In s3e36, Platemark host Ann Shafer speaks with printer/publisher and author Phil Sanders about the state of the ecosystem. Phil has a finger in nearly every pie in the ecosystem, so after a Platemark listener wrote in to ask about breaking into the publishing end of things, Ann turned to Phil. They talk about the history of print publishing after the print boom quieted down in the 1980s, why the prices of prints are in need of revision, and how to read a Joan Mitchell painting, among many other things. Their conversation stretches well past two hours and so Ann split it into two episodes. Phil Sanders. Prints and Their Makers. Hudson, NY: Princeton Architectural Press, 2021. In this episode of Lexman, we're joined by Steven Pinker, a world-renowned cognitive scientist, to discuss the adorable bushbaby, the curious rocklings, the enigmatic anelace butterfly, and the striking collarette pierid. We learn about the history and behavior of these interesting creatures, and find out how their natural habitats might be affecting their populations. This is an excellent episode for anyone interested in biology, conservation, or Out of Africa travel.
The latest episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with tuba player Bob Stewart.I have said all season long that we're going to be exploring a single subject for ten episodes, and that subject is fusion. But as I hope has become clear over the course of the five previous episodes, during which I interviewed techno pioneer Jeff Mills, drummer Lenny White, trumpeter Randy Brecker, pianist Cameron Graves, and guitarist Brandon Ross, most of whom come from different musical generations and are not peers, when I say the word fusion, I'm talking about a state of mind, not a style or a genre. It's not what you play, it's how you approach music-making.I understand that when most people hear the word fusion, they think of the big name bands from the 1970s: the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, and Weather Report. Those groups, and the Miles Davis bands from 1969 to 1975, and many other less immediately recognizable groups, all did a particular thing, playing extremely complex music that blurred the lines between progressive rock and jazz. We talked about those acts in the second and third episodes this season, with Lenny White and Randy Brecker, both of whom were around then and were actively participating in making some of that music. If you think of fusion as a mindset, though, rather than a style, the discussion gets a lot more interesting. And that's really how I prefer to think about it. Because the people who fall into the latter category are the ones who I find to be the most interesting, and the ones who are more likely to have careers where almost every record they play on is at least worth hearing, worth giving a chance. You may not like all of it. But they're creative enough that they've earned the benefit of the doubt.A perfect example of this is Bill Laswell, the bassist and producer. He doesn't use the term fusion. He calls what he does “collision music,” bringing together players from wildly disparate areas — stylistic areas, and literal geographical ones, putting African players together with guys from Southeast Asia and New York rock artists and whoever else he thinks has something to say — and seeing what comes out when they all work together toward a common goal. And sometimes you get something glorious, that you never could have predicted or imagined beforehand. Like pairing Pharoah Sanders with a troupe of Gnawa musicians from North Africa. Or putting improvising guitarist Derek Bailey together with drummer Jack DeJohnette, DJ Disk from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and Laswell himself on bass. I heard a recording of that group just a few days ago, and you might not expect it to work, but it really, really did.Bob Stewart is a fusion artist in that he takes an instrument that has had a relatively low profile in jazz for decades — the tuba — and created a variety of fascinating contexts for it. Not only on his own albums, but particularly in partnership with the late alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe. They began working together in the early 1970s, and Stewart's playing on some of Blythe's albums, most notably Bush Baby, where it's just the two of them and a percussionist, and on Lenox Avenue Breakdown and Illusions, where they had some incredible bands that included at different times James “Blood” Ulmer on guitar, Cecil McBee on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, James Newton on flute, and Abdul Wadud on cello. On the album Blythe Spirit, Blythe and Stewart record a version of the spiritual “Just A Closer Walk With Thee,” with Amina Claudine Myers on organ, that's absolutely amazing. We talk about that piece a little bit in this interview. He's worked with a lot of other artists over the course of his career, too, including Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, Carla Bley, Gil Evans, the Jazz Composers Orchestra, Bill Frisell, the David Murray Big Band, Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, and on and on. The reason he's able to do so many different things is that his approach to the tuba is really expansive, conceptually speaking. He treats it as much more than a substitute bass. He understands its full range, and the subtleties it's capable of expressing, and he uses it in ways lots of other people would never even think of. On his own albums First Line, Then & Now, and Connections — Mind the Gap, he puts together really unorthodox collections of personnel. For example on Then & Now, which was originally released in 1996 but just recently popped up on Bandcamp, some of the tracks feature two trumpets, trombone, French horn, and drums, while another is a duo with pianist Dave Burrell, and others have trumpet, alto sax, guitar, and drums. And Connections — Mind the Gap, which is from 2014, features tuba, guitar and drums, with trumpet and trombone on two tracks, but then on five others it's the core trio plus a string quartet. Now that's very much a kind of fusion — jazz which is already in an avant-garde zone, combined with chamber music.Bob Stewart is a fascinating guy, an endlessly creative spirit who has done a tremendous amount to change the image of his instrument in order to pave the way for guys like Theon Cross, who plays tuba with Sons of Kemet, or with Jose Davila, who plays with Henry Threadgill's Zooid. I really enjoyed this conversation, and I hope you enjoy listening to it.Music in this episode:Bob Stewart, “Bush Baby” (Connections – Mind The Gap)Arthur Blythe, “Lenox Avenue Breakdown” (Lenox Avenue Breakdown)Bob Stewart, “The Rambler” (from Then & Now)

Today on The Fatboy Show, Fatboy speaks to media personality, DJ Bush Baby birth name Michael Benjamin Owor about his plans for the new year and his journey to recovery after a near fatal accident.
This week we head back to Africa to cover one of their more endearing primates, the Bush Baby. Specifically, we are covering the critically endangered Rhondo Dwarf Bush Baby. There are approximately 20 different species of Bush Baby in Africa, which are also called Galagos and resemble some of our earliest primate ancestors. The Rhondo Dwarf Bush baby is native to the coastal region of Tanzania living in the evergreen forests in the Tanzanian highlands. Due to deforestation and human encroachment, this species is at extinctions door step. Only two small populations of these animals exist today, separated by over 250 miles (400 km). While highlighting this species, we also talk about some generalities of all the species of Bush Babies and just what makes them so special. In this episode, I will be telling you about the Bush Baby and my own experience with this creature. The Bush Baby is one of the most popular urban legends in Nigeria and every student has either heard of or heard from the Bush Baby.If you have had any encounters or experiences with these stories, or if there are any other scary African stories you would like to hear, please send an email to africanhorrorpodcast@gmail.comSome Sources:https://brittlepaper.com/2015/11/gravity-faith-suzanne-ushie-african-story/Kindle Unimited Free Trial (affiliate link): https://amzn.to/3vbcokmMusic: https://www.purple-planet.com

Alecia Staines was born rurally. She continued to grow up in rural Queensland and so she always had a keen interest in ensuring equity in maternity service delivery. She grew up on ‘wheat country' in a rural community called The Gums on the Darling Downs. Birthing options were available locally but not on Christmas Day so when Alecia's mother went into labour she was shipped off in an ambulance, 2 hours away, during labour to birth Alecia in the city hospital. Whilst personally being born outside of her rural town was the path Alecia trod upon her own entrance into the world she saw a different side of birth when growing up. In her rural community and environment, she was exposed to a localised maternity care as the ‘norm' with in town access to midwife led care and GP obstetric back-up model. Alecia's first birth was a rural birth. She was living in Goondiwindi in rural Queensland. This birthing experience was positive. Here she encountered the potential and possibilities of a community maternity practice. Alecia could walk from her rural home to her maternity appointments. She paints quite a different and beautifully calm image of ease. When I compare this to the other stories there is a stark contrast. I'm saddened that the connectedness, localised care model and standard of care seen in Alecia's first birth seems inaccessible to rural women living in communities with closed ‘historic' maternity facilities and I'm not the only one. Alecia has been a maternity advocate for 9 years. Alecia's passion for local services developed from a young age and as it gestated over time it grew into this vibrant passion for equity and local access to quality care for rural women. Alecia's own experiences sparked something as she was directly exposed to quality care and she was further spurred as she heard of the inequities in other communities and the removal/closure of maternal health centres servicing small communities due to numbers. From a very early age Alecia was acutely aware of the contradiction between systematic birth and birth in nature. Seeing animals' birth unassisted did not fit with the ‘obstetric specialist' definition of care model availability that people are sold. Her experiences have supported her high standard for rural care birthing models and through her strength and ability as a generator/advocator Alecia has made her standard known. She united and connected with other like-minded women through the ‘Maternity Consumer Network'. She ignited passionate, research-based debate and cultivated positive relationships with boards, politicians, journalists and care providers to see that the “Bush Baby Crisis” gained attention and traction. The “Baby Bush Crisis” movement did not happen overnight but through positive and persistent data and anecdotal journalism the stories and needs of pre and postnatal women were heard and the health minister made a commitment to pilot four rural maternal health services and not make further closures of rural birthing facilities. In this interview you will hear how empowering a local maternity service can be and why “it makes no sense at all that having no service at all is safer”. Alecia also provides sage and actionable advice to women in rural centres and invites them to make contact with the Maternity Consumer Network. Alecia now has 5 kids and juggles advocacy with child birth education (hypnobirthing), pre and postnatal yoga and has a keen interest in ongoing learning. From Disney “Live Action,” director Jon Favreau's all-new "The Lion King" journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub's arrival. Scar, Mufasa's brother-and former heir to the throne-has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba's exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.Director: Jon FavreauWriters: Jeff Nathanson (screenplay by), Brenda ChapmanStarring:Donald Glover...Simba (voice)Beyoncé...Nala (voice) (as Beyoncé Knowles-Carter)Chiwetel Ejiofor...Scar (voice)John Oliver...Zazu (voice)James Earl Jones...Mufasa (voice)John Kani...Rafiki (voice)Alfre Woodard...Sarabi (voice)JD McCrary...Young Simba (voice)Shahadi Wright Joseph...Young Nala (voice)Penny Johnson Jerald...Sarafina (voice)Keegan-Michael Key...Kamari (voice)Eric André...Azizi (voice)Florence Kasumba...Shenzi (voice)Seth Rogen...Pumbaa (voice)Billy Eichner...Timon (voice)Chance the Rapper...Bush Baby (voice) (as Chance Bennett)We discuss Disney's "live action" The Lion King. Session #58 5th July 2019Having not uploaded any shows in several months (literally) I feel I should apologise and also say Thank You to the few of you that follow any of my progress here. This year has been one of the hardest in my life, but also one of the best! This set was streamed Live on 5th July 2019 making it the latest show to be aired.I have recorded all of the previous shows, having the time to sort them all out might, realistically, not happen, but who knows. I can only try to get them up. What's the best that can happen?I really enjoyed mixing this set, I am finally happy with the setup I have and everything seems to have clicked with how I am using it. I hope you enjoy the final outcome. There were lots of postive comments flying through the chatroom about it and I got goose bumps a few times during the performance. As with all the sets that any of the DJs that have been on our show, nothing is pre-planned, all on the fly mixing, tune selection etcEnjoyDirect Download -> Show #58Get the Podcast -> iTunesWill MD (aka Phat Farmer)1. In 2016, researchers at the University of California - Berkeley created Salto (Saltatorial Locomotion on Terrain Obstacles). Salto is a tiny jumping robot that can leap off of the ground, hit a spot on the wall, and then jump off the wall. Cool, but limited.Since then, the team has added a host of capabilities. Salto can now run or jump for more than 10 minutes, taking as many as 100 jumps in that period. The remote-controlled robot can also jump four-feet high, run 8-10 mph and has the ability to clear various obstacles. It also has the ability to follow, land and launch from moving targets, like a tiny little parkour robot.Because it's so quick, it can land and launch off of surfaces that normal robots would simply slide off of. It also has onboard sensors that help it stay upright and change position while in the air to make sure it lands correctly.Next, the team wants to make Salto more agile, including the ability to jump on/from various surfaces, like gravel. Right now, it’s restricted to wood, brick, grass and concrete. The researchers also want to add arms, so it can grab onto objects after it jumps. The design was inspired by galagoes, which are also known as bush babies. The team recently presented its work at the 2019 International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Montreal.Like other robots that were designed with a unique set of skills, Salto could one day be used for search and rescue missions, looking for survivors while navigating unpredictable terrain.

The Bush Baby, an anime based on a Canadian novel, was one of a minority of World Masterpiece Theatre titles to receive an English dub. This dub aired on TVO and Access Alberta in 1993 and then... vanished. It was thought to be lost forever, until it was finally recovered in its entirety earlier this year. Rania, who had the series archived for years, joins me in a retrospective look back on both the show itself, as well as the story of how this important historical artifact was preserved for so long. Mike Toole also joins us to shed a little bit of light on World Masterpiece Theatre licensing, and why this is such an important find. And yes, he does sing the theme song! Rania's YouTube Channel where The Bush Baby English dub has been uploaded: https://www.youtube.com/user/Talim2004/videos For more extensive information, visit www.zannen.ca Theme song by Karl Olson. Here’s a favourite for dancing around Paul’s living room. Many of the tracks here also remind me of Cuneyt, who stayed with Andie and I for a while when he split up with his ex. One Saturday evening we got trashed and danced away wearing a pair of headphones each. The tracklist is a chunky selection of disco and filtered house anthems which I much overplayed at the time. Daddy’s Favourite is always a crowd pleaser, and the Phunkie Souls track should be one of my Desert Island selections. ‘For real’ by Bushbaby is beautifully lush. Excuse the pop tracks, it’s probably a result of working at Kiss at the time. project:update > update 12.1 > november 99 1 triple x - feel the same 2 daddy’s favourite - i feel good things for you - original mix 3 sunkids feat. chance - rescue me - bibi & martini ‘999’ funk mix 4 madison avenue - don’t call me baby - original 12” mix 5 michael moog - that sound - full intention remix 6 supakings - back and forth - supakings vocal mix 7 phunkie souls - tha music - knee deep club mix 8 bushbaby - for real 9 big time charlie - on the run - original mix 10 defunk - pleasure love - cosmak dub 11 hurricane - on & on - origianl 12” mix 12 alena - turn it around - another mix 97.3 MB AAC File 192kbps
