine business. As they taste a 2015 Chardonnay, Dan explains that it has a slight minerality that you don't see in California wine too often, because it is a risky wine to make that way. He likes the acid which Greg says is deliberate, they pick early. The flint and mineral will last, if it is aged. Justin Seidenfeld has been with the Rodney Strong Wine Estates for 8 years, overseeing their Sonoma wines. This project started in 2010, with planting and then design and construction of the new cellar. He now oversees all of Rodney Strong as well as this brand. It is the Cooley Ranch, a 20,000 acre property. They have a 70 year lease. They isolated the best parts of the property, to isolate the best 200 acres for vines. They planted a gamut of Bordeaux varietals with some Syrah and Viognier. They also taste a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir that Steve says is "silky." It's a 2016, Dan says the flavors are in the aftertaste, intense fruit, but it explodes on the finish. The pH is 3.55 which is low, and Dan says that means it will be stable once opened, and will still be good the next day. He thinks it may last 10 years in the cellar. Justin tells the first Rowen vintage was 2014 and this 2015 is their first national release. It has almost all sold out. It's 60% Cab, 20% Malbec and 20% co-fermentation Syrah-Viognier. Rowen means an unexpected windfall, since they didn't know how good the vineyard would be. Justin says, "when you grow grapes at high elevation, it's warmer at night and cooler during the day, which maintains natural acidity with good structure, good color, silky tannins without low acidity making it flabby." Dan says it's 14.5% alcohol but you don't taste the alcohol so much. The next tasting is a 2015 Pinot Noir from the Pommard clone, grown in Jane's Vineyard. Cola, orange peel, falling leaves, are all in the flavors. They use native yeast fermentations. Then they taste a wine called 2040 from Rowen. (It's the bottle on the left in the illustration above.) The peak elevation on their property is 2040 feet above sea level. They planted the crest of that hill with Clone 30 Cabernet (the Disney clone). Silverado vineyards in Napa is the source. The clones get names from the sources, such as the Coppola clone. Dan tells that it was Walt Disney's widow who founded the property. That clone is also called Clone 30.
