"I think making two Olympics was easier than trying to figure out what I want to do now." Jourdan Delacruz has been competing as a weightlifter for ten years, from training as a highschooler at the US Olympic Training Center, to multiple international competitions, to both the Toyko and Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, she completed her degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, on her way to becoming a registered dietitian with the hopes of working with athletes like herself.  We caught up with Jourdan at the end of 2024, as an Olympic year winds down and she reflects on everything she's accomplished to date. She's in a time of transition, without clear next steps, but excited about a variety of possibilities. We loved hearing more about her training, competitions, Olympic experiences, and how she's already supporting athletes with nutrition resources via HerAthlete.  Follow Jourdan @herathlete on Instagram.  Lane 9 is working to improve the menstrual health of female-bodied athletes at all levels of sport and through various seasons of life. So you're nervous about the hundreds of different post-grad paths you can walk down, right? Questions like: Which path do I take? How do I go to the ‘next level'? What if I fail? What if I need to pivot?  All of the above are common thoughts racing through the minds of college-aged girls. Thankfully, todays conversation is SURE to give your mind the peace it's looking for! This week, I'm chatting with Brianna Glenn. Brianna is a globally ranked American long jumper, having competed as a professional athlete following graduation from the University of Arizona. After spending nearly all of her twenties competing, she knew it was time to shake things up. Today, she's the owner + founder of Milk + Honey Travels, where she plans travel for other wanderlusty souls and gets to keep traveling the world as a part of her job description.  Brianna loves helping people. At the root of it all, helping people is where her heart is at. Which is why I know something in our conversation today will help YOU.  You'll hear us discuss: The mindset shift Brianna experienced in college that took her to an olympic level of competion.  Brianna's take on what failure truly is, and why she's such a believer in the 'life pivot.' Advice Brianna would give to her younger self, like throwing out your timeline or asking yourself the right questions in life, for example. I just know there is something in here for YOU, sister. And I can't wait for you to listen in. About Brianna: Brianna is a globally ranked American long jumper. She's traveled and competed around the world — like in the 2002 World Cup, 2006 World Athletics Final, and her personal best jump was at the US Olympic Training Center in 2011. Today, she's kept travel as part of her job description as the owner + founder of Milk + Honey Travels. She is a wife, a mom, a thought-leader, a friend, and more! Disclaimer: She would NOT self-describe as a model despite having been featured in Sports Illustrated for a Budweiser campaign — you'll hear us laugh about that in our convo! Meniscus injuries can have a significant impact on your ability to walk, run and train consistently. Although this injury is less common for runners, understanding management and treatment is essential for long term health and durability. Dr. Kevin Stone graduated from Harvard and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. His clinical work focuses on keeping people active in the sports they love, and he has served a wide array of athletic groups including the US Ski Team, multiple ballet companies, and the US Olympic Training Center. In addition to his work as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Stone is an innovator in the field. Some of his inventions include a glucosamine beverage, a collagen meniscus implant, and the three-tunnel technique of meniscus transplantation, and he has been issued approximately 50 US patents for his work. If you're looking for expertise on meniscus injuries, Dr. Stone is at the top of his field. Our discussion today will give you a better understanding of this type of injury, including: Understanding the meniscus and what it means to have a meniscus injury Are meniscus injuries a concern for runners? The most common causes of meniscus injuries How to prevent a meniscus injury (it's probably not what you think!) The importance of good mechanics in injury prevention Why you need to investigate your doctor's bias for treatment Meniscus injury treatment options and the recovery process Hopefully you will never be faced with a meniscus injury, but if so this podcast will help you get back on track to running pain free. Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. This month, we're bringing you the ySUMMIT talks on the podcast! You'll hear from speakers who spoke to students who attended the March for Life in Washington, D.C. in January 2023.This first episode features Laura, whose talk was split into two parts. One about doing life our own way, and one about doing like God's way (this episode is a cohesive blend of both her talks!). The gist of what she hits on is why it is so important to think deeply and rely on God's guidance about the choices we make; without the guidance of God and the Holy Spirit in our lives, we wander into unhealthy relationships, selfish behaviors, and because of our sin nature we make choices that end up harming us more than benefiting us. The second part of her talk features the "redemption" of leaning into relationships the way God would call us to AND practical ways to do this.  Laura was the Director of the Pittsburgh Essential Speakers program at Women's Choice Network, Pittsburgh, PA before the COVID-19 pandemic. To keep getting the “Healthy Relationship” message out to teens during COVID, she authored the video curriculum REAL TALK, which is a video series designed to equip young people with the skills to combat relationship challenges they face in adolescence. She is a native Pittsburgher, graduated with a BS in Psychology/Business from Penn State University, and in her more ‘youthful' days, she was a resident archery athlete at the US Olympic Training Center in CO, made the USA World Archery Team, National Team, and was Archery's Athlete Representative to the US Olympic Committee. After raising two daughters and working in the family manufacturing representative business, she continues to be active in her church and follows closely the sexual challenges teens face in today's culture. Her passion for the abundant life that Christ calls us to is evident in who she is AND the work that she does. In this week's episode, we talk about Tokyo 2020 still being Tokyo 2020 in 2021, why epic moments in Olympic swimming like Michael Phelps eight gold medals in the 2008 Bejing games. Erik also worked at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and has seen many of these swimmers up close and personal during training and heard some of the legendary coaches like Bob Bowman coach his swimmers while being paid on the job. We also get into a discussion about how it's funny that lifeguards are on duty for Olympic swimmers practicing and competing, but water safety is a very serious issue with thousands of people drowning or nearly drowning every year. Living in the south where almost everyone has a pool it's very easy for kids to sneak away and accidentally fall in or have a medical emergency in the pool, so make sure you and your kids take appropriate swimming lessons and have tarps and gates in place so drowning accidents do not occur. We close out the show trading stories about the antics of high school and college which helped Kate understand more of why D.J. is the way he is. You might know Anthony Famiglietti (nicknamed “Fam”) as the two-time Olympian in the steeplechase with an aggressive, front-running style on the track. You may not know his other side as the quiet, introverted artist who sees the world a little different than the rest of us, including a unique perspective on the world of clean sport. In this episode with Kara, Shanna, and Chris, we get to meet both sides of him, Anthony and Fam, the artist and the athlete. Anthony grew up on Long Island and was first introduced to the world of sport with a skateboard on his feet, learning on his homemade half pipe to enjoy the journey toward a goal even through failure. He came to running in high school through a few mentors in his life who both died tragically. Running then became an outlet for his grief as well as a pure way to honor those who had believed in him. Not recruited heavily in high school, Anthony had to win the 3200m at the state meet to earn a scholarship to Appalachian State in his final high school race. Anthony tells us how he discovered and fell in love with the steeplechase at Appalachian State and why he had to transfer to Tennessee in order to truly pursue the event. Once at Tennessee, he met the great US distance runner Todd Williams, discovered that you could make a living as a pro runner, and set his sights on beating Todd’s times and making an Olympic team. From there, the conversation turns to doping and clean sport as Anthony asks us the question: “what is doping?” He then shares his own experiences being introduced to the gray areas of cheating from a place you might not expect – a doctor associated with the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. These experiences have informed his art including his interpretation of the Alberto Salazar case via a piece called “Death of Saladbar,” in which Kara is also depicted for her role as truth teller. Anthony understands the impact of the system but still puts the responsibility for the fight for clean sport on the athlete who he believes should be protecting the sanctity of their pursuit at all costs. We appreciate his perspective and wish all athletes had the same mentality.

Markel. *Professor Paul* Hello, welcome back to Morning Mindset. Let's strap in, strap on, let's get ready to do this. Alright, I hope you have a hot tasty beverage to sip or if you're driving your car. Just put your hands at 10 and 2 and look at the road, and listen if you're on the treadmill, that's cool too. Give me another five minutes. - Alright or 10 minutes. How's that sound? Give me the 10 minutes. Let's take a look at the "You Can't" Crowd. The "You Can't" Crowd, right before I sat down to record this before I entered the studio closed the door and turned on the black carbon steel microphones. I was reading an article online. I came across this article because someone suggested it to me. I saw the title and thought yeah, that'd be a good thing. I started reading it and it was full of good news. Basically, it was how it was talking about tourniquets and I don't want to get too far into that. - But it was a very positive article. Let's just say it was a positive article , and like most online articles and we do this because of SEO and because of system is sharing and you know, all that mumbo jumbo to get people to look at stuff, and I know why it is that people allow comments at the end of their articles online and understand that, whether I agree with it or not, I understand. - So in my perspective from my perspective and I think most people's perspective. It was a very positive article, right it wasn't you can't you shouldn't this is bad. This is wrong. Whatever was actually this is what we're doing and this is good and it's saving people's lives people's lives are being saved because of this, right? - Very first comment in the comments is Negative Nelly. Negative, you know, I don't know what. Norman I guess, an N-word. Negative Nancy, Negative Norman. So, Norman jumps in and writes a whole paragraph about how you people don't understand and blah blah blah and you can't and you shouldn't and you're going to get sued and then out of that. - Basically, the this is why you shouldn't do what's right regardless of the facts and the article I was reading it was it was in a medical journal and it was about a study that was conducted and so on and so forth. So regardless of the facts regardless of the demonstrated facts in the article from the research study. - The first thing this person had to say was you shouldn't or you can't. There you go, and it made me think our first of all it is that kind of nonsense infuriates me because we aren't talking about how to get red wine stains out of a dress shirt. We're not talking about the best barbecue recipe. We're not talking about something simple. We're bad advice. Won't hurt anybody. If somebody gives you bad advice on barbecue sauce, maybe you know, your meal won't taste that great or whatever, but no one's going to die. You know, if somebody gives you bad advice on how to get red wine stains out of a dress shirt or out of your carpeting or whatever and it turns out not to work. - Well nobody died. Right? No one's going to get hurt. There's not going to be any lasting physical effect. But when it comes to things like this in this nature use of tourniquets and traumatic Medical Care and so forth bad advice can cause people to die to lose their lives and that it really infuriates me when people the "You Can't" crowd sticks up their lazy ugly heads and gives bad advice that net bad advice. - As I said, the bad advice is not like, you know, red wine stains or cooking recipes or whatever bad advice in this area can cause people to die. How often do you allow the “You Can’t” crowd to affect your decision-making? How many times have you wanted or thought about doing something new doing something adventurous doing something different doing something branching out or what have you and the "You Can't" crowd and the "You Can't" crowd could be one person or it could be multiple people or what have you shows up. - Tell you all the reasons why you can't now there is a real difference in Practical reality. In intellectual laziness for instance. I am over 50 years old right now. I will admit that to you freely, and if I decided tomorrow morning, you know what? When I was growing up I used to drink Tang and I used to watch movies about, you know outer space exploration so forth. - So what I'm going to do is I'm going to get my car and I'm going to drive to the NASA headquarters, and I'm going to tell them that I want to be an astronaut , and I'm motivated and I'm going to do it and no one can tell me I can't is that really a practical reality like probably not probably not. - Let's say I started jogging and I feel like I'm pretty good at jogging I can you know, go a mile or two miles or several miles or whatever and you know, I can do it. So I get in my car and I drive down to Colorado and I go to the US Olympic Training Center, and I say hey, I'm going to try out for the Olympic long-distance runner team or the Olympic track team. - They're like, I'm glad that you're the best runner on your block, but you're probably not going to make the Olympic team that that is a practical reality. That's probably not going to happen. But more often than not how often when someone tells you shouldn't do that or you can't do that or don't even try that. - That's what drives me insane is the regardless of facts of evidence. What will Arab studies what we, you know, new information? So forth regardless of all of that. You should even try don't even try you can't you shouldn't and here's why you should. As I said, I'm not talking about being you know, 50 years old and trying to make the US Olympic track team. - I'm talking about people that are so intellectually lazy, and where does that we know where does the “You Can’t” crowd come from, and why is the “You Can’t” crowd even care? seriously, so the people that tell you shouldn't and you can't. How does your attempt to do something, to improve yourself, to change, to venture out, how does it actually affect them? - Seriously, how does it affect them? Why do they tell you that you can't you know, like well whether I try and succeed or whether I try and fail it doesn't affect you really at all. So where is this opinion coming from? I'll tell you a little bit of it is psychological it goes back to the C student, right the person who is who does just enough to get by so that they can get a see, you know, she's obviously not failing you're not failing but it's not the best grade. - It's not a good grade. It's not really something that you would brag about right, but it's just enough. Often the C students of our world, they don't like it when the B and A students show up because it exposes them as lazy. It exposes them as those who do just enough to get by a lot of these you can't you shouldn't people they're not even C students. - Most of them are D students. They're passing, they got a D, D's passing, right? You don't have to you don't have to repeat that grade if you Daddy, I mean it's not great, but you don't have to feed it. So here are these ambitious A and B students show up in there. Like I want to do this. - It's really kind of sick and twisted if you think about it. But yet how often do you allow yourself to be influenced? By the "You Can't" crowd. how often have you allowed yourself to be influenced by the you can't crowd because you read something you read a comment on an article or you saw a YouTube video or whatever and you are all excited to go take a training class or to do something new or something different or venture out and then, someone, you saw the "You Can't" video or the "You Can't" article or the "You Can't" comment and then you decided not to. - There is a real difference between practical reality and intellectual laziness and by far when you encounter the "You Can't" or "You Shouldn't" crowd, it's not because it's a practical reality or it's impractical most of the time it's because the "You Can't" people are intellectually lazy, and I'm not going to have any of it and you shouldn't either. Alright, ladies and gentlemen, I'm your host Paul Markel, and I will talk to you again real soon. [OUTRO] ♫ Trenches by Pop Evil ♫ *Alex* Thank you for spending time with us today. Functional Soft Tissue is a concept to help evaluate, treat, and stabilize soft tissue injuries through several different pathways: provocation, motion, resistance, functional positions or activities and proprioception. All of these pathways are neurological bombardments of the central nervous system which lead to the ultimate Control-Alt-Delete and reset of all of those tissues to allow for proper neurological function. - Dr. Greg Doerr JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST 20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE Even with continuous use and the latest developments, taping still continues to get a bad rap about not being an effective form of healing the body's muscle tissues. Tactile taping application and how it can help improve the postural structure and position. The main benefits of taping for the human body: postural correction, instabilities, and neuro resetting. Why good posture is vital for every single body part and good health. How long kinesiology tape lasts for and what to do if you plan on going for a trip. What to do if you notice any skin irritation from taping. How long it takes to teach someone proper movement and posture plus how to decide if taping is right for them. The starting steps to go down the road of healing your body. Power Quotes From The Show   "A lot of people are taping, but actually don't even know what they're doing. First of all, you need to know whether or not taping is right for the situation by following different algorithms. The initial step is deciding whether or not you have an area that's dysfunctional." - Dr. Greg Doerr "I'm the hugest placebo on the planet. I'm upbeat, happy, and smiley. I have this constant high energy that would actually put a patient in a positive, emotional state. When someone can transpire that type of excitement, happiness, and energy to a patient, that patient will want to get better." - Dr. Greg Doerr "Since taping is a neurological stimulation, there's no such thing as sham taping. Whether you put the tape from top to bottom, across, or on a diagonal, you're still going to touch the same exact skin receptors. So, the significant change between somebody who's sham taped for somebody who's taped, it's not going to be large enough to make taping look like a relevant form of treatment. That's why we need better research on taping." - Dr. Greg Doerr "All of our injuries start with poor mechanical posture. When we talk about proper posture, everyone immediately thinks about the spine. However, every single body part needs good posture: the shoulder, the hip, the knee, foot, and ankle. All of these have their own neutral posture position and we can assist them with taping techniques." - Dr. Greg Doerr "We cannot eliminate stress from our lives, but we can have proper outlets for it. Television is not a proper outlet, but exercise and music are proper outlets. Ask yourself if you're finding ways to actually relieve your stress so that you can create some kind of balance within your own brain. That is our greatest challenge; trying to find some type of homeostasis within our mental well-being." - Dr. Greg Doerr Links From Today's Show: About FAKTR of Functional Soft Tissue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4s-Vez8QOjk Dr. Greg Doerr Twitter LinkedIn Functional Soft Tissue  Facebook Twitter YouTube Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center Facebook FAKTR - Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab FTMI - Scoliosis What Is The Graston Technique? Today’s episode features guest Cody Plofker, Co-Founder of Adapt Performance and Rehab in Lawrence Township, New Jersey.   Cody has worked with athletes of all levels and ranges, including those in the NFL and collegiate ranks.   He is an expert in blending PRI principles with modern athletic performance methods.  For those of you who enjoyed the lifting concepts talk with Justin Moore, this will be another incredible episode along the same lines of thought. About a year ago, I first got introduced to the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) through a seminar put on at the US Olympic Training Center.  Since then, I’ve realized that the biggest piece missing in my coaching paradigm for my collegiate population is an intimate understanding of the spinal engine, posture, respiration, and how to optimally assess and correct athletes based on these concepts. So often as strength coaches, we get in to reductionist thinking of just rolling and stretching tight muscles, to achieve better movement patterns, but the fact of the matter is that the body is a more complex system, and the brain will increase the tone of particular muscles for a reason.  This is where Cody’s experience is such an incredible help for athletes, as well as educating coaches. Cody Plofker has been a student of not only PRI for many years, but also has experience using common assessment systems of the FMS and SFMA, as well as Functional Range Conditioning.  Since these are very common tools in the sports performance and personal training world, I’m excited to chat with someone as intelligent as Cody in regards to which aspects of which systems he finds useful, and how his athlete assessment currently plays out. On today’s podcast, we will talk about Cody’s assessment methods, blending aspects of PRI and SFMA, as well as dealing with common athlete issues such as “tight” ankles, internal rotation deficits, and extension pattern problems.  We’ll also get into optimizing hip extension and talk a great deal about squatting progressions and patterns.  One of the amazing quotes of Cody’s that I think sums things up well is: “You gotta go after the pelvic position first; I’m not going to stretch something until we get that” Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Cody’s background as an athlete and coach Schools of thought and institutions that have impacted Cody in his athlete assessment and training process Cody’s athlete assessment process using SFMA and PRI principles Assessments for tight ankles and calves, and how stretching is usually not the answer Optimal hip extension patterning, assessment and corrective ideas Addressing a lack of hip internal rotation in athletes Healthy hip extension patterns and key points when assessing athletes in this regard Squat progressions for athletic populations When getting athletes stronger is important, and when it is not needed for improved performance Quotes “For someone starting out, FMS is a great place to start” “The biggest gold that comes from the FMS and SFMA logic is “is it a mobility issue or is it a stability and motor control issue”” “With the population I see, 90-95% of the time, it is not a true mobility issue, and just stretching and cranking away is really not what you are trying to do” “Most people that come to me, on one or more sides have so little hip internal rotation that it is going to affect their squat” “Those calves aren’t actually truly short, there is just neurological tension in them because you are trying to hold yourself up against gravity and not fall forward” “I do think that there is a time and a place for stretching, banded work, or even some foam rolling, but I don’t think we should be blindly doing it” “I do think you could make something worse by stretching something you shouldn’...
