Here are 3 big things you need to know— One — The U.S. is moving toward direct peace talks in the Ukraine war, with President Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff headed to Moscow next week to negotiate a potential deal. A Putin advisor confirmed the visit as Ukraine says it's reached a common understanding with the Trump administration on the framework of an agreement. Trump says his 28-point plan has now been fine-tuned, even as heavy fighting continues in eastern Ukraine. Two --- The FBI wants to interview six Democrats featured in a video encouraging military members to refuse illegal orders. The FBI has reportedly been in contact with Capitol Police to get the interviews scheduled. President Trump has called for the lawmakers involved in the video to be punished. And number three --- Energy experts say Michigan's grid can support current demand but may need major upgrades as new data center proposals move forward. Projects in Saline Township and Livingston County have raised concerns about heavy power use, water demands, and strain on local wells. A national report shows regions with large clusters of data centers face higher outage risks during extreme weather. Analysts say Michigan isn't in that category yet but will need stronger transmission and distribution systems to keep pace.

When a new dollar goes into the capital markets, after being bundled and securitized and lent several times over, where does it end up? When society's total savings increase, what capital assets do those savings end up invested in? When economists talk about “capital assets”, they mean things like roads, buildings and machines. When I read through a company's annual reports, lots of their assets are instead things like stocks and bonds, short-term debt, and other “financial” assets - i.e. claims on other people's stuff. In theory, for every financial asset, there's a financial liability somewhere. For every bond asset, there's some payer for whom that bond is a liability. Across the economy, they all add up to zero. What's left is the economists' notion of capital, the nonfinancial assets: the roads, buildings, machines and so forth. Very roughly speaking, when there's a net increase in savings, that's where it has to end up - in the nonfinancial assets. I wanted to get a more tangible sense of what nonfinancial assets look like, of where my savings are going in the physical world. So, back in 2017 I pulled fundamentals data on ~2100 publicly-held US companies. Abigail Sawyer and Brian Turner of Advanced Energy United and the West Wide Governance Pathways Initiative launch committee discuss the renewed possibility of a seamless, westwide power market that would be governed by a regional organization. The recent passage of California's Assembly Bill 825 cleared the way for California entities to participate in such a market, which, with the load and resources of California's investor-owned utilities, presents a compelling opportunity for non-California entities. Brian also discusses lessons learned from market structures in the Eastern Interconnection and how the California Independent System Operator's extended day-ahead market hopes to avoid making the same mistakes.

China announced a new climate commitment under the Paris Agreement at last month's United Nations General Assembly meeting, pledging to cut its emissions by 7% to 10% by 2035. Many observers were disappointed by the promise, which may not go far enough to forestall 2 degrees Celsius of warming. But the pledge's conservatism reveals the delicate and shifting politics of China's grid — and how the country's central government and its provinces fight over keeping the lights on. On this week's episode of Shift Key, Rob and Jesse talk to Michael Davidson, an expert on Chinese electricity and climate policy. Hey hey BATT Family! Welcome to Episode 25, another of our top ten lists with a special guest. This time was us getting Mark's good friend Austin onto the show to discuss the Top Ten Best Games We Don't Play Anymore. It's a fun topic for people who've played as many games for as long as we have to break down. We hope that you have as good of a time with us as we had recording it. This is also an episode where, yes, we are dedicating it entirely to older games but honestly it's to remind ourselves of good memories as well as maybe intrigue you in some games you may have never heard of or just haven't gotten to try. We played them all to where we're done with them, but that certainly doesn't mean that you wouldn't enjoy them. If you do try any of them out, let us know! This is another moment of how long it's been since we recorded as well - this episode is coming out in September and I believe this was recorded back in May. The choices are all still valid, but the weird timeline jumps if you're listening to this back to back with Episode 24 is real. Regardless! Thanks for joining us on this final episode of Season One and we'll catch you on the start of Season Two on October 7th! --- This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro / How Do We Know Our Guest 00:02:24 - List Selection Criteria 00:04:26 - Scott's 10 (Ticket to Ride) 00:06:23 - Austin's 10 (Star Wars Rebellion) 00:07:28 - Mark's 10 (Modern Art) 00:09:52 - Scott's 9 (Mysterium) 00:11:40 - Austin's 9 (Ra) 00:12:53 - Mark's 9 (Dead Men Tell No Tales) 00:15:03 - Scott's 8 (Atmosfear) 00:16:57 - Austin's 8 (Power Grid) 00:19:31 - Mark's 8 (Formula D) 00:21:16 - Scott's 7 (Formula D(e)) 00:22:09 - Austin's 7 (Manhattan Project) 00:23:03 - Mark's 7 (Space Base) 00:24:57 - Scott's 6 (HeroQuest) 00:26:41 - Austin's 6 (Anachrony) 00:29:24 - Mark's 6 (Firenze) 00:32:09 - Scott's 5 (X-Men: Under Siege) 00:33:22 - Austin's 5 (Blood Rage) 00:36:00 - Mark's 5 (Quantum) 00:38:23 - Scott's 4 (Marvel Legendary) 00:40:47 - Austin's 4 (Kingdom Builder) 00:43:07 - Mark's 4 (Tortuga 2199) 00:45:34 - Scott's 3 (Talisman) 00:50:12 - Austin's 3 (Rising Sun) 00:53:03 - Mark's 3 (Mafiozoo) 00:55:53 - Scott's 2 (Dead of Winter) 00:59:18 - Austin's 2 (Five Tribes) 01:01:46 - Mark's 2 (Heroclix) 01:04:24 - Scott's 1 (Clue Master Detective) 01:06:19 - Austin's 1 (Food Chain Magnate) 01:09:30 - Mark's 1 (Android: Netrunner) 01:13:00 - Contact Info 01:13:51 - Outro --- Notes! 1) Pub Meeple is an EXCELLENT free resource for the board gaming community for those that want to rank their ... whatever grouping. It has an API integration to BGG to scrape their database and allow you to create a list to rank. It can be found at https://www.pubmeeple.com/ranking-engine. You can use it for things other than board games, but why would you want to? 2) Wish we had more to discuss about Manhattan Project, but Austin was the only one of the three of us to have played it. 3) The semi abrupt transition from Scott to Austin's number six was due to the dog getting up and barking like mad for a minute or two. We completely lost track of where we were, so we just moved on it seems like! 4) Turns out that Scott and Mark just kinda had a therapy session about Talisman and seemingly invited Austin to it. There was another about ten minutes on the game that got cut out. Austin's reactions were just too good to remove. 5) If you haven't heard it yet, go listen to Austin's story about Roads and Boats in our most recent Odds and Ends Episode: The Channel Update Edition. So far on Shift Key Summer School we've covered how electricity gets made and how it gets sold. But none of that matters without the grid, which is how that electricity gets to you, the consumer. Who actually keeps the grid running? And what decisions did they make an hour ago, a day ago, a week ago, five years ago to make sure that it would still be running right this second? This week on Shift Key, Rob and Jesse chat with Mark Rothleder, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the California Independent System Operator, which manages about 80% of the state's electricity flow. As the longest-serving employee at CAISO, he's full of institutional knowledge. How does he manage the resource mix throughout the day? What happens in a blackout? And how do you pronounce CAISO in the first place?Shift Key is hosted by Jesse Jenkins, a professor of energy systems engineering at Princeton University, and Robinson Meyer, Heatmap's executive editor.
