Check out their upcoming event, Entrepreneurs Summit 2025.Click here to check out our free Founders Agreement masterclass, with Melanie Gabriel from Yokoy, Christof Roduner from Scandit, and Viviana Gropengiesser from Talent Kick.About Ronnie Zemp:Ronnie Zemp is a serial entrepreneur, startup investor and the current president of EO Zurich. He holds an MBA from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Throughout his career, he has (co-)founded the following companies: RZ Capital AG, bitConsult, notime AG (exited to Swiss Post), OSUISSE AG, RZ Real Estate GmbH, and Tears of Bacchus AG.During his chat with Silvan, Ronnie talked about the most difficult aspects of being a startup founder. He stressed the loneliness of being an entrepreneur: when you're your own boss, you're the ultimate decision marker, responsible for hundreds of employees, and this can really cause quite a bit of anxiety, and even insomnia. When Ronnie sold notime to Swiss Post, he felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He credits EO for relieving this sense of loneliness by introducing him to many people who have walked the same path.Ronnie also warned founders not to see exits as the end-all, be-all of entrepreneurship. They happen, sometimes, yes, but not always, and building a cash-generating company that pays dividends is also a great (or perhaps an even better) goal for which to strive.Ronnie feels it's natural for founders to require a long time after an exit to be ready to build a startup again, not only because at that point they can financially afford to be picky, but also because having achieved a successful exit makes them wary of damaging their reputation. There's also a point to be made about how age makes people more risk-averse. Ronnie's life was made more complicated by the fact that he lost 4 very close people within the span of 3 months, which really made him reflect about who he is and what he thinks is the meaning of life. Due to all his success, Ronnie feels a social responsibility to give back: he has financed the university studies of several students from abroad, and has spent a great deal of time supporting those closest to him, namely the daughter of his best friend, who was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 16 years old.The cover portrait was edited by www.smartportrait.io‍Don't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. Timestamps: 1:22 - Wanting to be a VC 5:08 - Investing in B2B SaaS 8:32 - Getting more Swiss VC money 15:42 - Making Switzerland more startup-friendly 20:28 - Where the Swiss ecosystem is going About Olivier Laplace: Olivier Laplace has been a partner at the VC fund VI Partners since early 2022. He previously worked as head of corporate VC at Swiss Post and founded a company called Balumpa, which provided users a geo-localized social network. Throughout the years, his investor portfolio has included companies like TestingTime, Beekeeper and guuruu. At VI partners Olivier mostly invests in B2B SaaS. His typical day as a VC includes: - 2-3 phone calls with new potential companies - 2-3 calls with potential co-investors - A few random calls, like helping portfolio companies with day-to-day issues A common complaint within the Swiss ecosystem is that there isn't enough gross capital. Olivier thinks this should be solved in two ways: - Swiss pension funds need to start investing in VC. There's 1 trillion CHF in the Swiss pension fund system. Nowadays 1% of that (10B) goes into private equity, but very international private equity, and mostly into the buyouts. - Building innovation in-house might not be the best way to do it anymore, so Swiss corporations need to buy out more startups. Despite popular perception, IPOs are very rare ends to the startup journey — it's mostly tradesales. Memorable Quotes: "In 15 years of work experience, I changed careers about 5 times — these changes were always based on opportunities." He starts with the Autonomous Database. Steve says quarter by quarter it’s growing by 100% and thousands of customers are running on it. It eliminates human error and it’s self-driving, self-securing, and self-repairing.Steve says with machine learning and other technologies, you don’t need a room full of PhDs to figure it out. Oracle has done the hard work for you so you can focus on what matters most for your company. He says it’s all about the perimeter and protecting the network. But he says users are the new perimeter and 70% of breaches are still happening internally to a company, and if that data isn’t encrypted – which was the case with one financial institution – you can lose a hundred million records because of internal malpractice. Steve says these breaches wouldn’t have happened on Oracle’s watch: they would have been self-patched. He goes on to say Oracle’s adding a new data center every day. In the last six months, it’s been Seoul, Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Zurich, Sydney and three DOD data center regions. Steve talks about how Oracle Cloud’s ERP is used by some of the biggest companies in the world – like Biogen, Cisco, MGM, Walgreens, and Swiss Post. They are all companies that are using Autonomous and Gen 2 together. He says it’s exciting to go into 2020 with this head of steam around Autonomous – and Steve Miranda, who is executive vice president, applications development – is leading the charge. Swiss Post, in association with Matternet, had completed nearly 3,000 flights. However, recently, they experienced their second drone crash. While the parachute safety system was deployed, the tether was cut off by the spinning propeller. Fortunately, a crisis was averted as the drone crashed barely 50 feet from a school playground. This incident certainly highlights the need for better parachute safety systems. Regular ADU listeners might recall our past show, "Parachute for Drone | Will Flying Drone over People Become Possible in Future?". In this show, we had highlighted why ballistic parachutes are necessary for a 100% fail-safe solution. Everdrone completes its First Drone Delivery using GPS-Free Drones Our next story is also about drone delivery services, albeit an encouraging one. A Swedish company, Everdrone has completed its first drone delivery by transporting medical packages between two hospitals. Uniquely enough, GPS-free drones equipped with ADS-B receivers were used for this job. DJI's New FPV Transmission System and Osmo Mobile 3 Next, we move on to some of the latest and most exciting DJI News. DJI has launched its all-new Digital FPV Transmission System. This new system comes with higher latency, which results in a more detailed and sharper view. Is DJI gearing up to launch an FPV drone next? DJI has also made an FCC filing for the Osmo Mobile 3. Initial reports reveal that the new Osmo Mobile 3 will be lighter, have a foldable design, and come with a USB-C connection. What is the Reason Behind Rising Industrial Drone Uses? “It’s the quality of the questions that tell my if [entrepreneurs] are going to make it or not.” - Aike Festini This episode brings us together with Aike Festini from LuckaBox, a startup that enables retailers to send their products to end customers via flexible delivery options. The LuckaBox team pays great attention to being green and will save over 12 tonnes of Co2 within the next five years, delivering goods by bike whenever possible. Aike and I met at a startup workshop years ago, when the LuckaBox idea was still in its infancy. When I recently asked her if there was one crazy thing she believed that many others didn’t, her answer was truly inspiring and motivating: “I'm deeply convinced that life is a playground to be enjoyed to the last bit. Life is not supposed to be hard. Work is supposed to motivate and inspire you to your core. Find your mojo - everything else: love, joy and success, will follow.” I loved having Aike on the show and asking her all of my burning questions about how she turned her initial idea into what it is today, how she acquired her first customers, her daunting and sometimes hurtful experience with investors, and so much more! I’m super excited to share this episode with you today, enjoy! IF YOU LIKED THIS EPISODE, GIVE US A FIVE STAR REVIEW ON APPLE PODCAST. We covered the following topics: Problem - Solution Fit What was the initial idea and how did they test that there were people with a problem / need for it? Why did it not work out, and what did they do after they realized that? How did they know in which direction to go? How did they identify that this was the perfect customer for them? Customer Acquisition: How did they acquire their first customers? Pricing How did they decide on their prices? How did the competition with the Swiss Post impact their pricing? Investors What learning did she have from her first experience with investors? Why does she think every entrepreneur needs a good lawyer? Show #440   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 11th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   U.S. LAWMAKERS MAKE BIG PUSH TO FURTHER EXPAND EV TAX CREDIT "A conglomeration of “bipartisan” U.S. lawmakers want to extend the current federal EV tax credit to 400,000 cars produced. Currently, the credit begins to “sunset” at 200k sold. This current situation works to hinder automakers like Tesla and GM that have worked hard to produce and promote EV adoption. Meanwhile, it gives those that have been slow to adopt a huge and arguably unfair edge. says InsideEVs today: "This new bill — the “Driving America Forward Act” — would work to add an additional 400k EVs on top of each current automaker’s 200k on the previous program. However, it would then lessen the phase-out period to nine months instead of 12-15. Still, the bill would allow hardcore players like Tesla, GM, and even Nissan to take advantage during a time that — in the current situation — other automakers are now just catching up."   kdawg says: "Instead of just adding 400K per manufacturer, they should have set an overall limit for the total plugins sold."   The Reuters report which broke the news said: "GM and Tesla shares rose on Reuters report that the bill would be introduced. Tesla shares recently traded up nearly 1 percent, while GM was up 0.2 percent. The proposal has strong backing from automakers, environmental groups and others, but will face opposition. Last month, the White House proposed immediately eliminating the $7,500 tax credit, a move it said would save the U.S. government $2.5 billion over a decade. Senator John Barrasso, a Republican who chairs the Environment and Public Works Committee, in February proposed legislation to end the credit and impose a highway user fee on EVs to pay for road repairs."   https://insideevs.com/u-s-lawmakers-bill-boost-ev-tax-credits/   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-electric-taxcredit-exclusive/exclusive-u-s-lawmakers-introduce-bill-to-boost-electric-car-tax-credits-idUSKCN1RM1NG   TESLA MODEL 3 BECOMES #1 BEST-SELLING CAR IN SWITZERLAND IN MARCH, BAR NONE "Sales reports from Switzerland have revealed that the Tesla Model 3 was the country’s #1 best-selling car in March 2019, bar none. This marked the first time that an all-electric vehicle was able to top the country’s sales charts, which include vehicles powered by an internal combustion engine." says Simon at Teslarati: "Tesla sold 1,094 units of the Model 3 in Switzerland last month, as indicated by the numbers of sales statistics site Auto Schweiz. The Model 3’s figures were around 27% higher than the second-ranking vehicle in the country, the widely popular Skoda Octavia, which sold 801 units in March. The Model 3’s feat represented significant milestones for the Silicon Valley-based automaker, as it was able to achieve a record market share of 4.3% in Switzerland’s auto market. These are impressive figures, especially since deliveries of the Tesla Model 3 only started in February."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-best-selling-car-switzerland/   TESLA MODEL S ROAMER MOTORHOME IS THE EV CAMPER OF THE FUTURE InsideEVs has details on a Tesla frankenstein motorhome: "The mastermind behind this project is a man named Travis Rabenberg. You might expect this build to incorporate Tesla’s Model X SUV, but it’s actually based on the Model S P90D. Rabenberg calls it the Tesla Roamer, and as you can see, it deletes the sedan’s rear haunches for a small living space that has a pop-up roof, a bed, and provisions for water to operate a sink and toilet also included. And since you can’t have an electric motorhome with solar power, the Tesla Roamer incorporates a solar panel with the capability of generating 1,000 watts of juice."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-s-roamer-motorhome-ev-camper/   CHINA EV STARTUP BORDRIN SKIPS FLASH, KEEPS REAL-CAR FOCUS "Chinese electric vehicle makers have proliferated in recent years, with dozens sketching ambitious plans to enter the market. Some of the top competitors have spent millions showcasing concepts at places such as CES to ensure they stand out amid a crowded field. Bordrin Motor Corp., on the other hand, has been content to keep quiet." says Autmotive News China: "Since its founding in 2016 by former Ford senior engineer Ximing Huang, Bordrin has concentrated on building real cars. The results of these first efforts will soon be seen by outsiders for the first time. This week, the company will unveil its first production model, the B31 SUV, along with a premium-segment concept that Lavine says is "pretty damn feasible." The debuts will take place Thursday, April 11, at a company event that precedes the Shanghai auto show, where the public will see them starting April 16."   http://www.autonewschina.com/en/article.asp?id=18872   HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC SEES MSRP SPIKE AFTER CHEVY BOLT INCENTIVE DROPS "This isn’t about dealer price gouging, but instead, Hyundai quietly raised the Kona Electric’s official starting price." according to Steven Loveday at INsideEVs.com: "Fortunately, the Hyundai Kona Electric’s new MSRP is only up by $500. It may make no difference in the end, since dealers set prices and some are already charging a premium for the popular vehicle. However, it could mean that the Kona Electric will become even more expensive. This quiet move by Hyundai comes on the heels of GM’s federal EV tax credit halving."   https://insideevs.com/hyundai-kona-ev-msrp-spike/   AUSTRIAN AND SWISS POSTAL SERVICES PLEDGE TO GO 100% EV BY 2030 "National postal companies Swiss Post and Austrian Post have committed to fully electrifying their delivery fleets by 2030. The announcement comes as they join EV100, an EV initiative led by non-profit The Climate Group." reports Ryan Austin for ChargedEVs: "To join EV100, companies must make public commitments to integrate EVs into their service fleets or install EV chargers on premises for staff and customers. As part of its pledge, Austrian Post is set to switch more than 9,000 vehicles to electric drive. Post CH (a subsidiary of Swiss Post) said it will switch more than 10,000 vehicles to electric as part of its EV100 pledge. The company has already electrified its mail delivery fleet of 6,000 three-wheeled vehicles. It now plans to switch 4,600 delivery vans (up to 3.5 tons) and 180 service vehicles to EVs by 2030."   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/austrian-and-swiss-postal-services-pledge-to-go-100-ev-by-2030/   INFINITI TO LAUNCH FIRST ELECTRIC CAR, TO BE MADE IN CHINA And finally a Reuters report on Autoblog today: "The first electric car for Nissan's premium brand Infiniti will be a sporty sedan produced in China, the Japanese carmaker said in a statement viewed by Reuters ahead of a public announcement expected as soon as Wednesday. The vehicle would hit the market in around three years, and consumers would get a taste when the company unveils a concept car, dubbed the Qs Inspiration electric sedan, at the Shanghai auto show later this week, Nissan officials said. Brand officials have said that from 2021 every Infiniti model launched will be either an all-electric car or so-called "e-Power" hybrids, underlining Nissan's previously announced plan to make Infiniti primarily an electrified offering."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/04/10/infiniti-electric-car-china-qs-concept/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
