Parsha "Ki Tavo" (Deuteronomy (26:1-29:8) is almost certainly the most famous, and foreboding, set of blessings and cursings in the Bible. But, notably, it begins with "when you have come into the land," and a set of instructions, such as the 'Bikkurim' or offerings of First Fruits, that are to take place there. But we remain in exile, have been "shalach"-ed for cause. So what does that mean about those curses? But it begins with an observation: The plagues are certainly - undeniably - "well deserved," not just by the US, but the world. And many, at least, already seem to be in progress. Yet we are told, repeatedly, in Scripture, to "have no fellowship," with the unfruitful works of darkness. To "flee from idolatry." And not to 'keep company' with, or even eat with, the kind of people who commit the kind of perversions we routinely see promoted on CNN. Or taught in the public 'schools.' Mark argues that we have been told to "come out of her," to not participate with those sins, so as to - hopefully - avoid the promised plagues. The prophet Amos tells us that, unless they are agreed, it's difficult for two people to "walk together." And we saw this week there are, unquestionably, a large demonic army of people with whom reasoned dialogue, discourse, debate, and now arguably even peaceful coexistence have been demonstrated to be impossible. So, do those plagues in Deuteronomy 28 still apply? Or not? Isn't it relevant that the FIRST three plagues in Egypt hit everyone? But, during the fourth, of flies, YHVH "put a difference," made a distinction, between the pagan Egyptians and His people? The promised plagues are here, and we're already in exile. So what now? When you look in the mirror, what do you see? In our daily prayer and devotional, we consider that too often, our view of ourselves is clouded by shame, insecurity, and the critical voice in our own heads. We imagine God sees us the same way — through the lens of our failures and flaws. But Scripture tells us something very different. Through Jesus Christ, we are chosen, loved, redeemed, and clothed in righteousness. God doesn’t see us through condemnation but through the finished work of the cross. “We are Christians. [Persecution] can happen any time.” As the pastor of an illegal house church in China, “Brother Enfu” knows the truth of that statement. Listen as he shares why and how he prepares his wife and children for the day he may eventually be arrested and sent to prison. He will give an update on Christian persecution in China and how believers there are responding faithfully despite increasing government pressure. Enfu will explain how a new law prohibits foreigners in China from talking about their faith—even in private settings. He'll also share how the CCP's persecution strategy has changed, charging pastors and other church leaders with “fraud” or other financial crimes rather than using overtly religious criminal charges. “Christianity is the narrow way, and the government is warning people about it,” Enfu says. Instead of large church events, the gospel is spreading through one-on-one conversations with co-workers or neighbors as Christians share what Jesus has done in their lives. Brother Enfu encourages pastors and church leaders he trains to stay in China and serve Christians there, rather than leaving China for a more comfortable position in the West. He says that when he hears of a brother or sister imprisoned for their faith, it's an encouragement to him, even as he acknowledges the suffering they are enduring. Pastor Wang Yi is one of those Chinese pastors who stayed in China and stood firm in his faith. He is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence. Pasadena-based artist Linnéa Gabriella Spransy talks about: Growing up between Wisconsin and a commune in Oregon, the latter which she describes as a complete commitment more than an experiment (the town was Wildeville, Cape Junction being the closest city); how you radically live out the life of Christianity, including giving away all their stuff, and how her father played in a Christian glam rock band that toured the world; having a positive commune experience, yet winding up ‘inevitably becoming part of the machine,' aka capitalism, despite her wonderings as a child, which are still there; her period living and working in Kansas City for seven years after grad school at Yale, figuring out which voices to use in her work and make enough to have a house and a nice studio, and yet felt claustrophobic by its limitations and where she saw herself in the future if she had stayed there; her mantra in Kansas City, “if there's no pressure, I still do it,” in determining what work she would keep making no matter what; her intense experience at Yale, where everyone, even the future stars, received harsh criticism for a range of reasons; the big advantages of artists who are extroverted charmers, especially in comparison to the ‘ambiverts,' as Linnea calls them (and who we both essentially identify as), and even more so the more misanthropically aligned artists; her tenure co-founding Bridge Projects, a spiritually-oriented gallery in Hollywood, which had the misfortune of opening days before the pandemic. Jon in Canada, says that now is not the time to talk about the political stance of Charlie Kirk, people should not be saying he deserved to be shot, and we should be mourning him. As good humans, we can all condemn what happened, however, not everyone needs to grieve about it. One can care about the action and the outcome of the action, and at the same time be apathetic about the individual. If this is not the time to discuss the political stance of Charlie Kirk, when would be a better time to reflect on this? Is it cool to talk about his politics for people who agree with him, or does this rule only apply to those who oppose his views? What is the proposed solution for controversial figures being targets? How do we talk about politics without living in fear? Even when someone advocates for violence, nobody deserves what happened to Charlie Kirk. If you are a horrible person who is considering political violence, don't do it because you will be creating a martyr. Catholic Traditionalist in Paris asks the hosts to define god, tries to shift the burden of proof with a bit of snark, and states that if the hosts answer his questions, it will prove god exists. To make sure that we don't make false conclusions, we don't start with an assumption and work backwards. Instead of complaining and claiming repression, why don't you provide refutable proof that god exists? On today's program, Episode 184, this is Part 1 of a dialogue I had with Andre Roosma of the Netherlands, discussing the written language of Abraham, Moses, and David, often referred to as Paleo-Hebrew. We will be speaking about the pictographic roots and basic notions that underlie the earliest biblical script. Paleo-Hebrew developed from a script that was used in the West Semitic area, ranging from current Syria to Egypt to the Sinai desert, during the second millennium BCE. Many people today think of Christianity as a set of beliefs you take up, something you decide upon. But the Bible says Christianity is something that comes upon you. It's not something you pick up—it's something that picks you up. Jesus Christ is not a passive Savior. Jesus is not someone who sits back and waits for you to figure it out. He is a revealer.
