In honoring the life and career of late, great producer-director Richard Donner ("Superman," "The Omen," "Lethal Weapon," "The Goonies") Gilbert and Frank present this ENCORE episode from 2018, featuring a fascinating conversation about the importance of on-set teamwork, the eccentricities of Marlon Brando, the singular talent of Rod Serling and the challenge of (faithfully) adapting the Man of Steel for the big screen. Also, Gregory Peck cashes in, Gene Hackman plays hardball, Jackie Gleason bends the elbow and Richard looks back on directing Hollywood's greatest character actors. PLUS: "Inside Moves"! Miguelito Loveless! “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet”! Celebrating Don Rickles! Gilbert auditions for “Scrooged”! And Richard remembers his friend Christopher Reeve! Learn more about your ad choices. For many of the millennial persuasion, Richard Donner is the guy who directed Superman, which in turn introduced us to the great Christopher Reeve. Due to a lot of bullshit that is well-documented elsewhere, he was removed from the sequel and Richard Lester was brought in to take his place as director. That version of the film is the version we all grew up with and for the most part loved. And then The Donner Cut came along and gave us insight into what could have been and the results are...also very damn good. We go into all of this and more so let's not waste another minute.
Episode Number 59: THE OMEN (1976)For this week's episode, in light of the recent death of director Richard Donner (SUPERMAN, THE GOONIES), we decided to cover 1976's THE OMEN. Starring Gregory Peck (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL), Lee Remick (ANATOMY OF A MURDER, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES), and David Warner (TRON, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS).It's all for you, Damien!Let us know your thoughts on THE OMEN at chrisandchristalkmovies@gmail.comWelcome to Chris & Chris Talk Movies. In this podcast, life-long friends Chris Ferry and Chris Huddleston discuss Sci Fi movies (sometimes the best Sci Fi movies, sometimes not), horror movies (occasionally some of the all time best horror movies…often…not), a few of the very best action movies (I think you see where we're going with this), and genre films from their childhood and beyond in this laid-back, rambling, but inviting series!Rated PG for occasional mature language and alcohol consumption.
TVC 546.7: From August 2011: James Christie, author of You're The Director, You Figure It Out: The Life and Films of Richard Donner, takes us behind the scenes of the making of Superman, the 1978 movie directed by Richard Donner that created the modern-day blockbuster superhero motion picture genre. Topics include how Donner saw Superman as a story about what it meant to be an immigrant in America, and the occasional clashes that he had with producers Alexander Salkind and Ilya Salkind during production of the film. Richard Donner passed away on Monday, July 5 at age 91. Want to advertise/sponsor our show? Fatto sta che, personalmente, il film del 1978 di Richard Donner "Superman" non mi ha mai detto alcunché. E cercherò di spiegarvi (e spiegarmi) il perché.

Do these boys know how to party or what? A movie about a spooky kid from the 70s? Quick kids! Put down your cellular phones with your instagrams and tune in to the talkies for this week’s review of The Omen! The film was directed by Richard Donner (Superman, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon) and stars Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mocking Bird, Cape Fear, The Boys from Brazil). Peck plays Robert Thorn, who, while desperate to spare his wife’s feelings, tricks her into believing that Damien is their own son, who actually died shortly after being born. Harvey Spencer Stephens who played Damien, had a very minor acting career after the film, appearing in a TV movie, then having a cameo in the 2006 remake of The Omen as a reporter. With the help of Keith Jennings, played by David Warner (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze, Star Trek VI, Star Trek V, Star Trek TNG, Tron) Thorn tries to discovery what happened to his son, who Damien really is, and how to undo the plot he has been unwittingly complicit in for the past five years. Oh, and we cannot forget Jerry Goldsmith’s Academy Award winning score! This week's Hidden Track is Green Eyes by The Mammoths (https://themammothsmusic.com/; @the_mammoths). Dennis is joined in studio by Ben Mankiewicz of Turner Classic Movies, who talks about his 15 years with the network, and how it took some viewers awhile to warm up to him. He also talks about some of the upcoming guest programmers and special Christmas programming. Ben also talks about his grandfather Herman Mankiewicz who wrote the script for Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane", and shares some of Peter Bogdanovich's recollections of Welles. Ben also discusses the rest of his famous family: his his father Frank Mankiewicz work as campaign director for George McGovern's 1972 presidential run, his uncle Tony Mankiewicz who wrote three James Bond films, the first two Richard Donner "Superman" films and created the television series "Hart to Hart" and Joe Mankiewicz getting paid a million dollars for "Cleopatra" but wanting his name taken off of it all the same. This leads to a Dennis and Ben discussing how they think that film is underrated. They also talk about the work of Howard Hawks, why Dean Martin was the greatest talk show guest, and some of the great output from the studio system. He also talks about growing up an A's fan in Washington DC and what it was like for him to see a game in Oakland for the first time.

Great Ceasar's Ghost! It's an all Superman episode! We're joined by Superman superfan Jeff Moriarty to chat about the Man of Steel. We're covering the montage sequence of Superman performing heroic deeds, but does it really feel heroic? Why doesn't Superman seem to be enjoying this? Do we really need a montage? We compare this Superman to previous versions, including Man of Steel, Superman Returns and the original Richard Donner Superman films. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
On this illustrious 44th episode (first part) of the Wages of Cinema, we discuss at the top of the show some possible idea for future episodes from emails we received; at 9:20 there's some time to talk about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney and Gareth Edwards' trip into an anthology series which gets a trailer; at 26:20 we then get into a talk about the Richard Donner Superman, which Andrew watched for the first time, and it ends up coming back to the g-ddamn Batman v Superman; and at 44:30 Jack talks some movies he's seen in the past week. email us at wagesofcinema@gmail.com facebook.com/wagesofcinema twitter.com/wagesofcinema instagram.com/wagesofcinema (music from John Williams' Superman theme used under fair use; other tracks are Vivaldi and Duke Ellington, public domain)
This episode starts with a rant about X-Men 3 - don't worry, it makes sense. The gang has many complex emotions about SUPERMAN RETURNS (2006), Bryan Singer's 'soft sequel' to the Richard Donner Superman movies. This movie is like HULK in that it's considered a 'failure' but it's not a terrible movie. That said, there is a lot of "wig horror" and there's an opening suggestion of Lex Luthor's bedroom proclivities that has Kyle in a tizzy. Follow us on FB and Twitter! @TCApod
