Max McCoy is a video producer, podcaster, and student of what it means to find and pursue your most authentic direction. After ending his college basketball career early, he went deep into the world of personal development and spirituality, looking for a path that strayed from what he considered to be “the norm” for most former athletes. Through the resurrection of his creativity, and a cultivation of faith in following his inner guidance, he became a sought after creative partner for some of the biggest names in personal development. He is now most passionate about helping others find and pursue their own sense of authentic direction. Justin Wren is a heavy-weight mixed martial arts fighter, humanitarian, and all around incredible person. Over a decade ago, the world got to know Justin through his successful career in the UFC – from starring in the Spike reality show “The Ultimate Fighter,” to becoming a dominating force in the heavyweight division, to his MMA record of 15-2. Today, the world knows Justin for the size of his heart and the amazing work he is doing in the world. Following a six-year struggle with addiction and depression in his early career, Justin stepped away from MMA to seek out purpose and passion for his life. What he found was a forgotten tribe of Mbuti Pygmies deep in the jungles of the Congo, beaten down by economic enslavement, disease, and hopelessness. Through his Fight For The Forgotten initiative, 1,500 members of this formerly enslaved people group are now free and flourishing on 3,000 acres of their own land with access to clean water and their own farms. Today Fight For The Forgotten is working with a community of Batwa Pygmies in Uganda, supporting them with clean water, latrines, housing and agricultural tools and seed for farming, with the dream of them one day, in the not-too-far future, becoming self-sufficient, going from extinction to thriving. Justin is an incredible story-teller, and has become a close friend of mine. His voice and his stories are exactly the kind that I want to be raising up on this podcast, and I am so excited to share this one with all of you. From Ivy League to the jungle of Costa Rica: Melissa Stangl shares the epic tale of how she came to co-found Soltara Healing Center--an Ayahuasca retreat center. After spending years working in scientific labs and corporate offices, Melissa realized the healing and transformative potential of working responsibly with psychedelics and plant medicine. In 2015, she consciously chose to leave corporate America and moved to live and work in the Amazon jungle. A few years later she and co-founder Daniel Cleland would found Soltara Healing Center. I had the pleasure of living down at Soltara for 3 months and recording 13 episodes; this is the final episode of the Ayahuasca Soltara Series. Thank You Plant Medicine is a global grassroots movement to raise awareness about plant medicines, entheogens and psychedelics. On February 20th the invited the world to ‘come out’ with their plant medicine stories using the #thankyouplantmedicine on social media. I met up with Jonathan on my last day in Costa Rica, synchronicities aligned for us to do this quick interview in my hotel right before I headed to the airport. Have you heard the musical intro for this podcast? It’s a song called Concept 1 by Kodomo. Kodomo (Chris Child) an Emmy award-winning composer and electronic artist who lives and works in Portland, Maine. He has written scores for many TV shows including the soap opera All My Children for which he won an Emmy in 2014. As Kodomo, he is best known for his work on the Harmonix video games Amplitude, and Frequency which were the precursors to Rockband and Guitar Hero. "Kodomo" is the Japanese word for "child"—a nod to his surname and the fact that he grew up in Japan. Kodomo's first full-length album Still Life is a highly conceptual piece in which the music was all inspired by a set of photographs taken during Kodomo's travels. The tracks are all titled using the photographic images rather than words. For example, Concept 13 started with a photograph that reflects the Fibonacci proportions that are repeatedly found in nature. These proportions were used to govern the musical composition in the melodic theme, the sonic texture, and even the pace of development of the piece. Host Hallie Rose sits down with Kodomo in his home studio in Portland, Maine to talk about the inspiration and process behind creating his sonic alchemy. Topics Explored: > Chris’s story growing up in the magic of Tokyo, Japan; how he became enamored with music > Chris’s musical journey - Berklee College of Music - Boston, making music for video games (precursors to Guitar Hero and Rock Band), building his apartment studio, scoring TV shows & working with a record label in NYC, > Chris’s first album ‘Still Life’ and the photos that inspired it > Vulnerability of sharing music with the world > Themes of geometry, light, physics, and nature in Kodomo’s music > Binaural patterns in music.
