Too often, the impulse is to give up and then, if we're honest, pretend that God hasn't revealed His will to us.Good old Abe Lincoln had it right when he said that the only important response is to make sure we are on God's side, not whether He's on ours.God has already told us that He's on our side. He sent His Son, Jesus, to take the penalty for our sin. It doesn't get any more “on our side” than that.Change your thinking a bit. Don't focus on what you think God is supposed to do.Resolve instead to follow God, and do it every day.Let's pray.Lord, your will is the thing that drives us on to find our purpose in life. He was the son of humble, pious parents in Phrygia, and as supported himself keeping geese. At a very early age he was granted the gift of healing illnesses of man and animals, and driving out unclean spirits. The daughter of the Emperor Gordian (238-244) was possessed by a demon, which no physician or pagan sorcerer had been able to drive away. One day the demon shouted, 'Only Tryphon is able to drive me out!' Gordian sent servants to scour the Empire in search of the unknown healer; eventually their inquiries led them to the teenaged goose-keeper, and they brought him to Rome, where his prayers immediately drove out the demon. The Emperor showered Tryphon with gifts, which he gave away to the poor on his journey homeward. When the persecution of Christians under Decius (250) broke out, Tryphon was denounced to the regional government as a dangerous promoter of Christianity (though he had continued to live as a humble peasant, his miracles and healings had made him known). His former service to the Emperor was either forgotten or of no account to the governor, who had him viciously tortured, then sent to Nicaea for further interrogation. There, when no torment would persuade him to deny Christ or worship the idols, he was beheaded outside the city gates. His relics were returned to Lampsacus, near his home, where he continued to work many miracles of healing. Saint Tryphon is especially invoked for the protection of gardens and farmland against locusts, reptiles, and all small pests.
Romans 10:14-17 — In this sermon on salvation from Romans 10:14–17 titled “Preaching and Salvation,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones dives into some of the fundamental questions of Christianity: How does one receive salvation? What is the eternal position of those who have not heard? How should the gospel be preached? These questions are important to faith and occur frequently in the mind of the believer. They may be a prevailing source of uncertainty or perhaps doubt. But Dr. Lloyd-Jones quenches these points of uncertainty by focusing on this passage and the interpretation of Paul's discourse. He goes back to the basics, proclaiming that salvation comes to those who cry out to the Lord. Discussion Questions: Sermon Overview Receive the Christ and receive the resurrection.Digging Deeper Read Luke 20:27-441. There are aspects of life in this broken world that can cause us to long for “the resurrection.” What would be some of those things for you? 2. In this passage, Jesus is confronted by some “who deny that there is a resurrection.” (v. 27) There are some who do the same thing today. How important is belief in the resurrection from the dead for true, biblical Christianity? Support your answer. (Please read 1 Cor. 15:12-20, to see the apostle Paul's answer to this question.)3. This passage teaches us that human marriage will not be a part of the age to come in the new heavens and the new earth. How does that land on you? 4. Human marriage points beyond itself to the marriage of Christ and his bride, the church. Why is the marriage we will enjoy for all eternity something worth looking forward to? In what ways will it be better than even the best of human marriages? 5. It is good to live with all our might while we do live, and it is good to eagerly long for the day when we enter our eternal home. What might it look like to live well now, and yet long with eager anticipation for the resurrection? 6. There are many today who (as did the Sadducees) think Jesus is little more than a “good teacher” (v. 28). Why is it not a viable option for us (or anyone else) to see Jesus as simply a good teacher (and nothing more)? How might we respond to those who see Jesus this way? 7. What is Jesus' line of reasoning in support of the resurrection from “the passage about the bush” (v. 37)? 8. What is the significance for us that Jesus (“the Christ,” v. 41) is both David's son and David's Lord? 9. How might the truths from this passage help you grow in your love for Christ and in your pursuit of a life that is pleasing to him? Prayer
