In this episode of the I Hate Numbers podcast, we explore "Inheritance Tax Exemptions and Reliefs." We'll explain the key elements that affect inheritance tax, including thresholds, gifts, and the importance of keeping records. What is Inheritance Tax?Inheritance tax began in 1986, replacing capital transfer tax. This tax applies to the transfer of capital value when an individual dies, certain lifetime gifts when the donor passes away within seven years, and some gifts taxed immediately. However, not everyone pays inheritance tax. Only estates exceeding the current threshold of £325,000, including any assets held in trust and gifts made within seven years of death, are liable for this tax.Key Exemptions to ConsiderMarriage and Civil PartnershipsMarried couples and registered civil partners can increase their threshold to as much as £650,000 when the second partner dies. To achieve this, the personal representatives must transfer the unused inheritance tax threshold from the first spouse or civil partner to the surviving partner. Additionally, any assets transferred between spouses or civil partners remain free from inheritance tax. However, this exemption does not apply to assets transferred to others.Exempt GiftsSeveral exemptions allow you to avoid inheritance tax on gifts. Gifts to your spouse, UK charities, national institutions, and political parties remain exempt from inheritance tax. Wedding or civil partnership gifts can also be given tax-free: £5,000 for each parent, £2,500 for grandparents or other relatives, and £1,000 for others. An annual exemption allows you to give up to £3,000 each tax year without inheritance tax implications. Smaller gifts of up to £250 per person per year are also allowed, but cannot be combined with other exemptions. Thoughtful planning of your gifts can reduce the taxable value of your estate significantly.Importance of Keeping RecordsAccurate record-keeping of all gifts and exemptions used is crucial. Such records assist executors or personal representatives in efficiently managing estate matters and claiming all available exemptions. Clear documentation simplifies the completion of probate forms and ensures you avoid unnecessary tax payments. Conclusion By understanding inheritance tax exemptions and reliefs, we make better decisions for our financial future. We encourage you to listen to the I Hate Numbers podcast for more insights on this topic and other tax matters. We've spent three episodes going over the reliefs in the road bed of the terrace of pride on Mount Purgatory. Now let's step back and look at the whole passage. Yes, its sweet. But also its curiously crafted problems. And the way it leaves us with more questions than answers, even though we're supposed to take away a very distinct moral lesson.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we run through this entire complicated passage in PURGATORIO.If you'd like to help out with the many costs associated with this podcast, please consider donating through this PayPal link right here. Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:12] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto XII, lines 22 - 63. If you'd like to read along, print it off, or continue the conversation with me, please go to my website: markscarbrough.com.[04:18] Biblical, classical, and historical figures flatten the interpretive landscape. Is Ovid of an equal weight to the Bible?[06:33] The passage is an acrostic poem: each tercet starts with a specific letter, here to spell out "man." But does that rhetorical technique actually work for this passage? Are these all "men"? Or even humans?[10:05] The tercets are thematically in sets of four: the judgment of God, of the self, and of others. Again, doesn't that flatten the moral landscape?[12:46] Do the penitents have to be this learned to glean the intended lesson? And is this the sum total of the reliefs on the terrace? Or are there more?[15:13] How can you be guilty of pride against or toward a God you don't know?[18:12] Where do these figures fit in hell? And while we're at it, where does pride fit in hell?[21:29] Why does this passage end with Troy, the noble city?[22:53] Why is this fake ekphrastic poetry?

Shaz is with a live audience and takes the example of a property entrepreneur who has 2 HMO properties that they want to change, sell and be able to claim entrepreneurs' relief Using this example Shaz explains the different options that will mean that the investor can ultimately sell and claim entrepreneur's relief if they follow the advice to meet the criteria set by HMRC KEY TAKEAWAYS If it's a trading business you can claim entrepreneurs' relief, but not if it's an investment business Using your annual exemption and selling in different years will bring a small saving Change an HMO property into serviced accommodation, run for 2 years to qualify and then claim entrepreneurs' relief and only pay 10% tax Entrepreneurs' relief has a lifetime limit of a million pounds Entrepreneurs' relief is applicable if you are selling your business or ceasing to trade SA property has to be commercially available for letting for 210 days every year and let for 105 days If you have more than one property you can use averaging out You can run as SA or move to serviced apartments/bed and breakfast for 2 years after which you can sell and claim entrepreneurs' relief BEST MOMENTS ‘If you are only paying 10% tax with entrepreneurs' relief it's a huge saving' ‘You have to offer more services than just a room' ‘Investment businesses can't claim entrepreneurs' relief' VALUABLE RESOURCES shaz@aaa-accountants.co.uk ABOUT THE HOST Shaz Nawaz is a serial entrepreneur; he owns five thriving businesses in diverse sectors.
More than 5 in 10 people do not claim the tax reliefs and refunds they are owed every year. This is one of the headline findings from the latest Taxback.com Taxpayer Sentiment Survey 2022. The tax refund specialist has released the results of the survey ahead of the second Taxback.com Employee Wellbeing Summit. Addressing the knowledge gap that exists for employees around tax entitlements and benefits is just one of the areas that will be explored on the day, with the focus of the Summit being primarily on promoting greater awareness of and offering guidance on developing wellness in the workplace – with emphasis on the workplace, financial, and emotional wellbeing. The Taxback.com survey also found that: Almost 8 in 10 people are unaware of Flat Rate Expenses (FREs) – the tax relief that exists to help tens of thousands of workers across a broad range of professions to offset the costs of uniforms and equipment required for the course of their work. 17% of people said they've only ever claimed tax refunds once in their life, while 11% said they only do it “very sporadically”. 1 in 5 have either not set up a Revenue online account and/or do not know what this is. The Issue of Tax Reliefs Barry Cahill, Director of Taxback.com's Employee Financial Wellbeing Service spoke of the findings, “It's surprising, and somewhat alarming, to find that almost half of us are still not claiming back our tax refund at the end of the year. This figure should be much, much higher. However, the data speaks for itself – it's clear that people remain uncertain, reticent, and/or unwilling to approach the topic of their taxes, often for fear of the process complicating their lives more. This is a misnomer we very much want to quash as, for the vast majority of people, we find that there is money owed to, not by, the taxpayer. We have witnessed this reluctance on the part of the employee through the rollout of our Employee Financial Wellbeing initiative. This program was launched last year, in order to equip employees with the knowledge and know-how to enable them to put their personal tax affairs in order and to ensure they are in receipt of any and all refunds and reliefs available to them. Our discussions with employees showed that people are slow to act when it comes to taxes. However, we have since submitted tax returns for thousands of workers who participated in the programme and the average refund amount received to date amounts to €1,250, with the highest individual refund being €7,400. This is a lot of money to be left in the hands of the taxman. Furthermore, the longer you leave it the less likely you are to apply at all, and you also run the risk of going past the 4-year deadline.” The Summit Taxback.com say the impact of the pandemic and subsequent return to work has changed norms within the workplace, resulting in a new focus on wellbeing among the workforce and business leaders. The Employee Wellbeing Summit 2022 aims to explore these issues in detail, as well as highlight actionable tools for employers to help them, support staff, through the transition. Mr Cahill commented, “From an HR and management perspective, now more than ever, supporting the emotional and financial wellbeing of your employees is crucial and has a very positive impact on both employees and your business. Our panel of experts aim to delve into the topics of the workplace and financial wellbeing with the aim of helping businesses learn how they can incorporate different initiatives into their wellbeing programmes in order to improve the personal and financial wellbeing of their team.” Speakers at this year's Summit include Eoin McGee, Principal at Prosperous Financial Planning, Fania Stoney, CEO & Co-Founder of Healthy Place to Work, Triona Desmond, Group Wellbeing Partner at AIB, Claire Hellen, HR Strategy Specialist at Ibec, and Joanna Murphy, CEO at Taxback.com.

Is your brokerage fully maximising the support you can give your clients and any changes they have had to make to their process during COVID? Have you had to innovate your business in any way? What relief could you and your clients be eligible for? On today's episode, we're excited to be chatting to Director of Incentives and Reliefs at Markel, Justine Dignam. Justine is responsible for driving the development, growth and management of the tax incentives and relief division of Markel Tax. She joins us to discuss who, why, how, when and what is R&D Tax Relief and how it applies to the insurance industry. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: There are tangible ways in which insurance brokers and clients of insurance brokers should be looking at their tax position. R&D Tax Relief is provided by the UK government and is one of the UK's most generous tax reliefs. There are 6 million businesses classified as UK SMEs and only 60,000 claim enough for R&D Tax Relief – this means a lot of businesses are not aware of this. If you've recently pivoted your business and you've had to develop processes, planning and testing into your development, it's worth having a conversation about R&D Tax Relief. BEST MOMENTS: ‘'The analogy that I always work with is a little bit like if you've got heart condition and you went to your GP and said, I really feel that I've got a problem with my heart, you certainly wouldn't expect your GP to say ok, hop on the bed, and I'll take a look - you would expect that they would refer you to a cardiologist to give you specialist advice. That's how we work with our referral partners throughout the UK.'' ‘'Going back to that uncertainty, that's really very important because around that uncertainty is where the R&D kind of development work is incurred.'' ‘'If somebody has had a significant spend on a project where they've had to overcome some technical uncertainties or made advances in processes, then that's definitely worthy of a conversation. We can ascertain whether somebody's got a valid R&D claim within a 10-15 minute telephone conversation.''
