Top Credit Report Myths with Neile Simon

What do Bigfoot and credit reports have in common? They're each the subject of many myths. We don't know much about 8-foot furry creatures, but we can dispel some of the folklore about credit and credit reports. Neile Simon is here to help us do that today.Neile Simon is a Certified Credit Counselor with Christian Credit Counselors (CCC), an underwriter of Faith & Finance. If you've ever wondered whether closing a credit card boosts your score or if credit counseling hurts your credit, you're not alone. Let's dive into these common misconceptions and separate fact from fiction.Myth #1: Paying Off Debt Instantly Improves Your Credit ScoreIt's a common belief that paying down debt will immediately result in a perfect credit score. However, credit improvement takes time because credit scores are based on your payment history.Reality: Your credit report gives lenders a snapshot of how responsibly you've managed debt over time. Consistently paying bills on time is the best way to build and maintain a strong score—but it won't happen overnight.Tip: Be cautious of anyone claiming they can “fix” your credit instantly. No legitimate company can erase negative (but accurate) information from your credit history overnight.Myth #2: Credit Counseling Destroys Your Credit ScoreMany people worry that seeking credit counseling will harm their credit score.Reality: Enrolling in a credit counseling program is a neutral mark on your credit report and does not directly affect your score. Closing accounts impacts your score, so working with an accredited nonprofit organization is essential to develop a plan that keeps your credit intact. That's why Christian Credit Counselors is the only organization we recommend for credit counseling and debt management. Tip: Avoid paying for expensive credit monitoring or identity protection services. You can monitor your credit for free through reputable sources.Myth #3: Canceling Credit Cards Boosts Your ScoreMany people believe that closing old or unused credit cards is a responsible move, but it can actually hurt their credit scores.Reality: Lenders want to see two or three active credit lines. Closing credit cards reduces your available credit, which can negatively impact your score by increasing your credit utilization ratio (the percentage of available credit you're using).Tip: Keep zero-balance accounts open unless they charge an annual fee. If you must close an account, do so gradually—perhaps one every six months—to minimize the temporary impact on your score.Myth #4: Too Many Inquiries Hurt Your ScoreWhile excessive hard inquiries (when lenders check your credit for a loan or credit card application) can lower your score, not all inquiries count against you.Reality: Credit bureaus recognize rate shopping—for example, when you're comparing mortgage or auto loan rates. If you make multiple inquiries within a 45-day window, they count as one single inquiry, not multiple.Tip: Always shop around for the best loan terms without worrying about multiple hits to your credit score.Myth #5: Checking Your Own Credit Report Hurts Your ScoreMany consumers avoid checking their credit reports because they fear it will negatively impact their scores.Reality: Checking your own credit is a "soft inquiry" and does not affect your score. Only "hard inquiries" (such as applying for a loan or credit card) can impact your score.Tip: Review your credit report every 6–12 months to catch errors or fraud early. Get a free report from AnnualCreditReport.com, the only official site for free credit reports.Myth #6: Credit Scores Are Locked In for Six MonthsSome believe their credit score is only updated periodically, leading to confusion when making financial decisions.Reality: Your credit score is dynamic, meaning it updates as new information is reported—not every six months. Changes in balances, payments, and account activity can impact your score as soon as they are reported by creditors.Tip: If you're working on improving your score, be patient and consistent—your efforts will show over time.Myth #7: If I Pay My Bills on Time, I Don't Need to Check My Credit ReportIt seems logical that paying your bills on time means your credit report is in good shape. But that's not always the case.Reality: 80% of credit reports contain errors. Mistakes like incorrect account information or fraudulent activity can damage your score even if you've never missed a payment.Tip: Check your credit report at least once a year to identify errors and dispute inaccuracies before they hurt your financial standing.Myth #8: All Credit Reports Are the SameMany people assume that if they check one credit report, they've seen them all.Reality: There are three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—and they all calculate scores differently. Some lenders may pull from only one bureau, while others check all three.Tip: Review reports from all three bureaus to get a complete picture of your credit history and spot discrepancies.Myth #9: A Divorce Decree Automatically Removes You from Joint AccountsDivorce proceedings often divide assets and debts, but that does not automatically separate joint accounts.Reality: If you and your former spouse share a loan or credit account, both of you remain responsible for the debt—even if a court assigns the balance to one person.Tip: To protect yourself, close joint accounts or refinance loans to remove your ex-spouse's name. Simply relying on a court order won't protect your credit.Myth #10: Bad Marks Automatically Disappear After Seven YearsMany assume that negative information automatically falls off their report after seven years, but it's more complicated than that.Reality: Some items, like Chapter 7 bankruptcies, remain on your report for 10 years, while Chapter 13 bankruptcies stay for seven years. Paid-off accounts in good standing can remain for 10 years, which benefits your credit history.Tip: If you have negative marks on your report, focus on building positive credit habits to minimize their impact over time.Myth #11: I Can Pay Someone to “Fix” My CreditCredit repair companies often promise quick fixes, but many of their claims are misleading.Reality: No company can legally remove accurate negative information from your credit report. If a debt is legitimately yours, it will stay on your report until its expiration date.Tip: You can dispute errors yourself for free. Christian Credit Counselors provides free resources and sample dispute letters to help you correct inaccuracies. The Truth About Credit ReportsUnderstanding your credit report and score is essential for financial success. By debunking these myths, you can take control of your credit and make informed financial decisions.Check your credit report regularly for errorsKeep credit card accounts open to maintain a strong scoreShop around for loans without worrying about multiple inquiriesWork with trusted advisors, not credit repair scamsIf you're struggling with credit card debt, Christian Credit Counselors can help. In this episode, I speak with Manuel Maendel from the HEART Search and Recovery nonprofit organization. Manny shares with us both his personal story and the story of HEART. This episode differs from other Spearfactor episodes because it is less focused on spearfishing and more focused on finding lost items and people underwater. We discuss the equipment that he uses from divers to robots, and the techniques to search in the most difficult underwater environments. The reason why I decided to share this episode was because I thought that the knowledge shared about sonar and other equipment could potentially help others in the future if they ever found themselves looking for a piece of equipment or even a dive buddy. Always be a learner. Always be a beginner. Go back to Basics. Blessed are the Poor in Spirit. Be like the Publican, not the Pharisee. All these ideas are variations on the theme of remaining humble and bravely acknowledging what you don't know and where you fall short. If you can do this, you can always learn, always grow, and always work towards repairing damage you may have caused. Today's reflection is drawn from the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, commemorated in the Orthodox Christian Church just three weeks prior to the beginning of Great Lent. This ancient parable is not just a cornerstone of the spiritual life, but has a wealth of insight for the sober life as well. The Heart of Chaos – Interview with Don and Hutch About the Episode: Calming the Chaos welcomes Don MacKee and Ian Hutchinson (“Don and Hutch”), who are best mates who live in Australia. They share their story of how they were both thrown into a “do or die” situation a couple of years ago, which caused them both some chaos. While they were on a bike ride, Hutch went into sudden cardiac arrest, and died for 18 minutes. Fortunately, Don and some bystanders were able to perform CPR and mouth to mouth resuscitation for 10 minutes until the medics came, and Hutch was one of the 9% of people who survive cardiac arrest in Australia. Don and Hutch are now the founders of “CPRfriendly.org” which aims to save lives by helping anyone get CPR friendly in just minutes, in a light and fun way. On this podcast, Don and Hutch share their story of chaos, and some of their “lessons learnt after being dead.” Join us for a fun interview on a very serious topic of chaos! 1.  THE KITCHEN GARDEN SUCCESS WITH CORIANDER Scientific name: Coriandrum sativum I mentioned before that certain herbs that look alike and again I find myself talking about another herb that confuses people.   Australians refer to the seeds and leaf as coriander but in the northern hemisphere, the leaf is sometimes known as 'cilantro.' Coriander is one of those herbs that people either love it or hate it. Do you love it?   Coriander leaves Coriander is easy enough to grow but being in the carrot family,(Apiaceae) its green leafy tops can look not only like other herbs, but other vegetables! My guest, Toni Salter in the podcast, calls it the 'primadonna' of herbs.  There are many things it doesn't like and without a second glance, coriander will bolt to seed giving you not much leaf at all. What causes it to bolt to seed? Soil is too dry Too little water at the right time. Poor or impoverished soil. Poor drainage in your herb garden. Temperatures too warm for it's liking. Temperatures too cold for it's liking Transplanting-the worst sin. Problems with germination? Try soaking the seeds for a few hours in a shallow saucer of water. TIP: Always sow the seeds directly into the position where it will grow. Sow it into a container if you like, but keep it there. Coriander loves rich fertile soil, much like your vegetables. Coriander seedlings When to Sow in Australia For sub-tropical and arid zones, you have August to September; Temperate districts, sow the seeds from September until the end of November, In cool temperate zones, October to November, Sow your seeds about 1 cm deep, cover them and keep them moist. Whether or not you sow them in rows, scatter them amongst your other veggies, or use them to grow as a shade plant for your lettuce, it really doesn't matter. Companion planting: plant coriander near your spinach to confuse the grasshoppers. Let one or two plants go to seed. The flowers attract beneficial insects after which the coriander seeds can be harvested to use in cooking, once the seeds turn brown and crispy. Coriander seeds drying on plant A must if you like Asian cooking and even though coriander looks like parsley, as soon as you smell it, you know what you've got.   Heaps of Coriander seeds are used in curries, tagines and many other Asian dishes. In fact the whole herb, including the roots can be ground up to make a Thai Green Curry paste. Unlocking Your Nonprofit Potential

In today’s episode I’m answering your questions about Snapchat, birthday fundraisers on Facebook…and more! If YOU have a question you’d like me to answer, send me an email– just click on contact, or you can always send me a message on Facebook or Instagram. Here’s the first question… Question: I know people have different opinions about this, but how many hashtags do you recommend an organization typically use on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linked In for our posts?  Answer: Well, you’re right - there are differences in opinion on the topic of hashtags! It varies depending on which platform you’re using. On Instagram, there is a 30-hashtag limit on a post. You’ll have to experiment to find out what works for you. Try using 10 hashtags, 20, or 30 hashtags and then look at the insights for that post to see what your numbers tell you. Every audience is different. Personally, I’ve seen using 30 hashtags gets me more engagement and more views on my Instagram posts.  TIP: Always use relevant hashtags to the topic to make it easier for your audience to find posts.  On Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn: you might use the “less is more” approach. Use 1 or 2 hashtags for those platforms.  Make them relevant to your post: For a post about Veterans Day, your hashtag could be #VeteransDay or if you’re posting about a festival, your hashtag could be a twist on the name of the festival like #SpringfieldFallFest. Using a hashtag specific to your organization or your brand? Be consistent and use the same hashtag repeatedly. That makes your hashtags effective.   Question: I have been asked to use certain sponsors’ hashtags in addition to all our own when posting. To be clear, the sponsor hashtags aren’t relevant to all posts, but I have been asked to use them. We have five of our own hashtags we currently reference on all posts without even including sponsors (which can add six to ten more. I feel all the hashtags are overkill and may bog the post down. I know you can use up to 30, some folks suggest just six at most, but Facebook says sometimes six is too much and it should not be more than two. What say you? Answer: Use as few of the sponsor hashtags as you can and put them at the very bottom of your post. For Instagram, leave your multitude of hashtags as a comment below your post – it’ll keep things looking clean. With your hashtags in the Instagram comment section when it posts to Facebook simultaneously all those hashtags don’t show.  If you want to see how well your hashtags are working for your posts, check out Episode 12: How Many People Have REALLY Seen Your Post?    Question: Lauren, how can we get more people to have birthday fundraisers on Facebook for our nonprofit? Answer: Birthday fundraisers on Facebook are a nice idea. Make sure you message the people setting up the fundraiser and get their address so you can send them a handwritten thank you note. Be grateful. There are two reasons you don’t want to depend on Birthday Fundraisers.  They don’t build a relationship with donors. Relationship is the most important thing for fundraising. In a birthday fundraiser on your behalf, you only form a real relationship with the host of the birthday fundraiser, but not with the people who donate to the fundraiser. The key to WHY people donate and continue to donate is that they know, like and trust you. Relationships build the “know, like and trust factor.” No customer service: Facebook doesn’t have a customer service hotline where you can just call and resolve an issue. Facebook has glitches. There are lots of stories out there about people not being able to receive their money from fundraisers. You wouldn’t want your donors to give thinking their money is being put to good use, but it winds up in Facebook limbo instead, would you? Here’s what you can do instead of a Facebook fundraiser - focus time planning and preparing for your next real-life, non-Facebook fundraiser. Stay in touch with your donors via your email newsletter. Nurturing that relationship with your donors over time will pay off in the end – better and more sustainably than any Facebook birthday fundraiser. Related: Episode 28: Raise More Money in 2020 With These Tips   Question: Lauren, I’ve seen pictures of you and your mom together on Instagram, both of your skin is amazing – what’s the secret?? Don’t say good genes.  Answer: Hahaha! Oh geez…I can’t speak for my mom, but for me… I just drink an utterly ridiculous amount of water. I live at high altitude where there are practically negative humidity levels year-round, and I’m pretty sure if I wasn’t constantly hydrating, I might shrivel up and blow away like a dried leaf.  I also take a daily multivitamin – just a women’s formula – and I try to get enough sleep and eat healthy.  I did just start using an oil and a moisturizer by a company called Pai – it’s made for super sensitive skin, which I have – and I really like it so far.  But really, I think water and sleep are probably the two most important factors. Since my skin is so sensitive - I can’t use a lot of products because almost everything causes a bad reaction, so I take care of my skin from “the inside out” and take a lifestyle-based approach. From my mom: Thanks to whoever made that comment!  Yes! Drinking lots of water is important.  But another thing is that I’ve always washed my face at night. When I was young, I used a soap like Dove and as we had more money, I used higher priced face cleansers-drug store and more upscale products. I think the important thing is having a clean face when you go to bed because it’s a great way to have a long time of rest for your face.  I live in the Deep South, so there’s lots of humidity and that always helps.  When I was a kid, we went water skiing every weekend with no sunscreen – yikes – but here I am with the skin I have, so I do have to say genes has some to do with it.  The main thing is to take basic care of your face – keep it clean, moisturized, drink lots of water.   Question: Hi Lauren – I manage Facebook and Instagram accounts for our nonprofit. Do I need to be on more social media platforms than that? People always say Snapchat is where the young people are and that’s who we’re trying to reach, but I have no idea how to use it and honestly, I don’t have time to do more than what I’m already doing with Facebook and Instagram. What do you think? Do I need to be on Snapchat or something else besides Facebook and Instagram? Answer: We’ve all heard people say “all the young people are on Snapchat” – and they might be, but most of them are also on Instagram and yes, even Facebook.  Your nonprofit should have an active presence on Facebook and Instagram, and if you have time for other platforms, that’s a bonus. It’s hard managing a multitude of social media platforms, and if you want to do it well, you want to make sure you’re not spreading yourself too thin. Do what you can focus on and do that well. Remember, showing up for your audience consistently and meaningfully – being extra clear about what you have for them and want them to do is what matters most.  TIP: Find out where your people spend time on social media and put your mind at rest. This will help you figure out where your social media priorities should be… On a little slip of paper, copy and paste the following question as many times as you can and cut it into strips. Repeat as often as necessary.  When the people you serve come through your door, give them a little survey. Here’s the question: “Which social media do you use the most?”  Then, collect survey responses for 6-8 weeks and tally the answers. You’ll get a great picture of what social media they’re using and where you need to be focusing your efforts.  Notice that the question isn’t “Do you use Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat?” Make sure to leave the survey an open-ended question so they can answer what comes to their mind first. This is the question: “Which social media do you use the most?”  You can do this at events or when you speak – you get the idea. Do this and I promise, it will help you find out where your people spend the most time on social media. If you have any questions – I’m right here for you! Ask away! What are essential oils & how do I use them? (Essential Oils 101 #1)

OilyApp+

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2020 33:37

In this episode of the OilyApp podcast we start our Essential Oils 101 teaching… We begin by outlining, first of all, what essential oils are… Essential oils are the life source of the plant = volatile substance derived from plants, containing the natural smell, characteristics and chemical compounds of the plant. Essential oils are concentrated, and they’re usually extracted through steam distillation, cold-pressing and resin tapping. Essential oils are potent, volatile, & versatile. They have therapeutic qualities which can encourage, equip, and empower your health! After defining essential oils, we mention and define a few helpful terms— things you need to know as you begin this journey. #1- Singles come from one plant. #2- Blends come from multiple plants. Some oils work incredibly well together. So, Young Living “blends” them before you receive them. It removes the guess work, while making it super simple to use them. #3- Vitality oils are certified and approved by the FDA for human consumption. Vitality Oils, a trademarked name by Young Living, have white labels w/ the same color trim as their non-Vitality counterparts. #4- Oil infused products- Oils can be used to cook, to clean… for your pets… in soaps+ shampoos… in just about every room in your home. Oil-infused products come in all shapes + sizes- for every facet of your healthy lifestyle. Finally, we discuss three ways you can use the oils… #1- Touch- The first of three ways you can use essential oils is super simple: rub them on your skin and let them do their thing. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. And, it’s full of holes, tiny pores which let sweat and toxins out and simultaneously allow other things in. (Tip- Dilution for kids and pets- see the charts on www.OilyApp.com/Kids  and www.OilyApp.com/Pets .) #2- Smell- The second way you can use essential oils is to breathe them. Your skin is your largest organ, but your sense of smell is the strongest sense. It’s tied to the limbic system, where memories and feelings are stored. #3- Taste- The third way you can use essential oils is to ingest them. Now, two (brief, subtle, not intended to freak you out) words of caution before we discuss this third way to use the oils. I’ll defy James Bond’s wisdom to “never say never” on the first. And, I’ll give you a definitive on the second. Tip- Never use a second-rate oil that you snagged from a bookstore, a big box retailer, or any place that specializes in anything except essential oils. Tip- Always use Vitality oils when you ingest. These oils are easy to spot as they’re always dressed in white and trimmed with the same color as their “regular” oil counterparts. General safety concerns- think simple: red light, yellow light, green light. This episode breaks down the process of how to move your show (podcast) from one podcast hosting company to another without losing any subscribers. Topics covered in this episode: What is a podcast host? What is a podcast directory? What is an RSS Feed? What is a 301 Redirect? How do you move your show without losing subscribers? What is a podcast host? When you start podcast, one of the major decisions you will make is where to host your show. There are many podcast hosts available but some of the more popular ones include: Simplecast. Where I work full-time on the product support and content team. Others hosting companies include: Libsyn Blubrry Podbean BuzzSprout Spreaker Soundcloud Anchor What do podcast hosting platforms do? Overview of Podcast Hosts: 1. Audio File Storage & Delivery 2. Generate your RSS Feed 3. Publishing & Syndication to directories. Audio File Storage & Delivery To store your audio files and serve them to listener devices when someone clicks play or download from a podcast app or an embed player or anywhere your podcast episodes can be accessed. Generate your RSS Feed which is the link between your show and subscribers and to all of the podcast apps and directories. Every podcast has one unique RSS Feed and that usually only changes when you change podcast hosts. Note: Your RSS Feed is not always generated at the location where you store your audio files. When moving a show, you will do so wherever your RSS Feed is located and not necessarily where your audio files are stored. My original set up was using the Powerpress plugin by Blubrry on my Wordpress website and I hosted my audio files for download only on the podcast host, Libsyn. If your RSS Feed was generated by Powerpress, then that is the location where you would redirect your feed. Ask if you are not certain. Publishing and Syndication To Directories. Podcast hosts make it possible for you to create and publish new episodes much like creating a blog post on a website. When you publish new episodes or make edits to already published episodes, your podcast hosting platform connects your RSS feed to the podcast directories such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Pandora so your show will always be updated automatically. This process of publishing and then updating everywhere automagically is possible because of the RSS Feed and this process is called syndication. Additional roles of podcast hosts: Analytics, websites, sharing tools, embed players, and some even have world-class support! What is a Podcast Directory? A podcast directory is simply a library or catalog of podcasts where one can browse, listen, and subscribe to new shows. Major Podcast Directories: Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts Google Play Pandora iHeart Radio TuneIn Stitcher When you start a new show, you submit your RSS feed to as many of these directories as possible to get your show listed. You only have to submit your show one time and when you publish new episodes they all get updated as we learned earlier because of your RSS Feed and the power of syndication. Tip: Create an Apple Note or Text document and copy the URL for each directory listing for your own show. What is an RSS Feed?: RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. (Wikipedia) When you set up a new podcast you will get a unique RSS Feeds for your show. This is usually done by the podcast host. If you set up your show on your Wordpress website and use the Powerpress plugin or maybe you are podcasting through a Squarespace website, your RSS Feed will be generated and managed at your website. Wherever you publish new episodes and manage the details about your show such as titles, descriptions, show art etc, is typically where your RSS feed is located. An RSS Feed looks like any other hyperlink or URL, but it is actually a text document filled with code. If you click on it, it will not take you to your podcast, but will only show you a bunch of code. The code is full of all the information about your podcast along with special metadata tags that can be read by podcast apps such as Apple Podcasts or Overcast. The RSS Feed is what you submit to the podcast directories, but it is not the link you share to post on websites or social media channels. Once you submit your show to the directories, it generally works behind the scenes. Podcast directories mirror everything that is in the RSS Feed. When you make a change at your podcast host or wherever your RSS Feed originated, your RSS Feed updates as soon as you press Save or publish. When your RSS Feed changes, the podcast directories will see the changes the next time they refresh and the changes get updated wherever your podcast has been submitted. Every podcast has one RSS Feed and it will not typically change unless you move your show to another hosting company. Tip: Copy your RSS Feed URL to an Apple Note or text document so you always have it handy if you discover a new directory to submit to or for reference when you are ready to move your show to a new hosting platform. What is a 301 Redirect? A redirect is a way to send both users and devices to a different URL from the one they originally requested. A 301 Redirect is one of the most common types of redirects and a 301 is permanent. When you create a 301 Redirect for your podcast RSS feed when a listener device or app looks for your old RSS Feed, they get forwarded or redirected to your new RSS Feed and because it is permanent, they will never look for the old RSS feed again (in theory). The 301 Redirect is how you can move your show without losing subscribers. The 301 Redirect should also update many of the apps and directories, but you should check each directory and manually update the directories if they are still referencing your old RSS Feed. Warning: The 301 Redirect is also how you will lose all of your hard-earned subscribers if you do not take your time and do it right. Ask if you need help or not sure how to do it. Creating a 301 Redirect is easy, but if you do not do it correctly, it is possible you could lose all of your subscribers and they would have no idea. How To Move Your Show (Step-by-Step) Tip: Always subscribe to your own show in Apple Podcasts and other mobile apps as you want to know exactly what your subscribers are experiencing and new episodes and changes to your show always happen much faster for subscribers, so it is the best way to monitor your show Tip: Export your analytics data and copy any information you want for your records from your old podcast host. You will not be able to import your old analytics data to your new hosting company. Every podcast host is a little different, but here is a typical scenario. I will use Simplecast as a guide since I know the process best for importing a new show: Import RSS Feed to Podcast Host: Setup a trial account on your new hosting platform. Paste your original RSS Feed to import your show. (This will only make a copy of your show and will not affect your podcast in the directories and it is not linked to your original host). Enter Billing Information (credit card) Select the subscription plan you want to be on at the end of the trial period. New RSS Feed. Once your show has been imported and billing setup, you will have access to a new RSS Feed. 301 Redirect. When you have tested your new podcast host and are ready to ‘officially migrate’ your show from your old host to your new host, it is time to set up the 301 Redirect. This is the final step as once you do the 301 Redirect, you will no longer be publishing on your old host and will start publishing new episodes on your new host. All clear? Where do you do the 301 Redirect? The 301 Redirect will always take place at the source of your original or old RSS Feed. You will paste in your new RSS Feed in the 301 Redirect field of your old host. The 301 Redirect will permanently forward your old RSS Feed to your new RSS Feed and this process takes effect immediately. Keep your old account open for up to 4 weeks just to be sure the Redirect has had enough time, but you will notice the redirect happening right away. Your old RSS Feed is no longer active once you create the 301 Redirect. How you know if the 301 Redirect is working? Open a web browser. Paste your old RSS Feed into the address bar. If the redirect is working properly, your new RSS Feed should open in the browser. 5.Update The Directories Apple Podcasts and the other major directories and apps should update automatically once they look for your old RSS Feed, but to expedite the process and to make sure all of the directories are looking at your new feed, it is a good idea to manually update as many directories as possible. Some directories may require you to fill out an RSS Update form, but many directories such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Stitcher have portals where you can update your RSS Feed manually. Apple Podcasts is your priority as so many little directories pull the RSS Feed from Apple Podcasts. One thing you can do if you are hesitant or not sure if you want to manually enter your new RSS Feed is to log into Apple Podcasts Connect and click ’Refresh Feed’ and it should change to your new feed in about 20–30 minutes. Log back in to Apple Podcasts Connect and make sure you see your new RSS Feed in the URL field. If you do not, paste in your new RSS Feed and save. 6 . Update Web Players (some cases) If you have a website with embed players from your old host, you will need to replace the embed codes with your new host embed player codes. 7 .Publish New Episodes! Once you set the 301 Redirect and have updated the directories, it’s time to start publishing new episodes on your new host. You have officially moved your show and did not lose any subscribers. For the first few episodes, just keep an eye on all of the directories and make sure new episodes are showing up. Tip: Always subscribe to your own show in your mobile podcast apps. Directories can take a few hours to update when you publish new episodes or make changes, but subscribers will often get the updates in near real-time. Force quit your Apple Podcasts app and re-open if you are not seeing updates after some time and starting to get impatient.

How do you identify a scam, before ASIC or the regulators do it for you?

Welcome to Finance and Fury, The say What Wednesday edition where we answer your questions, and sometimes questions from people from the gym – such as today Is this a scam – moneysmart have a page on this – which is good resource – give a quick summary of this – but trouble is that while you can read it and research the sort of things to look out for - so can the scammers. Scammers adapt to get around the warnings or rebrand to avoid public scrutiny. Imagine if you got a call from a Nigerian Price who just needs you CC number to buy a taxi ride home, but he will give you $100k in return. Works? Not today – we are all aware of this trick – but back in the 80s to 90s it was slightly more plausible – no smartphones to order uber, or mobile phones to call the people he needs, so you would be talking to him on your landline – assuming that he is at a payphone calling random numbers as he doesn’t know right number to call and just spent his last 50c on this call – hence why this did actually work at one point of time – thankfully in a vast majority of cases people were wary – but today don’t as many people would give CC details to someone who looks like Eddie Murphy in coming to America if they came up to you on the street.   Today’s ep will be focused on how to avoid a scam through not just a list of things to tick off – but logic and reasoning – The methods of scammers are always going to adapt as we do – but the method to working out if it is a scam doesn’t change Process of knowing it is a scam before it lands on the ASIC or money smart list as a scam, and the tips list   Normal list from MoneySmart – Investment scams and tips to recognise   First warning bell - get a phone call, email or letter from a stranger asking if you would like to invest in a company Scammers often make the company look 'real' - there may be a website and documents that look official but are completely fake. Their tips on questions to ask to find out if it is real: What is your name and what company do you represent? Who owns your company? Does your company have an Australian Financial Services licence? What is your address? If they avoid these – probably a scam – hang up, ignore all calls and walk away – but who and what questions – very easily answered – What is a good place to start, asking who is better, but why and how are more important when it comes to fully reasoning out a scam, or anything The reward seems too good to be true - 'get rich quick' schemes might look good but in reality, only the scammer makes money You need to sign up right away - pressure you by saying you have to decide on the spot - Never agree to this. Tip - Always ask for documents and read them thoroughly before you make a decision. All good information and tips – what does a scammer do to avoid looking like a scammer? Probably still call – but they can use a legitimate companies details, or well-rehearsed story/pitch Long term profitable investment – so not massive instant returns, but higher than the overall market to be enticing – have a reasonable pitch No pressure to invest – just an introduction call – send you an email with an information pack with historical data, reports, and the companies website – has ABN, list of testimonials, investment information, past performance – slow burn strategy – At the start of the year – got a pretty irate call to the office from one or two people – some scammers were calling random numbers and saying they were from another company that has a similar name to mine, and that we were offering loan refinancing services and wanted to ask for details – people asked for company info and due to the difficulty in understanding what the person on the phone said – they googled the wrong thing and called our office – so got a few calls through wrong google searches, cant imagine how many the actual company got – Be aware of any random person calling from a legitimate company and asking for information, especially if you have never dealt with that company   One Case – from friend at gym - Call from random company that appeared to have everything, website, performance history, being in the UK as well promise of trading algorithm that has performed at 12% per month on average – historical data proves it – this sort of return does seem too good to be true – but how do you know for sure - Hard when emotions take over - put in $2k now and get $34k in 2 years – Very tempting – FOMO versus TGTPT – fear of missing out can be bigger Number one rule in looking at a scam – Don’t ask the salesman any questions, but ask yourself ones to reason this out Previous example - This compounding return doesn’t really happen consistently when it comes to shares – How do we know this is true though? Might happen somewhere? Are there any trillionaires? Richest person from investments – warren buffet – at 12%pm ROR, $20k today would be $14.5trn in 15 years – then the next year would be $56trn – compounding is amazing – Question to ask – what are the chances that a person who called me out of the blue can offer me an investment strategy that can make me the richest person to ever live within 15 years? You have your answer   Reasoning Rules to look for a scam – Reason through at every stage – focus on why and how   Research – don’t go to their website only – probably going to have little useful information on it – just misdirection Only time their website useful is for information about who put together their trading template, or manages/operates this behind the scenes and what they say they invest in - non of which scream scam or not – but important to question Investments themselves – Promised returns – Track record of investment managers - Very easy for a company to hide history or just create new entities – Go through ASICs business lookup to see when the company was established, and who owns that company – individual or corporate, or trustee If there is no ABN – best to avoid – if they have no AFSL – avoid – But if they are there with no complaints – dig through history – went through the one for previous scam – started in Feb 2019, few months ago Questions to ask – why would a company change names/restructure every few years? Why can’t I find the AFSL number on asics look up? Locations and contact details – previous example of the share returns – have all the contact details – phone hotline, office addresses, mailing, etc. – Did some digging and their offices are in based in a month-to-month serviced office facility, that is just very discrete in its online marketing as agents take care of finding the clients – Look at records of address in sales or leases/rental – if you can see the location is long term lease contract that is more than a month old it makes it more legitimate – when the listing for the past few years have all been for individual office spaces with reception services – suspicious Question – Why would a company that has been around for 2 years and is managing money successfully for clients have at best an office cubicle, and at worst letterbox office with virtual receptionists? Fake reviews - The only reviews I could find were in forums - few of the same sort of copy paste scenarios – someone asks a question, saying they were contacted and think it is a scam – then one or two other people jump in saying that their brothers cousin or friend of a friend swears by it – And another is doing it and first week has gone well, etc. All one person, from separate accounts – clever narrative – media do it – control the question and control the answers – lays out all fears that the average people would have, and people come in as social proof that it is legit – Question – when are each of the posts made? Do they follow the same script/outline structures? If you have ever read a real comment section, hopefully you will be able to tell the difference   If it looks legitimate – who has Custody of the investments/funds – who has ownership of funds and which bank account is it linked to – Give me $50k to invest for you, versus receiving advice on how to invest or facilitated on your behalf – Buy managed fund – you own the shares managers buy – why regulated and monitored – avoid managers investing in new yachts and your investment going to $0 – But you are the owner of the investment still If you are asked to ever transfer money to their account to invest in something that could be set up inside of an account that you own and they can transact on as third party There will be legitimate cases when this might need to happen – however, if a financial adviser wants you to transfer the cash for an investment to them for them to then invest for you – warning bell Question to ask – why isn’t the investment being set up in my name and therefore, I can make the contribution into the investment instead of a bank account of someone else? Guarantees on money back – for upfront costs of losses - The wording for the full refund of the purchase price allows them to pretty easily get out of the repayment. All of these are impossible to prove incorrect, as based around the back testing of their software it works, and that the information on share prices can be verified by looking it up on the ASX. Going forward though, there is no guarantee of returns based around original deposits and targets being met. Also, even if the information is incorrect, they can always just claim that the brochures had printing errors and not pay the refund.   I hope this helps - please let me know if you have related questions - Unfortunately, it can be hard to sort out scams from legitimate investment strategies – but using some reasoning and asking yourself the questions to tease out the answers based on what is real – what you can see and understand having no AFSL and promising guaranteed returns is normally the biggest give away that it is a scam But easy to fake – so ask yourself the questions with why or how, instead of what   Hope you enjoyed it If you want to get in contact, you can do so here.

Whatever your budget or level, you can make podcasting work for you -Understand Your IncomeTherefore step number 1 is to make a clear goal of exactly what you want to do with your new podcast. By defining the purpose of your show and its format (how and where you are producing it etc) will help you create the foundations of the budget you need to create.TIP: Always remember to take into consideration whether this is your profession or a hobby – how much you initially input will differ if you see this having cash rewards or not!Determine your fixed costsNext on your to-do list is to identify all of your fixed costs necessary for running your show.Based on your planning around how you’re going to produce your show, you’ll need to do some research what options there are for your show’s needs and requirements. The things you need to take into consideration are items like your host platform, microphone.-One of the main fixed costs (your host platform) can be kept to a minimum, by choosing free or low-cost podcast hosting platforms such as: Free getting started plan options.TIP: Make sure you haven’t missed anything by taking a look through past bank statements and tick off everything in there. Identify your variable (and one-off expenses)Variable costs are those which are necessary for your business to continue functioning but change from month to month. And, if this is the beginning of your podcasting journey you’ll also need to include your one-off costs – money to cover your basic equipment: microphone and headset and also some $ to create some awesome cover art (we’ve written a guide to creating great cover art, here).Wondering how to identify your variable costs? Look at what you’ve spent on office supplies, marketing / promotional costs or replacing old equipment over the last 6 months and calculate an average outgoing cost. About to start your podcast? Try and predict what you might spend (we’ve written a blog on launching a podcast you might want to take a look at) and use this to structure your budget for the first few months, once you’re up and running you can cross-check to see if your prediction is in line with the reality!TIP: Variable and one-off costs are usually the fun ones so they’re the most important ones to keep in check in your budget!-Make a rainy day fundWe would also highly recommend incorporating to your budget a fixed amount that you put away each month as part of a contingency fund. Putting away a little bit of money on a regular basis will mean you never go into crisis when something unexpected comes up!TIP: An easy way to break down your money is the 50/30/20 method. The music licence owners will not like downloads and this content will be streaming only.Given my understanding of how music podcasts will work - it is not really a threat to podcasting as we know it today as we are talking about new music shows on the music streaming platforms that are not really podcasts. Key is the “Download”? Women in Podcasting - the gender gap in podcasting is closing - Why do you think this is happening --- Listening and Hosting/creating - 3% growth a year, seems slow, but steady https://www.edisonresearch.com/women-podcast-listeners-closing-the-listening-gender-gap/Spreaker/Voxnest Links:https://Voxnest.comhttp://blog.spreaker.comhttp://SpreakerLiveShow.comhttps://Spreaker.comEmail: rob at voxnest.comSend Questions and Comments to:Twitter: http://twitter.com/spreaker using #SpreakerLiveTwitter: http://twitter.com/VoxNestTwitter: http://twitter.com/robgreenleeTwitter: http://twitter.com/alexeum Tech Support: support at spreaker.com

This week I interview John Carroll who now lives in Australia, but you can certainly hear a strong Manchester accent!   John spent some time walking the French Way as a group with 7 friends from sunny Oz, but then ventured off on his own to experience a different Camino along the Ingles Route in October 2018.   QUOTE: Is from the song. “You will never walk alone”.   Highlights:   Tip - a good tip to get over jet lag is to know that if you are travelling 10 time zones, then it will take approx 10 days to get over jet lag. How did you hear of the Camino? Not only was John inspired by the film The Way, but he had also read a book called In Search of The Way, by a priest who he had met in England. John walked from Sarria to Santiago (the last part of the French Way with his friends from Oz). What was the main differences between the French Route to the Ingles Route? The Inges Route is very quiet and John was worried that he would be walking it all on his own, but that soon changed! Lots of people from Oz, but not too many from the UK tend to walk the English route. What was the weight of your pack? - about 22lbs / 10kg John talks about walking poles and how valuable they were to his journey.  There are many steep ups and downs on both Camino trips. Tip: Always add rubber paws to your walking poles. Did you bring anything that you didn’t use? Yes, I took 6 pairs of socks that I never used! Did you get any blisters?  No, but I did hurt some of my toes.  He walked into low concrete bollards which hurt his feet. Did you take a luxury item?  Yes, a 2nd credit card. John would recommend taking a sleeping bags if you are travelling in October onwards. Did you have a reason for walking the Camino?  Yes, for the adventure and to take some time for reflection. Was the Camino everything you thought it would be - yes, and more. Be inspired by the people around you.  Not just on the Camino but in everyday life as well.

If you don't understand the title of today's memo, just ask a 12 year-old boy. (If you didn't grow up in the South, your 12 year-olds may be more familiar with “He who smelt it, dealt it.”) With a title like “The Smeller's the Feller,” does it surprise you that today's memo is about a tried-and-true management tool? A couple of days ago, my partner Tim Miles made a brilliant suggestion about how we might begin the 3-day Business Growth class we're having in March. (Sorry, completely full.) I first heard about Tim's idea when I got a funding inquiry from the Wizard of Ads group director. Tim had suggested something really awesome. Expensive, but awesome. I sent Tim an email. “Fantastic idea, Tim! You're in charge.” TIP: Always assign responsibility for follow-through to the person who had the idea. Give the fun of chasing the rabbit to the dog who sniffed it out of hiding. (In essence, the smeller's the feller.) AHERE'S WHY: 1. No other person will have quite the same vision in their mind or enthusiasm in their heart. 2. No one has more to gain – or lose – than the person who had the idea. BONUS BENEFIT: Word will spread, and it will slow people down from coming up with so many things “YOU” ought to do. When we were constructing the buildings at Wizard Academy and a group of people would arrive on campus, at least one of them would pull me aside and say with excitement, “Here's what you ought to do…”PROBLEM: I was already as busy as a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest, as stressed out as a long-tailed cat in a roomful of rocking chairs and as uptight as a frog on a freeway with his hopper stuck. So one day I impulsively shook the hand of the person who had made the suggestion and said, “Great idea! You're in charge!” They asked how much money they could spend and I said, “As much as you can raise.” Amazingly, they raised the money, refined the idea and brought it to full execution. When I saw how well their idea turned out, I said to myself, “Make a note: do that more often.” When my partner Tim got my email, he replied tongue-in-cheek, “Man, as long as I've been around, I really should have seen that coming.” I say “tongue-in-cheek” because Tim has made numerous suggestions over the years, and he's always been willing to take full responsibility for implementation. “Great idea! You're in charge!”  is one of the guiding principles of the Wizard of Ads partners. It has also become a tradition at Wizard Academy. I suggest that you test this technique within your own company. It's the perfect way to determine if you're surrounded by the right kind of people. Roy H. Williams

Orchestrating Success

We all do things that we wish we had not done. Those are usually called “Learning Experiences,” unless the event creates a catastrophic backlash or questions the leader’s integrity. We can use whatever words we want to use, however, in some circumstances those words might create negative results that diminish the credibility of the leader. Choice of words is power, and choice of words is integrity, especially for the entrepreneur and thought leader who must establish a position of influence to support a niche. Here is my list of behaviors that bring down leaders in any type of organization: Ignoring Signs of Problems: There are many reasons that leaders don’t respond to issues that arise in day-to-day activities. First, the leader is unsure of what to do when surprised by unexpected actions or results. The top reason I observe for leaders at any level not responding to unacceptable behaviors or actions is a fear of not being liked. The script that leaders play to themselves is that they must be liked for people to want to follow them. That’s not true. It’s important for people to respect the leader and trust in the leader’s abilities in order to be an active participant. A musical analogy for this dynamic is this: the conductor stops the rehearsal and points out that the trumpets are too loud and that the flutes are not in tune. The conductor presents these as facts and not as a personal criticism. The conductor then defines the prescription to the problem as follows: trumpets, take the dynamics down one level and flutes, you are slightly flat. The players are not offended and the rest of the orchestra is not horrified. It’s just the reverse. If the conductor did not address the problems and provide the solution, then they would be considered a poor leader. Leaders in business could benefit from this model. Define the problem. Address it as soon as possible. Be factual and specific in the analysis of the problem as well as the solution. It’s possible because the orchestra has established a culture of high-performance standards that everyone understands and supports. Tip: Deal with the problem as soon as it is noticed or the problem only gets worse, costs money, wastes time, and damages relationships. Cutting off Team Members with Ideas: It’s only the insecure leader who doesn’t want to gain the perspective of others on the team. If the leader can’t respect the opinion of team members, then it might time to get a new team. Tip: Don’t attempt to be right all the time; instead, work to make others always right. This way time and energy are available to focus on the top leadership priorities that only the top leader can do. Taking Back a Delegated Project: Nothing is more damaging to team spirit and personal initiative than the leader who takes back a project or assignment to do themselves. There are two messages implied in this action: 1) the person to whom it has been assigned is not capable of successfully completing the project; or 2) that there is no chance of anyone other than the leader being successful. This is a no-win action. There is a full set of leadership competencies tied to delegation. Most leaders do not even know that these competencies exist and certainly don’t know that they are needed. Tip: Learn about the reciprocity of leadership over-functioning and team under-functioning. Teams under-function mostly because the leader does it all. What’s the point of even trying? Valuing Results and Not Individuals: Effective leadership depends on effective relationships. Value results. Emphasize results. Focus on results. And constantly work on relationships. Tip: Learn to develop healthy boundaries so relationships don’t depend on people “liking” the leader, but understanding roles and responsibilities along with the leader’s vision for the organization. People must understand the “why” before they care about the “what.” Be good at defining the “why.” Denying the Problems that You Created: My assessment of many problems in any group emotional system, especially in business, is that the leader unknowingly sets up problems and, because of their lack of awareness of their role in the problem, conflict, confusion, etc., they deny any part in the situation. That’s simply a gap in knowledge and awareness for the leader. First of all, in any situation involving conflict, confusion, and team dysfunction, everyone plays a role. It’s usually the leader who has the primary role in the situation. In order to avoid making things worse, look in the mirror before blaming others for the problem. Having a personal leadership coach who is aware of the subtle interactions in group emotional systems has been a real value to me in my work. I coach entrepreneurs and corporate executives, and my ability to provide value to others is greatly enhanced by having a coach myself. As Covey says in his7 Habits of Highly Effective People, “Sharpen the Saw.” Tip: Always work on relationships and always work on yourself - for both skills and systems. In summary, we as leaders cannot point fingers for failure anywhere other than at ourselves. Certainly, we have others who challenge us and economic trends that cause us to rethink strategies, but our response either elevates us as leaders or makes those situations worse. Continuing to work on personal capacity building, and knowledge about organizational functioning as group emotional process, will guide us in managing self and in making better decisions. This is especially true for start-up businesses and early-stage entrepreneurs who have the opportunity to build and lead an efficient collaborative culture and to embed the excellence of performance into that culture, to inspire and equip leaders on teams to surpass expectations.

In this 5 Minute Sales Tip, Paul G. Walmsley shares with you his technique for closing more sales. All throughout his sales presentation Paul is asking questions that lead the prospect closer towards the sale. Old School sales training refers to this as "ABC, Always Be Closing." That sounds like high pressure. The way Paul ask for the order is by using questions such as, "How would you be satisfying this order today?" Or, "Let's just make sure I have your delivery address correct..." These examples may sound cheesy and salesy, but they work! Paul argues in this episode that you are talking to someone in order to have them whip out their credit card and buy from you. So, listen in as Paul outlines the simple techniques he uses each and every day to close sales...
