The curtain came down on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games early this morning Beijing time. Chinese athletes have grabbed more gold medals than they obtained in the previous Games in Tokyo. What is even more impressive is the sportsmanship they displayed in the competition fields. Medals are valued by athletes and the countries they represent, but it is the demonstrations of the sporting spirit that capture people's hearts and remain in memories. And while many athletes did not win a medal, they did not leave the Olympics empty-handed. The applause the audiences gave them when they tried their utmost for the best possible results was recognition that they gave it their all for their nation.。 When Chinese table tennis player Fan Zhendong beat his Japanese counterpart Harimoto Tomokazu in the quarter-final of the men's singles competition, both players presented a wonderful match for the audience. Tomokazu, although eliminated, got credit for the perseverance he displayed. Chinese player Fan, when he lost the first two rounds, instead of losing heart, mustered his courage and played to the best of his skills and finally won the match. What the two players exhibited is the will to push themselves to new heights. Fan is one of the many Chinese athletes, who pushed themselves to personal bests to get the better of their rivals in matches. Many of them were born in the early 2000s. Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen was born in 2002, and she powered her way to the final, and won the gold medal, the first one of its kind for China and Asia as well. Swimmer Pan Zhanle, 20 years old, shattered his own world record in the men's 100-meter freestyle final with a time of 46.40 seconds to win gold, becoming the first Asian swimmer to win the men's 100m freestyle Olympic gold medal since the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. Despite the fabrication of a dope scandal to stigmatize Chinese athletes by some from the United States, that flew in the face of the most intensive testing of Chinese athletes, the Chinese swimmers' excellent performance won the applause of the global audience, gaining credit for themselves and the country as well. Not only did Chinese athletes compete to the best of their ability and skills, they also displayed the Olympic Spirit by exhibiting goodwill for their rivals before and after the matches. It was very moving when Chinese badminton player He Bingjiao held up a miniature badge of Spanish flag while receiving her Olympic silver medal on the podium. She would not have reached the final with that ease had her strong Spanish opponent in the semifinal not quit due to injury. In sports without the distortion of politicization, friendship prevails. Stigmatizev.

In this week's episode, Sean and JT discuss recent fantasy baseball player injuries, highlight fantasy MLB batters and pitchers to add/drop, crown the Dad Bod Player of the Week, and also crown the honorary Baseball Mom of the Month!
We begin this week by talking about the opening week of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, particular stories that have caught our eyes, and the general feeling of togetherness that rooting for Team USA brings and then juxtapose that positivity with the direction our political discourse has taken since the new presidential race has begun in earnest.
The way technology has changed over time is truly incredible. Take the Paris Olympics 2024, for instance. This grand event has always been about showcasing the best athletes, but now it's also about the latest tech being used. One story that's captured everyone's heart this year is that of Yusuf Dikec, a 51-year-old air pistol shooter from Turkey. Imagine competing in an event where the tiniest fraction of a second can make the difference between victory and defeat. Without any fancy gear or high-tech gadgets, Yusuf won a silver medal. While most athletes rely on cutting-edge technology to gain an edge, Yusuf did it with just his skill and determination. This achievement has sparked a conversation about the true spirit of sports and how much technology should influence sports. And speaking of technology, while everyone's talking about the latest trend in AI like Search GPT, our host will also share insights on how this new tool is changing the way we search for and interact with information. So don't miss it!
Jasmin Paris, mother, clinical academic, small animal vet, teacher, AND ultramarathon runner, joins James Poulos to discuss how she does it all. After being the first woman ever to finish the Barkley Marathons, a 100-mile ultramarathon, she explains how she prepared for the 60-hour race. Paris is the epitome of Olympic spirit without being an Olympic athlete. She talks about the intense training needed for a race that spans multiple days and how she got started running as child. Paris explains how running is a much-needed break from the pressures of society and how she is planning to raise her kids to appreciate nature and the outdoors. Her career as a champion in ultramarathon running, fell running, and sky running led her to winning multiple titles including the Spine Race while also balancing the pressures of being a clinical academic and mother. The French government has prohibited French athletes from wearing religious garb while competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. As such, French athletes who wish to wear religious garb are forced to choose between adhering to their sincerely held religious beliefs and competing at the highest level of sport. This tight regulation of religious expression is not unusual in France, where the government has enacted similarly strict restrictions on wearing religious garb in public spaces. France has also seen a proliferation of antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred, as well as governmental anti-cult efforts negatively impacting religious organizations. On today's episode of the USCIRF Spotlight Podcast, Supervisory Policy Analyst Scott Weiner and Researcher Luke Wilson discuss the French government's worrying restrictions on wearing religious garb in the public sphere. Ahead of the Olympic Games there is always some discussion of the so-called "Olympic Spirit." This is a spirit of fair play and virtuous competition allegedly inherited from the ancient Greeks. But, a close look at the ancient Olympics and what you discover is that "sportsmanship" was in short supply. The Greeks had a "conquer or die" mentality at ancient Olympia. The most celebrated athletes were those who had sacrificed their lives for a taste of victory. Few batted an eye when athletes died during the competition. On top of that the rowdy festival that accompanied the games could be just as crass and commercial as any modern Olympics. How many Olympic ideals did we really inherit from the ancients? Tune- in and find out how some dudes named The Camel of Alexandria, Mr. Digits, and The Sprinkler all play a role in the story.

Becoming Your Best | The Principles of Highly Successful Leaders
As Beijing hosts the 2022 Olympic Winter Games, feeling the Olympic spirit hovering around is inevitable. The athletes who spend four years training to compete for a couple of minutes, in some cases just seconds, are, at minimum, inspiring. The phrase "Citius, Altius, Fortius" pronounced by the Dominican priest Henri Didon before a school competition in 1881 was adopted by the games and slowly but surely, turned into an Olympic symbol, just like the Olympic flame and the Olympic rings. Citius, Altius, Fortius; faster, higher, stronger. The phrase sums up the Olympic spirit, and it is as inspiring as the athletes themselves. It pushes us to always give our best, work consciously and consistently to achieve our goals, and never surrender.Today's episode is about pouring the Olympic spirit into our personal and professional lives. We travel back to 2002 when the Tabernacle Choir performed John Williams' "Call of the champions" during the Winter Olympics to listen to its inspiring sound and take a moment to nurture our most profound desires of becoming our best. We also go through three of the most significant lessons we can learn from the Olympics and explore how to translate them into our lives. In addition, we remember two stories from the Olympic Games, Derek Redmond's heartbreaking ending in 1992 in Barcelona, and one of the greatest swimming comebacks of all time in Beijing, in 2008, when the US team conquered gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.Tune in to Episode 316 and let the deep desire of overcoming obstacles and working every day to be your best version invade your life.In This Episode, You Will Learn:What can "Citius, Altius, Fortius" represent in our lives (4:03) Tabernacle Choir plays John Williams' "Call of the champions" (5:57) The three main lessons we can get from the Olympics (11:10) The story of Derek Redmond's 400 meters race (15:10) Jason Lezak and the greatest swimming comebacks of all time (19:18) Resources: The Tabernacle Choir's Olympic Opening Ceremony Connection Book: Malcolm Gladwell - Outliers: The Story of Success Derek Redmond's Emotional Olympic Story - Barcelona 1992 Olympics Beijing 2008 - The greatest swimming comeback of all time? On this edition of Extra we are burning up the airwaves with a comedic road trip, some Miami heat, the Olympic Spirit and a remake of a 90's classic. First up its the dvd review Moon Point (courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment) a new Canadian Independant comedy where love is the destination in this quirky road trip movie, Then it's back to Miami with the dvd review of Burn Notice Season 5 (courtesy of Fox Home Video) where Michael Weston fights more bad guys with lots of explosions and excitement. I embrace the Olympic spirit with the blu-ray review of the classic Chariots of Fire (courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Video) as athletes compete in the 1924 games to iconic music. It's another Hollywood remake with the movie review of Total Recall (2012) as Colin Farrel stars in thia new version of the 1990 Arnie classic. Music for this episode features the songs Carnivale by Kelcy Mae, Too Much Too Young Too Fast by Airbourne and Raining in Your Mind by Club Bob, they can all be found at www.famemusic.com. Other instrumental music is by the band Mr. Burns (www.mrburnsmusic.com). As always your comments and suggestions are welcome.

The Ancient Olympic Games where part of a festival, where fairness and athleticism where considered sacred. For over twelve hundred years the games were played in the Athenian city of Olympia and served as a cultural event to promote trade, commerce and diplomacy. The athlete was respected and set powerful examples for all who came to watch them compete. Their stories became the part of an ancient legend that inspired the modern games to revive the Olympic Spirit. We owe this spirit, this sense of peaceful competition and international friendship to those who created the ancient Olympic Games and set forth a precedent that has been reinforced through history.
