ADHD medications have been in the news a lot lately, especially stimulants. In this bonus episode of Hyperfocus, host and mental health journalist Rae Jacobson talks about two U.S. policy items that could affect people with ADHD.First, an executive order from February 13 established the “Make America Healthy Again Commission.” The executive order specifically mentions ADHD and the rise in diagnoses and medication usage among children. The order also requires the commission to “assess the prevalence of and threat posed by the prescription of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants, and weight-loss drugs.” Dr. Andy Kahn, a licensed psychologist, joins Rae to discuss the notion that people with ADHD, especially kids, are overmedicated. Plus, Rae discusses proposed regulatory changes for controlled substances, including ADHD stimulants. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) issued its proposal on January 17, before the current administration took office. If accepted, the proposed changes would affect telehealth prescriptions for ADHD stimulant medications. The DEA is accepting comments through March 18.Related resourcesAll about ADHD medicationFull text: White House executive orderRead the DEA's proposed telemedicine regulations What happens to my child's IEP if the U.S. Department of Education closes?Timestamps(0:38) What does the new executive order say about ADHD? (4:04) What does “overmedicated” mean today? (6:08) On stigma and ADHD(9:56) What is the new DEA telehealth proposal? For a transcript of this episode and more resources, visit the Hyperfocus episode page on Understood. We love hearing from our listeners. We're not at war with Communist China, but Communist China is at war with us. It's been waging a chemical war against our people for years. And it's winning.More than 100,000 Americans are dying from drug overdoses every year, and the real number is likely much higher than the one we get from the government. It also doesn't include lives saved from emergency doses of Narcan.Today, Sara welcomes Derek Maltz to discuss how this problem keeps getting worse and Joe Biden's open border makes this chemical warfare easier than ever for China to wage.Maltz served with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) for 28 years and also spent 10 years as the Special Agent in Charge of the Justice Department's Special Operations Division. No one advocates more fiercely or tirelessly for the families ripped apart by these poisons flooding our streets than Derek Maltz.Today, Sara and Maltz preview their Border 911 conference scheduled for Wednesday in Chicago, the dramatic influx of poisons even beyond fentanyl onto our streets and what communities around the nation must do to fight back effectively against this chemical warfare. In addition to fentanyl, Sara and Maltz explain how marijuana is produced with much higher levels of THC, leading to many cases of "marijuana psychosis". There's also fentanyl mixed with drugs like xylazine, which literally eats away at the flesh of addicts. Both Sara and Maltz have seen this first hand while working in Philadelphia. It's a war that impacts every community in this nation. And only one side is fighting it. Special Edition: Episode 36 Rolling Change: The DEA Turns Over a New Leaf on Marijuana Scheduling The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) triggered high hopes when it recently announced it wants to accept the U.S. Department Health and Human Services's recommendation to reschedule marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III. Josh Horn, Co-Chair and founder of our Cannabis Law Practice, joins host Matt Adams to explore this trailblazing announcement by the DEA. Their discussion digs into the business and banking ramifications for cannabis companies of the potential rescheduling. They also explore social justice issues for people formerly incarcerated for nonviolent crimes related to the possession and use of the marijuana. And they examine the parallels to Prohibition as well as consider the benefits rescheduling could have for medical research and municipal revenue generation.

Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves, a Psychedelic Venture Studio.Today, we're speaking with Matt Zorn.Matt is a partner at the law firm Yetter Coleman. His law practice is uniquely focused on regulatory law, and importantly for this conversation, he has been working on several psychedelic-related cases.I should warn you we get into the weeds straight out of the gates on this one as I ask Matt about his experience deposing the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)—and what that actually means. This is probably the most technical conversation we've had on the podcast, and so you'll hear me ask Matt to clarify or explain things several times.I would ask listeners to keep in mind while listening to this that the matter of illegality of psychedelics and the punishment mandated by the law was not established through science, public health, or respect for individual liberties– but rather, this state of affairs was established to consolidate political power. The Controlled Substances Act, established in 1970—more than 50 years ago—created the DEA and established formidable barriers to revising the government's position on psychedelics and other scheduled substances.Matt, along with a handful of other attorneys working in the field, are holding the DEA's feet to the flame, so to speak, and forcing the agency to clarify its position on several fronts and through this process—and this is my personal opinion— exposing that the emperor, in fact, is wearing no clothes. We discuss one specific area in which Matt and his colleagues are pushing the DEA for clarity; this is a trial AIMS vs the DEA where defendants are seeking clarity on the matter of whether psilocybin is eligible for terminally ill patients through The Right to Try Act.We also dive into:* Cannabis rescheduling* The Freedom of Information Act* How the FDA came to be the other federal agency involved in the drug classification schema and the concept of “Medically Accepted Use”* The legal concept of the Chevron Deference and* The differences between state-level legalization and decriminalization And, without further ado, I bring you my conversation with Matt Zorn.Listen to the episode on Substack, Spotify, Google or Apple.Credits:* Hosted by Zach Haigney * Produced by Zach Haigney, Erin Greenhouse, and Katelin Jabbari* Find us at thetripreport.com* Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube* Theme music by MANCHO Sounds, Mixed and Mastered by Rollin Weary This is a public episode. Bulger had served as an informant for the FBI for several years. His FBI agent handler, John Connelly, was charged and convicted for revealing to Bulger that he was about to be indicted for RICO by the Massachusetts State Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Federal prosecutors later filed a superseding indictment and, in addition to the initial racketeering charges, tried and convicted Bulger for nineteen murders. Torsney and MacDonald gathered the evidence that finally led to the dramatic capture of Bulger and Greig by agent Scott Garriola in the LA Division. Phil Torsney served in the FBI for over 29 years. Community Engagement & the Prevention of Drug Misuse with Proper Medication DisposalDid you know that proper disposal of medications varies based on the medication? Do you know the estimated cost per year for proper drug disposal? Where can you take medications to be disposed of properly? Join me for a conversation with Dr. Tyler Melton, PharmD to uncover these answers and more. We discuss how opioids in the treatment of pain are the largest category of misuse and are usually stored and disposed of improperly, as well. There has been an increase in opioid overdose deaths since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Improper storage increase the risk of misuse and improper disposal of medications can affect the environment. We discuss the implications of drug diversion for populations like the elderly and adolescents. Learn where citizens can take unused medications back for disposal and how the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) emphasizes community take-back events twice per year, in April and October. More about Dr. Melton:Tyler Melton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Translational Science at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), College of Pharmacy. He has ten years of pharmacy practice experience including inpatient and outpatient pharmacy in rural environments. Tyler joined UTHSC in September of 2020, after completing a postdoctoral research fellowship in Community Pharmacy Practice and Prescription Drug Abuse and earning his Master of Public Health from East Tennessee State University. Mike Ortoll's world was turned upside down when his daughter Christine started abusing drugs and alcohol. Christine found recovery for several years, but sadly suffered a relapse and passed away from a fentanyl overdose in late 2020. In grieving his daughter, Mike started to think about how he could share his experience with other families facing addiction. Through a series of high-profile documentary films, including the Bowden Dynasty Film and another film documenting Christine's story, Mike and a few of his Sigma Chi Fraternity Brothers are now providing support to the Collegiate Recovery Program at Florida State University (FSU), called LIFT. Mike also started the Christine Ortoll Recovery Organization to raise awareness, share resources, and lead a national “call to action” across the country of changing the conversation about addiction and recovery. The CDC has reported that more than 100,000 Americans died of a drug overdose in a 12 month period from 2020 to 2021, and many of those deaths have been attributed to Fentanyl. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 80-100 times stronger than morphine. Fentanyl is often times added to heroin to increase its potency, or to be disguised as highly potent heroin. Many users believe they are purchasing heroin and don't know that they are actually purchasing fentanyl – which often results in overdose deaths.Christine Ortoll Recovery OrganizationAssociation of Recovery in Higher EducationLIFT at Florida State University (FSU)Center for Health Advocacy Wellness at FSUSubstance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)www.tpoftampa.comwww.thepointisrecoverypodcast.comwww.facebook.com/TurningPointofTampawww.twitter.com/TurningPointTPAwww.instagram.com/turningpointtpawww.youtube.com/user/TurningPointofTampawww.linkedin.com/company/turning-point-of-tampa-inc

But the problem is much bigger than that.   According to the U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 20 million American adults battled a full-fledged substance use disorder in 2017.   Drug abuse and addiction cost American society more than $740 billion annually in lost workplace productivity, healthcare expenses, and crime-related costs.   Globally, the numbers escalate even further off the charts.   It is a war of amazing proportions, with many different battle fronts, some of which we are winning, some not so much, but it is one that is always changing and that we need to stay ahead of.   That’s why I’m so honored to be joined by our guest today, a gentleman whose career is something that it would take several movies and a few mini-series to appropriately encapsulate.   Mr. Daniel Addario spent close to 3 decades with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), rising to the role of Special Agent in Charge, the highest-ranking field agent for the DEA under five presidents, heading up anti-drug operations in 13 countries throughout South American, South East Asia, as well as in the U.S.   He started his career in Philadelphia as one of the nation’s first narcotics undercover agents in 1954 and was involved in the capture of some of the world’s most notorious drug lords, and was even on scene when Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega was captured by US forces.   His dossier of adventures consists of, but is not limited to:   A cultivation of the U.S. strategic relationship with the Panamanian leader, Manuel Noriega, who at the time, was head of police in Panama and fighting the war on drugs with the U.S. The chase and capture Auguste Joseph Ricord, the French-Corsican heroin trafficker and one of the founding members of the French Connection, immortalized in the 1970s Gene Hackman movie. Visiting the center of the “Golden Triangle” opium empire of Burmese opium king Khun Sa to discuss poppy crop eradication and substitution. The major drug bust, round up and arrest of dozens of Hell’s Angels, including their head Sonny Barger. The destruction of a dozen of drug guru Timothy Leary’s LSD labs. The drug arrest Ray Charles. Intermingling with special counsel Robert Mueller, Frank Sinatra, and Watergate figures including John Dean and Gordon Liddy.   Sadly, in 1993 the very scourge he was battling came home and was responsible for taking the life of his son Daniel due to opiate addiction.   After he retired from the DEA, Mr. Addario spent some time in the news business working for a San Francisco news station.   He has recently published a book entitled Chasing the Dragon: How to Win the War on Drugs where is recounts his long history and experience as well as puts forth a range of new ideas as the drug war continues in this millennium.   On this show we will hear from Dan:   About his background, where he grew up, how he became interested in law enforcement, and his amazing path from his first undercover street assignment to being at the epicenter of the capture of drug kingpins, warlords, and dictators. His thoughts on the legalization and decriminalization of marijuana. His thoughts on holding doctors and big pharma accountable for the opioid epidemic. His thoughts on crop substitution programs. Learn more about the candidates running for office in your community at www.Vote-USA.org! Transcription School shootings are on the rise in the U.S. The Washington Post counts 237 school shootings since the Columbine shooting in 1999. In Washington state, there have only been three school shootings according to the K-12 School Shooting Database: Frontier Middle School in 1996, Marysville Pilchuck High School in 2014, and Freeman High School in 2017. Of the three, the Marysville Pilchuck High School shooting was the only one in the Seattle Metropolitan Area. In this incident 5 were killed and one was injured. In one Seattle Times article called “What we know about school mass shootings since Columbine and how to prevent them”, the author argues that focusing on fostering an inclusive school climate would be one of the most productive actions to take to reduce school shootings. It will be up to the local and state governments to determine the best path forward. Another issue they will have to take up is salary increases for civil servants. Seattle is one of the most expensive cities in which to live in the country. The wages paid to city’s civil servants often leaves them unable to afford the costs of the city. The National Low Income Housing Coalition cites that the minimum salary needed to afford a studio apartment is $56,640. The starting salary for Seattle public school teachers is only $56,947 as of October 2018, leaving them barely able to afford to live in the city in the smallest living space possible. Prior to October, many would not have been able to afford it at all, since all teachers received a 10% salary increase. The starting salary for firefighters of $72,900 and for police officers of $81,444 is not enough for them to afford larger than a two bedroom apartment. These civil servants are so crucial to the city but can not afford to live here, which is why some are arguing for wage increases. Seattle along with cities across the whole country have been deeply affected by the opioid crisis as well. In 2016, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reported 179 deaths in Seattle due to drug related incidents, of which 123 were caused by opioids. The DEA Seattle Field Division anticipates that deaths will only continue to rise in the area due to opiate addiction. The opioid crisis touches every part of Seattle from stressing police resources, causing increased lawlessness, and disrupting communities. Seattle as well as Washington state as a whole has taken a multi-pronged approach to combating the opioid crisis...(Transcription edited, only 4000 characters allowed)

Boeing failed to train pilots on dangerous flight control feature that led to crash in Indonesia Safety experts and midlevel Federal Aviation Administration investigators have  found that Boeing never trained pilots on a dangerous flight control feature that can unexpectedly push down the nose of a Boeing 737. That’s the model that crashed in in Indonesia last month, killing all 189 people on board. The New York Times notes that the plane crashed into the ocean at 400 miles per hour within seconds—a force so strong that it reduced some of the plane’s metal fittings to powder.  The safety feature was apparently intended to prevent the plane from stalling if the nose goes up too high. But it can force the plane down unexpectedly, which can cause pilots to lose control, according to report. FBI and Homeland: No significant foreign influence on midterms Both the FBI and Department of Homeland security concluded that there were no significant efforts by foreign agents to breach the U.S. midterm elections. At a press briefing, DHS Secretary Kirstjen Neilsen said that the main concern was disinformation on social media, but that there was no evidence of breaches into election machines. DEA special agent says heroin, synthetic opioids a “main focus” for agency.  2. Investigators “looking at” upstate physicians for possible over prescribing.  3.DEA announces enhanced focus on Great Plains amid state's largest-ever fentanyl bust. Host Alpha Mike dedicates the show to the memory of Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarena Salazar. In response to America’s growing drug problem, Congress passed the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, Thus the foundation of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Creation of the DEA (July 1, 1973) President Richard Nixon declared “an all-out global war on the drug menace” and sent Reorganization Plan No. 2 to Congress. “Right now,” he pointed out, “the federal government is fighting the war on drug abuse under a distinct handicap, for its efforts are those of a loosely confederated alliance facing a resourceful, elusive, worldwide enemy. Certainly, the cold-blooded underworld networks that funnel narcotics from suppliers all over the world are no respecters of the bureaucratic dividing lines that now complicate our anti-drug efforts.” The Collapse of the DEA Miami Office Building (1974) The DEA was still a new agency when tragedy struck the Miami Field Division. On Aug. 5, 1974, at 10:24 a.m., the roof of the Miami office came crashing down, killing seven and trapping others in a pile of twisted steel and concrete. Between 125 and 150 people worked in the building.   Training:The National Training Institute, the DEA’s first training program, was located at DEA headquarters, 1405 “Eye” Street in Washington, D.C. At that time, training was divided into three major divisions: special agent training, police training, and international training. Training was carried out in a three-story bank building adjacent to DEA headquarters that had been converted for training purposes. The building had a gymnasium located on the first floor, lockers and showers in the basement, and a 5-point firing range on the second floor. Special agent trainees were housed in hotels within walking distance of DEA headquarters.   Afghanistan Five Pillar Plan(2004) On Nov. 17, 2004, DEA joined with coalition partners, the State Department, and the Department of Defense in announcing its involvement in the U.S. Embassy Kabul Counternarcotics Implementation Plan. This represented an expansion of the DEA-led 19-country Operation Containment multilateral strategy begun in 2002 to choke off the flow of drugs and precursor chemicals into and out of Afghanistan before they can spread to broader markets.   “Chapo” GuzmanReward (2004) On Dec. 20, 2004, DEA announced up to a $5 million reward through the State Department’s Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of Joaquin Guzman-Loera, a.k.a. “Chapo” Guzman.   Bolivia   Sonia Sanjinez De Atala   Colombia Pablo Escobar  José Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha Cali Cartel Norte del Valle Cartel (1990−2012) North Coast Cartel (1999−2004) John Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, aka ‘Popeye’ Pablo Escobar Hitman YouTube Channel  Mexico Amado Carrillo Fuentes "The Lord Of The Sky's".
