Does this book have any meat or dairy in it?Q. You've done a lot of things in your career, but what makes you an authority on healthy eating and diabetes?Q. What surprised you most during your research and writing?Q. What's the one new habit that would make a big difference in someone's health?Q. Do you think there should be more cooperation and coordination between the food and healthcare industries?Q. How do you get kids to eat healthy?Q. What are your thoughts about what needs to be done to combat climate change?Q. What are your thoughts about fast food and the constant battle between fast food companies for market share?Q. Welcome to episode 867, the last in our new 7-part series with our fantastic partners, LUX Wines and Maze Row Wine Merchant. We are proud to present this series of interviews, diving deep into the heritage and legacy of their excellent Italian producers, celebrating the launch of the new brand identity for their importer, Maze Row Wine Merchant. This episode has John Irwin interviewing Bernardino Sani of the Argiano Winery. More about Argiano Winery: Argiano represents five centuries of excellence in Montalcino. CEO and winemaker Bernardino Sani is rooted in this territory and he worked his first internship in the Argiano cellar, after receiving his viticulture and winemaking degree in 2002. Today his passion also encompasses the need for sustainable winemaking. With an unwavering respect for nature and tradition, Argiano produces highly acclaimed wines that speak eloquently of their terroir. With 120 hectares at over 300 meters above sea level, the nearby sea breezes gently cool the aptly named historic Villa Bell'Aria. In 1967 Argiano made history with the Brunello of Montalcino, playing a key role as a founding organization in the birth of the Consortium, and later created the famous Solegno, Montepulciano's “Super Tuscan.” Argiano was the first company in Montalcino to become plastic-free, in 2019. All single-use plastics have been eliminated. The idea was inspired by desire to maintain the 4 Rs for the environment: Reduce, Recuperate, Recycle and Reuse. Under Sani's care, Argiano practices organic and sustainable agriculture. Natural insecticides are banned and biodiversity is nurtured. In the cellar, Bernardino has eliminated the use of barriques for the aging of Sangiovese in an effort to more clearly represent the terroir of Argiano. All these decisions: organics, holistic viticultural adjustments, and changes to less invasive winemaking philosophy means that Argiano is currently making the best wines of their storied history. Sani says, “We believe that the vine should not be designed to our liking but should be studied, understood, interpreted, and respected; we believe that it shouldn't be manipulated, but allowed to express itself, to define a place, a climate, a harvest. This is what Good Agriculture means to us. I have always loved the beauty of the countryside, the vineyards, the history, and the amazing wines produced here. For someone like me who is born in Tuscany, Argiano offers all the things we embrace.” To learn more about Argiano visit: https://www.argiano.net/en/ To learn more about Maze Row and the rich heritage of their Portfolio, visit: www.mazerow.com To learn more about Maze Row Wine Merchant, visit: https://www.mazerow.com https://www.instagram.com/mazerowwines/ https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=maze%20row%20wines%20merchant More about the host: John Irwin has been working in wine for fifteen years, starting as a grocery store merchandiser in Chicago in 2007, and then working his way through several different roles within the wholesaler side of the business, including sales team management and regional chain sales. In 2013, he joined the E&J Gallo Winery, working first in Central Illinois and then moving to Minnesota in 2015 to oversee the winery's bar and restaurant business across the state. In 2017, John moved to New York City - where he currently resides - to work in Gallo's Luxury Imports Division (a precursor to Maze Row Wine Merchants) where he oversaw the business in 12 states, called on national clients, and managed winemaker visits & events. Tune in every Saturday through to April 16th as we take an intimate look at these esteemed historic producers and their role as part of Maze Row. This episode has John Irwin interviewing Pietro Ratti of Cantina Ratti. Fresh from oenological school in Alba, Pietro was just 20 years old when his father, Renato Ratti, passed away suddenly, leaving him to take over the winery. Over the course of 30+ vintages, Pietro has not only proven himself an exemplary vintner, but an incredible ambassador for the region, and more specifically the commune of La Morra. Pietro served two terms as the President of the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani. It was during one of his terms in 2010 when he oversaw the completion of the official map of Barolo's MGAs, formally cementing the legendary map his father began drawing in 1965. One of Pietro's most significant achievements was building a new cantina atop a small hill in Annunziata, a short distance from the original cellars used by his father. Opened in time for the 2007 harvest, the stunning facility combines winemaking and cellar, along with a spectacular tasting facility; large windows afford guests breathtaking views of La Morra. It's there where you'll find Pietro in his natural element as a tireless host and a raconteur of the highest order. As former vice president of corporate communications for Netflix, our guest Steve Swasey had a front-row seat to Netflix's near-disastrous decision in 2011 to split its video streaming and DVD services. The backlash was swift and threatened to sink what, to that point, had been a highly successful company. In this episode, we talk about the missteps and miscalculations that led to that decision, the subsequent reversal of that decision, and, ultimately, the measures Netflix took to get back on track. Those measures largely reflect a set of principles Steve believes help businesses succeed over time. He calls it HIT (Humility, Integrity, and Trust) and has seen it work across multiple companies and industries. We also talk about the decades he's spent counseling senior executives on ways to better connect with their employees, customers, investors, and the marketplace, as well as how to weather professional crises. Does he believe there are CEOs willing to follow the three principles he espouses in his HIT approach? The simple answer is yes. For the longer answer, we delve into what happens when they commit to that course of action and what happens when they don't.GUEST: Steve Swasey, career communicator (Netflix, Kabam, Oracle), writer, and video producerGUEST BIO:Steve Swasey is a longtime communications specialist who has helped companies large and small shape and share their corporate narrative. He is a senior communications adviser with the media company Red Ventures and is a mentor for Road to Hire, a program that connects underrepresented youths to high-earning careers through paid technical training and college access. From 2005 to 2012, he helmed corporate communications at Netflix, and provided guidance and communications expertise during the company's challenging transition to streaming services. His career took several twists and turns on the road to Minnesota. A native Californian, John grew up with wine as a part of everyday life. It was not until his 21st birthday trip to Napa and a 13 year old bottle of Napa Cabernet that he considered wine as a career. After falling in love with wine chemistry and changing his major, John embarked on a number of different experiences both during his undergraduate and early career. Interning with Edna Valley Vineyards, John worked with Cool Climate grapes for 2 years while finishing his Bachelor of Science from Cal Poly Concentrating in Enology. Immediately upon graduation, he spent 3 years with E & J Gallo Winery in a number of roles and facilities learning not only the art and science of wine, but logistics and production efficiency. Desiring to head back into a hands on winemaking role, the next 3 years were co-managing a vineyard and crafting Estate products with Ecluse Wines in Paso Robles. The next 4 years would be spent working with winemakers the likes of Randall Graham, Alison Crowe, Jim McMahon, Nathan Carlson, Jeremy Leffert, Mike Sinor, Mike Drash and so many others. John joined Chankasaka in 2018 after making wine for Crow River Winery in 2017. Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It’s Thursday June 3rd Today - As the legislative session comes to a close some of the biggest bills have JUST hit the governor’s desk. So how is this last minute frenzy affecting the critical legislation that’s still on the table? But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to June 3rd, 1921 when a flood devastated Pueblo. It swept away hundreds of homes and caused great loss of life. The Arkansas River flood remains one of Colorado’s deadliest and most destructive natural disasters. Local governments ended up claiming nearly $20 million in damage. Now, our feature story. Colorado lawmakers are working at a breakneck pace to wrap up 2021 lawmaking. Some of the biggest bills of the session moved on to the governor’s desk on Wednesday, including an ambitious transportation finance program. But pundits are waiting with baited breath to see what happens with other critical legislation, including a plan to drive down the cost of health care. Politics reporter Jesse Paul explains how the last minute frenzy is shaping new laws. Read more about the fast and furious pace in the final days of the lawmaking session at coloradosun.com. And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Colorado has expanded the coronavirus vaccine sweepstakes to include people between the ages of 12 and 17. The first of five drawings for $50,000 scholarships is scheduled for Monday. Money for the winners will be placed in a 529 college savings account that can be drawn on to pay for tuition at any higher-ed institution, including credentialed technical programs. The idea behind the drawings is to get more young people inoculated against COVID. Coloradans ages 12-17 who get a coronavirus vaccine are eligible for $50,000 scholarships under new sweepstakes Lawmakers worried about increasing the misuse of high-potency cannabis by people under the age of 21 are taking aim at medical marijuana users. House Bill 1317 would expand use of the software the state uses to track cannabis from seed to sale to keep track of daily purchases by medical marijuana patients and prevent them from exceeding limits. Although recreational marijuana is limited to people age 21 and older, people of all ages can get a medical card. And some advocates say teen M-M-J patients buy large quantities of high-potency cannabis products and distribute it to unauthorized users. JBS in Greeley is resuming beef production after a ransomware attack over the weekend shut down lines worldwide. Cybersecurity expert Allan Liska says JBS was the largest food manufacturer yet to be hit by ransomware, in which criminal hackers paralyze entire networks by scrambling their data. He said at least 40 food companies have been targeted by ransomware gangs over the last year, including brewer Molson Coors and E & J Gallo Winery. https://coloradosun.com/2021/06/02/jbs-cyberattack-greeley-beef-processing/ For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. It's the early 1900’s and two young brothers emigrate from Italy to the US to make their fortunes. In California, they con, grift and bamboozle their fellow immigrants out of thousands of dollars, enough to start a wine business. But when Prohibition shuts that down, they dive into the dangerous game of bootlegging, with disastrous results. The older brother has two young sons, Ernest and Julio Gallo. He doesn’t know it yet, but his sons will eventually transform his sketchy legacy into the largest wine company in the world, E & J Gallo Winery. Tom Simoneau joins Steve Jaxon this week with his 2019 Wines of the Year and to interview Nicole Hitchcock, winemaker at J Vineyards and Tom's 2019 Winery of the Year. Today's show notes are by Tom Simoneau. Winery of the Year: J Vineyards & Winery With the J Cuvée 20 being my sparkling wine of the year, I’m here to tell you that’s just a small part of what is happening at J. Since it was purchased by E & J Gallo Winery in 2015, the brand continues to flourish under the new ownership. Winemaker Nicole Hitchcock oversees a portfolio that includes 1 Pinot Gris, 1 Vin Gris, 6 Chardonnays, 10 Pinot Noirs, and 8 Sparklers. I was the lucky guy who got to taste most of them last month. The tasting room is a must stop as they have an in-house chef to pair these stunning wines with some very creative small plates. Congratulations to J Vineyards & Winery as my 2019 Winery of the Year. jwine.com Best Whites Sparkling Wine: J Vineyard & Winery Cuvée 20, Nonvintage, Russian River Valley, $38. Initially introduced to commemorate their 20th Anniversary. Cuvée 20 today represents the workhorse of the J Sparkling wine portfolio. jwine.com Chardonnay: Sonoma Cutrer Vineyards 2017 Sonoma Coast Les Pierres, Estate Grown, $42. Long known for producing some of Sonoma County’s finest Chardonnay. Winemaker Mick Schroeter continues that tradition. sonomacutrer.com Sauvignon Blanc: Dry Creek Vineyard 2018 Dry Creek Valley, $20. With classic Dry Creek Sauvignon Blanc flavors this 100% Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in 84% stainless steel with 16% barrel fermented in neutral Acacia, French, and Chestnut barrels. Congrats to winemaker Tim Bell. drycreekvineyard.com Off Dry White: Mill Creek Vineyard & Winery 2018 Gewurztraminer, Dry Creek Valley, Estate, $27. To say Mill Creek is a family affair is an understatement. Bill and Yvonne Kreck are the hands on owners and grape growers while son Jeremy handles the winemaking. millcreekwinery.com Alternative White: Gordian Knot Winery 2018 Albarino, Russian River Valley, Elieo Vineyard, $28. Unfortunately this will be the last vintage from Gordian Knot, due to the untimely death of co-owner and winemaker Tim Meinken. If you’ve never tried Albarino, think of it this way… if a Sauvignon Blanc wanted to be a Riesling it would be an Albarino. gordianknotwinery.com Best Value White: Kim Crawford 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, $18. Often discounted, this is a can’t miss dry white that falls right in the middle of grapefruit, grass, and gooseberry. Crisp, clean, and I’ve seen this wine as low as $10. kimcrawfordwines.com Most Fun Wine: Sterling Vineyards has released a trio of wines in recyclable aluminum bottles. The 375ml Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Rosé are real wines full of varietal character. They are perfect when glass bottles, cork pullers, and glasses are not appropriate. $7.99 for 375ml. sterlingvineyards.com Sweet Wine: Simi Winery 2018 Late Harvest Riesling, Alexander Valley, 375ml, $35. When you talk to winemakers this is probably the most difficult and expensive wine to make. This Simi is the best I’ve had in years. Dessert in a glass. simiwinery.com Luxury Wine: Maritana 2017 Chardonnay, Dutton Hanson Hill, Russian River Valley, $90. This is the new project from Donald Patz of Patz and Hall fame. This 1.8 acre parcel farmed by the Dutton family is vinified using only 27% new French Oak to focus on the fruit and minerality of the site. That’s what Donald Patz has been doing since he sold his winery. donaldpatzwinegroup.com Rosé: Alexander Valley Vineyards 2018 Dry Rosé of Sangiovese, Alexander Valley, $16. This wine was born to be a Rosé. Picked at a lower sugar to finish dry at 13% alcohol. Fruit forward and as versatile for a food pairing as there is. avvwine.com Best Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon: Duckhorn Vineyards 2016 Rutherford, Napa Valley, $100. Duckhorn may have made its reputation with Merlot, but those of us in the know have always had our ey...

Marisa Sergi is the CEO of RedHead Wine. Her love affair with wine started in the basement of her parents' home with a sippy cup at age 5. In fifth grade, she went public with her dream of being a winemaker. A third-generation winemaker, she came by her career choice naturally, having grown up in the family winery business, and in 2015, she graduated from Cornell with a degree in Enology and Viticulture. She also interned for and worked at E&J Gallo Winery in California. Her senior year capstone project at Cornell led to the launch of RedHead Wine - a unique blend of California Zinfandel and Chilean Carménère. Although Marisa's only been working full-time on RedHead since last August, it's already available at nearly 200 stores in Ohio. And she has been hard at work on a Provence-style rosé, with a profile that is fruit forward but clean, crisp and refreshing. In this episode, you will learn the importance of asking for help and feedback on your work, the value of in-person connections to grow your online business, what it means to be a woman in business, and how to master the power of unconventional thinking.

Join Branden and special guest Allison Wells as we talk fermentation and how one becomes a food scientist. Show notes: Allison Wells is a graduate of the Purdue University School of Food Science. While at Purdue, she spent a summer working in France on a small, family owned winery where she helped with odd jobs and selling wine at the local farmers markets and wine shops. This experience sparked her interest in fermentation and a desire to learn more about microbiology and biochemistry. After graduation, she completed an internship at E&J Gallo Winery in their enology research lab. Allison was also awarded a two-year assistantship at Oregon State University, earning a M.S. in Food and Fermentation Science, with a focus on wine microbiology. Allison became an expert in native isolates and helped to discover Rogue’s ‘Beard Yeast’. She is currently working at a freelance fermentation scientist helping the local San Diego community to better understand fermentation, food science, and urban microflora.
