In aflevering 234 van Nerd Culture duiken we diep in de wereld van wraak, frikandellen en muziek?! Nog nooit eerder zag je in een aflevering van Nerd Culture zoveel arthouse. En dat komt omdat dit een special is over Koreaanse films. We bespreken Skate's persoonlijke top 10 films uit Korea, waar verassend veel revenge movies tussen blijken te zitten. Maar, voordat het zover is, tast Jelle Skate's film en serie smaak af en stranden ze eerst vrij lang op een atypisch Nerd Culture onderwerp.De revival van 80's en 90's hip hopWant zoals je weet bespreken we elke aflevering eerst wat we hebben gekeken, gelezen of geluisterd. Naja, tenzij je Koos en Jasper heet, en je enthousiasme je gelijk in schildpadden materie laat duiken. Maar dat ter zijde.Skate is namelijk een muziek nerd. Een hiphop nerd, mochten die überhaupt bestaan. En er is een vette revival gaande van artiesten als Mobb Deep, Raekwon en De La Soul - alle favorieten van Skate - die op Nas' nieuwe Mass Appeal Records albums reeks Legend Has It... kunnen laten zien dat ritme en rijm niets met leeftijd te maken hebben.En gezien ook Jelle niet vies is van een moppie muziek, stranden ze bijna 20 minuten op een onderwerp dat niet vaak langskomt in Nerd Culture: muziek. Maar geloof ons, het gesprek is meer dan nerdy genoeg om een plek in deze aflevering te verantwoorden.Top 10 Koreaanse films met o.a. zombiefilm Train to BusanGezien Koos en Huey op het moment van deze opname letterlijk in de trein naar Busan zaten, was dit natuurlijk hét inkoppertje als onderwerp. Wat hopelijk een feest zal zijn voor alle krulsnor-draaiende kijkers en luisteraars.Verder begint de aflevering overigens met een losse beschouwing op de "rise to power" van de Koreaanse filmindustrie. In een interview met AP onthulde Driver dat hij samen met Soderbergh en scenarist Scott Z. Burns twee jaar werkte aan een script getiteld The Hunt for Ben Solo. De film zou zich afspelen na The Rise of Skywalker en draaien om Ben Solo's zoektocht naar verlossing.Lucasfilm zou enthousiast zijn geweest over het plan, maar Disney trok uiteindelijk de stekker eruit. Volgens Driver zagen Bob Iger en Alan Bergman “niet hoe Ben Solo nog kon leven.” Een gemiste kans, want volgens de acteur was het “één van de vetste scripts” waar hij ooit aan meewerkte. Producent Jerry Bruckheimer en regisseur Gore Verbinski zagen in hem de perfecte mix van humor en charisma om Disney's nieuwe piratenfilm te dragen. Hij heeft ‘m gezien en vertelt hoe vet hij hem vindt, in tegenstelling tot de mensheid, die weinig care lijkt te hebben voor de film.One Battle After Another lijkt te floppenEn deze film is niet de enige. Vorige week hadden we het al over de A24 film film The Smashing Machine, met onder andere Dwayne “The Pebble” Johnson. Die gaat nog steeds niet lekker. Ook Tron: Ares doet het aars, en Huey en Jelle kunnen zo hun redenen noemen hiervoor.Gelukkig is het niet alleen maar verdoemenis in de aflevering, hoor. Jelle komt namelijk terug op iets dat hij vaak heeft verkondigd in deze podcast. Wat dat is, daar moet je op play voor rammen. Maar, eerst nog 1 alinea voor de search engine optimization…Absolute Batman comic reeksHuey houdt het krulsnordraaigehalte van deze podcast zoals gewoon – en gelukkig – weer torenhoog. Want waar Jelle naast zijn verassing, verder gewoon zijn gezapige cop shows heeft gebinged, heeft Huey naast die ene arthouse film met Leonardo DiCaprio ook nog een comic reeks gelezen. En nu ligt Absolute Batman ligt in een zeker kleinste kamertje in Amsterdam Oost klaar voor iets nieuws, nadat Huey er doorheen gevlogen is.Anyways, dit is wel genoeg, denk ik. Kortom: een aflevering vol verrassingen, discussie en popcultuur-hoogtepunten die je niet wilt missen.Hideo Kojima luistert niet naar feedbackDat Hideo Kojima zijn eigen weg gaat, zal niemand verbazen. De maker van Metal Gear Solid en Death Stranding bevestigde in een interview met Edge dat hij wel naar praktische feedback luistert — zoals controls of camerabewegingen — maar nooit zijn thema's of verhalen aanpast. “Ik ben niet geïnteresseerd in iets maken dat iedereen aanspreekt,” aldus Kojima.Het is een filosofie die zijn werk al decennia kleurt: van bizarre ideeën als een game die de geur van bloed moest verspreiden tot Death Stranding, een spel waarin je pakjes bezorgt met een baby in een capsule. Testspelers noemden de game destijds massaal “verschrikkelijk”, maar dat zag Kojima juist als een goed teken. In de podcast bespreken we waarom juist deze eigenzinnigheid hem tot een cultheld maakt, en hoe hij met Death Stranding 2 opnieuw de grenzen van AAA-games oprekt.Elio wel een succes op Disney+Pixar stond jarenlang bekend als de koning van de animatie, maar de laatste jaren hapert de magie. Het meest recente voorbeeld is de sci-fi film Elio, die in de bioscoop genadeloos flopte met de slechtste openingscijfers ooit voor de studio. Zonde, want de film zelf werd positief ontvangen. Nu krijgt Elio echter een tweede leven op Disney+, waar het direct naar de nummer 1-positie op de streamingcharts schoot – zelfs boven de live-action remake van Lilo & Stitch.Toch legt dit succes een groter probleem bloot: families zijn gewend geraakt om Pixar-films thuis te streamen in plaats van er kaartjes voor te kopen. Sinds de pandemie voelt een bioscooprelease minder urgent, zeker bij originele titels. Alleen Inside Out 2 wist nog een miljard binnen te halen.
