Fr. Mike uses the readings today to ask the question, how can we love the Lord joyfully, and with our whole hearts? In scripture today we see David succeed in this, while his son Solomon is divided in his love of God. Fr. Mike also explains why David was seeking his own power when taking the census in 2 Samuel, and how he fell subject to the evil one's tempting. Today's readings are 2 Samuel 24, 1 Chronicles 29, and Psalm 30. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar dive into the importance of doctrine in the Christian life, challenging the idea that doctrine is cold or unnecessary. They emphasize that doctrine isn't exclusive to Christianity—everyone has a belief system, even atheists. As soon as you begin to answer questions about who Jesus is, you're entering doctrinal territory. Christians are called to meditate on the Word of God because without sound doctrine, it's easy to believe a lie. The guys talk about how many believers avoid doctrine due to a misunderstanding of the gospel. When you understand the gospel as adoption into God's family, gratitude drives you to know your Savior more. There's no divide between deep love for God and sound theology. Doctrine is rooted in theology, which is the knowledge of God—and you can't love someone you don't know. Each truth learned about God is another reason to love Him. Mark reminds us that good doctrine leads to doxology—right worship. The way you live spiritually and physically will catch up with you, and without sound doctrine, decisions lack a foundation. Discernment is knowing the difference between right and almost right, which can be the difference between truth and deception. As Ray mentions, a sign of the end times is people turning from sound doctrine to what suits their desires, following prosperity preachers who don't teach the true gospel.Church history also reminds us of the weight of doctrine—people have died for it. While unity is important, the truth should never be sacrificed. Unsound doctrine often stems from a lack of seriousness about sin. The guys discuss how peace should be pursued where possible, but not at the expense of truth. Essential doctrines—like the authority of Scripture, the nature of God, the Trinity, the person and work of Jesus, salvation, the Holy Spirit, the church, and Christ's return—are non-negotiable. Secondary issues, though important, are not hills to die on.The group also warns against extremes—those who read only the Bible and reject all theological resources, and those who rely solely on commentaries without reading Scripture. Doctrine should be both understood and lived out. Truths like the doctrine of creation remind us we are made in God's image, and eschatology offers comfort in a chaotic world. When confronting false doctrine, we must do so with humility, remembering Philippians 2 and esteeming others higher than ourselves. Doctrine isn't just information—it's transformation, guiding how we live, worship, and walk with Christ daily.Send us a textThanks for listening! Saint Constantine was born in 272, the son of Constantius Chlorus, ruler of the western part of the Roman Empire, and St Helen. When his father died in 306 he was proclaimed successor to the throne. The empire was ruled at that time by several Caesars, each with his own territory. When Constantine learned that the Caesars Maxentius and Maximinus had joined against him, he marched on Italy. It was there that, on the eve of a decisive battle outside Rome, he saw in the sky a radiant Cross with the words "In this sign conquer." He ordered that a battle-standard be made bearing the image of a cross and inscribed with the Name of Jesus Christ. The following day he and his forces attacked and won a spectacular victory. He entered Rome in triumph and in 312 was proclaimed "Emperor of the West" by the Senate. (His brother-in-law Licinius ruled in the East.) Soon thereafter he issued his "Edict of Milan," whereby Christianity was officially tolerated for the first time, and persecution of Christians ceased. (Many believe, mistakenly, that the Edict made Christianity the only legal religion; in fact, it proclaimed freedom of religion throughout the Empire).   Licinius, though he pretended to accept the Edict, soon began persecuting Christians in his domain. In response, Constantine fought and defeated him in 324, becoming sole Emperor of the entire Roman Empire. In 324 he laid the foundations of a new capital in the town of Byzantium; in 330 he inaugurated the new capital city, naming it "New Rome" and "Constantinople." In 325 he called the First Ecumenical Council at Nicea, attending its sessions himself. Shortly before his repose in 337, he received Holy Baptism; he died on Holy Pentecost, at the age of sixty-five, and was interred in the Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople.   St Constantine's holy mother Helen, in her role as "Augusta" of the Empire, founded countless churches. She traveled to Jerusalem and found the True Cross on which the Lord was crucified. In the Holy Land she established churches at the sites of Christ's Nativity and burial, which still stand today in much-modified form. She died at about eighty years of age.

During the Civil War, Southern states relied on salt perhaps even more than their Northern counterparts. The commodity preserved various foods—such as fish—and allowed more people to eat and even keep food supplied for a rainy day.As the Union troops began capturing Confederate saltworks, the food supplies there literally began drying up. It was one of the things that led to the end of the war, as food supplies literally not only lost their taste, but their preservative qualities. Things got so bad in the last 18 months of the war that some people were reduced to eating tree roots and other non-food vegetation. Not exactly an appetizing meal!Matthew 5:13 says, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”As ambassadors for Christ, we must make sure that our salt does not lose its effectiveness. Today's chat dives deep into the intricate dance of defining primary and secondary issues of faith, a topic more important than finding the right taco truck in a city full of them. Andrew Rapaport, the host, brings his A-game as he engages in a spirited discussion, shedding light on the critical distinctions between what believers should stand firm on versus what might be better left to the side. The duo tackles the common pitfall of majoring in minors while encouraging listeners to focus on the essentials that truly matter in their faith journey. They explore the nuances of how different interpretations can lead to spirited debates without losing sight of unity in Christ. As they navigate the complex web of doctrines, they serve a hearty reminder that understanding and grace should be at the forefront of our discussions, especially in an age where social media can turn a simple disagreement into a full-blown theological throwdown.Takeaways: In the podcast, they dive deep into the distinctions between primary, secondary, and tertiary theological issues, emphasizing how misplacing these can lead to unnecessary conflicts within the Christian community. Andrew Rapaport shares his journey from a Jewish upbringing to becoming a pastor, illustrating how one's background can shape their theological perspectives and interactions with faith. The hosts discuss the importance of grace and understanding in theological debates, suggesting that Christians should strive for civility and openness when encountering differing views on faith. A lively discussion unfolds around the implications of charismatic gifts and their cessation, highlighting how these beliefs can significantly affect one's understanding of Scripture and church practices. The episode addresses the need for believers to differentiate between essential doctrines that are explicitly taught in Scripture and those that are more nuanced, which can lead to meaningful and respectful dialogue. Listeners are encouraged to reflect on their theological presuppositions and be open to re-evaluating their beliefs in light of Scripture, fostering a more inclusive and understanding church environment. Welcome to this special episode of the China Compass Podcast, #31 in the weekly “Prison Pulpit” series! I'm your China travel guide, Missionary Ben. You can follow me on X (@chinaadventures) where I post daily reminders to pray for China (PrayforChina.us). To learn more about our ministry endeavors or get one of the missionary biographies I’ve published, visit www.PrayGiveGo.us! I want to begin again by reminding you why I started this weekly China Compass series: to encourage you to pray for Pastor Wang Yi (and others like him) as Hebrews 13:3 teaches us, by sharing from his own words and sermons. (We’ve also learned a lot from Richard Wurmbrand.) This month is the anniversary of my arrest and interrogation seven years ago…UNBEATEN.VIP! I recorded last week's episode in Malaysia, discussing the difficult and potentially dangerous situation for Christians in Malaysia. Today (tonight) I’m on a long layover in Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, SE of Dubai, and just across the Sea of Oman south of Iran. Christianity and Persecution in Oman https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity_in_Oman https://www.opendoorsus.org/en-US/persecution/countries/oman/ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oman Samuel Zwemer on Borden of Yale (BordenofYale.com) I never saw anyone come to Egypt with eyes more open to see the kingdom of God. Others come to see the mummies, study history, or join the crowds of tourists flocking to the pyramids, never once lifting their eyes to see the fields “ripe for harvest” (John 4:35). Borden had not even been in Cairo two weeks before he mobilized the seminary students to attempt a door to door outreach, hoping to give away Christian literature to the whole city of nearly a million people. Here was a man built like an athlete, with the mind of a scholar and theologian in regard to God’s truth, and the heart of a little child, full of faith and love. He was so kind in his visits to our own home that our children would bounce upon his knee as if they had known him for years. Knowing that he would have to learn Chinese eventually, he came to Cairo to become fluent in Arabic first. Here was a young man who deliberately set out to learn not one but two of the most difficult languages in the world, before diving into his life’s calling of declaring the unsearchable riches of Christ to China’s Muslims. We're recouping from all the travel we've done in the last week, so enjoy a classic ep. A lot of moral questions revolve around doing or not doing something, but what if the biggest moral problems were actually about the very way we live our lives? Driving, smartphones, food production, etc. are all far more political than most people realize. In this episode, we talk through the book The Imperial Mode of Living by Ulrich Brand and Markus Wissen. Get the book here if you want: https://www.versobooks.com/books/3691-the-imperial-mode-of-livingIntro Music by Amaryah Armstrong Outro music by theillogicalspoonhttps://theillalogicalspoon.bandcamp.com/track/hoods-up-the-low-down-technified-blues*Get Magnificast Merch* https://www.redbubble.com

In today's readings, Fr. Mike highlights David's humility in two instances: when David asked the Gibeonites how he could repair their relationship after they had been mistreated by Saul, and when David takes a step back from battle. He also explains the role of the gatekeepers as people who would be responsible for guarding the doors to the Temple. The readings are 2 Samuel 21, 1 Chronicles 26, and Psalm 40.
