This week, I'm joined by critic, author, and podcaster Alonso Duralde, who chose to discuss the 1982 Australian New Wave music film Starstruck. We also talk about Alonso's incredible new book Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film, working in video stores, 80s mind-bending musicals like The Apple and Can't Stop The Music, how filmmaker Gillian Armstrong's second film was nowhere near the vibe of her first (My Brilliant Career), the underground rabid fanbase for the film, the music in the film being written and performed by members of Split Enz and The Swingers, which bands were originally going to be involved in the film, what we hung on our teenage walls, bad 80s haircut experiences, how to sneak into a club, the confusing family dynamics in the film, the incredible Busby Berkeley tribute in the swimming pool sequence, where we imagine the characters in this film ended up, what stopped rock musicals being made for a spell and so much more.So let's all jump on top of the bar in unison, kick the drinks off, and magically know all the dance moves already on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!ALONSO DURALDE: @alonso.duralde@linoleumcasthttp://www.patreon.com/bfastalldayhttps://maximumfun.org/podcasts/maximum-film/https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/alonso-duralde/hollywood-pride/9780762485895/https://preorder-movie-little-christmas.carrd.co/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Hey everyone...welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! On this episode, I was joined by Homer Flynn, representing The Residents and all things Ralph Records, to talk about their incredible body of work, and my gawd, they performed part of their epic, Eskimo, live recently...incredible! This was my chance to ask about so many things that wouldn't be typically discussed regarding The Residents. I was extremely proud when, at the end of the interview, Homer thanked me for not asking about the eyeballs. Why would I?!!??!? (Episode 45 originally aired on June 18th, 2024). The original show notes:This week, we talked to Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation, who represents the mysterious, unknown collective, THE RESIDENTS, and discussed their legacy in film and video. Topics included the band's Theory Of Obscurity, which Resident is the easiest to negotiate with, how the band couldn't even give their initial records away and the moment that changed, creating the Ralph Records logo, what the Residents think of A.I., how they created their album artwork and music videos, collaborating with Night Flight, being The Residents during the pandemic, why The the collective gravitated to and stayed in S.F., working with John Sanborn & Graeme Whifler, The Residents' filmmaking heroes, making music videos in an era where there was no place to show them, how the Cryptic Corp deals with the band's larger than life concepts, the folly of trying to accomplish everything in one's lifetime, the story behind their Ugly Grey Theater not being allowed to exist, their early 70s feature length epic Vileness Fats and how it lead to the false start film Double Trouble which then led to their first feature length film 50 years later, Triple Trouble, and their discussion on their next large scale projects including a one song concert in Geneva and Paris. So come all you sinister exaggerators and let's talk the visuals of The Residents.THE RESIDENTS:https://www.residents.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. At the end of May, Elon Musk quit his role as Special Government Employee and his leadership of the the infamous DOGE. The official departure was relatively amicable, if a little awkward, in the Oval Office with Musk sporting a black eye, in which Trump thanked him for his service. But things quickly turned ugly, with personal attacks from both men. But aside from the egos clash, what does this divorce between Musk and Trump signify for the MAGA coalition? Does it point to a deep ideological tension between the Silicon Valley vision of politics and that of the likes of Steve Bannon? What is the level of influence of the people of Peter Tiel, who see democracy as disposable, on Trump's Government? And does Trump's Big Beautiful Bill reveal that the dominant ideology in Trump's government is still an old-fashioned version of "cut taxes and welfare"? Yascha Mounk is an Associate Professor of the Practice of International Affairs at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and the founder of Persuasion, an online magazine devoted to the defence of liberalism. Comedy troupe Wet Change met their strange Santa-like saviour, Tom Bombadil, who invited them to his home before vanishing in a puff of butterflies. Before heading out, the troupe scoured the crypt for loot and took stock of their fighting experience. Guy knew some taekwondo, Adam knew some karate, Del took a semester of archery, and Tyler found a locket that made him feel a bit safer. Del used her phone's compass to direct them to the river Withywindle and Bombadil's house, but when they arrived at the river, all except Tyler fell into a deep sleep and were grabbed by willow branches. Can Tyler save them all from a hostile tree? Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee. The sketch comedy troupe, Wet Change, was performing at Edinburgh Fringe when suddenly they were engulfed by mist. They emerged from the foggy swirl of leaves onto a forest road. They soon met a friendly and welcoming merchant, who was immediately slain by a terrifying cloaked figure on horseback. Del, Tyler, Adam, and Guy fled through the woods and sought shelter inside a crypt, only to find it was already occupied by a malevolent wight. They fought for their lives until they were rescued by a jolly rhyming man named Tom Bombadil. Will these perfectly normal humans survive long in this mysterious and deadly fantasy world? Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee. Rivka and Frank are joined by Brooklyn-based playwright Andy Boyd to talk about the Coen brothers' 2016 movie Hail, Caesar!. They get into the film's portrait of 1950s Hollywood, its sharp send-up of the capitalist studio system, and what it reveals about the uneasy marriage of religion, politics, and mass entertainment. For next week's movie, we'll be watching the 2014 horror movie It Follows.
Hello to you listening in Tokyo, Japan!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. My parents were 1st generation Americans. Their parents came from Poland seeking better opportunities. Like so many others, my maternal grandfather had grown up on a farm and sailed to America when he was in his teens.Over the years he forged metal in factories, fabricated refrigerator coils, drove a city bus, and taught himself how to oil paint. I treasure a few pieces of his art work reflecting his love of land. My grandfather used to say about tomorrow: “I'm like a fellow pushing a wheelbarrow. Why? Everything is still in front of me!” Even in the most difficult times I repeat his line to find some hope to carry on as he did.Story Prompt: What favorite line do you recall from someone you love? When you repeat it to yourself how does it make you feel? Write that story and tell it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!"
