“We built a business that was really there to be connected directly to the community, and I think we succeeded in that.”There are plenty of family-owned and run businesses in the local beer world, but few in which so many family members are as directly involved as Five Barrel Brewing in Wollongong. As if to prove the point, on the day we visited to record this podcast, Jane (mum) and Mike (dad) were setting up the bar and beer garden. Meanwhile, two of their three kids working in the business, Phil and Lucy, took a break from work to join us upstairs above the brewpub where, at various times, both Phil and his parents have lived. And it wasn't long before brother Tim got a mention too, in relation to a new side business he and Phil have just launched (which we learned about from Mike). The O'Sheas first opened Five Barrel in December 2015, just the second brewery in the Illawarra. Now, as they celebrate their first decade, they're part of a far larger local beer scene, which itself forms the start of an ever-longer South Coast Ale Trail stretching most of the way to the Victorian border. It's a scene in which they helped pave the way for the others, the evolution of which is just one of the topics covered in this episode. As well as reflecting on the ten years-and-counting – from the early days pouring samples in a restricted tasting room, releasing Hoppy Amber, and winning best brewery at the 2016 Sydney Craft Beer Week – right through to the launch of brewery software platform Abbl and plans to find a new home in the coming years, Lucy and Phil share insights on all manner of subjects relevant to anyone working in the craft beer community – all in typically thoughtful style.Prior to that chat, our look back on the week that was takes in our man in the South West's day spent soaking up the sights and smells of Margaret River Hops, part two of our Metro Tunnel Crafty Crawl, the new-look Molly Rose, and our jam-packed, inspiring trip to NSW.If you enjoy the show, please feel free to like and subscribe, rate and review wherever you watch or listen. Art Gallery of NSW director Maud Page says one of her biggest failures was not speaking up enough early in her career. “I’ve always spoken up if I thought there was an injustice, but one that I feel was a failure was when I fell pregnant," the gallery's chief executive says. On this week's episode, BOSS editor Sally Patten sits down with Page to find out about the early challenges she faced before taking on the state's top arts job – and the ones she's navigated since. Granny flats are being sold as the answer to everything—housing affordability, rental yield, multigenerational living, even retirement planning. But once you get past the glossy numbers and council checklists, the reality is far more nuanced. In this episode, we sit down with Wally Gebrael, Co-Director at Granny Flat Solutions, to unpack what actually determines whether a granny flat works — and why so many builds quietly underperform. We break down the planning pathways (CDC vs DA), site constraints that kill feasibility, design mistakes that slash rental appeal, and the hidden costs investors rarely factor in.We also explore the bigger picture: how granny flats fit into Australia's housing crisis, why quality and layout directly impact yield, and when a granny flat can genuinely improve cash flow, versus when it simply ties up capital. Wally shares real-world examples from thousands of builds, including what separates high-performing granny flats from regret purchases. If you're considering building one — whether for family, flexibility, or investment — this episode will help you decide with clarity, not hype.Episode Highlights00:20 — Meet the Expert: Wally Gebrael03:12 — Financial Considerations and Value Addition06:18 — Challenges in Building Granny Flats08:44 — Council Regulations and Approval Process12:56 — Cost and Budgeting for Granny Flats23:59 — Designing Functional Spaces with a Wow Factor24:22 — Balancing Cost and Value for Investors and Homeowners25:37 — Optimal Granny Flat Designs29:52 — Impact of Interest Rates on Investments32:03 — Financial Considerations and Tax Implications37:57 — Common Mistakes in Granny Flat Projects43:43 — Final Thoughts and Listener QuestionsAbout the GuestWally Gebrael is the Co-Director at Granny Flat Solutions, one of Australia's leading specialists in secondary dwellings. His insights aren't theoretical—they're based on real budgets, real rental outcomes, and the recurring mistakes homeowners and investors make when chasing “easy yield.”In a market saturated with oversimplified advice, Wally focuses on feasibility, function, and long-term performance—not sales-driven optimism.Connect with WallyWally's LinkedInGranny Flat Solutions' LinkedInGranny Flat Solutions' WebsiteGranny Flat Solutions' InstagramGranny Flat Solutions' Facebook

Trigger warning: suicide and suicidal ideationThis week we have the privilege to talk to someone with incredible experience working in the mental health space.Ken Meldrum has a history of being a registered nurse for 46 years working mainly in Rural, Remote Health and Mental Health. He specialised in Suicide Prevention and Men's Health during the last 20 years.Ken retired from Qld Health 5 years ago and has since been employed with Lifeline Community Recovery, Stand By Support after Suicide Service and currently is working with Uniting Care Farmer to Farmer Support Service across Southern Qld and Far North Qld.Ken also established a Suicide Prevention Network since retirement in Boonah, Qld, through which he was able to raise money to establish two Blue Tractors within that farming community with the sign saying “Feeling Blue – Get Help” which has raised a lot of interest and sparked many conversations around suicide and suicide prevention. Other Communities across Qld, NSW and Tasmania are also establishing similar structures.Since May Ken has worked with old friends he has known for over 50 years from the motorcycling community to establish Blue Bikes on busy roads across Norther NSW and Qld with the same message, initially three were planned from March last year but the number is now approaching 20, we established a not-for-profit organisation titled the Blue Motorcycle Project Inc and a Facebook Group with now over 600 members. In this episode he shares:- His life before working in nursing and how early experiences shaped his perspective of suicide- His entry into nursing, work in jails and psychiatric wards, and the “baptism of fire” training that shaped his approach- His encounters with people who took their own lives and the impact of losing patients and friends unexpectedly- How rural and remote work and Indigenous community experience exposed the scale and causes of suicide risk- The Blue Tractor and Blue Motorcycle Project—why visible roadside blue machinery/bikes start conversations about suicide- The power of practical community-focused prevention- His own lived experience of suicidal ideation, the protective factors that kept him alive, and what recovery looked like- How connection, simple listening (“do no harm”), and community partnerships can reduce isolation and save livesKey Quotes"I just fell into a really dark place and I started to have real thoughts about taking my life.""It's the lack of connections, the loss of connections that cause the problem. Once people become isolated, that's when they're at risk.""The bottom line, the most important thing we can do is do no harm. Sit down and listen to 'em. In this episode, Matt is joined by Brian Boyle — hunter, conservationist, and a key figure in the development of public land hunting in both NSW and the Northern Territory. Brian shares first hand stories from his time on the Game Council of NSW, reflecting on the early days of regulated public land access and the challenges of building systems that balanced conservation with opportunity. We dive into remote Northern Territory buffalo hunts alongside local Aboriginal communities, exploring the cultural connections to land and wildlife management in some of Australia's most isolated country. The conversation also covers chasing Hog Deer on Sunday Island through the Australian Deer Association, of which Brian is a member, and the unique traditions and structure around that hunt. With decades of experience across hunting, policy, and advocacy, Brian brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Now working with the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party, he offers perspective on the current political climate, the pressures facing hunters today, and where things may be heading. It's an episode packed with stories, insight, history, and honest discussion about conservation and representation in modern Australia. For the latest information, news, giveaways and anything mentioned on the show, you can find all the links here. John Anderson sits down with former NSW Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner Mike Newman to examine the culture, size and direction of Australia's modern public service. While both men acknowledge the vital role of capable public servants, they question whether the system has become bloated, inward-looking and detached from the realities faced by households and businesses. At a time of falling productivity and rising cost-of-living pressures, they ask whether the balance between administration and wealth creation has drifted out of alignment. The discussion moves beyond numbers to deeper questions of accountability, incentives and institutional culture. From regulatory overreach to major project failures, Newman argues that expansion has too often come without corresponding responsibility. Yet, he also highlights examples where strong leadership and a service-first mindset have delivered genuine reform. It is a serious, practical examination of how Australia governs itself, and what must change to restore discipline, effectiveness and public trust.Mike Newman has four decades of business experience in North Asia and served as NSW's Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner to the region. He has written insightfully on many topics, and most recently on the problem of government bureaucracies.

Filmmaker Jordan Giusti's Floodland is an impactful documentary that takes audiences to the flood-prone landscape of Lismore, NSW. Thousands of people call the region home, and yet, due to the climate crisis and government inaction, they find themselves in horrifying situations where their homes are swept away, they lose friends and family, and pets and livestock end up as collateral damage for an ongoing emergency that has no solution in sight. Resilience is a word that's used for those who call Lismore home, the flood capital of Australia, but Jordan's documentary shows that there is a way to solve this crisis.Shot with an immediacy and the level of compassion and understanding that elevates the crisis at hand, Floodland is a powerful document for the region, the people who call it home, and their future. The following interview sees Nadine Whitney, someone who lived in the region, interview Jordan and producer Rachel Forbes about making the film. This interview was recorded ahead of the films screenings at the Sydney Film Festival, and is being published now ahead of Floodland's release around Australia this week. For screening dates and information, visit Floodland.com.au.Sign up for the latest interviews, reviews, and more via https://www.thecurb.com.au/subscribe/ Hosted on Acast. Is Your Brand Supporting Your Growth — or Slowing It Down? As your business grows, your brand needs to grow with it. But many small businesses operate under a brand created in the early days — when they were charging less, serving different clients, or still figuring out their positioning. And over time, that misalignment can quietly slow your growth. In this episode, I'm joined by Melissa Horvat, Founder of Graphika, a branding partner to professional service providers who want to build clear, compliant and credible brands that support long-term success. With nearly three decades of experience — working with organisations like Paralympics Australia, NSW and QLD Government, corporate clients and hundreds of small businesses — Melissa understands how to translate your expertise into a brand presence that builds trust and authority. In this conversation, we explore what branding really means for professional service providers — and how to ensure your brand reflects the level of business you're building now, not the one you started with. If you're serious about sustainable growth, this episode will help you assess whether your brand is an asset… or a limitation. Here's What We Cover in This Episode: The subtle signs your brand is out of alignment with the level of business you're operating at now Why professional service providers need more than a "nice logo" to build authority and trust How a clear and credible brand shortens the sales cycle and attracts better-fit clients The role compliance and professionalism play in building confidence with high-value clients What happens behind the scenes when your visual identity doesn't match your expertise Practical first steps to elevate your brand without overcomplicating the process Branding isn't about making your business look bigger than it is. It's about making sure your brand accurately reflects the quality, expertise and experience you bring — so the right clients recognise your value immediately. If you've been feeling like your business has evolved… but your brand hasn't caught up, this conversation will give you clarity on what to do next. Straight out of law school, many young lawyers dream of the prestige and fast pace of BigLaw – but Sally Callander flips the script, revealing how practising in the bush can offer career-defining skills, deeper client connections, and a lifestyle you'll never get in the city. In a recent episode of The Protégé Podcast, host Grace Robbie speaks with Sally Callander, principal and owner of DLH Solicitors, about her journey from practising in Sydney's legal scene to regional NSW, explores her experience practising law in the bush for the past 14 years, delves into the rewarding lifestyle and full career she has been able to create, and points out the practical skills and expertise she has been able to gain that aren't typically available in city practice. Callander also highlights the growing trend of young lawyers reckoning the value of spending time practising in regional areas, discusses how such experiences can fast-track professional development, debunks the notion that moving to the bush is career-limiting, and shares practical advice for young lawyers considering this path and want to embrace this opportunity.

Joe Hildebrand joined us to break down Chris Minns' announcement that Monday April 27 is officially a public holiday after Anzac Day falls on a Saturday, making NSW finally catch up with states like WA and the ACT who've been doing this for years. Joe explained why NSW has historically had the fewest public holidays in the country, whether two-up is legal all weekend (it's not, Saturday only), and why some businesses are fuming about penalty rates despite everyone else celebrating a long weekend.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
