Ken and John discuss how weird it is to chat about normal and fun things in 2025, the introduction of color TV, the 1966 television season, being the envy of the block when your family has the first and only color TV, The Dramaram lp Color TV, being beneath the Zenith, how old TVs were massive pieces of furniture, how people always take convinience over quality, the new embrace of hi-fi audiophile culture, the all you can eat aspect of streaming, The Monkees, living with your band, when long haired rock groups were on every TV show, educating yourself on film, the inspiration of punk rock DIY spirit, dropping off paying attention to new media at a certain point, focusing on making things instead of consuming them, Nightmare on Elm St 4: The Dreamaster, "Anything, Anything", KROQ, Rodney on the ROQ's connection to The Monkees, WFNX, how Freddy Kruger unbroke up Dramarama, growing up in Wayne New Jersey, how Dramarama all went to high school together, relocating to L.A., Made-For-TV bands, the 80s Monkees reunion shows, Rhino Records, Lancelot Link Secret Chimp, knowing the horrors of animals on TV now, Canadian TV guide, Frankenstein Jr, The Impossibles, Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, NY Metro TV, Davey Jones on Ed Sullivan, Ken forgetting that Lidsville was Butch Patrick, Jack Wild on HR Puffnstuff, Ken's theory of rock n roll popularity tied to visual media innovation, The Monkees Head, Mike Nesmith, Repoman, lost media, tape wiping, loving digital comics, living in the future, Batman '66, burning out quickly, Bruce Lee, The Green Hornet, wanting to be Mickey Dolenz, Lost in Space, how Adam West was a beautifully strange guy, Milton Berle, how cartoons went into space when they lost all inspiration, and how Ken and John's pop culture filled minds may save history in the appocalypse.

As a child I loved The Monkees TV show, It was a delight to interview Mickey and it shows! Great chat about, among other things, the 'postmodern deconstruction of The Monkees' that was the movie Head!
Tony opens the show by talking about going to North Carolina to play golf with Michael at Pinehurst, and he also talks about the Nats, and about some delicious food that was sent to the show. Michael Wilbon calls in to talk about the NBA playoffs, golf writer Ron Green Jr who was a long time sports writer for the Charlotte Observer calls in to talk about what is was like growing up with a father who was also a sports writer, and also about playing with Tony and Michael on their trip to Pinehurst, and Tony closes out the show by opening up the Mailbag. I get to interview someone I have been a fan of for years and years today - the brilliant and iconic Helen Lederer (Ledgenderer more like. It's going to catch on). I found the clip of her on Wogan that I mention in the intro. To make it even more enthralling, it's a real pleasure to see how confused Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan are by the whole thing. Forgot they were on the sofa too! Watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIvbOA8XLgw We talk about trying to phone Mickey Dolenz from the payphone at school; crushing on George Harrison; and dating artists. We also talk about Helen's new book "Not That I'm Bitter", which lifts the lid behind the scenes of the comedy world of the 1980s and 90s. It's been described as frank and funny and a bit mad - which I'm pleased to say was exactly how she was in person too. Have I said that I'm interviewing Three Bean Salad's own Henry Paker for the live show at Mach? If I haven't, I'm saying it now. I think there are a couple of tickets still left, so if you'll be at Mach, please come and join us. And come and say hi! https://machcomedyfest.co.uk/show/2024/margaret-cabourn-smith-crushed/ I think that's all the admin for this week. 1968 was a year of disappointments for the Monkees. During this year their television series was cancelled, their first motion picture effort failed at the box office, and band member Peter Tork would leave the group at the end of the year. Despite all this they would still find success in their fifth studio album, The Birds, The Bees & the Monkees. This album would chart at number 3 in the United States and would sell over a million copies.Members Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork had gained artistic control and the right to play their own instruments by 1967, and all band members were credited as producers for the songs on this album. However, much of the music on this album was created by members going their own separate ways and working with session musicians to create the tracks, with few collaborative efforts represented on the album. Nevertheless, the album shows a diverse range of styles from broadway pop, to country & western, to psychedelia. Songs from Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Michael Nesmith are represented on the album, and only Peter Tork is excluded. Tork would contribute piano work to the song “Daydream Believer,” but little else on the album.Friend of the show Mike Fernandez brings us this album in Wayne's absence. Daydream BelieverJohn Stewart of the Kingston Trio wrote this song, and it was originally performed by the Monkees with Davy Jones singing lead. It hit number 1 on the US charts. The original lyrics were “and now you know how funky I can be,” but “funky” was changed to “happy” due to concerns that funky might have drug or other unsavory references.Auntie's Municipal Court Mickey Dolenz sings lead on this track composed by Michael Nesmith and Keith Allison. We feel it has a “jangle pop country feel.” The title doesn't appear in the lyrics, and writer Michael Nesmith has no recollection why it was named as it was. It was not the only song whose title was not referenced in the song. Valleri Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart wrote this song with Davy Jones on lead. It reached number 3 on the US charts and would be the last top 10 showing for the Monkees. Guitar work is done by Louie Shelton, a session guitarist with the Wrecking Crew.Zor and Zam Bill and John Chadwick penned this track, sung by Mickey Dolenz. It is an unusual anti-war song in the Monkee's catalogue. The lyrics describe preparation for a war between two kingdoms, but no one shows up when the war is supposed to happen. This psychedelic track closes the album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “The Andy Griffith Show”This long running series on the life and time of Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry, North Carolina ended its run in this month. STAFF PICKS:Kiss Me Goodbye by Petula ClarkBrian's leads off the staff picks with a Les Reed and Barry Mason composition. This song would reach number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and would be the last time Petula Clark reached into the top 30 on that chart. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) by The First Edition Bruce brings us a psychedelic rock song recorded by the First Edition as their second single, and the first to feature Kenny Rogers on lead vocals. It peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Charts and was Rogers' first top 10 hit. The solo is played by Glen Campbell with heavy compression and tremolo to get the psychedelic feel. The lyrics are a warning about the dangers of LSD.Lady Madonna by the Beatles Rob's staff pick is a well-known tune. This was written by Paul McCartney, and marked a change into a more rock sound from the psychedelic sound they had previously explored. It talks about a working class mother who has something to do every day of the week. A Beautiful Morning by the RascalsMike features a very optimistic tune from a prolific group. This easy breezy song was written by Rascals members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, Jr. in Honolulu, Hawaii, where beautiful mornings are a common occurrence. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:2001: A Space Odyssey (Also Sprach Zarathustra by Ricard Strauss)Stanley Kubrick would make this Richard Strauss theme famous in his epic science fiction movie based on the Arthur C. Clarke book. The film as released this month in 1968....and we couldn't pronounce it either!!

From child star to teen music sensation - Mickey Dolenz has almost always been meant to be in the spotlight. At the age of ten in 1956 he starred in a children's TV show called Circus Boy under the name Mickey Braddock. He played Corky, an orphaned water boy for the elephants in a one-ring circus at the start of the 20th century. The program ran for two seasons, after which Dolenz made sporadic appearances on network television shows and pursued his education. In 1964, he was cast as Ed in the episode "Born of Kings and Angels" of the NBC education drama series Mr Novak, starring James Franciscus as an idealistic Los Angeles teacher. Dolenz was attending college in Los Angeles when he was hired for the "drummer" role in NBC's The Monkees. After The Monkees television show ended, Dolenz continued performing providing voice-overs for a number of Saturday morning cartoon series. I had the pleasure of meeting Mickey twice. Once when he headlined for one of our K-HITS concert series of Oldies artists we called "Hullabaloo" and again for this interview when he was in town for a free live concert. Here's that interview on K-HITS 92.1
Felixcavalieremusic.com It's been 50 years since The Rascals scored a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with one of their biggest hits that helped define a generation, “Good Lovin .' With Felix's signature voice, The Rascals leveraged the hit for stardom. Since then, Felix has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriter Hall of Fame, Vocal Group Hall of Fame, Grammy Hall of Fame, and Musicians Hall of Fame. Felix's new book “Memoir of a Rascal” is out now available at: Felixcavalieremusic.com The cover is an original photograph by Linda McCartney! The Monkees were a cultural phenomenon born out of television executives' desire to manufacture a rock group to cash in on the popularity of the Beatles. Over the years, Mike Nesmith, Peter Dork, Mikey Dolenz and Davy Jones have been unfairly written off as the Pre-Fab Four and accused of not playing their own instruments. Which wasn:t true since all four members were musicians (Peter Tork is said to have been a phenomenal banjo player) and a lot of this misconception of their music abilities stems from the fact the powers that be not allowing the four to play or write their own music relying heavily on studio musicians to play on the albums. With all that said, The Monkees still managed to stand the test of time and 50+ years since their debut new fans are still being introduced to both their television series and music. And despite all that, the Beatles got the Monkees too. With the recent passing of Mike Nesmith, Bret, Jamie and Andrew talk about watching the Monkees in repeats, what songs they enjoyed and who their favorite Monkee was. Bret talks about his opportunity to talk with Mickey Dolenz about doing voice acting for the Tick animated series as well as his friendship with the late great Harry Nilsson. And the three attempt to sit through an episode of the 1980s series The New Monkees. Is it as bad as everyone remembers it being? Oh who are WE kidding? NOBODY remembers that series. So here we come. Walking down the street. Hey hey!! Its the Mental Suppository… talking about the Monkees.

One day in 2000, I was standing chatting to Mickey Dolenz in Dublin Hotel before we did an interview for radio. Billy Bob Thornton walked over, said, 'Hey, hey! I flew all the way to Dublin to see the Monkees show! Aren't they cool, man?" I said, "They always were." And they were. Even as a child I knew that. So, I am very sad to hear of Mike Nesmith's death. I never interviewed him but this is me and Dolenz telling the story of The Monkees in a way that he said had never been told before. I loved their music.
*sings* HEY HEY IT'S A PODCAST! AND THIS WEEK, I WILL MONKEE AROUND! CUZ I'M TOO BUSY RANKIN' TO PUT ANYBODY DOOOOOWWWWWNNNNN! And now that I got that out of my system, I can get on with the brief summary on this week. It started with a casting call for a series that spoofed the Beatles 1964 film debut "A Hard Day's Night". 55 years later, the Monkees are still a worldwide phenomenon with MILLIONS of albums sold, a hugely devoted fanbase, and sell-out shows continuing long after their heyday in the 60s. I have never been so excited about sharing a podcast with you than I have about this one. Listening to this band's work for years and watching their TV show in reruns has always put a smile on my face and a laugh out of me on many occasions. And with the remaining members recently announcing their disbandment this year with a farewell tour, this also makes this episode bittersweet. I'll have all of you people know two things: 1. I was a Monkees fan BEFORE I was ever a Beatles fan 2. The Monkees NEED TO BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME ALREADY!!! This week, I have the super fun task of ranking the 12 albums released by Davy Jones, Mickey Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. Get on board the "Last Train to Clarksville" before this "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and maybe when this episode is all said and done, you'll actually "Listen to the Band" after this! :) Want to keep up-to-date on future episodes, album reviews, and a little music news? SUPPORT MUSIC IS NOT A GENRE ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE When we think of drummers, we imagine them on their throne behind the kit pounding away, maintaining the beat & structure of songs, and giving them energy they'd never have otherwise. We might see a mic off to the side for some backup vocals or the rare lead vocal. If a drummer comes out from the kit, it's to take a break or a bow. That's pretty damn accurate as far as 95% of drummers go (that percentage has been scientifically measured by The Guesstimators). But what about that other (scientifically measured) 5%? What do they do? They rule – on AND off the throne. They not only kick-ass on a kit, they kick it on the mic and in the studio and with a pen & paper. It's the difference between a titular monarch and one who actually calls the shots. These drummers go from laying the foundation to ruling the entire castle. Plenty of drummers have sung backup or the occasional lead – Roger Taylor, Peter Criss, Grant Hart, even Foo's Taylor Hawkins. Much respect but they aren't the subject here. I'm not even talking about all the very worthy drummers who sang lead from the start – like Dave Clark, Mickey Dolenz, Levon Helm, Sheila E., Anderson .Paak, etc. Or the multi-instrumentalists who drummed whenever – McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Todd Rundgren, Prince. And this is absolutely not about lead singers who CAN drum but didn't play that role in any significant way, like Rick Astley, Chris Cornell or Jack White. This is about drummers who went from virtual silence to running the whole show. I'm talking full frontperson status, like Ringo Starr, Phil Collins, Karen Carpenter, Don Henley, aaaaaand Dave Grohl. The Foo Fighters are now legends. They've been around over 25 years. So Dave Grohl emerges from the destruction of one legendary band to create another. He was already a veteran by 1994, and already writing & recording his own songs. He had a ton of options post Nirvana, but fronting his own band was the next logical step. And boy did the Foos come out of the gate roaring. Grohl recorded almost everything on that first album, which is an indication of how much he needed to ascend. Every step since then has been Grohl and his bandmates – the core of which has been intact for over a decade – doing more & finding more challenges to tackle. Killing it live. Conquering the pop charts – every album has had at least one massive hit, no matter what else was going on in the charts. Recording & writing on the road and making it a TV show. Adding to their sound. Their early work was thrilling to me. It was therapeutic to hear that passion burst forth after Kurt Cobain's death. It felt like what Nirvana might have done had they continued, because it merged grunge with earlier hard rock and most importantly power pop. The Foos' music had everything I was looking for, and has influenced me time and again over the years. There are songs on every REC album from Parts and Labour onward that take cues from the Foos. Most recently, this song here: REC – “Don't Say You Don't” (from the album Synergy for the Weird) Do you remember what it felt like to hear the Foo Fighters' first music so soon after Cobain's death? Was it a surprise how amazing Dave Grohl was at everything from the very beginning? Did you expect them to have such staying power, to become the hard rock standard bearers & ambassadors? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Episode 007: Seven & Seven Is: Sounds from Los Angeles01 Love - 7 & 7 Is (1966 - 45 Mono Mix) This proto-punk stunner is still years ahead of its time and set the bar for what could be done within the confines of a 2 minute single. Led by the enigmatic Arthur Lee, Love is responsible for some of the greatest music to come from the city. 02 The Byrds - Why (1966 - 45 Mono Mix) The kings of Los Angeles jangle took off for headier sounds with their single “Eight Miles High” of which this is the b-side. This take differs from the album version and packs a more immediate punch, capturing the Coltrane-esque solo they were going for better than the flip. 03 Lee Mallory - That's the Way (1966 - 45 Mono Mix) This harmony pop rocker is the first collaboration between producer Curt Boettcher and singer Lee Mallory, laying the groundwork for legendary pop psych band The Millennium. Their unmistakable harmonies are already in place and the bridge provides the perfect pallet for Curt's sonic experiments. 04 West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - If You Want This Love (1967) Brothers Dan and Shaun Harris recruited pal Michael Loyd to form a band that was then co-opted by scenester Bob Markley. This fuzzy folk rocker is taken from their first album which, like most of their catalog, is a mix of earnest pop-sike by the brothers and strange ramblings from Markley. 05 Kim Fowley - Bubblegum (1968) Speaking of scenester, Kim Fowley may be the reason the word exists. A constant on the scene, he involved himself with many a band from the city in some form or fashion. His solo efforts are patchy affairs, but this early hard rock number featuring Mars Bonfire of Steppenwolf finds him finding his muse. 06 The Standells - Did You Ever Have The Feeling (1967 - Mono Mix) Unlike may of their contemporaries, the Standells are one of the few bands that were unaffected by trends. The slight eastern overtones in this song are the closest the band would come to experimenting with psychedelia, as they called it a day before the flower power bandwagon appeared. 07 The Hook - Son of Fantasy (1968) After his time in the Leaves, Bobby Arlin teamed up with Buddy Sklar to form the more hard rock inclined The Hook. They produced two albums for Uni before calling it quits, of which this dark riff heavy tune graces their first. 08 The Peanut Butter Conspiracy - Dark On You Now (1967 - Mono Mix) Classic jangly folk-rock from this band formed from the demise of The Ashes. The band called it a day after two albums for Columbia and one for local label Challenge. 09 Spirit - Uncle Jack (1967 - 45 Mono Mix) Sounding like a long lost UK psych 45, this early single by these LA legends is uncharacteristic of their usual sound, which combined moody and introspective songs with guitarist Randy California's epic fretwork.10 The Monkees - For Pete's Sake (1967 - Mono Mix) Although often maligned for being a "fake band", the Monkees eventually came into their own. This song is the first written by Peter Tork and features Mickey Dolenz on vocals.11 The Merry Go Round - Time Will Show the Wiser (1967 - Mono Mix) Led by Emitt Rhodes, this South Bay band recorded one magnificent album before Rhodes embarked on a solo career.12 The Electric Prunes - Wind Up Dolls (1967 - Mono Mix) This SFV based band found early success and recorded two albums for Reprise in 1967 before splitting up. Their following two releases were produced by David Axelrod and feature none of the original band members13 Buffalo Springfield - Everydays (1967 - Mono Mix) Recorded live at Gold Star studios, this stunning number shows both Stephen Stills strength as a song writer as well as Neil Young's fearless guitar experiments.

As someone who was a fan of the Monkees as a teenager, and who bought all their albums and even went to see their hugely unpopular movie, Head, interviewing Micky Dolenz was a pure delight for me. We had previously talked on the phone but this recording was made during the band's rehearsal for a gig in Dublin's Vicar Street in 2000. Incidentally, while Dolenz and I were standing in a hotel lobby where we met before going to the venue, Billy Bob Thorntonwalked over, said 'Sorry for interrupting you guys" and then he addressed me, directly. He said, "I flew in just to see the gig. Aren't the Monkees, so cool." I said, "Yes they are!" And after he left I joked to Dolenz, "Did you pay him to do and say that!" He laughed. And boy we had fun that day. I hope it all comes across in this podcast.

Question: When was the first synthesizer used? Music has been around for most of humanity. It's gone through so many changes and rebirths. There are so many styles and instruments it's amazing to think of how many different types of tones and sounds you can create. And if we bring in the synthesizer those possibilities become even more infinite. A lot of us remember the 1980's and the use of the synthesizers in modern music. So many genres grew from that 1 instrument. There was new wave, synth pop, electronic, post-punk, and glam rock just to name a few. And so many artists based their sound around a synthesizer at the time. But were the 80's when the first synthesizer used? Let's take a step back for a minute. A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals through methods of subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, or frequency modulation synthesis. In a simpler way it's a circuit that generates a tone which is controlled and altered by an input. The first synthesizer came about in 1956 by the company RCA. They created the RCA Electronic Music Synthesizer Mark I. But this synthesizer was still limited to what it could do. And it didn't look like the synths we recognise today with a keyboard attached. It wasn't until 1964 when Bob Moog and Herbert Deutsch created a voltage-controlled oscillator and amplifier module with a keyboard. And in 1967 they would name it a synthesizer. Also in 1967 was the first year a commercial recording album would use a synthesizer. It was The Monkees on their Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd album. Mickey Dolenz bought one of the first Moog synthesizers and used it for the album. Synthesizers are still evolving today. They come in different price ranges, and also in different formats. You can buy ones that fit in your pocket, ones that are completely digital in music software programs, or even similar to the styles of the early years. They are some of the most fun ways to learn about sounds and music. So if you want to tap into a strange realm of noises grab yourself a synth and explore. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ttmygh/support

After enjoying years of success as a manufactured pop-rock group in the 1960s, eventually earning their independence from their corporate overlords to perform songs as they saw fit, The Monkees broke up around 1970 as their commercial fortunes waned over time. As the 1980s took shape however, an unexpected resurgence in popularity came about for the band who got their start as the subject of a sitcom, finding a new audience through reruns on MTV and Nickelodeon, and translating it into a highly profitable reunion tour. Keen on capitalizing on these newfound commercial gains, it was decided that The Monkees would put out a new studio album for these new fans.Far from building on their fresh wins, the 1987 comeback album Pool It! was neither a commercial or critical success. If anything it's considered to this day to be one of the more embarassing things to come out of the catalog of musician/actors Mickey Dolenz, Davy Jones, and Peter Tork. (4th Monkee Michael Nesmith opted not to participate, and perhaps for all the better.) The Monkees would not attempt another album until the 90s, and Pool It! ultimately marked the end of the act as little more than a nostalgia band.So many decades later Lilz & Patrick of Jukebox Zeroes have decided to take a shot at Pool It! Joined by frequent JBZ guest Scott Kurland (Writer's Bagel Basket), the three listen to the maligned Monkees record and decide for themselves whether it's not as bad as it seems, or if it's best left for dead.#MusicPodcast#PodernFamily#OddPodSquad#ZeroScience#TheMonkees#PoolIt#DatMulletThoLocal Music Feature: Shoeless Thunder - "New High Score!"
