Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.    This week, I'm looking back to a great conversion I had with Olympic silver medalist John Coyle. Known as “The Time Guy,” John is a thought leader in the field of chronoception—the study of how humans process time— and one of the world's leading experts in Design Thinking. A graduate of Stanford University's Product Design Program and a Kellogg MBA, John is an NBC sports analyst, two-time TEDx presenter and sought-after keynote speaker. His presentations combine the data and analytics of a professor with the inspired storytelling of an Olympic athlete. He is also a best-selling author of two books, Design For Strengths: Applying Design Thinking to Individual and Team Strengths and The Art of Really Living Manifesto. As a speaker and an author, his talent is in weaving facts, examples, and intellectual principles into engaging stories that leave you with actionable ideas.   THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone interested in design thinking, optimizing for their strength and maximizing their time to make major breakthroughs.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… John shares his experiences as an Olympian, an innovator, and a world-class “design-thinker.” His personal experiences, metaphors, and practical guidelines serve as a roadmap for innovation and leaning into your strengths as opposed to trying to solve “weaknesses.” He also shares how design thinking can seep into and affect other parts of your life and career to achieve breakthrough performances and create more meaning.     WHAT I LOVE  MOST… John's great and illustrative anecdotes that help anyone focus on design thinking, solving the right problems, and learning how to lean into your strengths as opposed to solving for your non-strengths.     Running Time: 35:55   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani Online: LinkedIn Facebook X   Find John Online: Website LinkedIn    John's Books:  Design For Strengths  The Art of Really Living Manifesto

Building a successful startup takes more than just a great product idea and a talented team. It also requires careful management of resources, effective decision-making, and a thorough understanding of the market and competition. In this episode, Shelly Hod Moyal shares her insights on venture capital and investing strategies, addressing key concepts like managing dilution and diversification, balancing personal investing requirements with potential returns, and determining whether a deal is a good deal. Learn how to maximize returns and manage risks in venture capital investing with expert advice from Shelly Hod Moyal, co-founder and co-CEO of iAngels.About Our GuestShelly Hod Moyal is a finance and investing expert, having built her career on Wall St. prior to co-founding iAngels. As the co-CEO, she works with global investors to invest in some of Israel's best startups. As a GP and Kellogg MBA alumna, Shelly holds numerous board positions and is actively involved in bringing value to iAngels portfolio companies. Living in Tel Aviv, Shelly and her husband have 4 children, and as a passionate art aficionado, Shelly is a member of Yedidim at Bat Sheva and Tel Aviv Museum of Art, as well as Laniado HospitalHere are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Defining venture capital  Managing dilution and diversification Balancing personal investing requirements with potential returns Determining allocation  to a down round Discerning if a deal is a good deal Offsetting the write-offs Episode Highlights:[08:43] What is Venture Capital and How It WorksAs an investor, investing in different rounds of a company involves taking different risks and potentially earning different returns. The earlier the round, the more risk and potential for high reward there is. Dilution is a common issue that requires reinvestment to maintain ownership percentage. Venture capital investments are illiquid and require a long-term mindset that entails holding onto the investment until the company goes public or gets acquired to receive returns. To protect ownership percentage, anti-dilution provisions can be negotiated.[12:38] Managing Dilution and Diversification in Venture Capital InvestingVenture capital investing requires a careful consideration of dilution and diversification to minimize risk and maximize returns. Each round of funding dilutes your percentage of ownership by approximately 25-30%, and investing in individual companies carries a high failure rate. Building a diversified portfolio and keeping funds available for follow-on investments can help manage these risks. It's important to remain defensive in situations where you need to protect your investments and to invest in around 20 companies to reduce risk.[18:21] Balancing Personal Investing Requirements With Potential ReturnsInvestors may agree with the value of a company but choose not to invest based on their personal investing requirements, risk tolerance, and potential for returns. It's common for angel investors to stop investing when the valuation becomes too high or if they are already heavily invested in a particular opportunity. Ultimately, the decision to continue investing in a venture capital opportunity requires weighing the potential risks and returns against your investment goals. Resources Mentioned:https://www.iangels.com/

Wine Logistics with Andrew Walleck Andrew Walleck and Joe Lynch discuss wine logistics. Andrew is the COO of Wine Access, the leading online direct-to-consumer wine platform offering the world's most coveted wines. About Andrew Walleck Andrew Walleck has 16 years of experience in Operations, Strategy, Merchandising, and eCommerce across a variety of industries. A Kellogg MBA grad, Andrew spent 8 years with McMaster-Carr, one of the country's foremost innovators in Operations, serving seven different senior leadership roles as well as a Merchandiser for a company in one of the largest product categories. Prior to that, he was a management consultant to Corning, Inc., Eaton, and others. Andrew has his WSET Level 3 and is currently studying for his WSET Level 4 Diploma. Andrew also developed his own wine label prior to joining Wine Access. About Wine Access Founded in 1996, Wine Access is the leading online direct-to-consumer wine platform offering the world's most coveted wines. As one of the earliest adopters of ecommerce and DTC offerings in the digital wine space, Wine Access curates high quality wines from every wine region around the globe, creating more accessible ways to enjoy wine that extend beyond the bottle. Wine Access' Master of Wine, Master Sommelier, and team of industry experts taste over 20,000 wines a year, offering only those that exceed the expectations defined by their prices. Through Wine Access' network of family-owned, legendary winemakers, and coveted marquees, customers have access to an inspiring curation of unique and often unattainable wines. To build a deeper understanding and connection to each bottle, every shipment includes original tasting notes, flavor profiles, pairing recommendations, and compelling original stories that capture the authentic personality, passion, and philosophy of the producer. Wine Access also offers a Wine Club membership that unlocks access to rare and highly coveted wine selections from every major wine-growing region around the globe four times a year. In 2021, Wine Access was named the official wine provider of the MICHELIN Guide. Key Takeaways: Wine Logistics Andrew Walleck is the COO of Wine Access, the leading online direct-to-consumer wine platform offering the world's most coveted wines. In the interview, Andrew and Joe discuss wine logistics and why it is so challenging. The biggest problems in regards to wine logistics and delivery are: Every state has their own laws regulating alcohol and it's delivery. Wine is an adult transaction so ensuring that the wine is received by an adult is critical. The quality and flavor of wine is potentially impacted by vibration, temperature, and other environmental conditions. Managing the uneven supply and demand is difficult. Wine makers take great pride in their products and they see themselves more as artisans as opposed to manufacturers – so they typically won't rush or send wine they are not proud of. Since wine delivery is so challenging, Wine Access has developed an online direct-to-consumer wine platform that incorporates the best practices for temperature control, security, visibility, and delivery. Wine Access makes it easy to discover and enjoy the world's most inspiring wines through expert curation, storytelling, and perfect provenance—satisfaction guaranteed. The Wine Access Teams is headquartered in Napa, California and includes a Master of Wine, a Master Sommelier, and a selective crew of industry experts who have made in-roads in every major corner of every wine region around the globe. The company's connections unlock access to the most exclusive wines, from first growth Bordeaux estates to Napa cult icons and exciting discoveries along the way. The Kellogg MBAi: Where business and technology intersect [Show summary] Kate Smith, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Kellogg School of Management, breaks down the school’s brand-new MBAi joint degree and how it prepares students for careers at the intersection of business and technology. Interview with Kate Smith, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the Kellogg School of Management [Show notes] As if its impressive portfolio of MBA programs (not to mention the pandemic) wasn’t enough to keep Kellogg busy, it also launched a brand-new program at the beginning of this academic year. Let's catch up on what's new at Kellogg and learn about its new accelerated joint MBA at the intersection of business and technology management. Kate Smith is the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Kellogg School of Management. Kate earned her own MBA from Kellogg in 1998, then worked in marketing for leading brands including General Mills, Quaker Oats, and Pepsi. She returned to Kellogg in 2012. Let's start with some basic information about the MBAi. First of all, what is it? Who's it for? What's the structure? And what degree do graduates actually receive? [2:05] Thank you for opening on what is an exciting innovation here at Kellogg. We have just introduced this new program in the Kellogg portfolio of MBA options. The MBAi is a new joint degree. It has been launched by the Kellogg School of Management and the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University. The vision for this degree is that it is at the nexus of business and technology management. The MBAi is building on a long legacy of innovation and collaboration between Kellogg and McCormick. The two schools launched, years ago, a dual degree called the triple M program, which provides rigorous business education integrated with a strong foundation in design innovation. The MBAi is a new specialized program that is meant for students with prior undergraduate STEM experience, and/or prior work experience in the tech sector. Examples could include having worked as a product manager, a data scientist, a software engineer, an R and D associate. We're going to be building what I'd say is a real nice diversity of backgrounds leveraging tech and STEM expertise so that they can contribute that on a journey to accelerating their knowledge and foundational expertise at this intersection of business and technology. It's going to be a fast-paced, five-quarter program, which is (I think) very appealing in terms of the speed at which you can pursue and complete your MBA degree experience and immediately jump into what is a rapidly evolving tech sector. The curriculum will include the entire Kellogg MBA core curriculum, as well as technical courses in topics such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, data wrangling, robotics, computational thinking for business. That will also be complemented with the entire Kellogg MBA core curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to round out their degree with just a few electives, choosing between both Kellogg and McCormick. This program is intensive, with a five-quarter format as opposed to our two-year program, which is a traditional six-quarter program format. There's a little less flexibility on electives and more of an intentional design into the curriculum, integrating the aspects of data analytics, AI, etc., and weaving that throughout the curricular offerings. The graduates will have one degree conferred by both Kellogg and McCormick. It's a joint degree, so it's different than a dual degree. Our current triple M is a dual degree, one degree conferred by McCormick, the MBA conferred by Kellogg. This is a joint MBA degree called the MBAi, conferred by us both together. You're going to be going five quarters straight through, so you're going to start in the fall, and you're going to take courses for five consecutive quarters and graduate the following December. ...

Learn all about Kellogg’s MBA options from the inside [Show Summary] Assistant Dean of Admissions Kate Smith discusses Kellogg’s rich menu of options as well as what Kellogg is looking for in applicants, changes to its MBA application, and how to get in. Interview with Kate Smith, Assistant Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid at the Kellogg School of Management [Show Notes] Kate earned her own MBA at Kellogg in 1998 and then worked in marketing for leading brands including General Mills, Quaker Oats, and Pepsi. She returned to Kellogg in 2012 and assumed her current role as Assistant Dean, Admissions and Financial Aid at the Kellogg School of Management. What makes Kellogg unique? [2:09] We intentionally designed the Kellogg learning experience to grow you both personally and professionally. Between extensive global opportunities and the challenging experiential learning, as well as customized electives, the curriculum is shaped by real world business problems and dedicated to developing dynamic leaders to see possibilities that others can’t. In our innovative curriculum you will learn how to evaluate opportunities, catalyze teams, and engage with world-class faculty. Whether being advised by a venture capitalist on a start-up, joining a trek with thought leaders in industry sectors of interest, or participating in a fireside chat with a professor who served as a Fortune 500 CEO, we offer in-depth experiential learning with a collaborative culture and distinctive community. Kellogg offers a range of full-time degree programs, and we hear consistently that many students who learn about them are very excited and weren’t aware of them before. All are designed to fit student interests. We have the two-year MBA (traditional program) that offers the opportunity to explore different interests, and often career pivots. We have a one-year MBA program and two joint, dual-degree programs. Our one-year program has existed for 56 years consecutively. It is for those who have completed some business coursework before attending so we qualify one-year applicants by the coursework taken. We give students credit for those courses. One-year (1Y) students start in the summer, and it’s a four-quarter program (June-June). There is an immersive first quarter for 1Y students, and then they join the second-year MBA class with electives, and they tailor their studies to their interest and professional goals. Joint degrees include the MMM, which is a dual degree with the engineering school, and you get an MS in design innovation and MBA. It is very popular for students who are interested in design-centered thinking or product management. It’s a seven quarter program and integrates with the two-year program in the fall. Last is the JD/MBA program, with the curriculum designed to be completed in three years. Finally, our alumni network is very engaged and responsive, which impresses students and applicants. We have a pay it forward culture and mindset, which you see across the board. What’s new at Kellogg in the last year? I know a lot has been happening. [14:03] We are thrilled to welcome our new dean Francesca Cornelli. She will be on campus in a few weeks and joining us from LBS, bringing an immense amount of global perspective, and in particular expertise in private equity, innovation policy, and corporate governance. I personally am very proud it is our third consecutive female dean We are the only top business school with consistent female leadership. Our curricular innovation continues to be an important focus. In the last five years we’ve launched 64 new courses, 12 courses in the last year alone – Negotiations in a Virtual World, Early Stage Healthcare Investing, and Blockchain Technology. Hospitality to Kellogg MBA [Show Summary] Libby Angst is a 2018 graduate of the Kellogg MBA program and Accepted’s newest MBA admissions consultant. Libby shares her experience in the hospitality industry, her motivations behind her job changes, her decision to pursue an MBA and what she thought was most valuable in the Kellogg MBA program. Along the way she also shares insights into the unique qualities of the hospitality industry and in the Kellogg MBA program as well as the lessons she learned as Co-Chair of The Kellogg Student MBA Admissions Committee. Interview with Libby Angst [Show Notes] Can you tell us a little about your background and where you grew up? [1:56] I grew up in a suburb 45 minutes north of Chicago. I went to a high school with over 1,000 students in my graduating class, so with a class so big it was important for me to find a niche. Mine was the tennis team, volunteering with organizations around Chicago, and my big activity was policy debating on a national circuit with my high school varsity debate team before I ended up going to Northwestern for undergrad. You worked in the hospitality industry before joining Kellogg. How did you choose that industry to launch your professional career? [2:50] During high school and college I always had odd jobs in the service industry. One of them was working at a high-end boutique folding and selling clothes, and I also worked as a tennis instructor for a nearby country club, so both required me to deliver a high level of service to discerning customers in my teenage, formative years. Additionally, in college I developed a passion for traveling after studying abroad in Madrid my junior year, my first trip to Europe. After I got back I really wanted to learn the ins and outs of the hotel industry from a highly regarded luxury chain, so luckily Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts had a worldwide sales office that hired me as an intern for two summers. Why did you choose to work for TravelClick, and then why did you decide to earn an MBA? [4:05] I had been working for Four Seasons in their property in Palo Alto, and I began using a lot of the TravelClick products to help me achieve my sales goals. A lot of them were benchmarking our performance against competitive sets - I used the tools to figure out what times of year I could charge higher rates for my corporate and group clients in order to reach my goals. After a number of years using their products I had developed a relationship with our TravelClick representative, and began exploring opportunities at that company in a sales role where I could work with large hotel chains to share how TravelClick products could add value to their companies. While I was at TravelClick working with the large hotel brands I began working a lot with asset managers. I realized the real estate side of the hotel business was not something I knew too much about, but was probably one of the most important things to know to progress my career in the travel industry. So after working at TravelClick for two years I decided I needed to learn more about business. With a liberal arts background I didn’t have the skillset, particularly in finance, that I needed so I decided to earn an MBA in order to transition into the business side to progress my career. What do you think are some of the more distinctive elements of the hospitality and travel industries? [6:30] The industry feels immediate impacts from the economy. Hotels are signing essentially 24 hour lease agreements and are extremely sensitive to things going on in the economy. The wellbeing of a hotel could shift quite literally from month to month based on how the economy is doing. So one of the things hotels really need to do is have a very firm grasp on what is happening on the micro level with the economy and then also be tuned into what is happening in the international travel industry as well, since a lot of travelers are coming from outside of the United States,

Thank you Jennifer Hayes, Senior Associate Director of Admissions at Kellogg, and Erik Mazmanian, a second-year student at Kellogg, for an excellent Q&A about life and admissions at Northwestern Kellogg. Jennifer and Erik covered a wide range of topics, including the following advice on how to avoid some common Kellogg application mistakes: Linda Abraham: What are the most common pitfalls of prospective students in the application process, and how would you advise candidates to best avoid them? Jennifer Hayes: Very good question. I’ve been at Kellogg for eight years now, so I’ve seen a lot of applications, and I’ve seen a lot of things that aren’t in the best interest of the applicant. I do think that the biggest pitfall is that people do their research on Kellogg, they understand what’s important to us as an institution, and then they frame their experiences, their accomplishments, and the things that are important to them around that. Those are things that are important to us and those are things that you will experience if you’re here. However, you don’t necessarily have to frame your experience around that. We really want to understand what has motivated you, what’s been valuable to you, and what’s been most important to you in your life and in your career. I would really encourage people to set aside that they’re applying to Kellogg and who we stand for as an institution, and really just think internally; really reflect on themselves when they’re starting to answer the application questions. You will look more genuine and more authentic. If you’re really talking about yourself, your values, and your motivations, you will look more diverse and unique as an applicant, instead of trying to do maybe what everyone else is doing by just reviewing the website and telling us those are important to you.
