Weird History: The Unexpected and Untold Chronicles of History
The revelation that reality TV is often fabricated shouldn't shock anyone. Despite Bear Grylls' reputation as an outdoor expert—having survived a major fall during his time in the British Special Forces, climbed Mt. Everest before turning 25, and navigated the North Atlantic in an inflatable raft—there's skepticism about his true survival prowess. Evidence suggests that Grylls may not be as formidable a survivalist as portrayed. Some of his wilderness advice has even been questioned by other experts. So, what's the reality? 186 - Embrace Adventure And Live Fully In this episode, we dive into the profound lessons from Bear Grylls' “How to Be a Scout,” exploring how the principles of wilderness survival apply to our daily lives. Grylls introduces the STOP acronym—Stop, Take a moment, Observe, Plan—as a method to tackle life's challenges head-on without succumbing to panic. We discuss how the priorities of Protection, Rescue, Water, and Food (P-R-W-L) in survival situations can be metaphorically applied to any crisis, emphasizing the importance of assessing and addressing our fundamental needs. Grylls' advice on dreaming big, starting small, and the crucial ‘shakeout run' before major endeavors resonates across various aspects of life, highlighting the value of preparation and learning from minor setbacks.Stepping out of the comfort zone into the fear zone is a pivotal theme, encouraging listeners to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Grylls champions the use of positive language and being true to oneself, emphasizing the impact of positivity on personal development and the importance of a growth mindset.Join us as we unpack these life lessons, drawing inspiration from Grylls' adventures to navigate our journeys with courage, resourcefulness, and a spirit of adventure. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/186-embrace-adventure-and-live-fully/ https://www.beargrylls.com/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/SmallStepsPod Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com
185 - Unveiling Life's Blueprint Through Scouting In the tapestry of life, few threads are woven as intricately and with as much care as the lessons learned through scouting. It's an odyssey that transcends the mere act of tying knots or pitching tents under the starlit sky. Instead, it lays down a blueprint for building character, fostering resilience, and nurturing a profound connection with the natural world. Bear Grylls, a name synonymous with adventure and survival, attributes his scouting experiences as foundational to his journey. This article explores the essence of scouting and how it shapes individuals into exemplary human beings, drawing insights from Grylls' narrative and personal anecdotes from those touched by this timeless institution. Scouting, at its core, is about preparation. "Be prepared," the scout motto, is more than a catchphrase; it's a philosophy that equips individuals with the skills to face life's unpredictabilities with confidence and grace. Grylls' adventures, both on and off the screen, echo this principle. From navigating treacherous landscapes to surviving extreme conditions, the ethos of scouting sunshine - or the ability to find light in the darkest of times - has been his guiding star. But scouting's curriculum extends beyond survival. It's a holistic education in leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. Scouts are taught to lead by example, to set clear objectives, and to work collaboratively towards common goals. These lessons in leadership and teamwork are invaluable, translating seamlessly into personal and professional spheres. Grylls himself is a testament to this, seamlessly stepping into roles that demand these very skills, whether it's leading expeditions or guiding celebrities through wild terrains on his shows. Perhaps the most profound lesson scouting imparts is the cultivation of values. Kindness, bravery, gratitude, determination - these are not just words to a scout; they are virtues to live by. Grylls emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself and extending a hand of friendship and support to those around us. This ethos fosters a community of individuals who are not only prepared for life's adventures but are also compassionate and empathetic, making the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time. Moreover, scouting instills a deep respect for nature. The principle of leaving no trace teaches scouts to tread lightly on the earth, preserving its beauty for generations to come. This environmental stewardship, coupled with a hands-on education about the flora, fauna, and celestial bodies, nurtures a lifelong bond with the natural world. Grylls' respect and understanding of nature's laws are reflective of these early lessons, guiding his survival strategies and environmental advocacy. In conclusion, scouting is more than an extracurricular activity; it's a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Bear Grylls' narrative is a vivid illustration of how scouting's lessons in preparation, leadership, values, and environmental consciousness can sculpt individuals into well-rounded, resilient, and compassionate beings. It's a call to action for all of us to embrace these principles, to be prepared not just for the wilderness but for the unpredictable journey of life itself. Whether it's facing challenges with optimism, leading with kindness, or safeguarding our planet, the blueprint for a fulfilling life can often be found in the simple yet profound lessons of scouting. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/185-unveiling-lifes-blueprint-through-scouting/ https://www.beargrylls.com/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/SmallStepsPod Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

He has also led expeditions through Alaska including North America's highest peak, Mount McKinley.Pen Hadow (July 7) – Explorer and Adventurer Pen Hadow was catapulted to international fame when he became the first and only person to complete one of the last great polar challenges – solo, without re-supply, from Canada to the North Pole. It took him three attempts over 15 years to achieve this single feat at the ‘bleeding edge of exploration'. Pen has a strong connection with Alaska in his adventures, including attempting to sail to the North Pole from Nome, Alaska.Ann Daniels (July 17) – Ann Daniels is one of Britain's leading Polar explorers. In 2002 Ann became a world record holder when she reached the North Pole despite unbelievable arctic conditions and became the first woman in history to ski to the North and South Poles as part of an all women team. This journey has never been repeated. In 2009, Ann took part in the first Catlin Arctic Survey over a period of 100 days, 1000km crossing of the ice cap in temperatures as low as -58ºF. The survey set off from Alaska, walking, skiing and on occasion swimming stretches of open water to reach the North Geographic Pole. Ann is described by The Daily Telegraph as one of the top 20 Great British Adventurers of all time.Felicity Aston (July 27) – Felicity Aston MBE is a Polar Scientist turned Explorer. In 2012 she became the first woman to ski alone across the Antarctic, a 1744km/1084m journey that took her 59 days and entered her in the Guinness Book of World Records. She has also created and led record-making ski expeditions to both the North and South Geographic Poles with international teams of pioneering women; skied frozen rivers and lakes in Siberia; driven 2,236 miles to the Pole of Cold (the coldest inhabited place on Earth); flown across the U.S. in an airship; and run the Marathon Des Sables footrace in the Sahara. An award-winning author of three books, professional speaker, and occasional TV presenter, in 2016 Felicity retraced the route of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush and spent time mining for gold in Alaska and the Yukon to co-present a series for the BBC.Mensun Bound (August 7) – Known as the “Indiana Jones of the Deep,” Mensun Bound has conducted wreck surveys and excavations all over the world in a career that spans 40 years. During that time, he excavated one of the oldest known shipwrecks (600 BC). In 2019 Bound stunned the world with his discovery of Admiral von Spee's flagship, Scharnhorst, which had been lost in battle during WWI. That same year Bound was Director of Exploration for the first search to find Shackleton's ship Endurance. In 2022 the search resumed and on March 5 the Endurance was found and, as predicted by Bound, it was upright, largely intact, proud of the seabed in an excellent state of preservation.Holland America Line Partners with The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation in Celebration of 150th AnniversaryHolland America Line will partner with The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, the 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the eponymous landmarks, to celebrate the cruise line's 150-year journey from immigrant carrier to consumer ocean liner fleet. The partnership, which kicks off October 26 as Holland America Line completes the recreation of the brand's first-ever sailing from Rotterdam to New York City, features on-board video content across Holland America's entire fleet produced by an Ellis Island researcher, as well as a curated exhibit launching in 2023 at Ellis Island detailing the brand's historical prominence in bringing 1 in 10 immigrants from Europe to the United States. The collaboration will launch with a joint talk between Stephen Lean, director of The American Family Immigration History Center at Ellis Island and Bill Miller, noted cruise historian, detailing the immigrant experience in the late 1800s; the presentation will be available on-demand across all ships within the fleet. Noting the cruise industry's – and particularly Holland America Line's – importance in the immigrant journey from Europe to US, the Foundation will curate an exhibit in its History Center available for visitors from February to April 2023.The cruise line, which was founded in the Netherlands in 1873 as the Netherlands-American Steamship Company, was primarily a carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, carrying nearly 2 million passengers to new lives in the New World. Holland America Line was the first to do away with “Steerage class” altogether, renaming it “Emigrants Class” where unlike the competition, guests were served three square meals. It is this level of care and attention to detail – a tradition and hallmark of the brand that has continued to this day – that was the impetus for its nickname at the time: “The Spotless Fleet.” Holland America Line provided everything from doctors and a pre-departure hotel complete with English lessons and classes on American civics to ensure passengers a safe journey to New York; and in fact, 99% of the immigrants carried on the fleet were cleared for entry through Ellis Island, a tremendous feat at the time.Holland America Line began the recreation of its first voyage with a sendoff October 15 from the Netherlands. The ship will sail past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island as it arrives in New York City around 7am October 26.Windstar Cruises Partners with Coral Gardeners in TahitiWindstar Cruises has partnered with the Coral Gardeners, a Mo'orea (French Polynesia)-based organization determined to revolutionize ocean conservation and create a global movement to save the coral reefs through reef restoration, awareness activities, and innovative solutions. The team works to grow, plant, and monitor thousands of heat-resilient corals with the goal of bringing life back to the ocean. The three-year partnership begins this month with Windstar's $35,000 donation to Coral Gardeners to adopt coral for all guests sailing with Windstar in French Polynesia for the remainder of 2022.2022 is Windstar's 35th anniversary of sailing in Tahiti/French Polynesia – the longest of any operator in the region. (It's also the only destination where the U.S.-based cruise line sails year-round, giving guests ample opportunity to plan a once-in-a-lifetime visit in any season.) With two ships sailing French Polynesia throughout October, Windstar has been celebrating its 35th season all month long with special events, integration with local dignitaries and artists, and a heightened infusion of local culture both on board and ashore.Guests on the remaining 2022 sailings will receive a small card in their guest room, alerting them to the adoption of coral in their name. In 2023 and 2024, each guest booked on a Windstar cruise in French Polynesia will be presented with the option to adopt a coral for a donation of $35 per person. Unique coral adoption cards for those participating will be placed in their guest room on board.Windstar is confident the majority of guests will choose to donate to help save the reef they are enjoying on their Tahiti cruise.A decade of FUN down under It's been just over two weeks after returning to Australian shores and yesterday Carnival Cruise Line celebrated an incredible 10 years of providing Australians with fun-filled holidays at great value.Kicking off celebrations at Tangalooma, Moreton Island, passengers aboard Carnival Splendor were treated to the party of a lifetime with beach games on the sand, Carnival cupcakes and a giant ‘10 Years in Aus' sandcastle before returning to the ship for her journey home to Sydney.First arriving down under in October 2012, over one million guests have since experienced the fun of a Carnival cruise. Day one of Millsy's Long Way to the Top tour began in Karratha, with the Jayco Outback Journey that Mills and wife Trish are travelling in arriving at Karratha Bowls Club for a live broadcast of his 12pm show. There was joy on site and enormous relief back in the 6PR studios after we hit the airwaves. Someone asked me did I bring the vibrating bed with me, no we haven't, mainly because I think it might rattle a bit in the caravan park, which could cause people to talk and we don't want that," Millsy said. But enough pillow talk. Former WA National Party leader Brendan Grylls moved to the Pilbara as part of his position as leader and has stayed in the region well after his political career ended. "If you love Coral Bay and you love Exmouth, you're gonna love the Pilbara," he said. "I love seeing my mates easily make friends with Aboriginal kids now, which I reckon growing up in the western suburbs might've been something they wouldn't have done."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hot...sweaty...no, we're not reviewing Little Birds again! It's just absolutely baking here in England, and Stevie can't believe Bethany and Katie don't have air conditioning. There's still plenty to talk about this week, despite the heat!Katie's favourite Bear Grylls is back with a new show on Amazon Prime which has the longest title known to humankind - World’s Toughest Race: Eco Challenge Fiji. It has conches, medallions, and Bear back-flipping from a helicopter, but it's not enough to impress the team. Heartwarming new comedy Ted Lasso is available now on Apple TV+, which follows a pretty clueless American football coach as he tries to teach "soccer" (actual football) in England. Hear what Jason Sudeikis had to say about his time in the UK and his thoughts on our comedies. Creatures from hell and white supremacists are both here to terrify characters in the new HBO and Sky Atlantic series Lovecraft Country. With a unique, fresh take on sci-fi and horror, the team are thoroughly impressed. Listen to their review...if you dare...And - The Fresh Prince Of Air as a drama? Well, it's happening! Hear the story of how and why in this week's episode. As usual, we love hearing from you - email backstage@sky.uk and we may get back to you! Now, where's that glass of ice water...
A bonus show featuring the amazingly gifted Adam Diggle. Adam nails Lycett, Attenborough, Grylls and Cage among others, and treats us to his pantheon of brilliant boxing impressions - Fury, Froch, Eubank, McCrory and Tyson among them. Plus some great insights into his vocal techniques.

Show Notes Nonsense Section Bear Grylls vs Bulgaria In the episode of Running Wild filmed in Bulgaria’s Rila mountains in 2017, Grylls and US Latin and ballroom dancer Derek Hough were shown killing, gutting and cooking the frog before swimming across a lake. “It is evident from the film material that during the shooting there were breaches to the regulations and rules of conduct in protected areas: entering and swimming in the water basin of the Karakashevo lake, lighting a fire, and catching and killing an animal,” the environment ministry said in a statement. The series’ production company faces a possible fine of between €500 and €5,000 while Grylls and Hough could receive fines of between €250 and €2,500. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2019/feb/21/bear-grylls-bulgaria-fine-killing-boiling-frog No one who has a Pension could be an evil man Nearly 75 years after the second world war, Germany is still paying monthly pensions to collaborators of the wartime Nazi regime in several European countries including Belgium and Britain, according to Belgian MPs and media reports. Belgian Parl. wants them to stop and release a list of all who've been receiving the pensions. Germany won't release a list of any sort (Germany be like that) The present German ambassador to Belgium, Martin Kotthaus, told a Flemish-language news site last year that an investigation was under way to establish what exact role the remaining recipients of the pensions had played during the war. German privacy laws would not permit a case-by-case study of the pension recipients, while the German social security system was not subject to eventual criminal law proceedings, Göllnitz said (German Historian with University of Mainz). https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/21/germany-still-paying-pensions-to-wartime-nazi-collaborators What are Yugoslavia “A really remarkable transformation from a Soviet vassal state to a modern European democracy, a member of the EU, a member of Nato, a country with a flourishing economy, growing its tourism year in, year out, and this is really an example of Europe at its best.” Jeremy Hunt fumbles diplomatic speech but lives to condemn German Saudi arms sales ban. What a hero. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/23/soviet-vassal-state-jeremy-hunt-makes-gaffe-in-slovenia Brexit could be delayed until 2021, EU sources reveal Brexit could be delayed until 2021 under plans being explored by the EU’s most senior officials, at a time of growing exasperation over Theresa May’s handling of the talks, the Guardian can reveal. A lengthy extension of the negotiating period is said by EU sources to be favoured by Donald Tusk, the European council president, should the Commons continue to reject May’s deal. Replacing the 21-month transition period with extra time as a member state would allow the UK and the EU to develop their plans for the future relationship with the aim of making the contentious Irish backstop redundant. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/feb/24/brexit-could-be-delayed-until-2021-eu-sources-reveal Topic 1 Rousseau has unenlightened tech support The title is a good joke in the same way Rousseau is a reliable method of direct democracy. Yes this is Rousseau, the "operating system of the 5 Star Movement" (is anyone else really tired of people saying they're a movement and not a party prior to becoming a party?). A recent story in Politico Europe (https://www.politico.eu/article/italy-5stars-digital-democracy-struggle) points to the most recent in a long string of issues with the system where several members complained they couldn't vote on whether the 5* senators should vote to remove Salvini's immunity from prosecution. As an aside immunity from prosecution has always seemed like a rocky idea for elected officials anyway... Rousseau? Having a way for party members to directly influence the party decisions does seem like a reasonable idea and their website doesn't indicate this is a complete piece of shit (https://rousseau.movimento5stelle.it/index.php). It also seems like a relatively transparent way of doing candidate selection. Seems simple enough - you register, provide documents saying who you are and have to be a member for 6 months before you can vote. However, talk to anyone who knows a little about internet security and they will tell you this is an awful idea if you're going to use it for decision making (This Tom Scott youtube video from a few years back explains the main reason well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w30x6oaDmI) It's currently being run by Davide Casaleggio completely, son of Gianroberto Casaleggio co-founder of the 5. This has happened before In 2017 before the last Italian elections (where the 5 did very well) there were reports of the system being compromised (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-italy-politics-5star/hacking-attacks-a-pre-election-setback-for-italys-5-star-movement-idUSKBN1CA1TM) “Rousseau’s content systems are outdated and its level of security is totally inadequate,” said David Puente, a computer expert and web developer who worked for Casaleggio Associati for four-and-a-half years until 2011. Puente, quoted in the article, said they would need to roll back current functions to make them secure Why Verify, We Trust Them Right? There's an entertaining NYT piece (who also have no reason to exaggerate) (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/28/world/europe/italy-election-davide-casaleggio-five-star.html) where they call Davide Casaleggio a "Wizard of Oz-like figure". Their transparency page is just a list of people (https://rousseau.movimento5stelle.it/trasparenza.php) and doesn't really answer any questions about how they're convincing people of the validity of any voting or party list selection. The "Rousseau association" seems to exist to make it seem like an independently run operation - not just one guy with political goals. There's a series of screenshots from this twitter user https://twitter.com/r0gue0 with screenshots showing them logged in as different users on Beppe's blog (which is run by the same people). They've also previously posted donor lists which they would only be able to get by accessing the database (https://weirditaly.com/2018/09/06/rousseau-platform-data-breach/). The Italian data protection service resulted in €32,000 in fines to the 5* for giving the data to 3rd parties. Topic 2 #AntiSemitism ##Why this came up this week? Well Orban's Fidesz government was doing another one of their wacky government poster campaigns that features George Soros quite a bit BUT THIS TIME Juncker is a part of it. Juncker and Orban both belong to the same European Grouping (The EPP) and now Juncker has joined calls for Fidesz to leave the EPP. https://euobserver.com/political/144212 https://euobserver.com/tickers/144202 Labour Split Fun The Labour has an antisemitism problem ongoing story came to a head when ~8 MPs (can't be sure that number won't have changed by the time this goes out) left the party to form a centrist, anti-brexit group/movement/no more please stop. One of their main talking points at the press conference essentially was "Jeremy hasn't done anything to address our antisemitism concerns", up front ahead of remembering that they also happen to disagree with him on almost all of his policy positions (https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2019/feb/18/several-labour-mps-set-to-quit-the-party-politics-live?page=with%3Ablock-5c6a8503e4b0bdb6048fde58). Saying there is a culture of antisemitism in the Labour party is partially a clever way of avoiding talking about why they disagree with policy (https://editor.currentaffairs.org/2019/02/how-to-think-clearly-about-anti-semitism-controversies-in-the-labour-party/). Apparently nobody told Bear Grylls that reality TV stars never have long careers. A dozen years after the cheeky Briton exploded onto American television, the king of survival entertainment is charging harder than ever, guiding A-listers into the wild for his NBC show Running Wild with Bear Grylls and launching innovative new series for Facebook and Netflix. He’s also building an adventure theme park in England and hosting a new survival race this spring outside Los Angeles that’s open to anyone. Outside executive editor Michael Roberts, who’s been covering Grylls for over a decade, tracked down the enduring icon on location in the Sierra Nevada to ask him: What’s your secret for survival? And why are you so convinced that going through tough times is good for all of us?

We hope you enjoy the episode and pass it along to your friends. Thanks for listening.
