“When you compete at that level, there's this high that comes with that. And I've missed that. And nothing has replaced it, really… And I got little bit of that feeling calling some of those races. I started to feel that little high again that I used to get when I raced.” Last month, Kara Goucher joined the Ali on the Run Show to talk about her experience being part of the NBC broadcast team at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene, OR. Today, Kara's back — and this time, she's here to talk about what it was like commentating at the Tokyo Olympic Games! Kara just returned from Tokyo, where she served as an NBC Olympics Distance Analyst, calling the men's and women's races from the 1500m up to the marathon. She talks about how this experience compared to the Trials, and breaks down her studying process for each race, including what she did to make sure she pronounced every name of every athlete correctly. She shares the one thing she said on air that kept her up at night, reflects on getting choked up when Molly Seidel went for the bronze in the marathon, and explains why she wasn't allowed to cry on air. She talks about having to keep it together when one of her closest friends, Emma Coburn, was having a tough race in the steeplechase final, and talks about what it was like calling the men's marathon after having a complicated history with former teammate and Team USA competitor Galen Rupp. Finally, Kara, a two-time Olympian herself, answers listener questions about her time in Tokyo and what's next. “This was the most fun I've had in so long.” If you watched any of this year's Olympic Track & Field Trials coverage, you would have heard a familiar voice calling the distance races: Kara Goucher! Kara served as commentator and member of the NBC broadcast team at Hayward Field, and today, she's here to tell all. On this episode, Kara talks about how she got the job (she will also be part of the NBC broadcast team during the Olympic Games in Tokyo later this month), how she prepared for the races, and what it was like calling all the action. She reflects on the highlights and heartbreaks from the Trials, talks about making mistakes live on air and how she handled them, and about getting the call that her husband, Adam, had gotten into a car accident right before she was about to go live. As always, Kara is open and honest, and promised nothing was off-limits during this conversation — so yes, she talks about having to wear Nike-branded apparel on air, and whether that swoosh-covering braid was intentional. Kara and I met and worked together for a hot minute at AOL, where she was part of the sales executive team that took the company from zero to billions of dollars in sales. After leaving the company and taking some time off for herself, Kara went on a very personal journey that she chronicles in her book, Undaunted: Overcoming Doubts and Doubters. Kara joins me today to define what it means to be undaunted and explains why she calls herself an “accidental” entrepreneur. She shares the challenges she faced and lessons she learned in starting and expanding the Hint Water brand. She explains what the “try” mindset is and illustrates how it can help you navigate life’s unknowns. She also discusses how her experiences in previous companies she’s worked for informed how she created Hint’s company culture and underscores the power of a purpose-driven mission. “The key thing in life is figuring out what you want to get up and do. These brands in particular have certain considerations that you’ll need to work with, like capital, supply chain, stockouts, and even shelf-life. But, most importantly, you’ll need something that can’t be outsourced or researched: you have to be undaunted. On this episode of the Micromobility Podcast, we publish an episode from the recent Micromobility Membership call where we had Axios Reporter Felix Salmon interview Kara Swisher, Editor at Recode about her pledge to go car-free for a year, and her thoughts about the development of the micromobility space. It’s a great discussion.Specifically, they dig into:- Her choice to get rid of a car, and how that’s gone over the last year. - The challenges of using Micromobility with a young child, and what options she’s considering- ‘I like to write about directional stuff and I think car ownership is over eventually.’ And how she thinks about autonomy and micromobility in that context.- The inevitability of new urban transport modes as cities evolve and grow. - Why e-bikes are attractive in the suburbs. - In the discussion about COVID-induced changes to urban design how much does it happen at a local level vs. state vs. national?- The technology of security for bikes and other micromobility vehicles. - How Kara thinks about the rebound of transit and car use, and how it’ll accelerate trends that were already happening. - Why Uber and Lyft enable the convenience of a car without the headache. - How the modularity of Micromobility competes against the incumbent car manufacturers. - Urban form in the majority of the US isn’t like SF, NYC or DC, which were all designed pre-car. Where is the capitalist incentive to reengineer the the majority of the US (and world’s) cities away from the car? - Why Kara thinks cars aren’t actually as sticky as everything thinks they are. - How do cities work with micromobility operators and whether Kara thinks that cities will end up subsidising them.- Why Kara would start with a network of tunnels if she started to rebuild a city from scratch. - Why Kara doesn’t think that the speed of streetscape adaptation is actually that slow. - A discussion with Horace about the nature of software in both micromobility and automotive vehicles. - A discussion about universal basic mobility, and why Kara is for it. - Why Kara is pro congestion pricing.Transcript of the call is available here: https://micromobility.io/blog/2020/5/3/kara-swisher-felix-salmon-end-of-car-ownership If you like this discussion, you can get regular access to this by signing up to TripleM here. Black women and money are not often spoken of in the same sentence. There are so many negative mindsets or pieces of emotional baggage that we black women carry surrounding money that have to be changed. Thankfully, we have some sisters who have been down that road ahead of us and are willing to help. Kara Stevens is one of those women. She's done the hard work of changing her own mindset to facilitate a different way of dealing with and earning money. In this conversation, Rosetta and Kara talk about the baggage and mindsets that hold Black Women back and chart a way forward. You’ll want to hear this one. The emotional hurdles surrounding money have got to be overcome. Too many times we black women are living our lives according to beliefs and emotional baggage that no longer apply. Kara Stevens shares how as a child her dominant belief about men and money was that men cannot be trusted with money. She had to do a lot of self-examination and personal work to overcome the negative beliefs she had around money and realized on her path to healing that she was learning things that many of her sisters needed to know. It wasn’t long before she was beginning to speak about what she was learning and in time it created a business that empowers black women to think and live differently in relationship to money. You can find out how Kara has walked that path and has come to such a healthy place, on this episode. It’s a form of self-love to ask for a reasonable payment for your services. One of the things Kara had to realize as she began examining her beliefs and practices surrounding money was that she was scared to ask for a significant payment for the services she was providing people. But a revelation that changed her entire approach to the topic was that it is actually a form of self-love to ask for reasonable payment for your services. It’s not greedy. It’s not unkind. It’s right for you and right for those you are serving. And ultimately it enables you to provide for yourself and your family as you should. Kara shares many insights like this during this conversation with Rosetta so take the time to listen. Saving money is great. But you need to switch to thinking about earning more money. Every financial planner or coach advises that you set up a way to consistently save money. That’s great. Kara Stevens, Rosetta's guest on this episode does as well. But she also points out that at some point you need to get past the fundamental principle of saving money and begin to move toward the possibility of making more money. There are two ways to approach meeting your needs, and making more money is surely the more fun and liberating way of the two. Kara gives some great advice about how you can get your mind around the idea and what you can do to begin moving in that direction, on this episode. If you can’t find the money to invest in yourself, nobody else will. It’s hard to think about spending money for self-improvement options such as coaching or training when you don’t have much money to spend. But you will eventually come to the point where you realize that nobody else is going to spend the time, make the effort, or invest the money in your growth. You have to do it. So you need to find a way to maximize your ability to save and make money so that you can equip yourself with the mindset and skills it will take to get your life moving in a different direction. You can learn a lot about this sort of personal development mindset switch on this episode of Happy Black Woman. Today’s podcast episode is motivated by Aimee’s desire to have all of her listeners hear her guest’s story. Kara Gott Warner, Creative Knitting Magazine Executive Editor, and host of Power Purls Podcast, began her career designing knitting patterns in 2002. Her designs have been published in several magazines, including: Creative Knitting, Vogue Knitting, Family Circle Easy Knitting and Interweave Knits. Kara has a background as a technical illustrator, working with craft book publishers such as Random House, Lark Books, Sterling Publishing and F+W. Kara first joined Annie's Publishing in 2008 as knitting book editor, and then in 2010 signed on as Executive Editor of Creative Knitting Magazine and Annie’s knitting publications. Through Power Purls Podcast, Kara's mission is to dig deep and ask those burning questions about what turned her guests on to the “two sticks and fiber,” in the first place, and what keeps their needles moving! TWEET: If you just focus on one small aspect of your industry, it’s going to be hard ~ Kara Gott Warner The negative power of pigeonholing yourself. When Kara Gott Warner began working full time as editor of Creative Knitting Magazine, she became aware of the ease with which knitters could pigeonhole themselves. To her, it seemed that too many would lump themselves into a certain skill category and feel that they were unable to move from there. Kara felt that the categories needed to be broader, so she created new categories to enable people to more easily move from one to the next without as much fear of stepping out of their comfort zone. Isn’t that a great parable for life? We all too easily think of ourselves in one set way when the reality is that each of us has the ability to grow, mature, and increase in skill so that we are not today what we were tomorrow. Hear more of Kara’s insights on this episode. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. It’s common nowadays for people to talk about the impossibility of overnight success and today’s guest, Kara Gott Warner agrees. Her journey from an unhappy financier to editor of Creative Knitting Magazine was almost a decade long. She attributes the success she’s experienced to constant motion in the same direction. She wasn’t standing still. She was moving toward what she wanted, preparing herself, learning, growing in the skills it would take to become what she wanted to be. In this episode Kara unpacks her thoughts about how that happened in her own journey and gives some advice about the importance of preparing yourself for the future while you’re waiting for the opportunities to come. TWEET: I was on a trajectory I didn’t like and my husband encouraged me to quit ~ Kara Gott Warner When you truly care about something you just can’t quit. Kara Gott Warner had a reintroduction to knitting in her early 20s. It became a place of solace and personal therapy for her at the end of a hard or busy day. She fell in love with knitting and began designing patterns of her own. But it wasn’t long before she realized that she wanted to somehow make her love for knitting into a career. That might sound crazy because knitting doesn’t sound like a very lucrative business niche, and it’s not. But Kara didn’t care about that. Her desire was to always have knitting be near the center of her life and that included her work. So she set out in that direction and never looked back. Even though hard times came, she didn’t allow herself to become discouraged because she cared about knitting so much. Aimee does a great job of drawing out Kara’s story and the lessons she’s learned on her way to the top, so be sure you listen in to this inspiring episode. Looking back, what things would you change? Most of us have missteps or regrets of one kind or another - both small and more serious. But when Aimee asked her guest, Kara Gott Warner what she would change if she could start her journey over, Kara said, “Not a thing.” She believes that everything she’s been through has been for her own growth and development and that if any of those things were magically changed, she wouldn’t be the person she is today. Now THAT is a refreshing perspective, and Kara’s full of them. You can hear the entire conversation Aimee had with Kara, Editor of Creative Knitting Magazine, on this episode of Chasing Dreams.
