Description: Joining the show today is Jane Fisher, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Harper Wilde, on a mission to take the B.S. out of bra shopping. In this episode, Jane shares with us her journey from growing up in Florida, working as a hostess at a tourist restaurant, to studying business, to earning her MBA at Wharton where she came up with the idea for Harper Wilde. She talks about the challenges she's faced fundraising from investors, how she had to change her pitch, how to land on a good price point, and why she hires for culture fit first. In This Episode You'll Hear About:(3:12) More about Harper Wilde, founded by Jane Fisher and Jenna Kerner's frustrations with the overpriced hypersexualized intimate apparel industry, inspiring them to launch Harper Wilde to change the conversation and create everyday bras that are ethically made, reasonably priced, and comfortable.(4:40) What it was like growing up in Florida on a small island, with thoughts of becoming a vet, to getting a Psychology degree, to ending up in business(12:06) How she ended up in the business department at McKinsey, without a lot of business background(15:19) How she went to business school at Wharton and began to fall in love with the DTC world, and how she got the idea for Harper Wilde(18:00) Some of the first things she did to validate the idea, why she chose to try and disprove it, and realizing she couldn't(21:00) How they decided on the price point, and finding the sweet spot, and validating it with consumers, and if they could build the business with it(25:00) Why it's important for them to listen to customer feedback, and why they strive to build a brand that speaks to the whole market(29:50) The go-to-market strategy, how they pitched their products, and the metrics they were looking for to see how they were growing(31:50) What it was like fundraising from mostly male investors for a DTC bra company (37:40) How hiring has been, why they focus on culture fit first, and how to filter for culture(42:00) How she's grown into being a leader and why learning and innovating is important, and the biggest challenges she's had to face in building a business(46:00) The challenges in fundraising, learning how to be bold in confidence, and how to handle and work with investors(1:01:00) The final advice she has for those looking to dive into entrepreneurshipTo Find Out More:https://harperwilde.com/Quotes:“We're living in a world where it's cool to buy razor blades online, but I'm sitting here not replacing my bra after a decade.”“I just got curious and started poking around and learning more about the industry to understand why there wasn't a broad company out there yet doing this.”“We look at the customer and we've built a brand at a price point that speaks to the whole market.”“Each new addition makes a huge difference to the culture, hopefully in a good way”“We have three values: hunger, humility, and an ownership mindset.”“Your gut is so often right if something feels off, it almost always is.”“It's so much harder to let someone go and find someone new than it is to just wait a little longer and find the right.”“At the end of the day, it's humans who are doing these jobs, and it's about the relationships with those people who are helping create the brand.”“Investors should be selling you on why they should invest in you.”“Be bold in confidence.”“When someone says something can't be done or shouldn't be done, weigh it against your gut and what you know and are learning. Sometimes there's a lot to learn from that on why they're saying no. Oftentimes there is, but that doesn't necessarily mean it should stop you in your tracks and you should move forward.”
To say ecommerce has boomed would be an understatement. Global online sales are predicted to total $5.4 trillion in 2022. Consumers in the US alone will take a $1 trillion stake. To get a slice of the action, brands pivoted their marketing campaigns to focus heavily on the online channels customers were flocking to instead of brick-and-mortar stores. The result? Sky-high customer acquisition and paid marketing costs. Ecommerce brands in the US will be spending $200 billion to compete for customer attention—something already known to be dwindling. The current state of ecommerce is forcing brands to think about other ways to attract new customers and retain loyal ones. They need to drive down ever-increasing advertising costs and focus on relationships with their customers. All of this is done through brand building. The goal is to be a customers' first port of call when they need the product you sell— not catching them by chance through a paid advert. This guide shares how to bolster your ecommerce brand as we head into 2022 and beyond. We'll share the changes you need to be aware of and how to prepare for them, complete with examples of brands that have invested heavily in brand marketing—a strategy that paid off. Table of Contents What is brand building in 2022? Old vs. new brand marketing strategies Brand marketing statistics Brand building strategies and best practices in 2022 Brand marketing: a case study Brand building in 2022 and beyond What is brand building in 2022? Brand building is the strategy behind building recognition between your products and your customers. It includes everything from the visual identity (consistent brand logos, fonts, typography, and color palettes) for your business through to the values, brand mission statements, and people you want to help. Strong direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands have become the default merchants for customers who align with their core values when searching for new products. Sustainable sneakers that help the planet? Allbirds ticks the box. Comfortable bras for modern women? Harper Wilde is top of mind. This brand recognition makes the entire marketing funnel more effective. It's easier to influence a purchase—even at higher prices—with someone who knows your brand and what you stand for. If you brand yourself correctly, and your product plus customer service align perfectly with this brand, customers will develop a preference for your company and its products. Moreover, branding helps define what your customers can expect from the company. Meeting these expectations is what leads to the establishment of trust and loyalty between you and your customers.” Patrick Crane, CEO of Love Sew Old vs. new brand marketing strategies For many ecommerce merchants, brand building fell on the backburner. It was something that came as an indirect consequence of traditional performance marketing. You got brand awareness by spending thousands on advertising, right? The traditional marketing landscape is changing rapidly. Paid advertising is a lifeline for many ecommerce brands. Granted, it might be more expensive to run these campaigns than to invest in brand building, but for many merchants, it's the fuel that gets the customer acquisition engine running. The oversaturation of advertising slots—particularly on social media—means your customer acquisition costs might be feasible for a few months. Expect it to take a greater stake of your profit margins by this time next year, when new brands are competing against you for those already limited placements. Some brands are seeing ad costs go five times higher than [before] to drive the same amount of traffic.” —Ben Jabbawy, founder and CEO, Privy If that wasn't scary enough, consider the looming death of the cookie. Limitations on the data marketers can collect mean 28% of global technology decision makers expect changes to customer data and privacy regulations to hinder their 2022 growth goals (1). As we head into next year, combat these ch...
According to co-founders and co-CEOs Jenna Kerner and Jane Fisher, Harper Wilde, the intimates brand they launched in 2017, would not be nearly as successful as it is if it weren't for the community they built early on. Kerner and Fisher launched the DTC bra brand after previously working together on a completely different brand following business school. Though the two had very little experience in the retail space, they knew there was an opportunity for a millennial intimates brand to launch and disrupt the industry. Fast forward to 2022, and Harper Wilde has not only managed to foster a thriving community, but it has also differentiated itself in a crowded market — a feat not many brands are able to tout. To date, it's leveraged through crowdsourcing and has created a high-quality product made of well-researched raw materials — and Harper Wilde has bigger milestones ahead. For example, the company is hoping to expand into new categories later this year. Currently, Harper Wilde's online site is its primary shopping channel, but it also sells at Nordstrom in a few stores and online. “Our North Star has always been to be the next market leader in intimates. There's so much opportunity for us to continue to provide more silhouettes, more products and more sizes,” Kerner said on the latest episode of the Glossy Podcast. “[Our customer] is asking us for more than just bras and underwear. … Now that we have her size for the most difficult garments to make, there are a lot of opportunities for us to understand how we can make other garments that fit her incredibly well and are super soft.”

Today we're learning from Jane, the founder of Harper Wilde. Founded in 2017, Harper Wilde is a direct-to-consumer, ‘underthings' brand for women. Frustrated with the over-priced, hyper sexualised intimate apparel industry, Wharton graduates and co-founders Jane Fisher and Jenna Kerner set out to change the conversation by building everyday bras that are ethically made, fairly priced, and comfortable. Beyond the products themselves, Harper Wilde is focused on a larger mission to support and empower future generations of independent women through cause-related and philanthropic initiatives, including a 1% donation of all proceeds to Girl's Inc. This commitment extends to the company's environmental responsibilities, with the industry's only-of-its-kind bra recycling program, “Recycles, Bra”, which to-date has saved over 30,000 bras from landfills.LINKS WE MENTION: Harper Wilde's InstagramIf you have something you want me to cover, reach out on Twitter or Instagram.Female Startup Club's YouTubeFemale Startup Club's InstagramDoone's InstagramIn partnership with Klaviyo, the best email marketing tool for ecommerce businesses.Female Startup Club's YouTubeFemale Startup Club's Private Facebook GroupSay hello to Doone: hello@femalestartupclub.com

In the early morning of September 5th, 1982, 12-year-old Johnny Gosch set out for his morning paper route in West Des Moines, Iowa. Typically, Johnny's father woke up early to help him with delivering the papers. Recently, Johnny had been begging his parents to let him complete the route on his own. His parents told him that he couldn't. However that Sunday morning, he didn't wake up his father and left to collect his newspapers. Other paperboys saw Johnny speaking to a man in a car and then continuing on his way. Several witnesses reported seeing the car again and a man walking out from between two houses to follow Johnny. Later that morning, neighbors began calling Johnny's parents to ask why their paper hadn't been delivered. Johnny's dad went to look for his son and found his abandoned wagon and his little dog that he'd taken with him. Johnny was nowhere to be found. 39-years-later, there still has not been a proper investigation into his disappearance and he has never been located. Was Johnny simply a runaway or was he abducted and forced into the world of child trafficking? Want access to our first 45 episodes? Grab em here! Carl "Charlie" Brandt seemed to have a normal upbringing when one night he just snapped. Charlie shot and killed his pregnant mother and unborn sibling, wounded his father, then turned the gun to his sister Angela. Luckily, the gun was empty and Angela Brandt was able to escape to a neighbors and call for help, but this would not be the end of Charlie's killing. This week, Savannah details the horrific slayings by serial killer Charlie Brandt and the dark family secret of his killings that were kept from everyone, even Charlie's younger siblings. Charlie didn't serve prison time for killing his mother, and he went on to kill, disembowel and decapitate at least 4 more women in his adulthood before ultimately ending his own life. Sadie Hartley was a hardworking & successful businesswoman who began dating a man named Ian Johnston. Little did Sadie know that simply by being with Ian, that would cause a ripple effect that would lead to her murder. Savannah explores the tragic backstory of one of Sadie's murderers Sarah Williams, Sarah's torrid affair with Ian, and how Sarah and her accomplice Katrina Walsh planned Sadie's murder for nearly 2 years before brutally attacking and killing her in her own home. Sarah and Katrina are currently serving lengthy sentences in prison, while Ian has been cleared of any involvement, despite several people, including Sadie's family, suspect he is not as innocent as he seems. Teri was stalked by the ex-wife of her fiancé. After Teri began dating her now-fiancé, his ex-wife began targeting her with a series of vulgar and abusive Facebook messages. She told her that everyone hates her, that she is "temporary," and after Teri blocked her, she used her son's social media accounts to harass her. Her stalking escalated and she accosted Teri at one of her child's school functions. After she showed up at Teri's house yelling and banging on her door Teri filed a Harassment Restraining Order stating she is no longer to contact her indirectly or directly. Her stalker then tried to get a retaliatory HRO against Teri who is now in the midst of a battle against false accusations from her stalker. Check Out Our Patreon:? www.patreon.com/strictlystalking?? Part 2 of 2. On July 1st, 1981, workers for a moving company heard noises coming from the house next to the one they were working at and saw a few men running from the house. When they went to investigate, they stumbled upon one of the most gruesome crime scenes that L.A. County has ever seen. Inside the home, the police found 4 bodies, beaten almost beyond recognition, and a 5th person, barely clinging to life despite her severe injuries. The Wonderland Gang, as they were known, had been attacked during the night as payback for their actions against nightclub owner Eddie Nash only days before. **The following episode of Strictly Stalking contains topics including sexual abuse of a minor, child pornography, and suicide. Listener discretion is advised.** Shannon was fifteen years old when she met her stalker. After being diagnosed with a rare eye disease rendering her legally blind, Shannon began dating an older guy, who grew jealous of her friends and started isolating her. Once she discovered his obsession with porn, he started following her around with a camera encouraging her to perform...while secretly taping their sexual activities. Shannon broke up with him and he began showing up at her job, attempted to break into her house, and sent out the sexually explicit pictures and videos of her that he had secretly captured while she was underage. The police issued a warrant to gain access to his computer, exposing the dark truth before this story was brought to a violent end. Check Out Our Patreon: ?www.patreon.com/strictlystalking?? Jessica and her family started experiencing unexplained occurrences around her home: knocking on windows in the middle of the night, random objects left in their backyard, and their dogs being let out of the gate. She discovered an older man from her neighborhood was responsible for this bizarre behavior. Jessica turned to law enforcement officials but most were dismissive; some even defended her stalker. She was eventually granted a trespass warning against her stalker-which only intensified his behavior. After a court hearing a judge awarded her a stalking injunction, but Jessica and her family continued to live in fear. As a result of her experience, Jessica began working on her Doctorate, researching the brain's reaction to trauma, in particular PTSD and CPTSD. Her next mission is to develop training for law enforcement on how they can better address the crime of stalking and the impact of that trauma. **The following episode of Strictly Stalking contains topics including abortion and domestic abuse. Listener discretion is advised.** At eighteen, Rebecca began secretly dating her uncle's best friend who was fourteen years older. He became possessive and controlling, limiting her time with family and friends, monitoring her activity on social media, and looking through her phone. When he learned she was pregnant with his child...he attempted to run her over with her own car. After multiple attempts, Rebecca was granted a restraining order which only intensified his rage. He stood outside her apartment complex blowing her kisses and motioning like he had a gun, sent strangers to harass her on the street, and left a note on her windshield saying she had to contact him or her car would blow up. After he called her job close to 100 times a day, broke her car windows and flattened her tires... she turned to the police and was told that all they could do was file a police report. In this episode, we interview Jenna Kerner cofounder of Harper Wilde a bra brand that "takes the B.S. out of bra shopping" with benefits like free home try-ons. Harper Wilde was born online in 2017, the brainchild of Jenna Kerner and Jane Fisher, two friends from business school. Harper Wilde Co-Founders Jenna Kerner and Jane Fisher knew that there would be a risk embroidering a statement on their bras that included profanity. They didn't know if anyone had ever done this before. However, in 2019 when 9 states passed laws severely restricting a woman's right and access to a legal procedure, they knew they had to act. They decided that their brand message had to mirror their company values, even if their stance would be controversial. In part 2 of this fascinating episode, Jenna and Jane share What happened when they took a risk and took a stand, How they want to be about empowering woman externally and internally, Why standing up for their values is part of their Brand Moat, Why making the most comfortable and softest bra in the market is key to that Brand MOAT. Plus they share more advice for college graduates, advice for women (and men) when raising funds, Why their recycling program for Bras is important to the environment, How they are launching a nursing bra, and why humor and pranks are important for company's culture. Join us while Ramon Vela interviews Jenna & Jane in Part 1 of this episode and hear them share the inside story of a brand. Harper Wilde Co-Founders Jenna Kerner and Jane Fisher didn't start out wanting to build a brand much less one that disrupted the bra market. They even spent most of their time, trying to disprove their business idea. However, the more they researched, the more they realized that it wasn't so much about the bras, it was more about empowering women of all sizes, skin tones and giving her a quality & affordable product and experience she deserved. So in the end, it was such a huge problem with a big opportunity in the market that they had to start the business. In part 1 of this incredible episode, Jenna and Jane share their journey including Why women hate bra shopping, What they learned about the process of making & pricing bras, Why large manufacturers and retailers weren't looking to solve the problem, Why Victoria Secrets no longer speaks to the woman of today, Why it's important to have outside advisors, How they started with negative money (they were in grad school) and how they raised funds, What the rule of 10% is and why it was so crucial to their success, How they handle being Co-Founders and why it works for them, What mistakes they made, Why you should listen to your gut, and Advice to Graduates: Just put something out there! and much more. Note: there is so much great advice, we can't list it all. So join us while Ramon Vela interviews Jenna & Jane in Part 1 of this episode and hear them share the inside story of a brand. All right, men: imagine that every time you wanted to buy a pair of boxers, you had to spend three hours searching through hundreds of options and pay $50 or even $70? This is the hook that finally got investors—93% of whom are men—to pay attention to Harper Wilde, a company which, as founder Jane Fisher says, “takes the BS out of bra shopping.” She explains that she and her cofounder, Jenna Kerner, “decided to build a company that would make it easier to buy more fairly priced bras, everyday bras, online, without the hassle.” They offer home try-on of three bras, and they sell just a few great options, all priced at $35, “which is about half of what you would find at a similar quality product at other retailers.” Listen to hear Karl talk with Jenna and Jane about the perils of pitching to (male) investors, how to test a home try on method using no tech (and spending virtually no money), and pinpointing the actual pain point of bra shopping.
