En: A golden light kissed the cobblestones of Piazza Navona, one of the most fascinating and symbolic squares in Rome. Marco and Giuseppe, two inseparable friends, began their venture. They wanted to impress the beautiful Sophia, the girl of their dreams, with a performance right in the middle of the famous square. En: Marco, with his lively smile, had a confident air. He was dressed in a blue blazer and a fedora hat, looking just like an opera singer. Giuseppe, on the other hand, was tall, with bright green eyes. He was dressed in black, with a red bowtie, resembling a true opera maestro. It: Iniziavo a cantare. En: They began to sing. Their voices rose, danced, and resounded throughout the square. Sophia, with her big brown eyes, watched in awe. The opera was turning into a spell that would conquer her heart. En: Suddenly, the sky above them darkened. A huge flock of pigeons, attracted by the singing, swooped down on the heads of the two singers. This made Sophia laugh until she nearly cried! First one pigeon, then two... and then a whole flock landed on Marco and Giuseppe's heads! En: Covered in pigeons, the two friends looked at each other in surprise. Sophia couldn't contain her laughter. Marco and Giuseppe tried to free themselves from the pigeons, but the more they struggled, the more the birds flapped their wings. Finally, the two managed to free themselves from that feathery chaos, their faces red with embarrassment. It: Tuttavia, Sophia li applaudì con gioia. "È stata la cosa più divertente che abbia mai visto!" esclamò, "Siete stati fantastici!" Con quelle parole, l'imbarazzo di Marco e Giuseppe svanì come la luce del sole che ora colorava la piazza di rosa. Si guardarono e risero: avevano fallito nel loro intento, ma avevano fatto ridere Sophia.En: However, Sophia applauded them with joy. "That was the funniest thing I've ever seen!" she exclaimed, "You were fantastic!" With those words, Marco and Giuseppe's embarrassment faded away like the fading sunlight that now colored the square in pink. They looked at each other and laughed: they had failed in their attempt, but they had made Sophia laugh. En: In the end, that day, Piazza Navona resonated not only with the opera voices of Marco and Giuseppe but also with laughter and adventure. Although they had been interrupted in such a hilarious way, they understood that the greatest impression could come from the most unexpected situation. Was it a failure? Perhaps. But it was also a moment of unexpected joy. And, as the saying goes, laughter is the best way to win a heart. From then on, every time Sophia mentioned pigeons, she couldn't help but laugh, remembering that day. It was commissioned by an iconic couple: Charles and Marie-Laure de Noailles. The villa quickly became the go-to meeting place for the French avant-garde. So what exactly is the couple's legacy? We take a closer look in this edition of Fashion.

Christen Horne refers to herself as a nerd, geek and gamer. She's a big fan of reading and loves Star Wars.As an accomplished singer, she received her Masters in Opera Performance. In addition to the entire family being singers and musicians, archery became a big part of their lives as well. When Karla, Christen's mother, was in high school she became the California State Champion Archer and the family still enjoys the sport today. Having a mom that worked wasn't that unusual for Christen. Her mom had been a paralegal for years after completing her associates degree. As the three children were growing up, Karla was leading worship at the local church. They spent a lot of time at the church. But my guest says she enjoyed it because they were always singing.Ms. Horne fondly remembers her mom embracing whatever fun activities the kids would be involved in, including going to water parks and going down the water slides together, playing board games and spending quality time involved with the family. Years ago, Christen was actively involved in her community theatre programs. She fondly retells the story of the production of "Fiddler On The Roof," when her mom and aunt were "volun-told' that they had to play village fathers. There were no other boys/male actors to play the part. They still laugh about it today.Christen considered her mother as being firm yet compassionate when it came to disciplining the three kids. Homework definitely took the priority especially over video games. Homework wasn't done, no one got to play. Christen says "mom was always really good about helping us find the balance in things. Making sure we had time to play and making sure we got our homework done." It wasn't until Christen started to realize that she often hid her emotions, that she started to recall other instances from her childhood that were clearly unhappy. She had suffered from depression at a young age that was left undiagnosed. She felt that her mother was embarrassed when Christen showed her true emotions. Horne shared with me that "through my mental health journey, I've gotten more comfortable being more myself around my mom." Often feeling "this is my fault," Christen often blamed herself and felt that if her mother rejected her, it would be devastating. It's scary to be a young child and not understand complicated emotional situation.Working with coaches on a regular basis has helped Christen tremendously. "You pick one hurt, then move on to another," reflects Horne. Through working with her coaches she says her relationship with her mom is so much better and she's very grateful for all the support.Christen is now working on her fantasy book which features her main character 'Alkara' who's named after mother and who also is an archer. Career Q&A with Kristin Chenoweth. Moderated by Richard Ridge, Broadway World. Emmy and Tony Award winning actress and singer, Kristin Chenoweth, takes the lead in a career that spans film, television, voiceover and stage, effortlessly. She received an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on the ABC series Pushing Daisies (Pushing Daisies was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award and Emmy Award for “Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.”) More recently, Chenoweth lit up the stage of McKinley High as a former student who returned to town with more than the baggage from her flight, on Fox's hit comedy, Glee. Though Kristin has often come into our livingrooms on hit shows such as The West Wing (where she starred as Annabeth Schott) and as a guest judge on both American Idol and Project Runway, she may be most remembered by Broadway lovers everywhere for her origination of the role of Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, which earned her a Tony Award Nomination, and her Tony-winning performance in You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, for which she stole the show and many hearts in the process. Chenoweth will next be seen on-screen in the Universal film The Boy Next Door, alongside Jennifer Lopez, and in the animated Lucas film fairy tale musical Strange Magic, both set to be released on January 23. She will also be seen in the film A Bet's A Bet (International title: The Opposite Sex), releasing in January. She's completed production on the indie teen drama entitled Hard Sell and the Disney Channel's live-action original movie Descendants, in which she will play the classic Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent. Chenoweth will return to Broadway, playing the glamorous film star, Lily Garland, in the Roundabout Theatre Company's 20-week limited engagement of On the Twentieth Century in March. In addition to her starring roles on stage and screen, in 2009, Kristin also wrote an upliftingly candid, comedic chronicle of her life so far, in, A Little Bit Wicked, which was released by Simon & Schuster, and debuted at # 12 on the New York Times Hardcover Non-Fiction Best Seller List. Kristin is also a passionate supporter of charities which dedicate their time and efforts to helping those in need, such as: the Kristin Chenoweth Art & Education Fund, The Red Cross, Broadway Cares EFA, The Point Foundation, ASTEP, breast cancer awareness, adoption advocacy and organizations supporting animal welfare. Chenoweth earned a Bachelor's degree in Musical Theater and a Master's degree in Opera Performance from Oklahoma City University. She was also presented with Honorary Doctorate degrees from both the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and her alma mater, Oklahoma City University. Kristin is an inductee into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, as well as the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Seasons Greetings My Lovely Drumsters, I hope you had an amazing holiday season and that 2022 brings you all the love, dreams, and fun goodies life has to offer. Do you love Christmas songs? They immediately seem to make the season of the holidays festive and I don't think Christmas would be the same without them. They seem to be a genre of music that can make you cry, laugh, or just have fun with the family and friends for some sing-alongs. I started a collection of Christmas albums after my parents passed because it was one of the traditions we had in our house growing up. They always made me feel like they were there when I'd listen to them. You're probably asking me, “Why are we talking about Christmas tunes?” Well for starters it's because today's guest is the lovely Juliette Valle who has created her first album, a wonderful Christmas album titled https://open.spotify.com/artist/6fTP6h3OvsBEOnSET9GNTb (“Joyfully”). Not only is it one of the most beautiful sounding Christmas albums, but there's also a great cause that will be helped as it sells. She is donating 100% of the profits to the National Kidney Foundation (a cause near and dear to her heart). And, this means to the world to me as both my mom and brother were Dialysis patients. Juliette is here today to discuss her current title holder of The Miss Florida Pageant (a title not to be taken lightly). Her new album, and how she's making an impact with it, and how she balances it all. Juliette is not only a young beautiful woman on the outside, but, she seems to have a heart of gold. She's a tremendously talented opera singer (and she's only a junior in college). She's been a classically trained vocalist since she was 8 years old. She holds two state MPA Vocalchampionships for the category of Opera Performance in a Foreign Language. In 2015 she was admitted to https://fgo.org/index.shtml?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzeTn2r239QIVHhbUAR0hWgT4EAAYASAAEgJfXfD_BwE (Florida) https://fgo.org/index.shtml?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzeTn2r239QIVHhbUAR0hWgT4EAAYASAAEgJfXfD_BwE (Grand Opera's) teen program and became a prodigy for its https://youngarts.org/?_vsrefdom=adwords&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIia-a1b639QIVGSiGCh1JmwDsEAAYASAAEgIBmfD_BwE (Young) https://youngarts.org/?_vsrefdom=adwords&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIia-a1b639QIVGSiGCh1JmwDsEAAYASAAEgIBmfD_BwE (Artists Learning Academy (YALA)). She then ventured further afield to do her Classical Theatre Intensive Post-Graduate studies at the London Academy of Music and Drama, UK. Some of her favourite credits are: Jerry Springer: The Opera, Sweeney Todd with Imelda Staunton, Evita for the Donmar Warehouse and Assassins at the Menier Chocolate Factory. After releasing an album of her own music, Aoife was commissioned to write her own original musical “Hallowed Ground” based on the Elusian Mysteries, which has already enjoyed two professional workshop productions and is currently seeking further funding for a future fill fledged production. Multimedia artist, modern-day Renaissance woman, and vocal powerhouse Sangeeta Kaur (Teresa Mai) is a singular talent. Sublime vocalist, charismatic performer, devotional spiritual practitioner, Sangeeta’s body of work is both cinematic in scope and accessible to the casual listener. In a world where we are all searching for inspiration, Sangeeta consistently delivers. Sangeeta pursued the formal study of music since she found refuge and even miracles through music at a young age. Teachers recognized her natural talent and gifted voice and encouraged and supported her through training and scholarships. Through their direction and her persistence and practice, Sangeeta earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Opera Performance from the Bob Cole Music Conservatory at California State University, Long Beach; and a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from Boston Conservatory. While traveling the world as an operatic vocalist, Sangeeta was introduced to the power of spiritual mantra as well as the discipline of yogic practices. Through song, she started to develop a spiritual practice that continues to transform her life and influence her musical expression. As she says, “My life’s goal is to share music from a high vibrational place.” The high vibrational place shines through in every mantra Sangeeta chants, every aria she sings, and in every original composition she shares. Her body of work spans a wide range of genres and traditions showcasing her talents in composing and performing music ranging from soaring operatic arias to musical theater, New Age compositions, sacred mantra chants in multiple languages, and uplifting and accessible English singer-songwriter arrangements. So far she has released four award-winning albums: Niguma, Ascension, Mirrors, and Compassion. With a team of collaborators, Sangeeta produced, staged, and premiered the ambitious and acclaimed mantra opera Niguma, in Los Angeles. Her growing list of additional collaborations include work with noteworthy pop producer Narada Michael Waldon, Grammy Winner Peter Kater, Grammy winning singer Hila Plitmann, the Hungarian Studio Orchestra, Hungarian Studio Choir, Gerhard Joost, Nicholas Neidhardt, and more. Sangeeta brings new meaning to world music with her innovations, creativity, and in production and performance. Some of the many awards she has received include induction into the Indie Music Hall of Fame by the Indie Music Channel, Best New Female Artist of the Year and Best Classical Artist from the Indie Music Channel, multiple Peace Song Awards, and multiple Radio Song Awards, among others. Sangeeta is committed to being an independent artist who is serving in the creation of entertainment that inspires and progresses beyond genre to truly harmonize with the heart. Through awards and acclaim, Sangeeta is regularly recognized for the purity, clarity, and resonance in her voice. Sangeeta performs on stage regularly and is currently in the recording studio creating new work that merges classical and contemporary music with mantra and a range of lyrical traditions and approaches. The mainstream embrace of Sangeeta’s spiritual approach to music that is soulful and healing reinforces the meaning of this musical journey. Illuminance: Following last year’s multi-award-winning breakthrough, Compassion, classical crossover/New Age star Sangeeta Kaur returns with her most inspiring and diverse album yet, Illuminance. Produced by two-time Grammy Award-winning composer and pianist, Peter Kater, Illuminance is a journey through the universe within each and every one of us. Ever wonder what young music professionals go through on their way to making it big? On this episode of Talk Bravely, I chat with Alyssa Click, a young professional singing actress and music teacher living in Boston. Alyssa recently completed a Post-Graduate Fellowship in Arts Administration at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (2019), holds a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee (2018) and a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Northern Arizona University (2016). To say she’s an impressive performer is an understatement. But on this episode, she joined Talk Bravely host Dr. Kerry Moll to talk about the business side of the music industry, how working musicians are paid, what being represented by a manager means, and how she creates steady streams of income through her talent and a few (NINE!) side hustles. What we’re talking about: The money side of the music industry - and how it’s expensive to be a professional musician. “As a musician, you ARE your business” and have to treat your financial life as a such. “Knowing when to shut my laptop and take my screens away is critical for mental health.” Alyssa shares how she juggles nine ‘side jobs’ while pursuing her dream AND the benefit of a good therapist to keep her mental health in a good place. “Do your research… always look to find out what the typical pay looks like.” It’s not always easy to find out what range a contract for performance should be, but the information IS out there. How she’s transitioning to online music work and videos during social isolation in the COVID-19 hotspot of Boston. Watch the video of this episode. What does it mean to be live? Can a hologram be considered performance? Is going to the theatre a private or communal act? And should performing artists embrace and incorporate technological change—or should they resist, and build an oasis from social media and screen time? What on earth is going on with live performance in the digital age? Listen to the first-ever recording of the podcast with a live audience! The panel, moderated by Ben, features Colleen Renihan, Craig Walker and Michael Wheeler of the Dan School of Drama and Music. About the Panel Colleen Renihan Colleen Renihan was delighted to join the Dan School of Drama and Music faculty as a Queen's National Scholar in 2016. She earned a B. Mus. in Vocal Performance from the University of Manitoba, an Artist Diploma in Opera Performance from the Vancouver Academy of Music, and an MA and PhD in Musicology at the University of Toronto in 2011 with generous funding support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Her dissertation Sounding the Past was a finalist for the Society for American Music’s Housewright Dissertation Award. Dr. Renihan’s research considers aspects of opera and operatic culture from a postmodern perspective. Inherently interdisciplinary in nature, it explores cultural politics, popular culture, performance theory, temporality, memory theory, opera’s interactions with media (specifically film), and opera’s potential for intervention in current debates in the philosophy of history. Her work has been published in a variety of edited collections and journals, including, most recently, twentieth century music, The Journal of the Society for American Music, and Music, Sound, and the Moving Image. Forthcoming publications include an invited chapter on Benjamin Britten’s coronation opera Gloriana to an edited collection for Boydell & Brewer, and a chapter on affective listening in Harry Somers’s Louis Riel for Wilfrid Laurier Press. Two current book projects explore the historiographical dimensions of American postwar opera, and innovation in Canadian opera and music theatre 1970-2010. Dr. Renihan has presented her research at academic conferences in Canada, the United States, and Europe, including chapter and national meetings of the American Musicological Society, and in 2010, she participated in the Society for Music Theory’s graduate student workshop on ‘Music and Narrative’ with Michael Klein. She was a founding member of Operatics (a working group for the interdisciplinary study of opera) at the University of Toronto, a founding member of IPMC (Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Music in Canada), and has been involved with several research and writing projects at the Canadian Music Centre. My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is an guy who has a title that I have never used before on any show But it is one that I wish that I had come up with, as he has been called the Gay White Oprah which is a fantastic name. But how has he come to receive such an accolade you maybe asking? Well my listeners it can be put down to one thing, or maybe two things. The ability to be himself, and the ability to know how to connect with others. You see all business success is based on these two characteristics, and it seems that our guest has them in abundance. As he says “I am the type of guy that can meet you and within two minutes have you spilling your heart out” So it's with little surprise, that after receiving his Masters in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University in 2009, he has been taking this ability to open the hearts of whoever he talks to by helping people everywhere with his weekly advice podcast “The Dear Mattie Show” where he discusses relationships, sex, fear, friends, job, and even makeup in an inspiring and entertaining format. But if you are thinking that this is just another normal type of life-coach guest that you see all over the shop, then think again. He is also a singer; received a undergrad in Opera Performance from the University of North Texas, has been active in the project Get Empathy, a campaign to build a national movement to stop bullying in schools. Communication Director for Brave Trails, supporting Gay, Lesbian and Trans-Gender folk to become thought leaders in their fields, and a stand-up comic and producer. So with all these different experiences and knowledge, is there a chance that he could get lost with himself and dilute whatever he considers his god given super power? And when he get someone to start talking does he every think…”Ok, Ok, I think this was a bad idea? Today, in English, of course. I'm Alessandro Brandão from Brazil. I'm Adir Ferreira from Brazil and I'm Rachel Smith from New York City. Alessandro: Today we're going to talk a little bit about "How to speak English like a native English speaker". So, stay tuned. Let me tell you a little bit about our today's guest. Rachel lives in New York City. She was born and raised in Florida, went to college in Indiana where she studied Applied Math, Computer Science, Music and graduate school for Opera Performance in Boston. She loves being connected to people throughout the world through Rachel's English. Hi Rachel, it's a pleasure. Rachel: Hi! Alessandro: Thank you for joining us today. Rachel: Sure... Thanks for having me on. Alessandro: Great! By the way, how's Lucy? Rachel: Lucy is doing well. Yep, she's holding up well, I just rode her around Manhattan this morning, so I'm happy to have her. 02:00 Alessandro: Great! Just to let you know, Lucy is Rachel's new bike, because her old bike had been stolen and she decided to ask readers for suggestions for a new name. Of course, I was rooting for "magrela". Here in Brazil "magrela" is a common name for a bike. Did you know that? Rachel: Uh-huh… ... Well, I figured it out pretty quickly because many many people were suggesting that as a name. Alessandro: We used to say also "Camelo" or just Bike in English. Rachel: Hm-hum , yeah. Alessandro: Rachel, let me introduce you my friend and partner, Adir Ferreira. Adir: Hello, Rachel! It's a pleasure and an honor to have you with us today. Rachel: It's nice to meet you. Adir: Ohh fantastic, nice to meet you too. And as most of our listeners and readers know, I'm a huge aficionado of pronunciation studies and it is always a pleasure to feature your videos on my personal blog and on Transparent Language English blog for Portuguese speakers too, it's always always good to have you there. Rachel: Well, thank you for doing that, thank you for helping to spread the word about my work. Adir: It’s my pleasure. 03:07 Alessandro: I don't know if you remember, but Adir already sent a video response to you. It was a video about the question "What did you do today?" Do you remember? Rachel: I do actually, I just watched it again today to refresh myself and it was a great video, really appreciated it. Adir: Thank you! Rachel: You're welcome! Alessandro: Adir is the king of the pronunciation here in Brazil. Adir: So you say. So you say. Alessandro: That's why I'm so nervous today. Adir: Ahhh, Don't worry. Alessandro: So, Rachel you've been working on Rachel's English for over 4 years now. How did it all start? 03:42 Rachel: Actually I just had my five-year anniversary last… last month, so I guess I need update that information. It started in 2008, when I was living in Germany and I was studying at a language institute there to learn German and so I was hanging out with a lot of people from all over the world who were there to learn German and one person in particular that was in several of my classes ... was from Turkey and was interested in American English and, you know, Hollywood is such a great exporter of the way we speak and he found it very interesting and wanted to know h...
