PREVIEW. The Crisis of AI Literacy: Protecting Vulnerable Communities from Misusing Chatbots. Kevin Frazier discusses the dangers of young people misusing AI chatbots due to a significant lack of public awareness and basic AI literacy. Designers assume users know chatbots are merely objectification and optimization, not real opinions or people. Frazier stresses the need for educating consumers on the best and improper uses of these tools for responsible innovation. 1951
PREVIEW. Weightlessness Effects on Human Vision and Mars Travel Implications. Bob Zimmerman discusses a NASA study regarding the profound effect of weightlessness on the human eye. The study, looking at 28 individuals from long ISS missions, found about half had vision problems because the eye flattens in weightlessness. Though previous studies noted bone and cardiovascular issues, this new discovery found that women had less of this specific problem than men. Mitigating these effects is required for Mars travel. PREVIEW. US Operations Near Venezuela and Strategic Deception. General Blaine Holt discusses US operations near Venezuela concerning the unacceptable Maduro dictatorship. Holt suggests the highly visible fleet and air power might be a distraction for the regime, which expects a predictable Bay of Pigs-type assault force. President Trump is likely avoiding a "wash, rinse, repeat plan," indicating the "pointy edge of the spear" they are watching is probably not the thing that will get them.
PREVIEW. Canada-China Trade Talks and EV Security Concerns. Charles Burton discusses Canada-China trade talks (Carney/Xi) post-APEC concerning resuming and enhancing trade. Concerns include China exporting thousands of EVs, potentially overwhelming domestic industries and acting as security threats. Canada hopes China will manufacture EVs locally to offset Canadian auto job losses, but Burton is skeptical of this strategy and considers the Canadian government ill-advised.
PREVIEW. Return to Escalation: Monitoring China's Promise to Purchase American Soybeans. Jack Burnham discusses the muted respect/ceasefire between President Trump and General Secretary Xi Jinping following their meeting in Seoul. Burnham suggests a return to escalation is likely, similar to past talks, if either side perceives a competitive step. A critical trigger point to monitor is China's fulfillment of promises to purchase American agricultural commodities, such as soybeans. 1908 HANKOU
PREVIEW. The Risks of AI Feedback Loops: Why Feeding Grok Its Own Output Causes Insanity. Spencer Klavan details interactions with the Grok chatbot, explaining that it learns and improves by receiving human input. Chatbots often end answers with questions to encourage user responses, which serve as training data. Critically, Klavan notes that if Grok's own output is fed back into the system instead of new human output, the machine actually "goes insane." 11963

PREVIEW. International Pressure Campaign as Alternative to Military Action in Venezuela. Mary Kissel discusses options beyond kinetic military force for dealing with Maduro in Venezuela. She favors an international pressure campaign, like maximum pressure to cut off funds and banking, as politically less risky. Weakening the Venezuelan regime also demonstrates to nations like China, Russia, and Iran that the US opposes their presence in its backyard. 1950 TRINIDAD & TOBAGAO
PREVIEW. Nuclear Testing Remarks and NNSA Budget Cuts. Jeff McCausland discusses the President's ambiguous remarks on nuclear testing, noting the President and Secretary of Defense seem to misunderstand nuclear strategy. Immediate warhead testing is impossible because the responsible agency, NNSA, lacks staff due to budget cuts. A return to testing would ultimately benefit adversaries expanding their arsenal, like Russia and China. 1940 Retry
PREVIEW. Political Frustration Fuels Insurgent Movements Across the Spectrum. Joseph Sternberg explains that frustrated voters in Europe and the United States are using a metaphorical "sledgehammer" to break apart the established political process. This frustration generates insurgent movements on both the left (like Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the Squad) and the right (like Donald Trump). Conservatives should not presume they will always benefit from this political upheaval. IL DUCE 1923 Retry
PREVIEW. Tariff Impact Absorbed by Corporate Pandemic Profits. Elizabeth Peek recounts the Wall Street Journal's speculation that new tariffs have not yet damaged the American economy because big companies are absorbing the costs. This absorption is possible because these companies already "fattened their margins" by jacking up prices during the pandemic. Companies are also rapidly sourcing imports from places less impacted by tariffs.
PREVIEW. Far Right-Wing Parties and Russian Interference in Europe. Judy Dempsey observes that far right-wing parties often rise by protesting the status quo but are quickly rejected in power due to unacceptable governance. Russia is identified as a well-known "outside bad actor" attempting to destabilize EU countries by influencing these anti-EU, anti-NATO groups via social media and cyberattacks. Leaders must focus on serving citizens. 1870 COMMUNARD
PREVIEW. The Monarchy's Trouble with Spares. Gregory Copley discusses the monarchy's inherent troubles with "spares," specifically second sons like Prince Andrew and Prince Harry. Historically, this issue was sometimes settled violently, referencing the Roman Empire. Today, these spares, lacking training beyond a backup role, can become petulant, losing their ability to discern duty, unlike those further down the chain, such as Princess Anne. JAMES I

I had the opportunity to sit with down with Nick McWhirter or SHM Architects to explore the nuances of transitional design, the delicate dance between modern and traditional elements, and the intentionality behind every architectural choice. From furniture-driven layouts to aspirational lighting strategies, Nick shares the thought process, research, and we discuss philosophy that transform houses into harmonious, living machines. Listeners will gain insight into how design, balance, and playfulness converge to create both beauty and functionality in contemporary residential architecture. Designer Resources Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home. Where excellence meets expertise. Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! TimberTech - Real wood beauty without the upkeep LOME-AI.com, simple, inexpensive, text to video harnessing the power of AI to grow your firm, beautifully. What makes a home truly exceptional isn't just the materials or the finishes—it's the careful orchestration of space, light, and style. In this episode, Nick breaks down his approach to transitional design, revealing how subtle choices like shutter placement, dormer adjustments, or color balance can shift a home's aesthetic from modern to traditional. The conversation spans everything from lighting plans and hidden technology to furniture-first design principles and the philosophy behind architecture as a living, breathing machine. Of course, that idea comes from Le Corbusier and his thoughts on this very subject. We also discuss the role of photography, the tension between realism and aspirational imagery, and the evolving vernacular of form and function in modern homes. This episode is a masterclass in thoughtful, intentional, and style-agnostic design. Topics and Ideas Introduction & Context Welcome and setup: Exploring transitional design Nick's philosophy: Style agnostic but deeply researched Transitional Design: Modern vs. Traditional Subtle moves: Shutters, dormers, cut stone, and symmetry Playfulness in design: How small details create balance Color palette: Black-and-white schemes as intentional high-contrast statements Design Process & Interior Layouts Inside-out approach: Furniture-driven architecture Achieving balanced asymmetry Experimentation and editing: Knowing when less is more Lighting as a Core Component Invisible vs. visible fixtures: Philosophy of recessed lighting Lighting as both function and art Integration with technology: Wi-Fi, AV, and smart home systems Photography, Aspirational Design & Reality Balancing reality and idealized imagery in marketing Photoshop as a tool to highlight design intent How photography conveys quality of light, space, and atmosphere Form Follows Function & Architectural Philosophy Homes as “machines for living” The role of beauty and human experience in architecture Historical perspective: Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, and modern vernacular Outdoor Spaces & Technology Integration Creative solutions: Two TVs on a patio LED walls and emerging tech as part of design storytelling Closing Thoughts & Personal Insights The freedom in design: Few right or wrong answers Nick's passion for music, smoked meats, and lifestyle influence Preview of future conversations and projects Thank you, Nick for the time and conversation. PREVIEW. The Domestic and Foreign Ambitions of Syria's al-Sharaa. Ahmad Sharawi describes the two faces of al-Sharaa, Syria's leader. Externally, al-Sharaa seeks international legitimacy, investment, and full sanctions relief via diplomatic visits. Domestically, he faces resistance; there have been two massacres, and groups like the Druze, Kurds, and coastal residents demand separation and autonomy.
PREVIEW. The Possibility of a Tale of Two Gazas. David Daoud speaks with John Batchelor about Gaza, now divided with the IDF patrolling one half and Hamas controlling the other. Daoud presents the possibility of a "tale of two Gazas," one destroyed, one rebuilt. The excerpt also mentions a difficult domestic task for al-Sharaa, involving massacres and resistance from Kurds and Druze demanding separation.

PREVIEW. The Continuing Power of Presidential Tariffs. Alan Tonelson discusses the Supreme Court's pending oral arguments concerning the president's "Liberation Day tariffs." Tonelson argues the tariffs are likely to stay, and presidential power will continue. Even if the court strikes down the tariffs under the 1977 statute, the president possesses many other established tariffing authorities under US trade law. Retry
PREVIEW. Russia's New Guided Glide Bomb in Ukraine. John Hardie discusses Russia's new version of a glide bomb used against Ukraine. The weapon, which can be released up to 200 kilometers away, allows Russia to avoid air defenses and inflict damage economically with a sizable warhead. The latest version is the UMPK, strapped to a FAB-500, a 500-kilogram class bomb.
PREVIEW. Naivety in Solving the Gaza Conflict. Husain Haqqani speaks with John Batchelor about the apparent assumption that Gaza is "solved" following a ceasefire signing in Sharm el-Sheikh. Haqqani observes naivety in American negotiators who believe they are fixing the world forever. Gaza's turmoil is noted to have persisted for at least 2,000 years, resisting efforts by historical powers like the Romans.

What happens when addiction talks back—and you answer? Dr. Larry Smith, author of Johnnie and Me: Facing the Voice of Alcohol Within, shares how he personified alcohol as “Johnnie,” survived decades of trauma and dependency, and built a daily plan that's kept him sober since 1999. He also previews his forthcoming novel 2084: The Neuroxone Conspiracy, a medical-thriller riff on Big Pharma, recovery, and personal freedom—making this a raw, hopeful, and deeply human conversation worth hearing. Sponsored by Harford County Living Guest Bio: Dr. Larry Smith is a Canadian chiropractor, author, and recovery advocate who has been sober since September 22, 1999. His memoir Johnnie and Me personifies alcohol as “Johnnie,” the voice that misled him from age 11 until recovery, while his earlier book Embracing the Journey of Recovery opened doors for public speaking and community outreach. A former Ironman triathlete, Larry now writes, speaks, and mentors others in long-term recovery; his upcoming medical-thriller, 2084: The Neuroxone Conspiracy, explores addiction, industry, and choice. Main Topics: · Personifying addiction as “Johnnie” and why naming the voice matters· First drunk at age 11; secrecy, trauma, and trust· Relapse risk and the “daily plan” for long-term recovery (journaling, meditation, meals, exercise, connection, honest feedback)· Meetings and connection: why frequency can change, but community matters· Alcohol plus pills (opiates/benzos): compounding risks and lucky survival· 12 Steps in plain language and alternatives beyond 12-step frameworks· Faith, surrender, and releasing attachment to outcomes· Writing as healing; moving from hiding to radical honesty· Johnnie and Me and Embracing the Journey of Recovery: messages of hope· Preview of 2084: The Neuroxone Conspiracy—a dystopian medical-thriller about recovery, pharma, and mandated treatments Resources mentioned: · Books by guest:· Johnnie and Me: Facing the Voice of Alcohol Within (memoir)· Embracing the Journey oSend us a texthttps://harfordcountyhealth.comSupport the showRate & Review on Apple Podcasts Follow the Conversations with Rich Bennett podcast on Social Media:Facebook – Conversations with Rich Bennett Facebook Group (Join the conversation) – Conversations with Rich Bennett podcast group | FacebookTwitter – Conversations with Rich Bennett Instagram – @conversationswithrichbennettTikTok – CWRB (@conversationsrichbennett) | TikTok Sponsors, Affiliates, and ways we pay the bills:Hosted on BuzzsproutSquadCast Subscribe by Email

Listen to this PREVIEW of the 27th episode of A Woman Robbed, a special bonus series you can hear on the And the Runner-Up Is Patreon exclusive feed! A Woman Robbed is a series in which Kevin is joined by a special guest in discussing women who had significant Oscar buzz heading into the nominations but were ultimately robbed/snubbed/omitted from the Best Actress lineup. In this episode, Kevin speaks with Andrew Carden about two performances from movies we love to watch in the fall season that didn't earn Oscar nominations: Mia Farrow ("Hannah and Her Sisters") and Meryl Streep ("Death Becomes Her"). We discuss their performances, talk about why they came up short, and reveal whether we would have nominated them. You can listen to the full episode of A Woman Robbed by going to patreon.com/andtherunnerupis and contributing at the $5 per month tier.
