In this episode we investigate the claim made by conservative Christians every year that Christmas is being threatened by forces they are weirdly shy about specifically naming. But of course the first and foremost piece of cognitive dissonance we must force our way through when examining the threat to Christmas is where it has ACTUALLY come from, historically. Christmas had been frowned upon and ignored in a lot of Protestant places throughout Europe for as long as the Protestant movement had existed. Their reasoning was pretty straight forward. Unbelievably straightforward and logical for Christians actually. The Christmas celebration is simply not Christian. The earliest mention of any Christmas celebration is from a Roman Bishop in 129ce. Long after the New Testament authors had passed. So while not celebrated by some Europeans, the first official state ban was introduced by the British Puritan Parliament in 1647. And that's where our story will start. It features cameo guest star appearances from Oliver Cromwell, King Charles II, Jesus Christ, USA, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Henry Ford, Santa Claus, Barry Goldwater, John Birch Society, COMMUNISTS, United Nations, Peter Brimelow, VDARE, Alien Nation: Common Sense About America's Immigration Disaster, Immigration and Bad Social Policies Don't Mix; A White Ethnic Core, Southern Poverty Law Center, Anti-Defamation League, Virginia Dare, Brown Vs Board of Education, Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC, The Failure of Multiculturalism: How the pursuit of diversity is weakening the American Identity, DACA, New York Times, Bill O'Reilly, Christmas Under Siege, Fox News, Canada, Macy's, Amazon, Pat Buchanan, Shark Week, John Gibson, The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought, Alliance Defending Freedom, Alan Sears, The ACLU vs. America: Exposing the Agenda to Redefine Moral Values, Ebenezer Scrooge, Wikipedia, Tennessee, Sarah Palin, Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas, Joshua Feuerstein, Starbucks REMOVED CHRISTMAS from their cups because they hate Jesus, Donald Trump and Liberty University. #666 #SketchComedy #Sketch #Comedy #Sketch Comedy #Atheist #Science #History #Atheism #Antitheist #ConspiracyTheory #Conspiracy #Conspiracies #Sceptical #Scepticism #Mythology #Religion #Devil #Satan #Satanism #Satanist #Skeptic #Debunk #Illuminati #SatanIsMySuperhero #Podcast #funny #sketch #skit #comedy #comedyshow #comedyskits #HeavyMetal #weird #RomanEmpire #Rome #AncientRome #Romans #RomanEmperor 666, SketchComedy, Sketch, Comedy, Sketch Comedy, Atheist, Science, History, Atheism, Antitheist, Conspiracy Theory, Conspiracy, Conspiracies, Sceptical, Scepticism, Mythology, Religion, Devil, Satan, Satanism, Satanist, Skeptic, Debunk, Illuminati, Heavy Metal, weird, Roman Empire, Rome, Romans, Roman Emperor, SatanIsMySuperhero,

Set during the late 1500s, a period known as the age of exploration and the height of the Tudor dynasty, the story unfolds amidst England's rise to global power, shortly after the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. In 1587, under a charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh sent 115 colonists to establish an English settlement on Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina. Led by Governor John White, the group included men, women, and children, including White's daughter, Eleanor Dare, and his granddaughter, Virginia Dare, who was the first English child born in the Americas. However, after White's return to England to gather supplies, he was delayed for three years by England's war with Spain. When he finally returned to Roanoke in 1590, he found the settlement completely deserted. The only clues left behind were the word “CROATOAN” carved into a fence post and the letters “CRO” etched on a nearby tree. These inscriptions led White to believe the colonists had relocated to Croatoan Island (now Hatteras Island), but he was unable to confirm this due to bad weather and damaged ships, which forced his return to England. No further expeditions to locate the colonists were ever mounted, and the fate of the settlement remained unknown. Several theories have been proposed over the centuries to explain the disappearance of the Roanoke colonists. One of the most widely accepted is that the settlers may have integrated with local Native American tribes to survive. Other possibilities include an attack by Spanish forces or that the colonists perished while attempting to sail back to England. Recent archaeological discoveries, such as English artifacts found on Hatteras Island, lend some credence to the integration theory, though conclusive evidence remains elusive. This episode explores these and other theories, while examining the ongoing cultural significance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, and the modern technologies being used in the quest to solve this historic mystery. What happened to the ‘Lost Colony' at Roanoke? It's a mystery that's intrigued American historians for centuries - and one that began on 22nd July, 1587, when the settlers, led by John White, first landed there; only to discover that a previous colony had been wiped out by hostile tribespeople. This new settlement, however, was under immense pressure to succeed - as it was financed by Sir Walter Raleigh, who needed to establish a permanent colony by 1591 to retain his charter from Queen Elizabeth. Yet, a few years later, White returned to find the colony abandoned, with the word "Croatoan" carved into a post. Where had they gone? In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly investigate the theories offered up over the years; explain how the narrative of hostile natives skewed the data; and check out the "Dare Stones", claiming to be messages from Virginia Dare's mother… Further Reading: • ‘The Lost Colony of Roanoke' (Reader's Digest, 1992): https://www.historyfiles.co.uk/FeaturesAmericas/NorthColonial_English02.htm • 'The Roanoke Island Colony: Lost, and Found?' The origins of one of America's oldest unsolved mysteries can be traced to August 1587, when a group of about 115 English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of what is now North Carolina. Later that year, it was decided that John White, governor of the new colony, would sail back to England in order to gather a fresh load of supplies. But just as he arrived, a major naval war broke out between England and Spain, and Queen Elizabeth I called on every available ship to confront the mighty Spanish Armada. In August 1590, White finally returned to Roanoke, where he had left his wife and daughter, his infant granddaughter (Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas) and the other settlers three long years before. He found no trace of the colony or its inhabitants, and few clues to what might have happened, apart from a single word—“Croatoan”—carved into a wooden post. Sources: Cascone, S. (2021, December 9). We continue on with missing children this week with Virginia Dare. Virginia Dare was the first english born child in America in 1587, then she went missing. Not only did she go missing but the whole colony of Roanoke went missing and it all still remains a mystery to this day. When we were looking for stories we both found this one odd since articles singled her out while the whole colony was missing. The lost colony of Roanoke has been a long standing mystery with several investigations as well as making its way into pop culture, most notably for me was when it was in the show Supernatural. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/support

Venus Boy by Lee Sutton audiobook. If you ever make a trip to the green planet of Venus, the first thing you'll see will be the fifty-foot high statue of Venus' greatest hero. It stands on the very top of towering New Plymouth Rock at the edge of the old colony of New Plymouth. Even from the rocket cradle, anyone can tell that the statue is of a twelve-year-old boy smiling up at the Venusian jewel bear perched on his shoulder. Cut into the huge rock below the statue are the words, "Virgil Dare (Johnny) Watson And the Marva, Baba. May their Friendship Endure!" Virgil Dare Watson, called Johnny by his friends, was the first human being born on Venus. He was named after Virginia Dare, the first pioneer child born in North America, and for a long time he was the only child on all Venus. And that would have been a lonely thing to be if it had not been for Baba. Baba, the bear, was not only Johnny's pet, but his best friend, too, and the only one who knew about his three secrets. Because of these secrets, Johnny got himself, his jewel bear, Baba, and the whole colony of New Plymouth into desperate trouble. And because of these secrets, he also became a hero worthy of a statue—Venus' greatest hero.

Fred discusses Virginia Dare, who on this date in 1657, became the first English child born in a New World English colony. Oddly, the colony mysteriously vanished. www.rockysealemusic.com https://rockysealemusic.com/wow-i-didn-t-know-that-or-maybe-i-just-forgot https://www.facebook.com/150wordspodcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rocky-seale7/message

Recruited by Sir Walter Raleigh, among these settlers were John White, his pregnant daughter, Eleanor Dare, her husband Ananias Dare, and the Indian chief Manteo, who had become an English ally during a previous visit in Britain.

In this episode we wrap up loose ends before moving on down the timeline: What happened after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and what happened after John White left the Roanoke Colony in August 1587? We also see what happened to all those Elizabethan characters we've been talking about for the last three months, including Francis Drake, Elizabeth herself, John Hawkins, Martin Frobisher, Francis Walsingham, and Philip II. Finally, we explore the long-term consequences of both the Armada and the Roanoke Colony for the History of the Americans. Oh, and we read a poem in the spirit of the day. On August 28, 1587, John White, the leader of the last Roanoke Colony, climbed on board Edward Spicer's flyboat and returned to England. His mandate was to secure supplies and more settlers to reinforce the people he had left behind, who included his own daughter and granddaughter, Eleanor and Virginia Dare. He would not in fact be able to return for almost three years, by which time the roughly 116 colonists back in North Carolina had vanished completely, leaving behind only scant clues. White would take three years to return because an undeclared but existential war had broken out between England and Spain, known to history as the Anglo-Spanish War of 1585-1604. The war was existential not for England the country – had Philip II and Spain won the war, England would have continued to exist as a country, and in their daily lives most English people would have seen very little change. Philip II would have become King of England, as he had already been years before during his marriage to Mary Tudor, and the liturgy at church on Sunday would have changed in ways that we moderns would have regarded as hilariously trivial. However, the war was existential for Elizabeth I and her Protestant elite who, among other things, sustained English naval power and supported North American colonization. It is very hard to imagine that an England ruled by Philip II and an entirely different batch of nobles, Catholic “recusants” emerged from the political shadows, would have settled North America. Nor would there have been successful Protestant Dutch settlement, because the defeat of Elizabeth would also have meant the end of Dutch Protestantism as a political force. The city in that harbor discovered by Verrazzano more than sixty years before would more likely have been New Seville or New Lisbon than New Amsterdam or New York. Fortunately, the English had Sir Francis Drake, who in the spring of 1587 would raid the Spanish port of Cadiz and occupy Sagres roadstead off Cape St. Vincent, destroying more than 100 Spanish and Portuguese ships and boats and much of the supplies for the Spanish Armada. And then he would go on to grab a Portuguese treasure ship that would substantially bolster Elizabeth's finances just when she needed it most. This episode looks at the fate of the 15 settlers Sir Richard Grenville had left on Roanoke Island in 1586, and the expedition of 1587, which Sir Walter Ralegh, John White, and more or less everybody else intended to land at Chesapeake Bay. They never got there, and after August 26, 1587, no English person would ever see them again. Oh, and we meet Virginia Dare! Link to the Merch! Do you know Virginia Dare? We know very little of the Roanoke Colony and its infamous infant, Virginia. Yet her story echoes themes in American history – perhaps even the history of European colonization as a whole – that we still debate today. While I recount her story in Exploring American Girlhood in 50 Historic Treasures, there was so much more I wanted to discuss. The self-made man, women's roles, and non-English colonies are all themes in her story. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/girlspeak/support

Spooky Szn Special (Episode 110) October 31st 2020 Roanoke Island’s Lost Colony Today on Baked and Awake My First Conspiracy- The Lost English Colony of Roanoke Island. This is both a Ghost Story, therefore fitting for a show released on Halloween, and to my mind a compelling example of competing versions of history that can be found not only here, but in so many stories we have preserved and related as “facts” throughout human history. I’m about to share with you a whole bunch of very well documented details that I nevertheless doubt you’ve heard anywhere else. As I am indicating, this is a story many, if not most of you think you already know. I hope today to at least tell those of you in that camp a little bit more than you knew before, maybe a lot more- and for those fortunate enough to be learning about the Lost Colony for the first time today, I welcome you most warmly of all, and I promise to treat this opportunity of telling you this tale as the honor that in many ways it is. As always I’ll remind you that there are detailed show notes for every episode and I usually include just about every source I cite during the show so that you can perform your own research to your satisfaction should you care to investigate further. talktous@bakedandawake is the email to use if you want to get in touch and talk further about any questions you have, or for anything else, really. Now, to do this Roanoke story any justice whatsoever, we are gonna have to use my personal Temporal Panopticon, otherwise known as a 2018 Mac Mini with two thrift store displays and a just decent broadband internet connection. We will use this magic mirror in order to peer into the mists of time. And since this time machine is so powerful, we have the opportunity to not only travel back to 1587, the year of the founding of the famed Lost Colony, but indeed to two years earlier, when the first colony at Roanoke was founded, only to be abandoned in only about 9 months. But really, why would we stop there? Because even in 1585 there were more colonies and “expeditions” also known as “raiding parties” than I can easily count, so much so that we will come back to this point in a few minutes after we ever so briefly take a moment to remember, and to a small extent name, the existing inhabitants of the lands in question, which were at the time of this particular moment in history, already engaging in persistent, decades long campaigns of trading, raiding, and enslaving the indigenous people of North America for the enrichment of themselves and their European Patrons, and with an eye to completely acquiring said lands while subduing the People of those lands. This destiny and mission was laid out from just about Day One, as far as I can tell. This episode promises to be a long one. I’m talking plug in your phone, grab a cup of tea, roll something extra frosty up and probably pack a backup bowl because the ride is long and bumpy, and ends in a book from the 1970’s that I found on my own bookshelf that I just knew had to have a little tidbit for me. And that book did not disappoint. And now, away we go, starting with... Welcome to Finding Our Freedom today is AUG 18th2020 and this is Episode 1 Title – Maslows Hierarchy of Needs This day in History: In 1587, Virginia Dare became the first child of English parents to be born in present-day America, on what is now Roanoke Island in North Carolina. The Roanoke colony ended up mysteriously disappearing, becoming one of America's oldest mysteries. The mystery began in August of 1590 when John White, governor of the new province, who had sailed back to England to gather a fresh load of supplies returned. Once there he found his wife and daughter, his infant granddaughter (Virginia Dare), and the other settlers were gone. He found no trace of the colony or its inhabitants, and few clues to what might have happened, apart from a single word—"Croatoan"—carved into a wooden post. Investigations into the fate of the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke have continued over the centuries, but no one has come up with a satisfactory answer. We will probably never know what happened to them but must remember that they began the first English settlement later, leading to what is now the United States. I find it fitting that on the first day that this PodCast air is the anniversary of the first recorded birth in what is now America. On Virginias' birthday, we start our journey to find more freedom in our lives. I wanted to begin by talking about our need for additional freedom and the right to take care of our selves and our needs. This all is in line with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Those wishing to control our decisions use it against us so we need to understand it for several reasons. First to gain control back into our own lives and then to recognize and defend against others trying to control our lives. During this episode, I'll be concentrating on the basic needs that we all have. I have a copy of the entire hierarchy in the podcast notes though. At the base, we have our physiological and safety needs. This includes where we get our food, warmth, rest, security, and safety from, and whoever controls this will control us. Until we can fulfill these needs we can't move onto improving in other areas that we need. Many of us try to make ends meet through credit cards or other programs and we make our decisions based on those needs never improving in our lives. The more control we can take back the more freedom we will enjoy. This is also why the more control we have over our finances the more freedom we have. By changing a few things in our lives moving away from using credit cards and other debt the more control we gain over our basic needs. Unfortunately, many people don't realize how much control they don't have, and every time something sounds like it might give them an edge in gaining control instead of thinking about it and weighing the advantages and disadvantages they jump right on the opportunity digging themselves in even deeper. Instead of fulfilling the need for food by supplementing your food supply with a garden or other means people seem to concentrate on going to restaurants. There is a lot to be said for someone who learns to cook instead of popping a box of something in the oven or even worse getting it from a restaurant every night. By taking fresh ingredients and even better something you grew yourself and making something delicious you will find that you save money and feel better after each meal. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to get out of these traps. Most of which is through making wise decisions and putting away a little for the future. Don't you think it's about time that we take our freedom back from those that would hold it. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/finding-our-freedom/support

During his trial, Northumberland pointed out that it couldn't be treason to be acting by royal warrant and that some of those judging him had acted under the same warrant, but it did him no good. Find out what happened at his trial, what his reaction was to his sentence, and what happened to William Parr, Marquess of Northampton, and John Dudley, Earl of Warwick, who were tried with him, in today's talk from author Claire Ridgway. You can see this podcast as a video at the following link:https://youtu.be/RU5aZO3uFA0 Northumberland’s arrest - https://youtu.be/iR5B6U8_raI Also on this day in Tudor history, 18th August 1587, the first child born to English settlers in the New World was born in the Roanoke Colony. Her name was Virginia Dare. This colony has become known as the lost colony because all 115 colonists disappeared. Find out more in last year’s video - https://youtu.be/lZDaYgPfxoQ

Few realize or remember that the very beginnings of English colonization in North America were fraught with tremendous hardship, peril, and connected to an enduring mystery. A charter was granted to Sir Walter Raleigh by Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1584 to explore and colonize lands unclaimed by Christian kingdoms, south of Newfoundland, and north of Spanish Florida. With hopes of finding vast riches as the Spanish Empire had done in Central and South America and a possible Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean, Raleigh had initiated two attempts at establishing an English settlement along the coast of present-day North Carolina. The first colony was set up by Governor Ralph Lane in 1585 on Roanoke Island, located in the Outer Banks. This enterprise would end in failure and evacuation from scare resources and hostile relations with the local Native American tribes. A second attempt at a colony came in 1587 with Governor John White and around 115 men, women, and children who had agreed to settle in this wondrous but challenging new country. Unfortunately, a curious order left these hapless planters on Roanoke Island, which had now become dangerous from the actions of the former colony. The colonists persuaded White to return to England to plead for help, but due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances, he was not able to return to Roanoke until 1590. When White and the relief mission finally made their way to their last known location, the settlers had vanished, including White's daughter and his infant granddaughter. White's granddaughter Virginia Dare would be known as the first English child born in a New World English possession, but what happened to her remains unknown. The only clue as to their whereabouts were the letters "CRO" carved into a tree and the word "CROATOAN" carved into the fort's palisade. These enigmatic carvings and the strange disappearance of the Lost Colony at Roanoke would ensure that their fate would become one of the first and lasting mysteries of the English occupation in the New World. Today's guest is Rebekah Murray, founder of Virginia Dare Dress Co. I was really looking forward to this interview because I haven't interviewed a dress designer on the podcast before. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed. While we generally spend some time hearing about our guests' entrepreneurial journey, we spend nearly the entire episode about how Virginia Dress Co. came to be. It was fascinating to hear Rebekah's story and about all the different pieces that need to come together in clothing design. I should also mention that there is some construction going on at our neighbor's house, so I apologize if you hear a little of that in the background. But otherwise, I hope you enjoy Rebekah's story just as much as I did. For the show notes, go to https://daveyandkrista.com/btb-rebekah-murray-episode-80/

The Hulk battles dinosaurs in Colonial America. Need we say more?Affiliate link included.Transcript:Graham:Join us as we travel back in time to 1602 when Dinosaurs ruled North America. Well, at least in the Marvel 1602 universe. It's time for Marvel 1602: New World, straight ahead.Announcer:Welcome to the Classy Comics podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise Idaho, here is your host Adam Graham. Graham:Marvel 1602: New World is a sequel to the original Marvel 1602 graphic novel by Neil Gaiman. The plot of that story took Marvel heroes and had their beginnings set in the 17th century with characters like Matt Murdock, Nick Fury, Stephen Strange, Peter Parquagh, spelt in a very old English way, as well as the X-men, though in a different form. One of the plot threads of that book is that the first child born in North America Virginia Dare came to England along with a very white Native American known as Rojhaz in order to get aid for their colony from Queen Elizabeth but unfortunately by the time they arrived, Queen Elizabeth has died in King James is in charge. It turns out Rojhaz was actually Steve Rogers, i.e, Captain America from another universe who had been sent back in time and the Age of Heroes had started early. Nick Fury returns Rojhaz to the modern times and goes himself at the end of Marvel 1602. However, that left a lot of people in this new world at the colony of Roanoke, which unlike in our universe, was not lost and Virginia Dare's life not a mystery. She lived in 1602 and got powers of her own. David Banner is hiding out having failed to capture Fury, which is what King James wanted as the book starts and J. Jonah Jameson has started a broad sheet, the Daily Trumpet and he's using Banner's young servant, Parquagh, to help with the broad sheet and to employ him since Banner has disappeared. However, early on in the story, Banner actually makes a reappearance. He is lost and confused but the Hulk takes over when dinosaurs attacked the settlement and the Hulk is able to repel the invasion. However, this proves as an opportunity for Norman Osborne. Osborne wants to get rid of the local Indians because they're not willing to deal with him and he wants their lands for reasons that are revealed later on in the book but Rojhaz had actually preparing them for what white settlers might do and so they are very wise to his ways and really not interested in trading. However, the colonist, when they see that the Hulk, are really freaked out and so they decide to pass a law banning witchbreed. Now, witchbreed is a term in Marvel 1602 for those who have superpowers. It was applied to the X-Men in the previous book but, unlike in our universe, they are not as advanced as to make a distinction, like they do in the main Marvel 616 universe, between those who have superpowers through scientific means and can be totally cool and those who are mutants and are therefore dangerous and evil and must be destroyed. So, pretty much Banner, just like the X-men, falls into the category of witchbreed and is imprisoned. However, back in England, King James begins to wonder what happened to Banner. So, he sends someone to check into what's going on and the person he sends…he sends his man, Ross, who is commanding his military forces along with a Spaniard in a suit of iron armor known as Iron Lord. So, this is a 17th century electricity powered version of Iron Man with Tony Stark inside and they eventually, when the English arrive, they arrest the governor because they had set up their own form of government and slate him to be executed. The governor is Virginia Dare's dad and this actually leads to Peter Parquagh taking on the role of The Spider after making a homemade mask and Virginia Dare lends a hand too as in this world, she has a shape shifting abilities to turn herself into any animal.
The disappearance of the Roanoke colony is one of America's oldest mysteries. However, the story of the Roanoke colony was only a major pillar of American historiography after the 1830s, and later on in the 1800s Virginia Dare, the granddaughter […]
North Carolina’s Outer Banks offers everything from open-sea beaches, theatre, wildlife preserves and popular shipwreck diving sites to down home cooking and history. On today’s show we explore these barrier islands and put a spotlight on Thailand and Indonesia. The Outer Bank’s Roanoke Island was the site of the first English settlement in the New World. A local popular theatrical production called “The Lost Colony” celebrates the birth of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America. The Lost Colony is America’s longest running outdoor symphonic drama. We’re given a behind the scenes look at this epic drama that has drawn theatre goers every year since 1937. Before the farm-to-table and locally-source movement in food there was Owens Restaurant leading the way. An Outer Banks institution, Owens is North Carolina’s oldest family-owned restaurant having been owned and operated by the same family since 1946. During a visit, we met Clara “Peaches” Woodard, a member of the fourth generation of Owens restaurateurs. Peaches treated us to tastings of some popular family recipes while she shared the restaurant’s history and art collections. A 1937 Act of Congress established Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge as a place for wildlife and waterfowl conservation. Pea Island is located on the Outer Bank’s Hatteras Island and is surrounded by sand dunes, marshes, ponds and creeks. The Wildlife Refuge is home to migratory birds, sea turtles and more. We joined Cindy Heffley of the US Fish and Wildlife Service on a nature walk through the Refuge. Before the U.S. Coast Guard there was the U.S. Life-Saving Service protecting the shores. One of the most comprehensive Life-Saving station sites still in existence, the Chicamoacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site and Museum, is a unique living history attraction. The only one of its kind in North Carolina, this Outer Bank’s museum houses artifacts and teaches the history of the predecessor to today’s U.S. Coast Guard. The museum’s John Griffin shares some of the inspiring stories that made Chicamoacomico legendary.

The men shared the same great-great grandfather.Listen e-mail included: loss of HeritageQuest Online in the Satellite Beach, Florida, library; a thank you for our discussions of the Mozy (http://mozy.com/) computer backup facility; Catholic parish family books (Familienbuecher) in Germany; suggestions for locating information about Black Seminole people (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Seminoles and Seminole & Apalachicola Indian Records); a listener asks for help when his own DNA and that of his family members disagrees; teaching genealogy to and for kids; the occupation of "vanman" is defined; and the origins of the surname Turtle are discussed. [Drew referred to the book, A Dictionary of English Surnames: The Standard Guide to English Surnames by P.H. Reaney and R.M. Wilson, published by OxforndUniversity Press in 1995.]George discusses the practical use of DNA in conjunction with genealogy, archeology, and geography in the research of the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research (http://www.lost-colony.com/). The "Lost Colony" was the second settlement on Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks of what is now North Carolina. It began in 1587 and it was there that Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, was born on 18 August 1587. When the relief ships finally returned from England in 1590, the settlement was deserted, and a single word -- "Croaton" -- was carved into a post of the fort. Croaton was the name of one of the local Indian tribes. One suggestion is that the settlers were assimilated into one or more of the three tribes. The DNA testing and analysis being done by the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research is seeking to validate or refute this hypothesis, and the project is infinitely interesting.
